An utterly charming introduction to Fr. Matteo Ricci, S.J.
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-18
If one had the option to read just one book about China, the Catholic Church, Jesuits, missions or anything related, this would be the book. Cronin's style is enchanting and romantic. That is not at all to say that he exagerates or romanticizes his subject, Matteo Ricci. Rather, Cronin tells the facts and the truth of Ricci's life and work better than I've read in ages. It was really a joy to read.

Although it was written many years ago, it is not out of date and still well respected. It is a great book, as said in the headline, to introduce yourself to Ricci.

There are other good books about Ricci and the Jesuit missions in China, including 'The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci' (which is excellent) but it would pay to read Cronin first to set the background for the rest.

After reading "Wise Man Form the West" you will have a much better sense of those first tentative steps of Orient-Occident relations, a deep respect for the old Jesuits Missionaries, the Chinese who welcomed and taught them, and most especially, for Matteo Ricci himself. This is, of course, the purpose of Cronin's book, and he does so magnificently.

Rangy outback Australian hero - better than a Texas cowboy!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-17
This is one of my favourite of Hart's outback romances. It is all a bit of a set-up - but it doesn't seem to matter - the romance sizzles and the dialogue is fun.

In this Copper has to negotiate with outback station-owner, Mal, to use his station for tours from her family travel agency - but ends up in an arranged marriage with him. It might start as a marriage of convenience, but Copper doesn't want her parents to be upset and to think that she has married for any other reason than love. The sham of a marriage grows as each of them accepts the role and it becomes real.

A great read. Showing that humans make the wrong choices, but can still turn their lives around. That we should live our beliefs, bring God out of the church and into our everyday lives. Of course the good guy gets the girl and the bad guy gets his "Just Reward".

A must read for both the people and the leaders of ALL the dictatorial regimes around the world (democracies would also surely benefit) . A book for all times to come. His understanding and explanation of where the real power lies is outstanding. What s breathtaking is how relevent his arguments are today and how strinkingly similar the working of all governments turn out to be (as generalized by Hart). He deals with issues such as "patterns and psychology of dictatorship", "power politics in a democracy" and lastly the the "desire for power" and "War".

Perfect to get beyond slopping paint on a wall...
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-03
Painting Do-It-Yourself For Dummies by Katharine Kay McMillan, PhD and Patricia Hart McMillan is one of those books that you probably look at and say, "I already know how to paint a wall!." But if you're anything like me (and I hope not for your sake), your skill in doing more than slopping paint around is not all it could be. This book uses the traditional Dummies style to show both the basics and a number of techniques you may never have considered in your decorating plans. My wife and I will be trying some of these out this summer as we gear up for some bigger redecorating chores.

Contents:
Part 1 - Preparing for Your Painting Project: Gathering What You Need; Readying Your Room and Surface; Making Necessary Wall Repairs; Brushing Up on Painting Basics
Part 2 - Painting Walls Like a Pro: Faux Finishes with Shapes and Patterns; Faux Finishes Using Glaze; More Fun Decorative Techniques
Part 3 - Covering Other Areas of Your Home: Coating Ceilings and Floors; Turning Your Brush to Trim, Windows, and Doors
Part 4 - The Part of Tens: Ten Tips for a Practically Perfect Paint Job; Ten Tips for Picking the Best Color
Index

The first part covers all those things about painting that seems to take all the time and are no fun at all... the prep work. Tools are explained, as well as how to properly prepare the surfaces for painting and how to make the necessary repairs involving those gouges and cracks that tend to occur over time. Even though you've done all these things before if you've painted, it's a good refresher on just why it's important and what you gain by doing it correctly. Then it's on to the fun stuff... actually putting paint on the wall! The authors show you, complete with plenty of pictures, how to try some of the things that you usually only see in houses that have decorators on hand. There's horizontal and vertical striping, clouds, color blocking, and tone-on-tone checkerboarding. They are very striking techniques, and obviously would not work in every room in every house. Still, it'll give you ideas you may have never had the courage to contemplate before. Personally, I was most excited about the glaze and texture ideas. If I can talk my wife into it, I'd really like to try the painted tissue wallpaper. Texture for the wall, coverage for the lathe/plaster cracks and irregularities, and something really "different". The part on covering other surfaces is not quite as long or perhaps exciting, but again you'll get the proper technique for doing things so that the results come out looking professional.

This is one of the few books I sat my wife down and went through with her. While we might not agree on actual colors and styles, we at least had a shared perspective that was more than her giving ideas and me saying "whatever". I look forward to actually painting a room or two this year (did I actually write that?), and this book will help me improve the outcome dramatically.

an enormously important collection of essays

Review Date: 1998-11-13
This collection is a must for all students of the Renaissance, covering as it does a vital set of texts whose influence on the course of western architecture was profound. This book not only explains the treatise tradition, but throws new light on many of the principles which shaped Renaissance architecture, from the work of Alberti through to Scamozzi. The editors, who provided the wonderful translation of Sebastiano Serlio (also published by Yale), have done a great job!

The PURRfect Book for Cat Lovers!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-15
This has to be the most eye appealing book for anyone who loves cats, especially if the cat lover is also into antiques. The antique "scrap" images are so numerous and varied that everytime you look at this book you find things you missed the time before. The design is very decorative and colorful and is a beautiful coffee table book. I recommend it highly!

Incredible Book From A VERY Smart Man
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-26
I read this book some time back. But with Hart considering another try for the White House, I thought I should read it again. It struck me how qualified he is reading THE PATRIOT. The man is simply brilliant. The book is a series of letters to an aspiring candidate for President. The format makes it unique and very readable. AAA+++
