this is the book for economy beginnerReview Date: 2000-05-19
structure of each chapter: 1. the authors tells you the chapter objectives 2. content of the book a. with bolded point b. color figure and table 3. the author intermingle each theory with an application case for you to do some thinking. 4. at the end of each chapter there is a "up for debate" which the authors gave the readers a subject to debate and they have also included pros and cons, the "up for debate" is for that chapter only. 5. at the end of each chapter the authors also gave you "Test Your Understanding" questions sort of enhance and refresh your memory of the chapter. It's a few questions, not summary. 6. then summary, key terms and concepts. 7. Review questions and Discussion Questions. 8. "Critical thinking" at the end of the chapter I think the authors wants the readers to think of some critical real-world situation especially by applying the economy theories. 9. finally we have appendix which explains more about content of the chapter, but they are not the main point of the chapter.
I am a beginner in economy and business field as well, I find this book interesting, I understand lots of economic situation in USA as well as other country, you're not going to believe me that if I tell you I don't know who is alan greenspan, I know him now, and I know what is he doing and why as well. as a conclusion, this is a good book for study in a class with teacher's guidance, it's not a good book to study alone or self-pace study, cause there were lots of cases that we (beginner) might not be able to understand it totally, and if you are not a beginner, this book worth reading because there were lots of cases that you have to do some thinking.

My ReportReview Date: 2005-03-15
A great basic introductionReview Date: 2003-06-10
The authors introduce the basic steps to study, which include the following:
- learning the basic alphabet
- recognising the direction of writing
- learning special linguistic items (bilaterals, determinatives)
- pronunciation
- basic vocabulary
- beginning grammar and basic sentences
One note about pronunciation -- ancient Egyptian languages are 'dead' languages, and have been for thousands of years. Hence, no one really knows how words were pronounced. The best guesses scholars have are introduced here, but don't expect to be easily understood if you travel back in a time machine!
There are pictures of sites and artifacts in this book that show hieroglyphs in their original settings and forms.
This book is intended to whet the appetite, rather than provide a thorough education. The purpose the authors have is to motivate the reader on to more study, and for most, that will probably prove to be the case. To this end, they mention several sources, including the great 'Egyptian Grammar' by Gardiner, used in university courses in Egyptology.

Inventing Teleportation -- and good funReview Date: 2007-11-05
Both books feature teleportation and governments trying to stop the teleporter; both feature interesting characters, just trying to make the best of a, well, weird situation. Both are a great deal of fun to read.
Emperor Dad is very well-written (I only found 1 or 2 typos, which is better than many mass-market books these days!) and very entertaining.
I would classify this one as a bit more of a juvenile SF book (in the best meaning of that word -- the kids will like it as much as the adults) rather than an adult SF, as two of the major protagonists are high school aged. The cover art struck me as kinda hokey at first, but, as I read the book, I decided it perfectly fit with the story -- just the right feel of cartoon yet real.
All in all, highly recommended. Watch for more from this author -- we need a sequel to this one, at least !

4 1/2* Excellent Picture Book/Fact BookReview Date: 2002-11-05
Some passages are longer and more complex than others, although in some way this widens the book's appeal. The pictures are boldly colorful and uncluttered (made from hand painted paper shaped formed into collages), my only complaint is that some there are too many pages of static penguins. True, this is the frozen North, but in other sections of the book there is more detail and action. Replete with interesting penguin facts and bright, friendly pictures, this is an excellent combination picture book/fact book.

The End of a BeginningReview Date: 2004-01-07
Mr. Dam most positively has a gift for words using them at precisely the right moment to take full advantage of your imagination to induce a colorful mental vision of what is being conveyed.
It is plain real to life instances that will make whom ever is reading this book to feel in someway he is wrtiing about them.
I assure you, you will not be dissapointed.

The emotion exphumed actually made me cry. I think it would be safe to say this story would make a hard core person that is presumably without emotions feel as though he were going to choke.

Excellent introduction to studies for chess playersReview Date: 2005-12-21
The introductory chapter on "how a study differs from a game" will be most valuable for over the board and/or Internet players who have summarily dismissed chess studies as "weird."
This work also introduces the reader to the giants of composition: Rinck, Kasparian, Gurgenidze, just to name a few. These names may not be familiar, but in the study world they resonate strongly.
Very enjoyable, and most highly recommended.

If you've ever wondered anything at all about drugs, this book is, without a doubt, the first one you should buy! In fine style yet with compassion for the ignorant (read: US policymakers), the authors convey essential principles, information about every major class of common psychoactive drug, and dispel myth after myth about drugs--licit and illicit--while all the while maintaining an informal, highly readable tone that will keep you chained to your seat reading, wondering:
a) how on Earth a book like this ever came to be a textbook
AND
b) why all college professors aren't this passionate about teaching, which one would have to be in order to produce a book like this.
It would be on my coffee table right now had I not lent and subsequently lost BOTH copies I had.
