History very much alive

Mark Twain travels, experiences, observes, and then accurately narrates. This book clearly reflects that from the beginning to the end. Twain is a riverboat captain, and travels up and down on the Mississippi river, seeing cities such as New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Louis. He describes his experiences in very lively fashion to the extent that the reader can very well imagine what river travel was like in Twain's time. It should not be forgotten that river travel at that time was commercial and an essential way of getting back and forth. And Twain makes the reader feel that riverboat travel was lots of fun and very adventurous even at that time. The book is a valuable contribution to history in that Twain accurately describes what has happened and what the events mean for those who live in that time period. Personally, I feel that this is one of the best books I have ever read. Also, the last time I went on a trip aboard the steamer NATCHEZ in New Orleans, I heard the on-board announcer say that if Mark Twain were alive today, the NATCHEZ would be his home. Quite accurate!

A Christian Reading of Camus, Blake, Faulkner, Nabakov!

I guess not many folks have read this extremely intelligent book. Merton's close readings of many giants of literature from his Christian perspective are illuminating. My personal favorite is his reading of Camus. It would have been fantastic if these two could have sat down and spoken to one another! While I am not into orthodox or fundamentalist Christianity, I fully agree with Merton's perspectives, and he has nourished my spirituality with his writing. As an English major he has altered and illuminated my readings of these great authors. I think that this, along with "The New Man" and His "Asian Journals" provide the most in depth, intelligent, mature writings of Merton at the height of his powers. Incidently, "The New Man" is largely based on his reading of Camus and the Romantics, and he provides a perspective that is missing from the many critical perspectives that have been offered, even up til now.

llamas for income
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-11
This book goes more into the operation of an income producing llama farm than other books I've read on the subject. It covers not just daily care, but how to actually DO things with the animals to offset their care cost. Some of the data is a bit outdated, such as cost for good animals, but the underlying premises still hold true. If you've ever wondered "Why a llama?", here's where you can learn more.

Here's a description since Amazon.com doesn't seem to have one:

Paperback: 80 pages

Loneliness in a world where billions jostle for living space seems strange, does it not? Yet many--though surrounded by people on all sides--feel utterly isolated and alone.

Most of us have learned that loneliness isn't cured by living in a crowd of strangers. It only goes away when we have people around who care about us--people with whom we can share our lives. In fact, loneliness disappears if we can find even one such person who truly cares. Just one.

Millions have discovered that one person to be none other than Jesus Christ. In a growing friendship with Him, their loneliness vanishes. But in this relationship they also find a new security--a new assurance unknown before. An assurance that they are accepted unconditionally. An assurance of their personal salvation. An assurance that they are of infinite value. And yes, an assurance that they will never be lonely again.

A Standing Ovation for Lorenz Hart!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-09
Lorenz Hart is one of the finest lyricists in the history of American musical theater. He is largely responsible for elevating the process of writing lyrics into an art form. Before Hart, lyrics were usually trite and predictable with simplistic rhymes such as "I am blue, and so are you."

Hart wrote lyrics that are cerebral and sophisticated. His compositions are infused with wit and wisdom. He used complex rhymes. An example from "My Funny Valentine": "Your looks are laughable, unphotographable. Yet you're my favorite work of art. Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?"

Another example from "Bewitched": "I'm wild again, beguiled again, a whimpering simpering child again...." And yet another example from "Lady is a Tramp": "She gets too hungry for dinner at eight. She likes the theater but never comes late. She never bothers with people she hates. That's why the lady is a tramp."

Hart could be wistful and romantic as in "My Romance": "My romance doesn't need to have a moon in the sky. My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by. No month of May. No twinkling star. No hideaway. No soft guitar."

Hart's lyrics are consistently observant and very often ingenious. They are the perfect match for the variety and intricacy of Richard Rodgers' superb music.

This biography is quite detailed with a number of amusing anecdotes. It is a must read for those who want to know more about this endearing, erratic, and gifted artist Lorenz Hart. His contributions to musical theater are profound and timeless.

Love is the greatest present
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-28
It is good to know that there is a new book about love (not sex, as we have heard so much lately). Love which means deep feelings, care, concerns, enlightenment, passion, and pain. ("No Way", "Excitement", "Request", and many others). These lyrics show how strongly emotional about love men can be, and that they really have that dimension, not less than women do. The author reflects on life ("The Smell of Destiny", "New Vistas", "I Live"). Despite of sad shades, it ends on a hopeful note: "The Power of Love". It is a wonderful book for "Those who love", or are waiting...
