The Longfellow Translation of InfernoReview Date: 2005-08-22
Good translation by a master poetReview Date: 2006-07-14
Longfellow's is not the best translation of Dante's work, but it is one of the finest as a poem in its own right. The language is stilted and difficult at times to the modern ear, but its tone and grandeur are perfect for capturing the vision of the world's greatest poet. This is a good introduction to Dante for the student and the casual reader alike. Longfellow's notes are good, but not great. Look to another edition, like Mark Musa's or Charles Singleton's, for more extensive notes.
Highly recommended.

The Best Yoga Book AvailableReview Date: 2001-12-28
Everything from exercises to strengthen eyes, to every organ of the body, some discussion of diet, and other subjects. A true handbook for yoga, if ever there was one. This was one of the first yoga books I ever looked at, and it initially helped me see the point and begin to embark on the discipline. It is more useful to those who have already begun to practice yoga, as its immensity will leave some without a clue as to where to begin, how much to do, etc. Bikram's Sequence is a good start, but should never be the be all-end all.

The funniest part was when he is totally purple and is trying to hide that fact by running around the neighborhood at night when it is dark. Even though he doesn't want to see anyone, someone else is running at night too. He ends up being his friend.

Bet your cowboy boots on this one!Review Date: 2003-03-23
Joe Cinders three lazy stepbrothers, Butch,
Buck and Bart Bronco, spend their days counting buzzards in the sky while poor Joe, an orphan, does all the chores. When
pretty Miss Rosalinda invites them to a fall fiesta at her ranch, the three brothers decide to go.
That night, as
raggedy Joe is out watching the herd, a man with baggy old overalls, a wool serape, and a crooked stick in his hand appears
out of the darkness amid sparks swirling like dust devils. He provides Joe with some fancy new duds, a four-wheeled bronco
and instructions to leave when the midnight fireworks begin. And, well, we all know the rest (Substitute red cowboy boot
for glass slipper.)
This books charm lies in the authors clever use of Westernisms and its light-hearted illustrations.

Beautiful, sad, lovely taleReview Date: 2007-02-10
This novel is a story of obsessive love, full of sad, moving moments, and so well-written. It was enjoyable beginning to end. What I enjoyed most about it was the real main character of the story, though---Hilo, Hawaii. The sounds, scents, and beauty of Hawaii was poignantly described in a way that drew me in from the very first page and made me love Hilo. Although I'd visited Hilo, I didn't truly appreciate it until I read "Lava". If you love Hawaii and want to get to know it better, if you want to read a different type of romance, you'll really enjoy this novel.

In the heat of September, my Book of the Year!Review Date: 1998-09-07
At less than 200 pages, this brilliant, stunningly written, often hallucenogenic novel by Ball, a teacher of writing at Florida State, is a compelling afternoon's read.
Sharks, tropical flowers, Tsunanis, mythology, and a theme of loss make for a potent, sensuous blend in a lush tropical Hawaiian atmosphere.
I fully intend to get all my great reading friends to read this one. A remarkable first novel.

A monumental achievementReview Date: 2000-10-03
The contributors to this volume are all well-respected names in their fields: John D'Emilio, Eve Sedgwick, Adrienne Rich, Judith Butler, Audre Lorde, and the editors themselves. There is impressive attention to including both people of color and strong lesbian voices, something many other similar collections have problems with.
The Reader is an excellent introduction to the field, although it is an academic text and can be a bit daunting for some. It works wonderfully for the purpose it was designed for, as a text for introductory classes. For those already immersed in the field, you obviously already own the book.

This book is a good start to introduce culture and geography. The most important theme in the book is that people are the same all all over the world! Everybody Eats!!! I highly recommend it!
