This workbook has been such a big help in my struggle with anorexia. I am seeing a therapist and we are working through this book together chapter by chapter. I didn't think that any book could really help me, but this one did. It has given me strategies to take back control of my life. It truly has been a lifesaving book!

I skimmed this and decided not to give it to my adolescent daugther who is recovering from A.N.; more approrpiate for an adult who has decided they want to make a recovery and lookwing for a workbook--there are some frightening pages that say, imagine you have died, what would you want your tombstone to say--I regret that i wasted the money

As someone with an "Eating Disorder Personality" I found myself in a difficult place before this book. I felt I couldn't talk to anyone because I wasn't fully anorexic but I knew that I was having thoughts. I found this book after skiping sevrel meals and i bought it . I can't tell you how much it helped me . It not only helped me with the way I was feeling but also to understand that I could talk to someone about it and not feel ashamed. I decided to see someone and helped me step away from the "edge" as I call it . It was really helpful to me and hopefully someone else out there. SO from someone who wasn't really an outsider but not really an Insider I recomend this to anyone who is dealing with an E.D. or cares for someone who is.

This book was helpful. It did not cure me. What it did do was help me realize that I didn't want to keep going in the path I was in. After having the eating disoder for many years and refusing help the entire time, thats actually an accomplishment. I would recommend this book to anyone who is on their last leg and not sure what to do.

Written in such a way that it helps people to understand how to overcome the addiction of anorexia and its hold on one's life. In doing that it makes it possible to change one's mindset instead of just covering up the layers.

Good Survey Of The Methods Of Critical Bible Study

Hayes and Holladay give a succinct yet thorough survey of exegesis and Biblical Exegesis in particular. Anyone wanting a basic understanding of the general approaches used in the scholarly study of the Bible will find this book useful. Those of us who want to study the Bible seriously need to have a basic understanding of how to know the words that were used in the original; how to work to understand what the words mean and how they were intended; and how to connect with the historicity and the history of the texts. Biblical Exegesis - A Beginner's Handbook is a fine introduction to these three processes and much more. Very much worth the read.

I am using Hayes' book as one of my required texts for a university class I'm currently teaching on biblical hermeneutics. It delivers precisely what the book is titled: A Beginner's Handbook. I highly recommend it as a beginner's introduction to the complex task of exegesis; why we do it, and suggestions for how we can do it today.

This is a very helpful book for Beginners and anyone who needs to get direction on how to look at scripture more intently. Using this book will guide you into finding a deeper understanding of scripture by taking you through the exegesis (pulling out the meaning)process.

Great Overview of the Field

This is a great introduction to the discipline of BE. It has a lot of breadth to give a novice a good flavor of multiple facets of BE without going into too much depth and drowning one in technical terms and methodology. Very nice overview for beginners.

In the first chapter, the authors introduce the field itself, provide basic definitions and historical perspectives/evolution of the field. In the following chapters they discuss each of the major techniques or approaches to biblical criticism. Once again, the book isn't trying to be an in-depth, all-encompassing resource, it provides a very high level, but good overview of the field and each individual discipline. Most chapters have thorough and well organized bibliographies for further study of individual topics, which is very useful. Here are the titles of the chapters:

1 Introducing exegesis
2 Textual criticism (the quest for the original wording)
3 Historical criticism (the setting in time and space)
4 Grammatical criticism (the language of the text)
5 Literary criticism (the composition and rhetorical style of the text)
6 Form criticism (the genre and life setting of the text)
7 Tradition criticism (the stages behind the text)
8 Redaction criticism (the final viewpoint and theology)
9 Structuralist criticism (the universals in the text)
10 Canonical criticism (the sacred text of Synagogue and Church)
11 Integrating exegetical procedures
12 Employing the fruits of Biblical Exegesis

When I started to read this book, I thought it would be just another coffee table book. But as I read on, it clearly was much more. Starting at about 2000 BC, this book tells the story of the rise and fall of numerous tribes and tribal regions in the Southwest. Each chapter is limited in size and is told in a pleasant newspaper style. The book as a whole is brief for a history of this scope. It continues through the upheavals created by the Spanish and later the American Settlers and on through the Civil War, Statehood, World War I, the Depression, World War II, and on to the Casinos of the present. Each chapter is illustrated with color photos and a large photo of the pottery of the era and geographical region. It was surprising how little I knew of the history of this region. If you have moved to the Southwest from some other part of the US, you owe it to yourself and your children to to read this book. I read it twice, and may have another go at it in order to come close to remembering it all. There is no more pleasant way to teach yourself the history of the American Southwest!

OFF THE COFFEE TABLE AND INTO YOUR PSYCHE

Was the movie Chinatown fact or fiction? In The Desert Southwest: Four Thousand Years of Life and Art, Allan and Carol Hayes tell you the real story behind the water deal that turned Los Angeles into what it is today -- and about the century after century of history that preceded it.

In school, you were told that the valleys of the Nile, the Tigris and the Euphrates were the "cradles of
civilization," but did anyone ever tell you that the southern Arizona desert is considered the cradle of civilization in the United States?

Recent excavations indicate that people began living an agriculture-based lifestyle in the Tuscon basin four thousand years ago. Why and how did the dry, hard-edged, hostile desert become the place where millions of Americans want to live today .. a place where, for centuries, talented artists, engineers and craftsmen have created everything from sophisticated irrigation systems to magnificent pottery.

Don't be misled -- this book would look terrific on your coffee table with its stunning photographs by John
Blom. But what's best about it is not what it shows you but what it tells you. This is much more than a coffee table book -- the words and pictures leap off the page and into your psyche.

Read it and you will never feel the same about the desert southwest again.

This is not a coffee-table book, although it would look good on any coffee table. It's a meticiously researched
history-anthropology-archeology book that reads like a Tony Hillerman novel, only funnier. And it's filled with wonderful photographs (both historical and contemporary),some of which show things like things you could actually buy.

Many people think the history of the Desert Southwest began with the Pueblos and ended with Indian Gaming,
but this book traces its history, art and culture back for more than 4000 years. And it takes the reader far beyond New Mexico and Arizona to amazing sites in Utah, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Southern California and Northern Mexico.

My husband and I lived in the Southwest for many years and thought we knew a lot about the area -- but this
book opened our eyes. We lent it to Hispanic and Native neighbors, who said the same thing. I reccommend it to anyone as a fresh, readable exploration of a fascinating subject. And as a terrific take-along travel guide
to anyone planning a trip to the Desert Southwest.

By the way, if you're already into Pueblo Pottery, check out the first Hayes-Blom book, Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni.

They run into Nancy Drew and George Fayne who came to visit their friend Eileen Reed. Her fiancee disapears and that's where the mystery comes in for them to find out about Frank and Joe's Mystery read the book!

Pamela Hayes's The Lie is a well written, thought provoking book
about love, friendship and insecurities. She brings her characters
alive and captivating, making you want to read more.

Because of Constance Pointer's impoverished childhood and negative
relationship with her family she finds herself full of insecurities.
She subconsciously believes the only real happiness comes from a man
who comes from a family that is financially secure.

Constance's best friend and confidant, Sharon Fletcher is an African
American self-assured transsexual. Sharon is comfortable with her
lifestyle and tries to help Constance rid herself of the inadequacies
that she feels. When Constance meets her Mr. Right, future doctor
Victor, she creates a lie to hold on to him to secure her future.
However, her deception leads to her loosing the one thing she holds
dear, which is her future. She decids to run to a new city.

Depression had taken over Constances's life, until her friend Sharon
suggested she go back to school and educate herself and get a life
that doesn't consist of her relying on a man for her happiness.
Constance chooses English as her major, and in turn it leads her to
becoming a soap opera writer. She realizes that she can take care of
herself and she doesn't need a man to validate her existence or her
self worth.

Pamela Hayes has crafted a great story that is well written with
hilarious and erotic scenes that keeps the attention of her reader.
This book is definitely a must read.

How far are you willing to go to get what you want? Constance Pointer had always dreamed of finding a special man who would give her a better life. She grew up in a poor dysfunctional family in which her mother Sarah hated her and took delight in belittling her. Even though Constance was a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair, her self-esteem was at its lowest point because of the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother.

Sharon Fletcher, a beautiful African-American transsexual, was Constance's best friend and mentor. One day while stranded on the freeway, Constance meets Victor Levesque, a handsome medical student. Sharon encourages Constance to date Victor. They began a relationship and fall madly in love. The relationship moves fast but Constance knows that Victor is everything she wants in a man. He is her dream come true. To hold on to Victor she tells him a lie that will change their lives forever. He is hurt and angry when he finds out that she is not the woman he thought she was.

The Lie is a fast paced novel packed with sexy scenes, family drama, and real life issues. Pamela Hayes writing style is witty. The characters stand out and make the reader think that these are people that you know. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a good novel.

A Rare Gem

Review Date: 2003-06-12
Very well written. Rarely do I find a novel that seems so real. The characters, dialogue, even her descriptions of the sounds, aromas, and atmosphere allow us to almost live the story.

And yet, the romantic tale filled me with the characters' hopes and disappointments and held me through to the end.

Pamela Hayes' style is fresh and unique, and often hilariously funny.

Constance comes from a poor family who hates her, and she wishes for a far better life. She almost has it, yet she tells "the lie" that threatens to undo it all. With friends, such as the lively Sharon, she learns self-confidence, which was much needed in her neglected life.

Ms. Hayes portrayal of Sharon, a transsexual, is also welcome-we see her as a real human who successfully deals with the discrimination that transsexuals often endure, and becomes the successful woman that she deserves. Indeed, a theme in this book seems to be self-esteem.

"The Lie" is my favorite Romance novel. I look forward to her next book.

More than a romance, The Lie is a well-crafted tale

Review Date: 2003-02-10
The Lie is a romance to be sure, in the tradition of...well, romance novels. There's a beautiful woman and a handsome man who were meant to be together. It's love at first sight, and then this little thing called a lie interrupts the romance. So then what? Well, The Lie is also a well crafted tale of people who learn what the meaning of real love is and what is important in life, what is ephemeral and what is lasting. Pamela Hayes has produced a delectable tale with surprising plot twists, even more surprisingly deep characters with many facets. Through it all is the friendship of two women: Constance, blonde, blue-eyed and beautiful, and Sharon, a beautiful African American transsexual. Where Constance fails at self-confidence and drive, Sharon is there to show her what's possible. Where Sharon is sometimes dismayed at people's unkind attitude toward transsexuals, Constance's steady friendship eases the pain. In short, The Lie is more than a romance novel and should appeal to a wide variety of readers who want more than conventional fare. This is a well written, highly entertaining, and witty book. --Ronald L. Donaghe, author of Uncle Sean, Lance, and All Over Him.

Just last year, I wrote a letter to Anne Mazer and she told me that she's going to write at least 24 books about Abby Hayes and now I definetly want to read all her books. "That's The Way The Cookie Crumbles," is one of her newest books. Abby bakes cookies for the "The Daisy," which is the report/news group for the Susan B. Anthony school. When everyone tasted her cookies, they loved it and wanted more of her cookies. Then one of the teachers told her there is a Summer Writing Camp, Abby wants to sign up but when she asks her parents they said no because of writing camp costs too much money. Abby gets an idea, she decides that she's going to sell her cookies at school and it was a great idea. The cookies were selling like crazy but then Abby found out that selling cookies is not allowed on school property or in the school. This leads to serious trouble because Abby gets caught by the principle, Dr. Trane and has detention.

At an old farmhouse in Chicken Corners, New York-the heart of the Catskill Mountains, three men fire their rifles. Inside the house is a group of immagrant Jews trying to escape the oppressive city for a weekend. As they flee the house in abject terror, one body, that of a woman lies dead at the foot of a staircase. On closer examination, the dead woman is a local resident and was, in fact killed by a bullet to the back of the head shot at close range by a pistol. Local Sheriff Charlie Evans must try to solve not only the murder but who was shooting at the house filled with Jews and why. In getting through this case, Charlie must deal with the locals and their legends including one of the Indian Killer, Tom Quick, a symbol of racial intolerance.

Substantially rich characterizations and a very strong sense of place make CATSKILL an above average read. Each character is well thought out with virtually no true stereotypes present. The length was relatively brief but quite adequate to contain the less than compelling plot. However, the strong writing style of debut author, John Hayes, as well as, the satisfactory conclusion make this a recommended read.

Don't start this book in the evening if you have to work the next day - I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. Usually, I avoid "historical" novels, because I get bogged down in the history and lose the plot along the way. Not the case with this story - it's an engaging plot with the right amount of historical context that propells the story line forward. The characters are rich and varied - I enjoyed it!

An historical mystery

In the tradition of E. L. Doctorow's Ragtime, Catskill combines real life historical figures with a fast-paced murder mystery set in l938. Characters from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Sid Caesar and Eddie Cantor set foot in this carefully plotted and cleanly written story. The legacy of Indian killers and the underground railroad merge with the plight of refugees from Nazi Germany, but the history doesnt get in the way of the story. A quick and interesting pleasure to read.

I really enjoyed this book. What you've really got here is a well paced page-turner of a mystery (a good beach read if it weren't September) wrapped with themetic elements that raise it above your typical quick-read whodunit. Catskill is set in the 1930s, but it tells a story as old as America: the conflict between ever-changing groups of old timers and newcomers. Indians lose out to frontiersmen; old, local families are suspicious of 19th century Catholic newcomers, who in turn are compelled to "scarify" Jewish immigrants fleeing Hitler. Look at today's headlines and you can see just how enduring the story is. This is good history and good storytelling. I lean a whole lot closer to Kirkus' review than PW's: "Impeccable plotting . . . heroes worth rooting for . . . A debut of rare accomplishment."

This book is probably the best book on communications cabling I have seen. It covers copper cabling and fiber in different sections which makes it less confusing. It has lots of good pictures on how to actually install the cables.

Very dissappointing. The video cabling section didn't discuss splitters, taps, attenuators, modulators, signal loss and many other areas of video installation. The other sections were somewhat better but also lacking in depth. I've learned more from reading the appendixes in the Leviton Catalog.

I found this book to be written in a way that can be understood easily by the common "Joe". I've read many books on this subject and found that I wish I would have started with this one to begin with. It lays out the foundations of the infrastructure field in a descriptive and understandable way. Excellent choice.

This book is easy to read and covers most topics in a logical easy to follow format. I am a architect and needed a good starting point for understanding cabling installation and various types of low voltage wiring systems (voice, data, CCTV, security). The author emphasizes that this book is meant for practical application, but he does provides good coverage of basic theories without being like an engineering textbook. The discussion of how fiber-optics are transmitted was very helpful. If one already knows the basics, this book may not be useful but I found it a good overview of the subject.

I have been teaching fibre optics (Canadian Spelling for fiber) and communications for a number of years now, and I have read and used most every book available on the subject. I have been able to get something pertinent out of all of them. I have been using "Data, Voice and Video Cabling for some time now. The majority of the time my students are offered these books, not as a requirement of the course, but as a an option. (They are supplied during the course free of charge.)

Recently a class involved in an extensive training course asked about Homework. I suggested reading the issued text books by the next morning. (Big mistake) The next AM, I was inundated with questions and ideas about communications cabling. Further, I sold 12 of the VD&V books immediately. Most of my people had spent many hours reading over and reveiwing all required reading. These students were all eminently qualified instructors in a Communications, train-the-trainer course.

Many people assume that they can learn everything from books without the benifit of formal instruction. An unfortunate mistake. I have to deal with this attitude on a daily basis. However if you want to be close to this assumption, try this book. Always keep an open mind and try to refrain from the negativity.
