Liz Cornish looks at the real challenges facing women in leadership positions and provides them specifics for step by step success. Every woman going into (or already in) a leadership position should read this book.

I've never read a "lesbian thriller" before, but man did I love this one! Oh Sam and Tori :O) what great characters. I loved the different twists and unexpected events. This book definitely had me at the edge of my seat.

Excellent Read

Review Date: 2008-01-27
As a somewhat "newbie" to reading lesbian novels, I have come across very few that have enthralled and captivated me like Hunters Way. Not only is it believable that a tough, unsociable, distant woman (Tori) could find herself drawn to her warm, thoughtful and full of life partner (Sam), it was completely entertaining to see it unfold....slowly. Not a minute of this read was boring. From page one, it caught my attention and drew me in, giving me the feeling that I knew each of the characters personally.

Gerri Hill can simply tell a story and while this book was full of hot, believable passion, it was also full of drama as the story unfolds. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It will be one of many that I read from this author and she has now set a very high standard of what I expect from a fiction novel.

Loved it!

I love to read but I'm the kind of person that takes weeks, sometimes months to read a book. However, with this book I've stayed up two nights in a row well past midnight (and I get up at 5 am) just to finish it.
I was a little hesitant to buy this book because I thought "oh great, another Lesbian cop story" but to my surprise the storyline kept me interested and kept me reading.

Nice mystery, good romance

This romance moves quickly with nice suspense. Tori is especially likable, despite being a tough cop. You find yourself rooting for her to get the girl (who happens to be straight until, of course, being partnered with Tori on the force and charmed by Tori's protectiveness.) The mystery provides the perfect backdrop for the two characters to grow close and ultimately get together. Definitely, a must have addition to any romance collection.

Excellent Characters / Flawless Character Development!

Though I am not an avid fan of this author's work, I have spent many a late night reading her fiction these past three weeks. For whatever reason, I keep coming back for more.

Though the murder mystery elements in "Hunter's Way" were not as powerful for me as they were in "The Killing Room," the unfolding mystery of the relationship between Tori and Sam was superb.

I think this is one of the best, if not the best, character/relationship developments I have ever read. Nothing in the writing forced the relationship to grow unnaturally. Most enjoyable read.

Absolutely the most amazing lecture series I have ever heard. I have never heard Hill speak but you can just tell he is absolutely committed to his philosophy by being such a shining example of it! He was paid a pittance when he was interviewing the hundreds of successful people that Andrew Carnegie introduced for Hill. It took him around 20 years to get all that data into a systematic philosophy for personal success! Who else would be more qualified to speak on personal success than Hill?!?

This lecture series contains material that is not in Think and Grow Rich and the Keys to Success books. This should be the bible of success for everyone!

I have the print version of Think and Grow Rich as well as this set of CD's and they nicely complement one another. While much of what is in the CD can be gleaned from the book, it is good to listen to Mr. Hill's lectures to reinforce the material.

That said, I must say I made the mistake of listening to the CD's in the car while commuting to and from work. The angst of driving in Southern California doesn't allow for proper attention to be paid to the material in the recordings. My suggestion is that you find a quiet, isolated place to listen to the CD's and then really focus on what Mr. Hill is saying. He is full of knowledge and is also an entertaining speaker. You will not get bored listening to him! It will be so much more valuable than zoning out watching mindless, worthless television shows.

Much of what he says is really nothing more than common sense but it is helpful to have it all contained in one setting, plus how many of us know what we ought to do but don't do it? I believe if a person truly applies the principles and techniques advocated by Mr. Hill, there is no doubt they will be successful.

The Amazon price for the 9-CD set is well worth it. Just make sure you set yourself up in the proper listening environment, then act on what he says.

My favorite book on index funds

I have been doing a self-study on investing topics this year and previously read several books on indexing by Jack Bogle [my hero, and an erudite writer], and Morningstar's Christine Benz [Clear and concise], but I think this is my favorite. Ferri is laser sharp in explaining investing concepts, and reads like you are learning one-on-one from an excellent business school professor. I bought this book because I had already read his also excellent book on asset allocation. This would be a perfect book if it was better edited. The text and content is fine but there are typos, repeated words, etc. Ferri's work deserves better, but I still very highly recommend the book.

I have taken advantage of the latest market volatility to confirm my long-term financial strategy. I ordered several books from Amazon on asset allocation and using low-cost index funds or ETFs for investment.

Rick Ferri's books (I also ordered his new ETF book) are well-researched, complete guides to sensible, long-term investing. He avoids the fads, and provides information in clear, understandable terms without all of the emotional "hype" present in many books about the capital markets.

In my opinion, Mr. Ferri's prior books (and the articles he has published in journals for financial professionals) have made me a better investor.

I highly recommend All About Index Funds.

Review Date: 2008-03-27
This book does a good job of explaning the concept and history of index funds as well as the emerging presence of EFT's

I liked John Bogle's 1994 book on mutual funds better, but his book touched on facets Mr. Bogle's book did not. Of course that book was copyright 1994 IIRC.

I learned about indexing and the various indicies they emulate as well as the advantages and pitfalls of EFT's

A worth while read.

Members of AAII [...] have access to the 2007 EFT review which is excellent at analyzing the catagories and expenses of the various EFT's.

Review Date: 2008-02-02
I value Richard Ferri's books and this one is no exception. While the writing is easy to grasp, it is most complete. The book covers just about everything you need to know to master investing in index funds or ETFs.

Although the book is not about allocation (Ferri has a great book on that subject), it does discuss it. He shows how to actually cut risk by using a more aggressive approach.

I found the history of index funds most interesting. But I also appreciated the discussion of tax advantage in indexing, the different benchmarks, bonds and commodities.

This book can make you money if you read it, study it and apply it to your own investing. The more you know about and understand index funds and their close kin, ETFs, the better able you will be to profit by using them.

Highly recommended.

I have to agree with the other 5 star writers. Pound for pound (makes a difference in your backpack) this book is hard to beat. I find it more complete than Secrets of Anesthesia, and more user friendly than Miller. If you want to learn 100 ways to not do something, and read conflicting studies then go for Miller, otherwise "M & M" is king. Besides, I challenge anyone to bring Barash or Miller into the OR with them for a quick reference...

It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.

My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well.

The best all-around book for residents and practitioners.

I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.

Great Oral History of th AFL
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-29
I've read this book three times. There's nothing better to read sports history than an oral history of the subject by the men who played, coached, and wrote the game. The AFL was a rogue league at the beginning of the most tumultuous decade of the 20th century, the 1960's, rosters filled of castoff's, has-beens, and never-was players from the NFL. Yet, in a short span of time, the teams from the AFL were equal to and later superior to the established teams from the NFL. Think about it, the Packers dominated the 1960's, and when they got old, the teams from the AFL stepped up, the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs, to prove the AFL was coming on at the time of the merger. Read the stories and observations of players, coaches and executives from the AFL. The players and coaches had nothing to lose, the owners had everything to lose. And they made it. This is currently the only history of the league I have read, I need to read the others, but this book makes my old bubble gum cards, especially the tall ones issued by TOPPS in 1965 come alive.

This was a great, great read and the author used a very interesting way to write it by using a ton of quotes from those who were there to tell the story. His own words were the perfect conduit.

EVERYBODY GO LONG !!

Review Date: 2008-02-14
Of course, there are several books in circulation about the birth and growth of the American Football League (AFL), the greatest rival sports league in the history of American professional sports. What makes this book a little different from the pack is that it consists almost entirely of quotes from interviews with the various participants in AFL history -- players, coaches, owners, etc.

So in all candor, the author contributes little, and appears to have acted more like a stenographer than anything else. I suppose that can be both good and bad. But though I like this book a great deal, I'd say it's not as good as a similar book by Bob Curran entitled "The $400,000 Quarterback -- or -- The League that Came in from Out of the Cold."

But if you an AFL-lover, you'll love it. If you are just AFL-curious, you may want to shop around for other titles.

Not a great literary work, but interesting

Review Date: 2007-10-05
99% of this book is a collection of stories about the AFL by former players, coaches, administrators, owners, and others with some connection to the game. It is interesting, but not a great book. Most interesting is the explanation about how NBC cut off the Heidi game. Typical corporate move from the beginning to the end. Nobody had any objection throughout the week of the proposed cutoff and none of the "suits" could make a decision at crunch time. NBC has never lived the Heidi game down and it will always be remembered in sports broadcasting.

I borrowed a copy of the book from my coworker. It's probably one of the few technical books I actually enjoyed reading. Besides providing a good technical foundation to RAC, it also includes business and historical perspectives to High Availability and Redundancy. Gives you the arsenal to understand CRS, ASM, and GES (some of the most difficult aspects of Oracle Clustering), and provides you with information on proper RAC performance tuning. I bought the book from Amazon to read AGAIN because I actually enjoyed reading it the first time. I learned a lot from this book.

RAC Handbook is an excellent RAC book for new and experienced DBAs. The book is not one of the several 600 page RAC books that contain pages of not-so valuable information. The RAC Handbook is around 400 pages and it is packed with excellent detail on how to install RAC and troubleshoot common performance issues. The author of this book, K Gopalakrishnan is also the author of "Oracle Wait Interface: A Practical Guilde to Performance Diagnostics & Tuning" by Oracle Press. This book won an Oracle award and it one of the best performance tuning books. The RAC Handbook features an excellent chapter on Cache Fusion and several easy to understand examples of how blocks are transferred amongst multiple nodes. The RAC Handbook also has a decent chapter on ASM which could have been a little longer and could have gone into more detail. The chapter on RAC installation will walk you though using the cluster verify utilities which can and will alleviate many headaches that can be experienced during a RAC installation. This book is a great read for anyone that wants to build their RAC skills. Gopalakrishnan is an excellent author and I trust his research.

By far one of my favorite books on RAC internals.

I especially like the section on Cache Fusion and how locking works with Oracle 10g RAC and OPS.

My only request is that it covered more details on command line utilities but other books cover that so not that big of a deal.

It really is the guru internals guide to RAC for consultants!

I have the other book by Gopal on Oracle 10g Wait tuning and that is a great tech reference as well.

I had the fortune to work with Gopal on a RAC troubleshooting project. While a book cannot replace the real person it is a good summary of his experiences learned over many customer engagements.
The book covers all aspects of RAC from the history lesson and installation overview, to locking and even extended RAC. My favorite chapters are 10 "RAC Performance Management" and 14 "RAC Troubleshooting". They should be mandatory reading for any DBA supporting RAC. Require your developers to read chapter 16 "Developing Applications for RAC" before they start coding.

The conflicts created when a young New Yorker comes to Africa for the first time could bear fruit, but I was left shrugging by the savorless prose and the plodding pace. It read like a reworking of someone's diary, leaving out the juiciest bits. Some of the descriptions were serviceable. Here is the protagonist entering Nairobi airport: "Rachel felt dizzy as she took in the dark-skinned people in brightly colored tunics and turbans flowing past her in all directions. The low rumblings of foreign syllables filled the air, punctuated by the universal language of the high-pitched laughter and cries of children." But one feels both that there could be sharper looking, and a slight ickiness at that "universal language."

There is a saying that we stand on the shoulders of those who went before us. Thank you Larry for sharing all your wisdom and knowledge! Not only am I on the right train - I'm in just the right seat heading in the direction I always wanted to go.

As a writer, speaker and consultant I'm always looking for thought provoking ideas on promotion. This is it! Was pleasently surprised since I'd never heard of Thompson and the book looked good so I bought it. It lays out in real life terms with stories of real life people just how to go about getting ahead and noticed. Great read and great advice, Thanks Larry!

I just ordered 3 extra copies because I wish to share this book and not loose my original! This is THE IDEAL cornerstone book for persons of any age who wish to "shine".

Why?
1. It is practical, not theoretical
2. He focuses on true values, not just Hollywood values
3. He has a general plan and you fill in the blanks with your unique dreams
4. He admits weaknesses and failures happen and isn't unrealistically positive
5. Basically, He's real.
6. He covers everything succinctly with constructive steps: Values, purpose, attitude, goals, motivation, image, risk, relationships...
7. He has just the right amount of exercises, and they are practical
8. The advice is backed up by fitting Hollywood stories, making the book an easy and fun read
9. It is inspirational but backed up with substance

He says, in brief, this: You grasp your unique talent for which you can have a "rage" for, have teams to help you, and make yourself lucky by actively creating the possibilities for it to occur.

Just for balance, I don't like his word for passion, "rage", due to the negative connotations but he explains it. There are a few errors like calling high school calculus and physics "calculus and psychics".

Even if you have read self-help success books this one sort of brings everything together in one package. If you are a person who wants to "shine" you will not regret the time and money spent on this book.

Excuse me now while I go do the exercises in the book...
