A friend of mine gave me this book, and, after reading it, I remarked to him that, if it weren't against Neill's "principles of freedom," Summerhill should be mandatory reading for everyone who wants to become a parent, before they can have children! This was one of the best books I've ever read. I instantly recognized many elements in Neill's teachings, and realized my parents had used some of them in my upbringing. I have bought this book for all of my friends who have or plan to have children, and I plan to read my own copy over and over, as I raise my own. If more people knew about and studied Neill's teachings, the recent violence in schools would not exist, and our current society would be a much healthier and happier place.
I am a product of Neill's method of child rearing.

I am in college and in the process of reading this book for a book review for my parenting class. My mother recommended it to me because it was the book that she based her methods of child rearing after. I am 20 years old and number 7 out of the 8 children in my family. None of us are psychopaths, all of us are quite happy. My parents did give us a lot of freedom when we were being raised and am grateful to them for it. I love life and I love my family dearly. As I prepare for marraige and raising children, I am sure I will look to this book frequently for inspiration.
A classic text that everyone should own

I reread Summerhill after a lapse of many years. And the wisdom - and love of life - is as fresh as ever. Summerhill was not just a school, but a philosophy. Honest, sensible, and very much an advocate for life and the living.

Thank you Mr. Neill for your contribution to the Columbine massacre. Your approach to child rearing has spawned such mentality, in my opinion.
Not so radical, really!

This book was given to me by a well meaning friend, who brought up her kids this way. I loved it and think that the titel should be revised "a sensible approach to child rearing". The book might be a little old but has not lost any of its appeal today. It is a valid, reassuring and very helpful guide to viewing child rearing from a new perspective for many - even today. It took me a while to track down some more copies of this book, but the chase was well worth it. I think I will keep this book for another 20 years and will return to it many times over, whilst raising my daughter...

I have a personal library of about 50 yoga books. This one is not one of my top ten, but it is a soild book. It's like the "Light on Yoga" of the Ashtanga world.
I wouldn't recommend this book unless you wanted a book specifically about Ashtanga, otherwise their are so many other better books on yoga. If you want a book about Ashtanga, then this and David Swenson's books are the best on that style of yoga.

This book is a must for ashtanga practitioners, having been written by the guru of this form of yoga, Sri K Pattabhi Jois. The forward by Eddie Stern provides an interesting background of the life of Pattabhi Jois and how he came to teach western students.
The opening chapter describes what is meant by 'ashtanga' (eight limbs) of yoga, with valuable information regarding yogic philosophy, lifestyle and dietary concerns, quoting from the ancient texts.
Following is a detailed description of the vinyasa/asana practice.
Ashtanga is a challenging and methodical practice of yoga, with emphasis on correct method; from the first sun salutation to the final resting position, there is exact placement of the gaze, the timing of the breath, and sequence of movement.
Those with an interest in yoga generally, or who practice a different form, may also find this book of value, since yoga is yoga and the ultimate "goal" is the same. It is my feeling, however, that without an existing practice and enthusiasm for this method, the book may seem a little dry in the last section.
I have had a copy with me for years, it is an invaluable reference.

Yoga Mala is written by a living legend with many years of practice and teaching experience. I would recommend this book only to those already familiar with Ashtanga, as parts of it will make no sense unless you are. Indispensable knowledge is interspersed with lovely throwbacks to earlier days in India, eg. the part where it is suggested a nice flat floor smeared with cow dung is essential to any good practice space. Gotta love it!
Necessary for anyone practicing Ashtanga yoga

i heard about the book while listening to Dr Hart and his daughter teach at an AACC Conference. i am engaged in an occupation which involves high levels of daily stress and did survive a heart attack so the prospect of reading an informative book of this nature peaked my interest. i must report it was a profound book of: needed information, challenging-supported truth, tender understanding, immediate and long term solutions and finally an "it is up to you" finish. Thank you Dr Hart. T.F.

When I began experiencing bizarre physical symptoms several years ago, I began getting very frightened. Cancer? MS? Lupus? Brain tumor?
Test after medical test showed me to be quite healthy, with no discernable problems. When doctors suggested "stress," I dismissed it as a junk diagnosis, thinking "why don't you just say you don't know instead of blaming stress for everything." Turns out, though, that they were right.
Stress is much, much worse for us than previously imagined. It does not just affect us primarily mentally or with the occassional headache or indigestion...it can profoundly alter our body to the point of near disability. I know -- because it has happened to me.
This book came as a godsend in helping me understand what was happening to my body, and why. It was the book that opened my eyes to the connection between stress and the adrenal glands, and the profound affect that prolonged exposure to stress can have on our hormonal system. Many physicians poo-poo the idea that the adrenals can eventually become exhausted because they reason that adrenaline goes up (not down) when the body is under stress. Hart shows that while such reasoning is correct, it is only half correct. Eventually, the body can no longer sustain the continual demand for over-production of adrenaline and the body will crash. When that happens, the physical results are profoundly severe.
Although Hart spends less time in the book dealing with the most serious stage of stress exhaustion - adrenal depletion - he was the first author that alerted me to this very real condition, and hence helped me on my journey to finding out what was wrong and how to get much-needed help for recovery from a debilitating condition.
Most have been conditioned to believe that stress will only manifest itself as eventual coronary problems. While this is true for some people - the heart attack out of the blue - there are a host of other physical symptoms that while perhaps not life-threatening, can render a person's quality of life completely destroyed. There is a significant body of evidence, for example, to show that chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia are simply the body's response to prolonged, chronic, unresolved stress.
I believe that anyone who deals with stress - from mild to severe - will benefit from this book. Knowing the dangers and warning signals of too much stress are vitally important in today's ultra-demanding pace of life.
My only critique is that I wished he would have discussed the concept of adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion in more detail. However, that topic is adequately addressed in other books - particularly "Chronic Fatigue Unmasked" by Gerald Poesnecker.

Although Mr. Hart is a Christian, it isn't until the last chapter that he writes about Christianity's effect on reducing stress. This is intentionally and effectively done. Nonetheless, I found this book incredibly informative with lots of practical advice well explained. I immediately realized why it took me the first four days of a vacation to settle down and why I tend to have a stress headache on most saturdays. I have intentionally tried a few of his suggestions and they work. I recommend this book to anyone, especially those who have been accused of being type A. I am not type A and I am a Christian. I found this book very enjoyable.

You have to have valleys of recovery built into your life. Your can't be in high gear all the time. I still use this book when stressful times in my life happen. It is easy to understand and was very helpful to me. I would highly recommend it to others. Buy it!

I recently purchased this book after reviewing it for use in a course that I am teaching entitled, Crisis Counseling. I have found it a highly effective tool to use in educating about the long term harmful affects of excessive amounts of adrenaline on the human body. I appreciate its straightforward approach to telling the truth about how easy it is to become an adrenaline junkie and the importance of learning to relax. This book is a must read for all physicians, counselors, pastors, and other members of the helping professions who work with individuals who are in crisis. If you are an individual who lives life on the edge, always running in high gear, Stress and Adrenaline will teach you invaluable tools to help you learn to relax and live longer.

This book is funny and realistic. It's about a girl, Carrie who works for the newspaper. A cute older guy, Chip, asks her to do a secret column, "Dear Lovey Hart", where she answers questions that the readers write in. It starts out fun, she gets tons of letters, helps epople out with serious issues, and gets closer to Chip. Only Carrie's best friend, Claudia also has thing for Chip. Carrie's other best friend, Terry has a thing for a teacher, which leaves her in depression after embarassment and rejection. Marty, Carrie's older guy friend, who's Chip's age, has a crush on Carrie. He wrties to Lovey Hart, asking for information, but when Carrie gives him info, everything goes wrong. Jen, Carrie's little sister soon finds out that Carrie is Lovey Hart. The book countineus and is really exciting and interesting. I strongly reccomend it!
As an adult, I still get this out of the library to reread

Dear Lovey Hart, I am Desperate is basically about a high school newspaper decided to start an advice column. The person who will be dispensing advice would write under the name Lovey Hart. Guess who got chosen? Our intrepid heroine of the story. Sure it is fun to give out advice to others, but it seems that it is even more fun to hang around with Chip, the blond hunky editor of the school paper.
Our heroine started out pretty well....even getting a thank you letter from one person who followed her advice and changed her life. But as time went on, Lovey Hart went from savior to scapegoat, as people who followed her advice blindly and ended up worse than where they started. Well, it got to the point where our heroine can't even tell anybody she's Lovey Hart or she would be laughed out of town.
Well the ending is quite interesting. Also a very funny book.

From the ingenious mind of Christopher Hart, comes another masterpiece in the world of faieies, "Drawing Faeries, Keys to The Kingdom". The premise is that the author was chosen by faeries to enter into their world because of his artistic talent; he is to draw a wedding portrait of the king's daughter and her new husband. The author, kindly allows us to enter into his world with these faeries. It is very easy to suspend disbelief as Christopher Hart tells his story with his usual deft touch. I was hooked the moment I saw a comic self-portrait of the author laboring in his studio, with steam coming from his coffee, extending into the air, and generating "steam fireworks". The book works on many levels: my children enjoyed it, I enjoyed it, and my 3 year-old niece enjoyed it, although I had to read it to her. The writing is clever, sunny, and always humorous. The drawings and explanations are wonderful, and the artistic comparisons between faerie and human, enlightening. He is, I believe, the foremost human expert on faeries and their lifestyle, and, in addition, he can teach you to draw too! I would highly recommend this book.

If you have the first book, "Drawing Faeries, A Believer's Guide" then you need to have this one too. The drawings and instruction, not to mention the story line, are just as fine as they are in the first book. I currently have three of Mr. Hart's books in my drawing library, (with more on the way!) I am so thrilled with the results I am getting from them. Mr. Hart makes it remarkably easy to draw these wonderful characters and thereby really encourages and inspires you to do more drawings and start to explore other mediums. Until recently I had never thought of using markers, pencils being my preferred medium, but I am so excited and inspired by Mr. Hart's books, I am going to start! The best thing about this book is it doesn't matter who it's for, you or your kids. Everyone can learn something from this book.

I first heard of this book from a first grade teacher. We were discussing her relationship and the pain her husband was experiencing during their divorce. She felt that his unresolved pain from childhood had lead to his inablity to bond. She had enormous compassion because she understood his hurt though he had left her. When she read this book to me as we sat in small chairs in her class room one day after school, I wept as she turned the little pages.
Little book, big message, valuable insight, extremely well written. I have often wanted to write Teddi Doleski a letter of appreciation for this book. I share it every chance I get. Sincerely, G. Auxier

The Hurt is a beautifully written book for children and adults. It can be used in a therapeutic setting or for everyday reading. The book deals with the anxiety, loneliness, and upset that can result from the internalization of feelings. The character learns to ease this anxiety/pain by verbalizing his internal distress and seeking out the comfort of his father. Teddi Doleski magically captures the "hurt" that results from conflict/teasing/internalization of unhappiness and the tendency for this "hurt" to grow without assistance. The book then provides the character with ways to cope with these feelings and externalize his emotions, which results in decreased "hurt." I buy the book in bulk and provide all of my clients and friends with a copy.

As a counsellor I am always looking for useful stories to help kids to understand the things they struggle with. This book is so good as it realistically explains the hurt that comes from teasing and parents who make mistakes and how that hurt grows and gets worse when it is not talked out.
Even as an adult, I still use the lesson taught in this book

As a little girl, I remember finding this among my older brother's books, and reading it over and over again. Sometimes, my mom would read it with me, and talk with me about it. Even though the book made me sad when I read it, I was nevertheless drawn to it.
The book comforted me, helped me realize that it was okay to be hurt, and taught me to empathize with the pain of others'. I am all grown up, but every now and then when I am down, I think back to this book and the lesson it taught. Very few books in my entire life have impacted me this much! I will definitely buy it for my own children. This is truly a beautiful and endearing little book!

Nice little reference book. I bought it first and foremost because it was nicely designed. It's brief but informative and has alot of nice images. The downfall of this book, as I noticed after reading it, is that the editor did an appalling job of ...well editing. This book has an insane amount of spelling and grammar errors (for a book in print I mean). I was a bit dissapointed by that, I guess they sacrificed clarity for image. Too bad, it could have been perfect. Anyway not to end on a sour note the graphics and the information make up for that one flaw.

The telescope's invention and advancement let the human world in on how tiny organisms looked, and helped to reveal pathogens and their dangers: now the images of these disease-producing microbes, from viruses to fungi, are accessible to non-scientists in MICROTERRORS, a gathering of microscope color images paired with a quick reference and health facts. Clinical notes on treatment and prevention round out a unique approach.
Let the terror begin!

I have been looking for an informative book on microbes for a long time, and I've found exactly what I've been looking for with this book. The information in Microterrors is organized and easy to understand, especially for someone that's interested in finding out more about the germs they hear about everyday on the news. This book makes you want to learn more about these deadly terrors, and at the same time lock yourself away in a clean room. Definitely a must read for anyone interested in the genre.

China historical fiction's biggest sleeper hit?

It is in the natural order of literature that famed authoress Anchee Min's (Red Azalea; Becoming Madame Mao) significant other, Lloyd Lofthouse, is the latest author to join the ranks of China historical fiction writers with his highly-anticipated debut novel, My Splendid Concubine, which traces the true-life exploits of Sir Robert Hart.
Lofthouse's Hart is not the idol that encyclopedias portray him as; he is a flawed man. Enticed into purchasing his first concubine, boat-girl Ayaou, Hart is at once disgusted and stirred by the thought of "taking bids on her virginity," but admits to himself that "it bothered him more that he found the idea tempting."
Regardless of the novel's title, Ayaou is not Sir Robert Hart's "concubine." For all intents and purposes, she is stolen property liberated by Hart from a rival. Hart's true splendid concubine is in fact Ayaou's little sister. Only fourteen years old, the blossoming Shao-mei is admittedly even more desirable than Ayaou. "I'm not a finished woman, but I am a woman." She slid her hands down the length of her nude torso to her vulva..."
My Splendid Concubine is rife with the sexual dalliances of a white man adrift in China ("What a strange night, a strange place and strange girls"). Lofthouse also plaits his page-turning story with amusing cultural anecdotes that surely must have come from the author's personal observations of China ("Live here long enough, see crazy things").
Lloyd Lofthouse is to be commended for writing a novel that so cleverly balances an engaging tale of culture and romance with a wealth of period detail that will educate readers about dynastic China as thoroughly as any university textbook.
Though a "moral hero" in China, My Splendid Concubine depicts another half of Sir Robert Hart: the dark half. Conscious that historical fiction readers demand potboilers over academic fare, Lofthouse plays on Hart's notoriety, and obviously has fun while doing it.
But behind the scandalous, revisionist adventures My Splendid Concubine is a comprehensible and remarkably accurate narrative history of real-life man whom the author quite obviously admires.

Want a book to keep you reading and leave you wanting more - this is it! It is a fascinating experience watching Robert Hart learn a new language and culture. You are inside his head and heart to hear, see and feel the struggle between his strict Irish Christian upbringing and this new life that he enjoys so much.

It was strange and wonderful time. It was a time of new and a time of old. For Robert hart it was an escape from his life and familial disgrace into a new beginning of which he could have never conceived. Born and raised in Ireland and practicing a lifestyle of abandon and irresponsibility, Robert Hart accepted a position in China with the British Customs Service in order to escape the shame he brought upon his family. Once in China he vowed that he would live a chaste and pure life. This he struggled to do until he met Ayaou.
He had seen many foreigners in China take local women as concubines and looked down upon them as whoremongers not worthy of his respect. The passion evoked in him by Ayaou made him question his vow and he determined to learn as much as he could about this expansive land of China which has a culture many, many centuries older than that of Europe. He did so to learn to accept Ayaou's love and return it honestly and completely. In his quest he met mercenaries and smugglers and teachers and poets. Follow along with him as he experiences and grows into a new life in this little known chapter of a man who was in every respect one of the fathers of Chinese modernization.
Lloyd Lofthouse has crafted a novel that tells an intriguing and amazing tale of a man's life that is objective and yet compelling. It is evident in the detail and touching honesty from both Hart's perspective and that of the Chinese who touch his life that Mr. Lofthouse has a great of understanding the unique nature of human cultures and the clashes that arise when East meets West. In addition the historical depictions and vivid descriptions of the settings make this a book of most impressive stature. The only flaw, and it is minor, is that the reader is left with some questions as to the future. One hopes that this is a hint at a sequel as there is undoubtedly much more to be told of Robert Hart and his journeys of growth and accomplishment.

Love for ones wives' sister is typically forbidden by most western religions, but the most successful westerner in Chinese history is faced with this conflict. "My Splendid Concubine" is the tale of Robert Hart who deals with the matters of his lust and how to deal with them the Chinese way, which so conflict with his upbringing. The Taiping Rebellion doesn't help matters, him making enemies of established and skill mercenaries in the process of protecting his interest and the women he loves. "My Splendid Concubine" is packed cover to cover with intriguing characters and plot, a must read for historical fiction fans and a fine addition to any collection on the genre.
An excellent romance and a study of Chinese culture

Any time I read a book written by a first-time author, I worry that no matter how interesting the subject matter, the writing style will be so amateurish that it will turn me off immediately. I had these concerns with the first chapter of My Splendid Concubine, as the writing seemed very choppy. But once I got past the first chapter, the writing seemed to be coming from a completely different author. By the way, chapter one is a framing sequence which I didn't find to be particularly necessary, so don't worry if you pick the book up yourself. Read on, you won't be disappointed.
Lofthouse has crafted a story about an Irishman's attempts to understand the culture of China in the 19th century, framed in large part on the love affair between the main character and a Chinese concubine. Our hero must battle with his Catholic upbringing in order to first bring himself to admit his love for the woman, and then decide whether he can live in sin with her.
The story contains some scenes of action, and some scenes of sexual activity--not for the kids--but its most interesting aspects involve Chinese culture and the reasons behind how things were done back then. Explaining how fathers sell their children to feed the rest of the family, how rich men can simultaneously and openly have wives, concubines, and pillow-girls live in the same household, why young boys would willingly undergo castration so they can get a better job--these are just a few examples of the wealth of information contained in the book.
The main character, Robert Hart, was a real person--Inspector General for Chinese Maritime Customs--but it is not necessary to know anything about the man to enjoy the book. Whether Hart is real or fictional, Lofthouse has written characters who have a real depth of feeling, the kind of characters you want to hear more about. It helps that the book is open-ended, as the reader is sure to want to learn what comes next for our hero. Odds are that Lofthouse's writing ability will continue to improve and the second book in the series will be even better. I'll definitely be one to buy it.

If you're like me, you probably hesitate to buy manga online sight-unseen without knowing what the art looks like first. Artwork can make or break any manga or graphic novel, so I thought I'd let others know that in the case of The Reformed, the artwork totally makes it.
If I had leafed through this manga in a bookstore, the darkly refined interiors would have sold me immediately regardless of the story. The artwork follows the atmospheric style of more intricately rendered manga where the pages are meant to be savored rather than quickly breezed through. Beauty and darkness mix together on every page in a feast fit for a vampire.
You can tell by the publisher's description that the story doesn't stray much from the usual formula, but the dialog is good, Jenny the heroine is easy to like, and the author doesn't take the kind of silly liberties with the vampire genre that only an otaku could love. The Reformed is a serious, mainstream story for anyone who likes graphic novels -- manga fan or not. And even if you don't care for the story, it's still worth owning just for the art, so you really can't lose.

I am new to Graphic Novels but certainly not new to Vampire based themes, crime stories, and the work of Christopher Hart. I can't spout enough praise for this book. The story line was gripping and unique. It worked on so many different levels. Hard to believe when the pictures are the main focus but TRUE. Speaking of the picture - the artwork by Anzu was incredibly riveting. The idea was brilliant, dialogue crisp, exutition flawless - but most important it was a great read. I can't wait to start this book again!

There are a few reasons you should read this book. First, it's a great story with a fascinating concept for a short story with an unusual twist.
Second, the graphics that go along with it are amazing & powerful - the kind that put you right in the scene and captures the mood.
I picked it up and could not put it down until I completely read it from start to finish which is unusual for me. Great read for both old-time comics thrill readers or anyone new to this genre.
Great work. Thank you, Chris & Anzu

To go along with the previous reviewer, it was the art that originally drew me to the manga. I pulled the cover off the shelf and went "Ooooh! He looks bishi and evil!" I was hooked.
"Reformed" plays out as both occult mystery and supernatural romance. You watch the developing relationship between tormented Giancarlo and innocent Jenny as the vampire struggles against the dark urges of his own nature. But is it a losing battle? Detective Frost, who has been investigating a series of "vampire murders," seems to think so and even as Giancarlo denies his involvement more and more evidence seems to appear to condemn him.
Stunning art and well-crafted writing bring together characters that truly seem alive thanks to their hopes, fears, and personalities, not to mention an ending that has you wanting more.
