This is the first book I've seen that recognizes that there is more to creating a web site than knowing a specific web development program.

It explains in easy to understand terms, all of the steps necessary to do your web site...from start to finish.

This is the perfect book for an individual or a small business that wants to create their own web site.

I am an absolute beginner in the world of website design. After researching numerous books and videos on the subject I came across David Karlins absolutely brilliant book. It is written in such a manner that even a ten year old would understand. Someone who truly understands the subject and posses real knowledge is capable of presenting the same in a simple way. I highly recommend this book to all people who have gaps and holes in understanding of the process of creating web site.

Very helpful basic book for a web site builder/beginner to understand about web sites. Too often books/teachers seem to think that the problem is not understanding the how the design program works when the problem is more basic, more conceptual. I look forward now to reading his book on Dreamweaver MX.

Fraser hits the high points: be nice to everyone; be positive; see the good in people and say it. His section on holding your tongue when provoked is excellent. He quotes Sartre to great effect: "Words are loaded pistols." And he has an interesting take on your network: if you are the smartest person in it, you are building it the wrong way. Good point.

Read this book if you want to satisfy your number one client - yourself. I have continued to re-read sections of this book to keep my focus on behaviors that will net my clients and myself the most amazing results.

If you just "read" the book, you'll miss the power. You must also DO the exercises as they come up, and allow yourself to become the type of person that Doug describes. So if you're brave enough to truly "change" you'll no doubt get the results Doug describes.

I've done the work, and begun to see the results, and can tell you it's well worth the effort. I bought a case of these books and mailed them to 20 of my friends. Several have called me to say thanks... genuinely.

My genuine thanks for Doug for sharing his wisdom with us in this concise, easy to read and fun format. It's like you're there with him in a workshop, which I've had the privilege of doing also.

This book is unlike all other "selling" books I've read. It is the best book I've read, and has given me tremendous insight.

This book is not about sales training. Forget everything you have been taught about sales, closing funnels, and how to acquire clients. The message and the exercises in "Clients Forever" will transform you, your business and how you attract the type of clients that you want to work with. Permanent change is the natural outcome of the exercises and insights into who you are and how you show up in the world, when they are applied to yourself and to the relationships with your clients. Most importantly, your clients will have the opportunity to work with someone who is truly client centered and principled.

I was very impressed by the section on intuition, in chapter 11. Coming from a background in mathematics, I am too familiar with how logic and reasoning can destroy flashes and moments of insight. Doug Carter gives tremendous credibility to intuitive awareness. He teaches us that our own intuition is the most powerful tool that we own for evaluating how our clients feel in their relationships with us. This is very powerful stuff. I sincerely hope that someday he will dedicate an entire book to this topic and relate it to how we are "being" with our clients, ourselves, and everyone we know.

Like what the authour mentioned, I have personally gone through all 6 out of the 7 'generations' of selling techniques. I am currently selling using needs based (5th g) and questions based (6th g) techniques and have always felt there are something important missing. I didn't know why until I started to search for the answer and found it with Hyrum W. Smiths books (what matters most and the 10 natural laws of successful time and life management).

Then I stumbled onto 'clients forever' and discovered in a revelation that it is exactly the missing link. I tried it on some leads and it works! This book would be able to make my life easier and my income higher.

However, I would suggest that those who want to use the technique combine it with Hyrum's Franklin Planning system because they matched exactly.

Well worth the time invested to learn the knowledge!

The birth of the modern--for the human in all of us
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-24
Michel de Montaigne was and is a very special benchmark in the history of Western civilization. He was not the first diarist or journalist with whom brooding souls throughout history have kept company--Marcus Aurelius, Seneca the Younger, St. Augustine, and others preceded him in that regard--but he was, perhaps, one of the first to do so with such scathing honesty, such hands-in-the-air bewilderment, humbling admissions of ignorance, and a deep, abiding compassion for humanity. He lived amid the birth pangs of a Europe on the cusp of modernity, and felt its political, philosophical, religious, cultural, and emotional tensions with every fiber of his being. One senses he knew that the only way to deal with the impending seismic shift was to ask anew the timeless questions of "who am I?" and "what do I know?" without any of the traditional sets of training wheels or safety nets. Not the Church, not the state, not tradition, not custom, not even common sense--everything deserved to be examined afresh. He manages to do so in a way that is far from the arid formalism of Descartes or the tendentious and smug skepticism of Hume; reading his essays is like a set of spiritual exercises. His erudition is profound, his observations keenly insightful, and his boundless curiousity wonderful to get lost in. The "Apology for Raymond Sebonde" is worth the price of the book alone. Everyone from Shakespeare to Ralph Waldo Emerson has had the man from Bordeaux on his or her nightstand, and for a timeless treat, you should as well.

"A Great Anthology of Montaigne's Essays"

Montaigne's writings are eloquent, rich in allusions and anecdotes, and above all they sparkle with philosophical insights. Immortal names like Cicero, Homer, Virgil, and Horace are cited on every page, and reveal that the classical world of the past and the humanistic world of the present were very real to him. These essays also display Montaigne's mistrust of systematic philosophy, and show his support of faith and divine revelation over human reason. Montaigne's writings played a considerable role in setting the stage for later philosophers, like Descartes, to establish a new system of knowledge independent of the sense perception. This edition is a faithful translation from the original, and preserves beyond others the pristine clarity of Montaigne's ideas.

"My library is in the third story of a tower; on the first is my chapel, on the second a bedroom with ante-chambers, where I often lie to be alone; and above it there is a great wardrobe. Adjoining my library is a very neat little room, in which a fire can be laid in winter, and which is pleasantly lighted by a window..." Michel de Montaigne (1533 - 1592) wrote in the chapter "On Three Kinds of Relationships".

Montaigne liked being retired, seeking distance to a world of bloody fights between religious groups. Did these things develop, 400 years later? Montaigne tried to escape dogmatic thoughts finding a new way of hammering out thoughts via his typical relaxed method of writing. Living 200 years earlier than the other genius of essay, the poor Soeren Kierkegaard, Montaigne was not as filled up with anxiety as the Danish philosopher - he instead managed to stay calm with a solid resource of optimism, though things outside his favorite tower often run very worse.

His courageous goal was the overcoming of the stereotyped medieval conception of the world, in which humans usually had been overwhelmed by church- or government-authorities like puppets on a string. Montaigne established the departure to individual noticing, founded an anthropocentric view of world. This probably had something fresh to his contemporary readers.

Montaignes program was to dip down in ones own mind: "Everyone, who is listening to his inner landscape of thoughts, is able to discover his identity, so that he is able to repel everything, which does not fit this." About his style of writing essayist Elias Canetti noticed: "Montaigne is most beautiful, because he does not hurry."

Aged 17 Michel de Montaigne had ridden to Paris, to complete his humanistic education. There he had attached important relations, had operated with prostitutes notoriously and had squandered the family wealth, until the father pulled the emergency brake and called him back to Bordeaux, where he had to begin a boring job at the local court (if we can trust the speculations of the French biographer Lacouture).

Historically more secured is Montaigne's political identity: the France of his time had torn up, the faith splitting escalated in the "St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre" in Paris on 24 August 1572, bloody amuck in many other French cities followed, also in Montaigne's Bordeaux. He had been the mayor, and particularly in the second term of office 1583-85, he skillfully succeeded to calm down the parties (Catholics tried to slaughter the Protestant Huguenots).

His "ideology-free" position had been developed in expanded studies of the classical philosophers - and in a thereupon diametrically opposite literary attempt to justify an own individual kind of thinking and writing: precisely analyzing human conditions (using oneself as the only field, one can explore without too much strange mistakes) without being paralyzed by social regulations of how to search and communicate.

"I do not proclaim doctrines of faith, but not obligatory opinions, which one can classify as a gesture alike done by children, trying to show their experiments: they only want to learn, not to instruct or indoctrinate."

The skeptical, further-asking, essentially open dialogue of Montaigne influenced such thinkers as Diderot, Lichtenberg or Nietzsche. His writing method encouraged philosophy, psychology - and hundreds of essayists. Indeed we hope, that Montaigne's voice will never get lost ...

Some authorities consider Montaigne the first essayist. His writing style is clear and his thought has common sense. Yet he is still encumbered by the classics. The ancients weigh on him like a stone. The celbrated erudition he displays in nearly every essay by quoting classical authors and envoking their names frequently is impressive but also distracting. I know that in expressing this opinion I differ from the majority of Montaigne's readers. But I believe that he had to much reverence for the classics.

Much More than a Speaking Book

Great book. The one chapter alone on gender differences, and feminine/masculine speaking styles (men to men, men to women, women to women, women to men) makes the book worth hundreds of times the price, especially to anyone in consulting or sales. If you have ever been left shaking your head and wondering what's going on when speaking to people; after reading that chapter, the "light will go on".

This is much more than merely a speaking book. It is a book on communications survival in a highly competitive world - essential for anyone who makes their living by talking to people, and most of us do.

The Secret to Overcoming Speaking Anxiety: A Proactive Way
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-13
I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. Although I have read several books on public speaking...and I've done the "Toastmaster's training thing," I'm grateful to have found Harrison Monarth and Larina Kase book with simple and easy-to-understand strategies for what can be a difficult subject -- becoming a confident speaker when it isn't natural to you.

I believe they take a very proactive approach to helping us understand how positive thoughts and beliefs, combined with speaking strategies, give us control over ourselves and our audiences.

They also take a customer centered approach, which they say is very important, because if you don't focus on what your audience wants, you'll never feel confident that you are meeting their needs.

Even if you aren't a professional speaker, you will get something good from this book, especially if you want to confidently get your point across. It might be in a school meeting discussing your children, or supporting an important issue in a community meeting.

Since most people read non-fiction books for the benefit they bring, I've identified a few specific points that you too might find helpful in The Confident Speaker.

** Dispelling the common myths about public speaking anxiety

** What preparations reduce anxiety quickly and easily

** The Do's and Don'ts of great public speaking

** How to connect with your audience and know what they want

** Simple but effective techniques to increase your confidence

I interviewed Harrison and Larina on Inside Success Radio for three reasons: 1) I believe that speaking with an author is the best way to know a book is genuine, 2) it gives the author an opportunity to summarize the main points, which creates a type of "Readers Digest" version of the book, and 3) during an interview you often get additional "golden nuggets" that aren't found in the book.

During the radio interview I asked them to share with everyone what the Inside Success Secret is to being a confident speaker in front of any crowd, and this is what she shared:

"There are many myths out there that need to be dispelled. One is, if you're anxious you will not perform well. In reality we actually need anxiety to perform well; we just need the right level of anxiety. People start getting a little nervous, they feel their heart beating quickly and they think oh no, I'm anxious, I'm not going to do a good job when we found in research that in fact when people are a bit anxious they do a fine job."

After reading their book and interviewing them, I believe Harrison Monarth and Larina Kase are two of the top experts on speaking. By following what they teach you will go from scared speechless to confident speaker. Their proactive strategies are easy to understand, and if you apply them, they will bring quick results....YOU WILL BE A CONFIDENT SPEAKER!"

This book is probably not for the person who is looking for highly advanced techniques for honing a sales presentation. If that is you then I recommend you look for books specific to your particular need.

The rating I use is based on a combination of how much I believe a proactive person might enjoy reading them and how much they might help you to be a more proactive person.

This book easily earns 5 stars...and I recommend it to you with no reservation. This book is not only a welcome addition to my own library; it will be a great gift for friends and family.

This book serves as an excellent introduction to and/or refresher on valuation techniques. The entire valuation process (primarily DCF) is broken down into a series of steps, each of which gets its own complete chapter. Each chapter is well written and builds on its predecessors.

A particular strength of the book is the authors' reference to Excel functions and which ones are useful in valuation models. This book is not just theory; there are concrete "how to" examples throughout. Once you've finished this book, you can do more than cite valuation theory: you can build valuation models.

One of the best finance books I've ever read.

Simon Benninga's and Oded Sarig's "Corporate Finance: A Valuation Approach" (CFaVA) is one of those secret texts that true insiders cherish while other less efficient or significant works capture limelight.

"CFaVA" is comparable to the McKinsey group authors Koller, Goedhart, Wessels's "Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies" and also Aswath Damodaran's "Investment Valuation: Tools and Techniques for Determining the Value of Any Asset" [Full disclosure: I've taught graduate Corporate Valuation with both texts].

Benninga and Sarig's work is excellent because it is lean while not oversimplified. The key chapter of estimating discount rates is the finest one-chapter treatment of the subject I've seen in my career, and should be required reading for any M&A or LBO banker or PE associate. The chapter on valuing by multiples is also useful for relative value and comparative scenarios for deal-makers.

Chapter 12 covers convertible securities, and it would be unfair to say it is bad simply because it is compressed and incomplete (entire libraries have been written on the subject of convertible bond valuation), but also appears out of place in the content of the book until you realize that the random elements of a stock price going forward in time intersect with capital structure choices and enterprise value, so the connection and recursive element of valuation is made at once explicit with an example.

An excellent book that should be well known by a wider audience.

This book does a good job of logically explaining the step-by-step method of corporate valuation. Benninga and Sarig do a good job of focusing on the practical tools of finance. I only wish the DCF examples were less simplistic. A substantial amount of additional work is needed to apply these models to real world firms.

This book offers a very simple introduction to evaluation of companies prior to investing. The DCF method is primarily used. There is a common thread running through the chapters which makes the book easy to understand. Its not verbose, which adds to its attractiveness. But, the readers should remember that this is only an introduction, and some other advanced book like Copeland's is needed to build upon the ideas presented in the book.

Dr. Hubbell Webster is a brilliant psychiatrist. Perhaps it is his genius that leads him to be act so very bizarrely. His wife Catherine says that his "methods to be those of a man whose existence is dependent solely upon the evolving absurdity of the very situations he incites". I think this is probably the aptest description of the man.

Dancing in the Void is full of great characters that give the reader insight into a whole different world. Some of these individuals have a deep sadness about them that manifests into very dark, scary personalities. Some of the characters are deeply frightening. Others simply make you shake your head, not only because of their absolute absurdity but also the fact that they remind you of someone you've actually met before.

Dr. Hubbell Webster is probably my favorite character. He is clever with a wry sense of humor that he always takes to the extreme so that the rest of us see the irony of the situation. I found him and his inappropriate behavior completely entertaining and yet somewhat disturbing all at the same time. I love the ending- extremely fitting.

I received this book as a gift and I cannot say how glad that I am that I did. I truly enjoy Robert Edward Levin's writing style and cannot wait to read more of his work. I cannot say how many times I found myself reading this and actually laughing out loud.. only moments later to be taken to feeling other emotions as the story continued. You really do feel like you're in the story as you turn each and every page. I would recommend this book to everyone and I plan to do just that.

Each time I pick up a book I have hopes of the author being able to suck me in and that I'll have feelings, both negative and positive for the characters. If the book is what I hope then I will lose track of time and think about the characters long after I put it down. Robert Edward Levin has been able to do just that with Dancing in the Void. He sucked me in and blew me away. When I finished the book I sat looking at it and said (aloud!) "OHMYGAWD!"

Vivid, heart wrenching!

Title: Dancing in the Void

AUTHOR: Robert Edward Levin

Madness or genius? Sanity or Insanity?
A very fine line separates the two. When does the doctor become the patient?

Dancing in the Void reads like a collection of short stories merging together in a fascinating, entertaining plot leading to a haunting conclusion.

Character profiles are the stars of this novel. The author brings the eccentric Dr. Hubbell Webster, the pragmatic Sardi Thompson, the addicted Elijah Crow and the alcoholic, obsessive policeman Detective Ryder, to life. Their pasts have made them who they are but how will their lives intertwine in a bizarre set of circumstances? Readers become enthralled. Apposite realism, action and reaction explode on the pages.

Author Robert Levin lives in Michigan with his wife. His first book, a collection of short stories, The Lizard and the Fly was published in 1998. His short stories, essays and poetic works have been published nationwide and abroad. The style of Dancing in the Void reflects his short story background. He is a music lover.

Mr. Levin has a unique understanding of the human psyche and his erudite writing style reflects his literary prowess. A great read with vivid, heart wrenching descriptions and a conclusion that will stay with you long after the last page is read.

I am so impressed with this authors method of relating his characters to his readers. I fell right in the web and was caught there until I finished the book. There is never a dull moment with this story. I think that Hubbell Webster is an intriguing character that I could see brought to life on the big screen.

How wonderful and unusual to find a book about musical theatre that is never pretentious, never dull, brilliantly opinionated, and that has a healthy sense of humor about its subject. There is more joy and humor in this book than in any other similar book I've ever read. Miller's intelligence and enthusiasm overflows and you'll find yourself smiling, laughing out loud, and humming along as you read this happily readable, entertaining, irreverent book.

This book understands that the dark side of humanity is always more complex and more interesting and so it focuses mostly on shows that tackle the dark side -- Camelot, Chicago, Falsettos, King and I -- but interestingly, all shows that use a lot of humor to make their very serious points.

This is not a book for those grumpy old curmudgeons who are always grumbling that musicals ought to be silly, sappy, escapist comedies. This is a book for people who love Grown-Up Musicals, the kind that feed both brain and soul. If that's you, you have to buy this book. You'll love it.

a must-read for ANY theatre enthusiast

Every analysis that Miller wrote in this book just blew me away. It completely opened my eyes to all the subtext behind musicals that prior to this just seemed...well, dull. However, I suddenly acquired new views on musicals like "The Music Man" and "Camelot" and I now appreciate them not only as classics but engaging pieces of theatre. His ideas on all the other musicals, especially the Sondheim pieces are simply enlightening. What are you waiting for? Buy it!

I am a Lecturer in Acting and Music Theatre at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Bachelor of Music Theatre program) and DECONSTRUCTING HAROLD HILL is on my book list for the students. Why?

Because underneath your writing is an undeniable energy, love, support for our craft; this fragile crystal of a business called 'show'. I am not really concerned whether or not I agree with your opinions, apothesis, arguments, discussions etc...what I want is my students to be infected by PASSION and your book is an undeniable example of that. Like you and me, I WANT them to have opinions, to engage in lively and researched debate, to listen to/see the works of the repertoire, to know which song/scene comes from what and that takes energetic, rigourous and PASSIONATE research. If your book goes a wee way to get them off their arses and into action...so be it.

I thank you for a book that has not only enthused my students but that goes one step further towards securing the fragile architecture of our business...

I loved this author's first book, From Assassins to West Side Story, but I wasn't prepared for the further depth and greater brilliance of his second book, Deconstructing Harold Hill. This is a man who knows his theatre, who understands human nature, and who cares enough about great art to treat it seriously and respectfully without being afraid to criticize it or demand fresh approaches. This is a work of great intellect that is still accessible to readers with no theatre or music background (a rarity), and yet, I would guess, in depth and surprising enough to aid the most experienced professional.

In his introduction, Mr. Miller complains that American directors don't come at older American musicals with fresh enough perspectives, and the rest of the book does what those directors can't -- it looks, as if for the first time, at a collection of wonderful, important musicals, looking at them fresh, taking the time to think about and question the things nobody else will.

His discussin of the use of musical themes in The Music Man is incredble -- there's so much there I hadn't noticed before -- and his writing makes it all accessible for someone with no music background. His discussions of the character of Harold Hill -- basically a villain who acts like a hero -- is fascinating. He sees glorious little details in this show I've never seen before.

His chapter on Camelot opened my eyes like never before to the depth and possibilities of this show that usually falls into the shadow of My Fair Lady. Mr. Miller sees complexity and nuance in these characters that I've never seen explored before. How amazing it would be to see a production of Camelot that used Mr. Miller's ideas. The show would be transformed instantly from a pretty musical into a soaring, searing piece of tragic theatre.

His chapter on Chicago makes a compelling case for why the revival doesn't do the show justice. And his chapters on Sondheim musicals (Passion and Sunday in the Park) confirm for me that Mr. Miller is the preeminent American interpreter of Sondheim's works. Though I live in Seattle, I may just venture down to St. Louis to see Mr. Miller's ideas at work on his own stage. How lucky the people of St. Louis must be to have an artist this intelligent, this passionate, and this emotional working in their city.

Mr Kiameh has done it again. He has captured his vast practical knowledge into this simple yet comprehensive handbook. The difference between this book and a typical text used in the academic world is that one can find solutions and descriptions to their plant problems; the academic texts are heavily biased to the theorectical while Mr. Kiameh's approach hinges strongly in the industrial aspects.
