I picked up the 1st of this series at a local comic book store, and have not been able to put the series down! The art work is good, and the story line is humorous as well as slightly demented. I do however, recommend starting the series from the beginning so as to understand whats going on. I only wish there was more out of the series!

Since you're checking out the Amazon listing for the 4th volume in the Poison Elves saga, I'll assume you're familiar with the series and the twisted genius that is Drew Hayes. If you're not familiar with Poison Elves, you're probably better off checking out Poison Elves Vol. 1 (Requiem for an Elf) (Poison Elves) or even Poison Elves, Volume Five: Sanctuary (Poison Elves), both of which are good jumping-on points for new readers.

This brief volume collects the final two issues of the original Poison Elves series, and can be seen as a quick "road trip" interlude between the events chronicled in Poison Elves, Vol. 3 (Desert of the Third Sin) (Poison Elves) and the major Sanctuary storyline that starts in Volume 5. In Patrons, Lusiphur and Jace hit the road, only to encounter a Dark Troll. This may not sound like a big deal, but apparently Dark Trolls are freakin' huge and each drop of their blood can grow new Dark Trolls. Oh yes, Dark Trolls are supposed to be extinct, so the fact that the guys run into one means bad things for the entire world.

Ending things on something of a lighter note, the Purple Marauder makes another hilarious and bizarre appearance. The dialogue in this issue is priceless.

While both issues in this volume are quite good, I'm not sure why they couldn't have been added to the Desert of the Third Sin trade paperback. They follow the events in that volume, and wouldn't have added that many pages. Oh well.

NOTE: The issues contained in this book are also available in Poison Elves: The Mulehide Years (Volume 1-4) (Poison Elves), which collects volumes 1-4 into one huge trade paperback. If you don't already own the individual books, that may be your best bet.

NOTE 2: This TP had a cover price of $4.95. Keep that in mind if you see it listed at some ridiculously high price.

Hayes as an able administrator and honorable man
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-04
Rutherford B. Hayes' victory in the presidential election of 1876 was fraught with irregularities. In the end, he received 185 electoral votes to 184 for Samuel Tilden. After the initial election, Tilden had 184, Hayes 165 and the remaining 20 were disputed. To settle the dispute, a commission with fifteen members was appointed. Four were judges, 2 Democratic and 2 Republican, there were five Democratic and five Republican members of Congress and one additional judge that was supposed to be an independent. However, independent judge David Davis, who was slated to be the fifteenth member, could not serve and was replaced by Republican judge Joseph Bradley. By a series of eight-to-seven votes, all twenty disputed votes, and the presidency, were awarded to Hayes. As a consequence of the maneuvering that put him in the White House, Hayes was constantly referred to as "his fraudulency."
However, as Hoogenboom explains very well, the manipulations that ended with the Hayes victory involved a great deal of compromise. At the time he took office, federal troops still occupied several southern states, maintaining carpetbagger Republican governments that protected the voting rights of the recently freed black population. In exchange for Democratic acquiescence to his assumption of the Presidency, Hayes agreed to end the occupations. Hayes was concerned about black rights and extracted a hollow promise from the Democrats that they would not interfere with the voting rights of blacks. Once the troops were removed, the Democrats took over from the Republican governments and initiated the process of segregation.
Hayes was an able administrator and had the best of intentions in his attempts to aid the plight of blacks. However, the white leadership of the South was largely unrepentant and everyone wanted the conflict to finally be over. Therefore, while things did not go the way Hayes wanted in the South, what happened was probably inevitable. He was also a transitional figure, as the American economy was emerging from depression and the industrial revolution was about to explode. During his term, labor organizations were forming and the first major strike took place. Unlike other figures in power, Hayes at least had some empathy for the workers and worked only to keep the peace. He was very precise in staying within constitutional bounds and avoided taking sides as much as possible. As the author is careful to point out, Hayes did not break the strike. His role in ending it is limited to the consequences of his actions in maintaining the public order.
Hayes was also a transitional figure in terms of American foreign involvement. He is the last president to keep their focus within the borders of the United States and less than twenty pages are devoted to foreign affairs. All future presidents were forced by circumstances to pay a great deal of attention to the rest of the world. His involvement in the treatment of Native Americans was similar to what happened with southern blacks. His intentions were good and humane, however the circumstances prevented him from making a significant positive impact.
Hayes is often portrayed as an aloof and inept president, which is not the case. As Hoogenboom does an excellent job of explaining, Hayes was an honorable man who was pressed by circumstances to make compromises that he found distasteful. In reading this history of those times, I was convinced that Hayes did the best that anyone could have done, given the circumstances.

This book provides a new interpretation on Hayes.

This book is told from and unbiased standpoint. The author does an excellent job ofjust giving the facts and not letting his opinion or anyone else's get in the way. The best example of this is in the first two chapters which talks about his campaign and then the disputed election, where to sum it up quickly, Hayes did not have the popular majority and won by 1 electoral vote. The book supplies me quotes and historical references from both Republican and Democrats and then gets into of the details of the election. So before I know all the details I already have evidence from both sides. Once one gets to the details it is simply facts no opinions. Hoogenboom does an extraordinary job giving facts and references from the time period and making and unbiased point of view. That is tolled form all sides and does not just concentrate on Hayes' side. The book remarkably managed to take and unbiased stance and still attack the widely held belief that Hayes was and ineffective leader and an inept politician. The author bring an entire new perspective on how to view Hayes. According to the American Presidency Series this book is supposed to present historians and the general public with interesting, scholarly assessments of Hayes' administration. Yet I found this book to be geared to the historians and the scholarly. The book is obviously being written for someone with good amount of intelligence. After reading this book one gains an entire new respect for the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. END

I read this book for a class; changed my major to public relations the day I read the last page. Read Geurilla PR Wired too; both books fed my love for the PR industry and gave me an idea that PR was just more than spin doctoring and covering up bad fish with too much sauce.

For the novice, such as myself, this is a good book to get you started on exploring the canoeing areas of New York. They review the area, the water, and the wildlife. It is not an exhaustive list and many areas we found were seasonal, but that wasn't mentioned in the book. I hope they write another updated and more exhaustive review in the future.

An immense compendium of the pristine paddling spots left in New York State. The authors looked for lakes with one goal in mind: find places where the water has not been spoiled by development, pollution, or powerboats. Unquestionably, they succeeded. The book describes over 100 trips across the state, with an expectedly high concentration in the Adirondack Mountains. For each trip, the authors describe launch locations, scenery, notable areas on the lake, and any interesting wildlife seen during their paddle. Many of the lakes are a bit small for a full day trip, but if one only has a few hours to paddle, these are certainly places to go. The authors did a good job of including sites from across the entire state, and tried to include a number of lakes near New York City. Unfortunately, the authors almost ignored flat river paddling, but a few calm rivers and streams did make their way into the book. Overall, if you are a New Yorker who loves getting away from it all, this is one book to have.

We have travelled a long way with Jamie Ian ever since he was kidnapped by the Shawnee people of the Ohio territory as a young boy, and he met the young and beautiful white girl, Kate Olmstead, and then in other books he went into the Mexican War of 1848, and then in the Civil War his sons fought on opposite sides. But now, in SCREAM OF EAGLES, I find that author Johnstone has brought old man McAllister a bridge too far; he is so old that I'm surprised he can still move a muscle, much less act like the mountain man he used to be.

However with the death of Kate at the hands of a ruthless cut-throat, the old man is forced to make some more trouble for the bad guys. If you ever get confused about which book is which in William Johnstone's EAGLES series, you'll always remember SCREAM as the one that should have been set in a retirement home! Other than that, his standard excellent Western fare.

The new DESTINY OF EAGLES is much better!

I like this one.

This book does very well in continuing the saga of Jamie Ian McCallister. It follows Jamie on his path of revenge and commitment. I would have to say that this book #4 in the series of 6 brings to life the west and a special moment in American History namely speaking the...never mind if you want to know what I am talking about I would reccomend that you get the book because it is well worth it.

This book was a great combination of research, theory, and appliction that would be suitable classroom text, guidebook for managers of virtual teams, or resource for research. The mix of writing styles and sections devoted to specific issues is helpful and gives the book an expanded audience. Some previous knowledge of team management and of issues connected with virtual meeting practices would make this book the most useful.

This was a favorite check-out at the Public Library for my two toddlers until we moved. It was a worn older copy and I could not get a new copy because it was out of print. But the story and pictures stood the test of time. The pictures where very detailed and warm and cozy. It was a favorite for me to read aloud to them and as children are the best critics this has to be in their top 10 as childhood favorites 10 years later. The story was a simple story of an Old lady who lived by the sea and took care of her cats and how on a windy day the cats took care of her.

My Aunt Margaret gave me this book when I was eight years old (now 29) and I am sorry to hear that it is out of print. It is a beautiful story about an old woman and her seventeen cats. Through very simple language and ideas, it illustrates the notion that one is never alone as long as they are open to companionship. I loved this story as a child and appreciate it even more as an adult. The illustrations are sweet and beautiful...

The World Always Knew is the highly intimate and philosophical poetry of the talented and able Diamond Crystal Hayes. Uncut: For to me.../you are an uncut diamond/sitting still in the surface of the earth,/which only beautify itself/and its surroundings.//It gives a shine that no one else can give/or have a clue how it starts or ends.//Everything that passes you by glows/as if higher power touched it.//The smile that comes with all that you give,/no one can afford the price or the cost.

THE WORLD I ALWAYS KNEW takes readers on an intense, emotional voyage into the depths of the author's soul. Frequented with passages of experiences we all may have endured, this book captures the turmoil, anguish and pain of a love forsaken, feelings of guilt and the reality of being abused. With stand-alone titles such as Letting Go, Blindness see the Truth, and The Arriving, each one uniquely speaks for itself.

Diamond Crystal Haynes writes with a voice that resonates with feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, grief and shame, but also challenges the readers to assess their own values and self-worth. Although the book needs a little editing, the passion evoked from these poetic pieces have you wanting to reach out and help the author, reflect on your past failed relationships, face some truths and take a stand for the better.

I purchased this item by recommendation of my voice teacher, and have been pleased with it. The CD is at times a little hard to follow along with only because of the interpretation of the performer. Once you learn where their hidden ritardandos and other little "personality" inputs are, it is a pleasure to sing to.

The music itself is very pretty, although I enjoy the "10 Christmas Songs for Solo Voice" by the same arranger even more. This book and CD has it's simple moments along with it's majestic moments, so it's a nice range of mood. The sheetmusic is written only for piano, and the CD is just piano music. There are no samples of how to sing the songs.

The lowest note that you sing out of any of the songs is an "A" below middle "C" and the highest not is an "F" at an octave and a half above middle "C". There are alternative notes added in the music if either of these are too low or too high, but overall there is a range of almost two octaves.

I would recommend this item. It is perhaps priced a little high, but considering the hours of pleasure that I have had with it, I would say it's worth it. I also recommend very highly the Christmas version of this.

I got an old copy of this book that was appearently once in a library. It looked like it was going to be outdated and of questionable value. After reading the first 60 or so questions, however, I found the book to be timeless and a pleasant sort of quirky. The questions and answers are not what I expected - 106. What kind of wood was Noah's arc made from? And the breadth of the topics is astounding - 658. Is latex always milky?

While this is truly trivia, it is enjoyable, well-organized trivia about one of my favorite subjects. If you have a deep interest in forests, biology, trees or trivia, this book should keep you busy for a good 6 - 10 hours.
