This book is like a diary and a play where many events have a thin line between real and surreal. It is also about awakening, not from sleeping or dreaming, but instead from frozen emotions, when all that is good in life doesn't show up, when someone gets to the edge of feelings and regrets and just becomes numb. This book is also a reflection on forces that drive us in different directions - like ambition versus the craving for peace of mind, for example. The serious aspect of the first part makes you think a lot. The second part has a colorful, maltifaceted personage, who is really amusing and full of spontaneity. It has satire, creative imagination, and bittersweet humor that bring smile and laughter. It is very original, interesting, and unique book. And I enjoyed its unusual playful style.

Perspectives on Spirit Baptism: 5 Views is a collection counterpoint views by five different authors concerning beliefs about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Each author is a learned and prominent theological scholar in his field, and presents the view of his own tradition in clear and succinct terms, as well a response to the differences of other traditions. The speakers cover the Sacramental view, the Wesleyan view, the Charismatic view, the Pentecostal view, and the Reformed view. All draw heavily upon the scripture to better illuminate their perspective. A well-rounded introduction into the theology of spirit baptism, especially useful for theologians and scholars but also accessible to lay people who want to better understand the practice of spirit baptism as it applies to them and their given faith.

I have read this lovely book several times. It is fresh and exciting everytime. I like the main characters very much. . .Amanda Hart shines in this series. She is poised and sure of herself except when Michael Soul is around. The team and their pespective friends make the story become alive. With the story lines you don't know what to expect but can't wait to find out. I loved the series, I wished the series never ended. The story here is where Amanda finds a mystery when she goes to help out a friend in the local community theater. The subsequent events lead Mandy & Mickey thru some hair-raising events til they find out who & what is behind all the mishaps. This series would have made a wonderful television series, but what do I know? I know an excellent book when I read it! I defintely recommend this to anyone who likes a good quick read, the book isn't very long so it's a joy to re-read them over and over. And to the authors (the husband & wife team) thank you for these good stories. I wish you made more!!

A book of excellent puzzles, some are easy, some are hard

This book contains some very difficult puzzles. When I opened the book, the first thing I saw was an illustration with three Swiss maids where each had a can of milk. One can has a dent in it, another maid weighed hers in the house they are standing next to and the third weighed hers at the top of the mountain. The question then is, "Which can contains the most milk?" The answer is the one who weighed their can on the mountain because items weigh less at higher altitudes. The can with the dent obviously cannot contain as much milk as the others due to the displacement by the dent.
The titles of the problem sections are:
*) Stepladders - word change puzzles
*) Blankies - stories where words have been omitted
*) Classroom boners - errors made by students
*) Picture quizzes
*) Funny poems
*) Quizzes and divertissements - among other things common maxims disguised and very complex and convoluted expressions
*) Cartoon puzzles
*) Alfabits - making additional words using the letters of a given word
*) Funny stories
*) True mysteries
*) Initialettes - picking words starting with the same letter from different categories
*) Jumbles - unscrambling letters to make a word
As is always the case with collections of this type, there is a wide variety in the difficulty of the puzzles. Solutions to all the puzzles are included, so no matter how high your level of frustration goes, you have the means to be brought back down to Earth.

A good early translation of Chinese poetry

This book was published in 1954, but I believe it is a reprint from some time earlier. It is, in my view, one of the earliest examples of effective English translations from the Chinese. The style of translation is beautifully flowing and natural, avoiding the pedantry one often finds in translations from the Chinese. Lineation does not follow the original texts. Rather, short lines are preferred, some with just one or two words, giving a more "vertical" effect that one might say follows the manner of calligraphy of early Chinese texts.
What I find especially attractive about these translations is the apparent ease and unforced style, unlike the rhyming verse translations of Chinese poetry one tended to find during this period and earlier. One still comes across such versified translations, usually by Chinese translators attempting to produce a Tennyson-like effect (always with appalling results).
Hart precedes the better-known translators of Chinese poetry of recent decades, notably Burton Watson and David Hinton. His translations stand up to the best of their work. I highly recommend this book. If you can't find a copy to buy, an interlibrary load at your local library would probably make this book available.

Childish is artist, musician, novelist, poet, and a genius!!! It's too bad most of his books (over 30 & lps over 60) aren't readily available in the US. In any case, his poems are down to earth, real life, real words, real everything as real is. A real poet though he would probably say otherwise.
Here's a sample:
"poems that fall like stones"
if i told you/that i walk the streets/brimful of hart/and muscle/a feather tied/to each of my heels,...
"wanking for love"--
there wasnt enough/there could never be enough/and we fought/
for what little there was,...
Childish' poems touch on everything: the crude, the ugly, and taboo without the fancy decor, superfluous and superficial imagery. If you dig Bukowski, Celine, Hamsun, and Van Gogh, among a few, you'll dig Childish. Get his books, listen to his music, all of it is heartbreakingly superb, and absolutely honest.

Además de la novela corta que da título al libro, la edición se acompaña de un conjunto de relatos en los que el autor demuestra su capacidad imaginativa y su dominio del lenguaje. La prosa de Guillaume Apollinaire nunca ha sido tan reconocida como sus versos, pero debemos advertir que los textos que integran "El Poeta Asesinado" han servido de hipotexto para obras maestras posteriores de la talla de Kafka.

Essence of Tamil Yoga
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-24
Review Date: 2007-12-24
The author, an authority in Tamil religious traditions, presents a long introductory essay plus translations of 4 South Indian Saivite poets. The essay is organized into 6 topics: Medicine, Alchemy, Yoga, the Siddhis, Religion, and Society, followed by selective translations of the poets' works. The phrase, "poets of the powers," refers to the yogic siddhis that these saints manifested. That they are not better known to the West is due to prejudice by orthodox Brahmin Hindus: these Tamils were never "Sanskritized" (that is, domesticated, sanitized and incorporated into the religico-political agenda of 20th century Hinduism)--as we might also say of the prehistorically ancient Tantric traditions. Yet their gnowledge of yoga is profound and deep. For example, Tirumular--who knew Patanjali--discusses the inner alchemical significance of the 5-fold mantra, "Om Nama Shivaya," Praise be Lord Shiva. That alone makes this work significant for anyone interested in the primordial yoga/tantra traditions of ancient India. Its importance is underscored by the fact that there are so few works on Tamil Yoga (other examples being Younger's scholarly "Home of Dancing Sivan, Govindam's fabled "Babaji and the 18 Kriya Yoga Traditions," the same groups' recent publication on Boganath, and a related book by Dr. Zvelebir, our present author). This book is priceless for anyone interested in Tamil yoga/alchemy, Saiva Siddhanta, and the pre-Hindu religious traditions of Tamil Nadu.
