An unequivocal gem of a textbook

This book is, without a doubt, the finest introduction to psychopharmacology available. From the structure and function of neurons and the brain, to drug metabolism, to the social and cultural import of various drugs and drug laws, to drug mechanisms of action and more, this succinct yet "action-packed" volume informs like a textbook and reads like the work of an outstanding author--because it is. I have taken classes with both co-authors, and they're both extraordinarily valuable people who will I never forget for as long as I live. I write this in such glowing terms because I am absolutely enthralled with psychopharmacology as an area of study, and it was Tibor Palfai who is responsible for turning me on to it and patiently and compassionately attending to every little question and concern I had, even trying to reach out to me and encourage me when I was in the depths of my own mental illness. I have since read thousands of pages on the subject, from textbooks to journal articles, and nothing has even come close to the enjoyment this book brought me. At $5 or less used, it is one of the best deals on all of Amazon.

If you've ever wondered anything at all about drugs, this book is, without a doubt, the first one you should buy! In fine style yet with compassion for the ignorant (read: US policymakers), the authors convey essential principles, information about every major class of common psychoactive drug, and dispel myth after myth about drugs--licit and illicit--while all the while maintaining an informal, highly readable tone that will keep you chained to your seat reading, wondering:

a) how on Earth a book like this ever came to be a textbook
AND
b) why all college professors aren't this passionate about teaching, which one would have to be in order to produce a book like this.

It would be on my coffee table right now had I not lent and subsequently lost BOTH copies I had.

As two former Syracuse alumni, and psychology degree holders, we must state the obvious: Tibor Palfai is not only the greatest psychology professor, but also the engineer behind pharmacological studies and uses. He displays his unending depth of both knowledge and practical use of prescription medications and their vast benefits on human interaction and proliferation. This book is for the beginner, the user, and the expert when it comes to pharmacological research, utilization and procedure. A must for your collection when it comes to understanding, using, or referring any drug to any friend, coworker, or even boss.

I had Tibor Palfai as a college professor and found both the man and the book to be fascinating. I would highly recommend you pick it up if you're close enough to buying it that you are reading this review. Great stuff!

As a degree level theatre studies student, this was an invaluable text which gave a welcome insight into the Forced Entertainment theatre phenomenen. Not only does it offer analysis of their working process, it also offers an amusing collection of experiences and feelings that make the book thoroughly readable. A gem.

I use this book throughout the graduate program with MFA and PhD students in theatre and dance. They find in it things that they have been trying to articulate for themselves and are intellectually challenged and enriched as well as given encouragement for trying to express their own ideas about their practices. Has lots of other good things about it. Great combination of theory and practice and accessibility.

Excellent insight into an original creative process.

Forced Entertainment and Tim Etchells have been for the past decade or so, chewing on the edges of performance and theatre. This book is an excellent collection of texts that open up and demystify the experimental devising process. Etchells writes his theory much in the same way has he creates performance. A must for anyone into the fuzzy gaps between the various performance disciplines

I'm a student at SLU where he teaches and Im taking his principles of economics class..Dr. Welch explains basic economics very clearly and understandably not only in class but in his book as well. I would also recommend the study guide that was written with this book, because economics is a subject that definitely requires you to practice, just like math.

this is the book for economy beginner

this book can be divided into four parts: 1. introduction to economics. 2. the macroeconomy. 3. the microeconomy. 4. the international economy.

structure of each chapter: 1. the authors tells you the chapter objectives 2. content of the book a. with bolded point b. color figure and table 3. the author intermingle each theory with an application case for you to do some thinking. 4. at the end of each chapter there is a "up for debate" which the authors gave the readers a subject to debate and they have also included pros and cons, the "up for debate" is for that chapter only. 5. at the end of each chapter the authors also gave you "Test Your Understanding" questions sort of enhance and refresh your memory of the chapter. It's a few questions, not summary. 6. then summary, key terms and concepts. 7. Review questions and Discussion Questions. 8. "Critical thinking" at the end of the chapter I think the authors wants the readers to think of some critical real-world situation especially by applying the economy theories. 9. finally we have appendix which explains more about content of the chapter, but they are not the main point of the chapter.

I am a beginner in economy and business field as well, I find this book interesting, I understand lots of economic situation in USA as well as other country, you're not going to believe me that if I tell you I don't know who is alan greenspan, I know him now, and I know what is he doing and why as well. as a conclusion, this is a good book for study in a class with teacher's guidance, it's not a good book to study alone or self-pace study, cause there were lots of cases that we (beginner) might not be able to understand it totally, and if you are not a beginner, this book worth reading because there were lots of cases that you have to do some thinking.

'Egyptian Hieroglyphs for Everyone', by Joseph and Lenore Scott, is perhaps the perfect book for the basic amateur who wants a fast introduction to this ancient language. In 76 pages, a great deal is covered in an interesting and systematic way. This small book contains basic vocabulary and grammar, interestingly arranged by theme as well as grammar principle (chapters on calendar and time-language, cartouches, the gods, etc.). They do not use the transliteration system much (save for basic pronunciation).

The authors introduce the basic steps to study, which include the following:

- learning the basic alphabet
- recognising the direction of writing
- learning special linguistic items (bilaterals, determinatives)
- pronunciation
- basic vocabulary
- beginning grammar and basic sentences

One note about pronunciation -- ancient Egyptian languages are 'dead' languages, and have been for thousands of years. Hence, no one really knows how words were pronounced. The best guesses scholars have are introduced here, but don't expect to be easily understood if you travel back in a time machine!

There are pictures of sites and artifacts in this book that show hieroglyphs in their original settings and forms.

This book is intended to whet the appetite, rather than provide a thorough education. The purpose the authors have is to motivate the reader on to more study, and for most, that will probably prove to be the case. To this end, they mention several sources, including the great 'Egyptian Grammar' by Gardiner, used in university courses in Egyptology.

This book is a wonderful introduction to the hieroglyphic writing of Ancient Egypt. It includes the alphabet, a few pictographs, in which direction to read the writing, vocabulary, sentences, numbers, etc. It also recommends some literature to further your knowledge. The best thing about this book is that it conveys the information in an easy to read manner, so that you don't have to be a scholar to understand.

Inventing Teleportation -- and good fun

If you liked _Jumper_ by Steven Gould, you will love this book! (If you liked this one, GO and get _Jumper_ RIGHT NOW!)

Both books feature teleportation and governments trying to stop the teleporter; both feature interesting characters, just trying to make the best of a, well, weird situation. Both are a great deal of fun to read.

Emperor Dad is very well-written (I only found 1 or 2 typos, which is better than many mass-market books these days!) and very entertaining.

I would classify this one as a bit more of a juvenile SF book (in the best meaning of that word -- the kids will like it as much as the adults) rather than an adult SF, as two of the major protagonists are high school aged. The cover art struck me as kinda hokey at first, but, as I read the book, I decided it perfectly fit with the story -- just the right feel of cartoon yet real.

All in all, highly recommended. Watch for more from this author -- we need a sequel to this one, at least !

Concerned about Global Warming? Well, Emperor Dad has several ideas to help the earth. This fast paced story, set in Central Texas is a good read for the whole family. James Hill is curious about the identity of the Emperor. He may soon find out he has a lot more things to do than just football practice. Get this book!

THE EMPEROR LAYS AN EGG is one of the most fact-filled books directed towards young children that I have come across. The book begins with a mother emperor penguin laying an egg and then goes on to explain how the egg is taken care of (mostly by the father), how the chick hatches, and how it grows until it becomes an adult. And the illustration appeal to children, containing a lot of blues that calm the nerves. I have just two criticims about the book. First, the book has so much information that younger readers will be overwhelmed. Much of the material will be far too confusing for a 1st grade reader. Most children won't be able to read all the material until they are in 2nd grade, but the book is marketed towards those in 1st grade and younger. Also, the illustrations, though peaceful, are kind of dull; the lack vibrance and vitality. Nevertheless, the book can be read to younger children and they will enjoy flipping through the pages looking at the pictures. THE EMPEROR LAYS AN EGG is a great non-fiction text to read to young children and a great gift for any child who likes penguins.

4 1/2* Excellent Picture Book/Fact Book

Review Date: 2002-11-05
This is a wonderful fact-filled book that will appeal to toddlers and their older siblings as well. There are surprising facts: The father's instinct to balance an egg on his feet away from the snow is so strong, that "one emperor who doesn't have an egg shuffles around with a chunk of ice about the size of a softball." It's nice that both mother and father penguins get their due as hard-working parents. The mother must travel "waddle, waddle" ninety miles to the open sea (at less than one mile an hour) to get food after the egg is hatched. If lucky, she may find a "field of slick ice, and toboggan on her white belly to speed up the four-day trip. Swoosh! Swoosh!" (The author has a lot of fun with verbs!). The father stays with the egg for over two months in temperatures as low as -60 degrees F., and loses half of his body weight.

Some passages are longer and more complex than others, although in some way this widens the book's appeal. The pictures are boldly colorful and uncluttered (made from hand painted paper shaped formed into collages), my only complaint is that some there are too many pages of static penguins. True, this is the frozen North, but in other sections of the book there is more detail and action. Replete with interesting penguin facts and bright, friendly pictures, this is an excellent combination picture book/fact book.

"In late May, as an icy winter wind blows across Antarctica, a mother emperor penguin lays an egg. Plop! To keep the egg from freezing, she catches it on her feet and covers it with a flap of skin..." So begins Brenda Guiberson's fascinating and engaging story of life and survival in the coldest place on Earth. Mother and Father penguin take turns eating, traveling on a harrowing journey ninety miles or more to an opening in the Arctic ice to feed. Their mate is left behind, standing still for months to care for the egg and eventually the fluffy little chick, in the worst of winter. Finally as the short summer begins, the baby chick leaves his parents' feet, grows black and white waterproof feathers, and learns to swim and feed on its own. Soon the winter will come, the ocean will freeze, and the emperor penguins will return to their mating grounds to begin the process again..... Ms Guiberson's easy to read and well researched text is chock full of detail, interesting facts, drama, and even appropriate sound effects, and is enhanced by Joan Paley's captivating artwork. Together word and art paint a marvelous and intriguing portrait of the life cycle of the emperor penguin. Perfect for youngsters 5 and older, The Emperor Lays An Egg is non-fiction at its very best, and a treasure of a book that definitely shouldn't be missed.

This book is a book that will make you feel emtions from one extreme to the other. You will laugh outloud in the first chapter and more than likely if your a little on the compassionate you may cry before you are finished. It will most difinaitely will take your emotions on roller coaster ride.

Mr. Dam most positively has a gift for words using them at precisely the right moment to take full advantage of your imagination to induce a colorful mental vision of what is being conveyed.

It is plain real to life instances that will make whom ever is reading this book to feel in someway he is wrtiing about them.

I have pesonally lost count of how many times I have read this book and still get the same enjoyment and feeling every time I read it. I believe this book is a MUST HAVE!

When I started to read this book I wasn't sure if I could want to read it, but once I was to the end of the 2nd or 3rd page it definitely had me. The descriptions used in this book made me feel like I was there. What a gift with words.

The emotion exphumed actually made me cry. I think it would be safe to say this story would make a hard core person that is presumably without emotions feel as though he were going to choke.

This book gently introduces the various concepts of studies, through annotated examples of studies.

The introductory chapter on "how a study differs from a game" will be most valuable for over the board and/or Internet players who have summarily dismissed chess studies as "weird."

This work also introduces the reader to the giants of composition: Rinck, Kasparian, Gurgenidze, just to name a few. These names may not be familiar, but in the study world they resonate strongly.

Very enjoyable, and most highly recommended.

The endgame study is a never ending source of fun for me. I am absolutely horrible at solving these things mind you (I got one study completely right the first time through), but they are great fun and make regular endgame play seem simple. It is a shame this one is out of print.

Five stars aren't enough for this wonderful collection.

This is perhaps a book that was destined to be out of print after the first printing (1996). It is also one of my most prized chess books. None of the problems are easy; indeed, most of them are quite difficult even for grandmasters. Each endgame study has been designed to tease out the most fantastic, unexpected, and beautiful maneuvers and positions that the chessmen are capable of exhibiting. Even if you fail to solve the puzzles, playing through the copiously illustrated and annotated solutions is pure pleasure. The positions did not arise from actual play, but were composed, mainly for enjoyment rather than for instructional purposes. But this is chess at its most marvelous and breathtaking!

Reading this book has truly been a pleasure. This book is an easy to follow history of the man, the company, his numerous inventions and how they affected our American history and manufacturing processes. It is easy to see that the author has done a very through in-depth study to have written such a complete and detailed tribute to Allen & Wheelock. The photography has such great detail and clearly shows the art in producing guns during this period. I would recommed it to anyone who is a firearm collector or interested in firearm history. There is no more comlete history on Ethan Allen and Allen & Wheelock available. A great contribution to the gun collecting world. Well done.
