An excellent analysis of victory

Every army prepares for and conducts combat differently, in a way that reflects its own particular traditions and culture as well as the characteristics of the society from which it springs. An army's performance depends upon a multitude of factors, many of which are beyond anyone's ability to control or simply impossible to predict before the shooting starts. In large part an army's success comes from its ability to perceive what is happening on the battlefield, learn the correct lessons from the events, develop new techniques, and train its soldiers to the new standard.

Unraveling the complexities of this process is difficult enough when one looks at one single army. Russell Hart has taken on four: the British, Canadian, American and German. In each case he has examined that army's development in the years after the First World War as well as its performance in the Normandy campaign of 1944. His conclusions will surprise some people. For example, the vaunted German Wehrmacht, which authors have lauded over the years as the best fighting force of the war, comes off a poor second to the U.S. Army in its ability to learn and adapt, while the British and Canadians rank lower still. That is not to say that the Germans were weak opponents or that the Americans never made mistakes; any American veteran of the fighting in Normandy would scoff at the idea. But neither is it true, as many German generals maintained after the war, that the Americans fought without skill and won simply because they had vastly more equipment. By the end of the Normandy fighting, the U.S. Army was clearly better than its opponent.

The strength of Hart's book is in his understanding of the issues involved and in the careful research that backs up his conclusions. This is not a book to pick up if you want guts-and-glory descriptions of the battles on the beaches and in the bocage. But if you want to understand why the battles turned out as they did, this is probably the most important book you could read.

A truly great mystic

Anna Kingsford (1846-1888)is hardly known of today, and this is a pity. She was a mystic and visionary of the first order. This book contains visions and trance messages she received on esoteric topics. Some of her writings are on the level of true revelations. She was an esoteric or mystic Christian, but her views are far from orthodox. Her writings could be used to re-orientate Christianity and make it more relevant for the New Age.She gets closer to the true "Christian" teaching than virtually anyone else. This book should surely go down as one of the great mystic tracts.

Coincidental Shootings is a journey through the consciences of two men: Sergeant Terrence Clayton and Blake Henderson. Both men carefully plan their actions against their adversaries and meticulously execute their tactics. However, they have set courses which will take them to the very depths of their psyches. The two must face their own mental evils and deal with the hate and detest that have defiled their souls. Clayton and Henderson battle one another, the elements, physical pain, time, and...more frightening...themselves. Both are forced to relive the traumatic, life-altering experiences of their pasts, and are now recognizing the consequences of their malicious decisions and actions. The two men discover startling similarities between themselves. From each other, they learn about their own dark consciousness. Although they are alone, with little hope of rescue, Clayton and Henderson struggle to keep their sanity and are determined to escape their personal hells.

Wonderful compendium! Why out of print????
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-16
I live near Newhall, CA, William S. Hart's old stomping grounds, and there are lots of Hart fans out this way. What a treat when I discovered this wonderful compendium of ALL of Hart's movies! Each movie has a plot information, production notes, and best of all, great photos! How Ms. Koszarski managed to track down information and photos from these films, when, as far as I know, most are unavailable, is a testament to her archeological abilities.

I am surprised that this 1980 book is no longer in print, because there's none other like it. For fans of Bill Hart, this is a must-have. I would love to see this republished, for when my used copy becomes too dog-eared.

Research and Methodology with a Little Kick
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-02
Brett Pelham does a phenomenal job of bringing excitement and life to a subject matter many students and psychologists deem boring-research and research methodology. In his easy-to-read book, Brett brings comedy to confounding variables, t-scores, and placebo effects. Throughout the book, he backs up his explanation of research terms by using clear, but witty illustrations. Brett was my professor at UCLA and he used this book for his Psychology Research and Methodology course. A class I had been dreading was made alive, interesting, and easy to understand, not only through his lectures, but through this book! If you are a psychology teacher, a student struggling to fully grasp reasearch methods, or just a person who enjoys reading well written, easy to read books, with a comedic kick, then this is a great book for you! It will not only change the way you view methodology/research, but heighten your understanding of the topic.
