I hope Maurice Druon lives -- and writes -- forever.

Reality meets history at the hand of a master writer in each of Druon's books. This one is the story of the growth of Paris from its beginning before Roman times as an island village to Louis VIII and the archives of St. Louis. We can only hope he will write another volume to bring the story up to the modern megalopolis we know as the City of Light.

The story told here is amazing but it is the writing that brings it to life and attaches the reader firmly to the page. The fortunes of the city waxed and waned over the centuries.

After the death of Charlemagne, for example, "Apart from the sounds of commerce, and the ringing of coin from the mint which the emperor had authorised, there was silence on the banks of the Seine, a sort of historical torpor. The awakening was to be bloody."

After that awakening a respite, then the Norsemen came, "...at Easter, 843, 120 Danish ships attacked Paris. The people fled into the country; the city was sacked, and when the ships left they were down to the gunwales under the weight of booty. Among much else, the Norsemen carried away the splendid bronze roof of Saint-Germain-le-Dore....Paris received another visitation at Christmas 856, and several churches lost their roofs."

The story of Paris is the story of kings and saints, men and women who lived adventure, faced destiny and either gave in to or changed history. "Great men do not make history," Druon writes, "but it needs them, and history cannot be made without them."

Too many histories are drab dates and dull records of events. Druon shows us the exploits and achievements of history and the men and women who acted and reacted to affect the way it all turned out.

"Paris was to grow longer, but concentrically, like a tree. As we count the years in the section of a tree, so we can measure ring by ring on successive maps of Paris, the work of the centuries, history's cold winters and the rich summers of prosperity."

I give this book my highest recommendation. I can't imagine anyone, young or old, educated or uneducated, not enjoying it to the fullest. No matter who you are, how well you know or do not know Paris, you are in for a real treat.

Also, if you can find copies of his ACCURSED KINGS books -- about the kings of France, do so! They are the best written and their stories make the Plantagenets and the British monarchy look like a bunch of easy living wimps.

Anything by Maurice Druon is a winner.

I have recently inherited some family papers that include records of two relatives that died in the First World War. In an effort to discover more I have been researching their regimental histories and other sources of official records. Having found out the details of the actions in which they died, I wanted to read a general history of the war to get a better sense of perspective. Liddell Harts book was recommended to me by my Father. I was expecting a dry military history. What I found was a vibrant, in some cases, damning history of what must be one of the most horrific wars of all time. Liddell Harts style is grand and literary. His portraits of the key characters are rich and balanced. His deep knowledge of military strategy and first hand experience of the war makes his account credible. Add to this his impartial professional military eye and his compelling style and you have the best book of military history I have read. His willingness to point the finger of blame was startling and really drove home the horror of the war. His claim that the British command in charge or the second battle of Ypres should stand charges before the national for manslaughter was shocking both in the abstract and personally. For it was in this unsustainable defense of a weak position that one of my relatives died at Hill 60.

I'll leave the complex in depth reviews to others. What I love about this book is that I can understand it. It's graceful and lucid and reading it is a pleasure. The words are infused with a kind of joy. As a novelist, I have to make characters, plots, put people in action. It's hard for me to approach theology or philosophy because of the density of abstractions in the writing. I just can't get most of it. But these two highly gifted theologians have written something of great meaning that is accessible to some one like me. As to the premise of the book, it's a convincing testament to the unfathomable and ever increasing power of the Christian Event. It moves us forward. I connect it with Teilhard de Chardin.

Houses of Ivory by Dr. Hart Wegner is a small undiscovered treasure in short story anthologies. The words are exacting in conveying the story of privileged child's life in one time Germany, sometimes Austria and post World War II Poland. His images are so precise and vivid that I wanted to hold onto each one in memory forever.

It helps if you have some basic drawing skills before you try this book. Great concepts and ideas. It is more advanced than some of the beginer books, but if you have those skills it is great. If you are buying a book for a kid that has no drawing skills yet but loves to try to draw these type of things, try "How to Draw Tanks and Fighting Machines" also sold at Amazon. It is more accessible than this one. To see more drawing books for kids you might want to check my lists on the subject.
