From Inside Dust JacketReview Date: 2007-06-08
The author has sharp critism for the dull, spiritless, and fruitless teaching that plagues many parishes: "God's Word is more than words. It is truth and meaning and spirit and life. These can be destroyed by plain, dull, belabored talk that leaves little to the Spirit of God in the Word and in the learner."
Jahsmann lays a solid theoretical foundation for his refreshingly bold suggestions for improving the teaching methods of the church. He begins with a study of the nature of God and of how God reveals Himself to men today. "This book, then, is a study of the various systems of communication by which God speaks or could teach through human agents who are far from being divine."
For communicating the Word through words, Jahsmann draws on current language theory to show that language which really communicates is "odd," that "surprise, contradiction, puzzling ambiguity, the challenging and testing of that which people take for granted may be the keys to the kind of learning we are exploring."
But the Word is not transmitted only through words. God is Spirit and God is love. "Love is the only path by which God enters into the process of teaching." In an important chapter, the author discusses the various forms of nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions, body postures, vocal sounds, as well as art and architecture. He emphasizes the importance of the pupil-teacher relationship and the creation of interaction, response, and participation.
For all who wish to teach the Word effectively, Dr. Jahsmann suggests improvements in traditional methods of storytelling and questioning. Then he shows how greater pupil participation and interaction can be achieved through drama, art, music, direct reading, meditation, audiovisual experiences, group activities, and field trips. His section on communication through worship and sacraments is a valuable part of the book.
Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the need for the Word to be related to the interests and level of the learner if communication of the Spirit is to take place--and "without the experience of God's Spirit no Christian learning occurs."
For anyone involved in the communication of God's Word and Spirit--pastors, teachers, parents--here is a stimulating book to encourage bold, creative teaching. It is an important contribution to new life and spiritual renewal in the church.

Legal Text Does Not Limit Itself to Socratic MethodReview Date: 2002-05-07
Author Comments
PRODUCT LIABILITY LITIGATION was written for law students. The text was designed to provide black-letter law principles of Product Liability through the Restatement Third (1997) and interpretation of these principles through current, issue-specific court opinions. The text differs from traditional approaches to law because it does not simply reprint case law. Instead, the topic is taught through a collection of Restatements, statutes, regulations, law review articles, case studies, and practice materials to give the student the basic parameters of Product Liability. We then expand those parameters through the interpretation given by court opinions, treatises, and law reviews. In each chapter the student is given essential elements, historical development, Restatement principles, a fact synopsis of each case, cites to additional materials, case notes, and case problems. Unique problems with food, component parts, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, used products, handguns, tobacco, and post-sale obligations of manufacturers are considered in Chapter 6. Practical approaches to product liability litigation are considered in Chapter 7. Enjoy.

An excellent and thought-provoking bookReview Date: 2001-01-14
In this book, the final product of an Oxford DPhil thesis, Spence has gone back to roots of equitable estoppel and sought to tease out its subtleties. He has succeeded in demonstrating that equity, by use of estoppel, seeks to protect a party's reliance loss at the hands of another. Spence reconciles this with, and explains why, the relief ordered may range from the nominal to a full expectation loss. He also offers useful guidance as to possible future directions of the law. "Protecting Reliance" is a thoughtful book and a good work of scholarship.
The only pity is that this book was -- just -- too early to include Giumelli. It is an essential text for academics and practitioners.

A Timely ContributionReview Date: 2007-09-19
The book is also unusual in that there are a few photos of the pro-Gaulist demonstration of May 30, 1968 that appear toward the end of the book. The authors are correct to point out that while the rightist tendencies of a good portion of the French population are difficult to contend with for observers who were sympathetic to the student/worker movement, it is important that this tendency must be recorded and analyzed to gain a comprehensive view of what took place. However, most of the photographic work is of the student/worker side of the power equation and then, mostly of the students.
A warning to the reader: this book is largely one man's view. We see events mostly through the camera eye of Hambourg. The accompanying introduction and articles by Katherine Hart, M. Anne Sa'adah, and Thomas Crow provide a solid outline of events -- a good nuts and bolts description of what happened, when it happened, and who were the major players. Here again, this is not meant to be comprehensive. This book is an outstanding introduction to France May/June 1968, but should be taken as a point of departure for further reading.
Nearly forty years after the fact, I still refer people to Daniel and Gabriel Cohn-Bendit's "Obsolete Communism: the Left-Wing Alternative" as the seminal work on this subject. Another title I would recommend is Daniel Singer's "Prelude to Revolution: France in May 1968". Sadly, there has not been sufficient scholarship on this period -- at least not in English. Now is the time for the research to be done; this collection of Hambourg's work is a good start. Hopefully there will be more on the way.
It will also be interesting to see what, if any events take place in the spring of 2008 to observe the anniversary of these events. Any information on conferences, gatherings, etc. in connection to this should be posted and would be appreciated.
