This is a great book about the hit TV Disney series "Gargoyles". It's not the usual Disney tone which makes it more unique and fascinating. They are defenders of the night waking up in Manhattan after being in stone sleep for a millenium. You definitely should read this book.

From medievel Scotland to modern-day America a clan of Gargoyles learns a new way of life, one that is completely different from the one they left and hard to comprehend. With the help of their human friend, Eliza Masa, they learn to adapt. The book is faithful to the tv cartoon series, as are the illustrations depicting the Gargoyle clan.

Brilliant Environmental book

Review Date: 2005-01-06
How ironic that the only other Amazon review of this exceptional book, labels it "brilliant, historical research"....

Ironic because the very presence of Mono Lake is long history, and the lake itself is "brilliant", something which most Californians apparently don't comprehend.

And yes, this book itself is brilliant....It may not discuss all the ramifications of water in Callifornia's future, and it doesn't much touch on California's future itself, but it definitely shows us all how we can still fight the forces of "development".

But then, Mono Lake is already "developed"...Keep up the fight!

Modern David vs Goliath over Water in the West

Review Date: 2006-07-30
In this version of the story, it's David Gaines - the graduate student from U. C. Davis. And Goliath is none other then the water company brought to life by William Mulholland and friends. Storm Over Mono has all the makings of a biblical tale, however, it reads much more like a case study for a class in environmental law.

The small, but scrappy, Mono Lake Committee along with California Trout and others used their dogged persistence to protect one of the more unique ecosystems in all North America. John Hart recounts this critical conservation battle in American history with the greatest of precision and detail -- real, high-stakes stuff with a happy ending.

A little background: Mono Lake rests in an arid basin just below the shadow of the Sierra Nevada in Northern California - unfortunately, not quite far enough from the long arm of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Referred to as the "Mono Extension", L.A. Water and Power drained Lee Vining and Rush Creeks. Over decades, this water project diverted critical fresh water flows into Mono Lake - lowering the lake's level and rising it's salinity.

With the lake's ecosystem faltering in the 1970's, a group of "bird freaks" from the University of California at Davis saw the clear signs in their research and sounded the alarm. Members from this research group, including David and Sally Gaines, led the efforts to organize the diverse legal and environmental support needed to defeat a giant like L.A.'s Department of Water and Power. (If you're fortunate enough to fish the lower run of Rush Creek or explore the lake, be sure to tip your hat to the Mono Lake Committee and company.)

One final note: today, Los Angeles County is home to 10 million people. (If L.A. County were a state, it would rank 8th in total population.) David won the battle over Mono Lake, but I'm afraid the water war is far from over in California.

This book was first reviewed on the reviewer's own site: EcoAngler.com - The Nature of Fly Fishing.

I guess I may be a little biased because I was one of the primary sources for the book, but with some very minor issues, it is the most accurate re-telling of a story that should have been turned into a film. If you want to read a GREAT legal story that is also a true story, this is an excellent read. Oh yeah, it also has the obligatory beautiful photographs of Mono lake. Seems that lake doesn't know how to take a bad photograph! :-)

This is a great book. You will never want to put it down. It will keep you at the edge of your seat. It shows you how difficult it is to be a 12-year-old boy, who gets picked on by his friend's brother, and doesn't know if his dad is dead in the war. On top of that he stands up for his friend because they think his father is a coward for not going to war.
I would reckremend this book to any one. It is one you can read to your whole family.

Summer Soldiers brings the history of WWI alive in a unique and very touching way. This book is hard to put down, as it feels so very real. The anguish of having a beloved parent away from home, the difficulties coping with bullies bigger than you are, the struggles to make the right decisions and carry on when things get tough, are just some of the struggles that Joe copes with in this extremely well-written novel.

This is a good choice for either boys or girls, but especially for boys. How refreshing to find an interesting, compelling book for boys without a lot of violence in it! Kids of today can identify with the emotional turmoil in Joe's life, while they are stepping back into a time in history far beyond today's experiences.

I highly recommend this book as a gift for Birthdays and Christmas!

A great read with lots of historical atmosphere!

SUMMER SOLDIERS is a charming story of a boy experiencing the hardships of World War 1 on the homefront. The bullies he encounters are realistically depicted as mean and ornery. The historical facts are just right and blend in well with the story. Joe is a sympathetic character that all readers will cheer on when he displays his courage and honesty.

This was the very first romance novel I ever read, and it will always be my favorite. I haven't since found an author who can write with the kind of intelligence and humor that Catherine Hart does. Her stories are always funny and captivating, her characters sympathetic and likeable. Hart has a way of writing that draws you into the story with the first few words and keeps you enthralled to the end. Sweet Fury is the best example of her writing I have found. Plenty of writers could learn a lot from her work. If you want to read a truly sweet, funny, exciting, smart romance book with interesting characters and exciting situations, I HIGHLY recommend buying this book and making it a part of your library. You won't regret it.

As a child growing up , Richard stayed at our house, as he was the head of a corporation known as "fusion inc" i believe. At that time, I was about 5, he had told me that his PHD was in statistics. Fusion was a company that helped give new organizational and management tactics for large corporations. The target was KN energy. Later on it was found, when a company called "midcon" i believe dug it up, that he was involved in this counsling scandal in California. By talking to him you would have never known he was capable of these things. Weird huh?

I was a student of Riggs Courier at UCI in 1970. Joe Hart and Riggs had quite a following with their charismatic personalities. I almost fell for it.

The copy of the book I obtained from Amazon.com had notes in it cross-referencing the fictitious names with the real names in the classes so I knew who was being discussed. What a find! I knew there was something fishy going on, but I had NO idea what a cult was developing. ...Facinating reading for those of you who were there.

frightening!

Review Date: 2001-09-01
This book was chilling, and I give it a full two thumbs up for being so clear, thought out, well-researched and well-presented. It gave a play-by-play account of how a cult is created, and how people in need of healing are sucked into it...and trade their lives away for membership in it. It is also a beautiful example of how compelling such cult life is, and shows some of the clear benefits - despite the horrors - of being in such a world: the community, protection, camaraderie, agreement with a firm point of view. These are things we all want and strive for in our own ways - but god, how much these people had to sacrifice to achieve it. They sacrificed themselves and their self-respect...and also built their world on a house of cards.

Mild criticism: I think author could have gone deeper with the book had she further explored the parallel relationship between the cult dynamics and the dynamics of its members' abusive families of origin (as does Alice Miller in For Your Own Good). I think all therapy - and all adult relationships - entails the risk of such a non-healing re-creation, essentially just acting out, but what's most frightening is when therapists, like those in this book, not only participate in it...but NURTURE IT for their own benefits.

Other criticism: the book was too long-winded. I could have happily read a condensed version of this book and gotten just as much out of it. 400+ pages was just too much, yet due to the book's ever-changing nature, it was a tough one to skim.

Unveiling Depression In Women: A Practical Guide To Understanding And Overcoming Depression by licenced psychologists Catherine Hart Weber and Archibald Hart is a serious guide written expressly to be easily understood by the non-specialist general reader. This informative highly recommended work deals specifically with understanding the unfortunate phenomenon of depression as it specifically presents itself in women. Individual chapters address causes of depression, getting help, and strategies for improving one's life when suffering from depression or if a loved one suffers from depression. Unveiling Depression In Women is an ideal book for anyone who suffers from chronic or clinical depression, and those who love them.

A Good Practical Guide to Dealing With Depression

Review Date: 2002-02-14
This volume is indeed a practical guide to understanding and dealing with depression, especially as it affects women. The place of Christian faith in the healing process is paramount in this book. Discussion of the topic is divided into four major sections: Understanding Depression in Women; Causes of Depression; Getting Help and Healing Depression; and Strategies for Overcoming Depression. In non technical terms the causes and affects of depression are discussed as well as possible methods of intervention. It is helpful to see that depression is a natural consequence of life experiences. When it absorbs a major part of one's life, depression has become a serious problem, but not a hopeless one. Beginning with prayer and fellowship with other Christians, the depressed woman can obtain the degree of help she needs if she follows the suggestions provided by the authors. Pastors, counselors, grandparents, and good friends will find this a ready resource.

Karen Donovan's book is something of a biography, a Grisham novel, a history book, and a litigation primer all wrapped into one. (As a litigator, I'm actually thinking that some of the strategies related in the book would be helpful for me in court.) Thoroughly engaging and entertaining, Ms. Donovan has a great deal of respect for her subject's talents but is careful not to gloss over his significant flaws.

The Inside Scoop

Review Date: 2005-03-25
In this insightful and yeomanly researched book, Karen Donovan paints a vivid picture of a man who has achieved iconic status among America's trial lawyers. Thanks to the access granted the author by David Boies, we get not only a ringside seat for some of the last decade's most high-profile trials, including, of course, the one that put the current occupant of the White House in office, but we're there for pre-trial strategy sessions and post-trial dinners as well. Throughout, Donovan maintains a keen-eyed objectivity and isn't afraid to deflate balloons of bravado when need be. All in all, it's a compelling read.

Most of pieces of Boies border on idolatry. Donovan's work is special because although she clearly admires Boies and his work, she also points out his faults. The best reading in the book includes her digging behind the scenes to reveal what really happens in trials, settlements, and negotiations. While Boies is obviously one of the top trial lawyers in America, he often gets credit for things which are actually the result of other events. Donovan captures this wonderfully.

Two children who long for a pet save a stray dog

Susan Lindquist's novel Wander is gentle, quiet and yet the characters and setting are so real that young readers will feel as if they are wandering with James and little Sary along the river, through the birch forest and across the fields. Like children in the novel, they will glimpse with love and concern the stray dog Wander who only occasionally ventures out of the bracken for fear of being taken by a man who believes that a stray is killing his sheep. The writing is straight forward and lucid. A lovely read.

WANDER is not just a dog story!

Review Date: 1999-01-04
Wander is written with an ear to the voice of the main character James. Though the author never falls into the maudlin traps of sentimentality, she captures the anquish and vulnerability of a pre teen boy dealing with the loss of his mother. The dog is intrical to the plot, but never does the book become "just another dog story" Rather it is a story of loss and acceptance, family and the power of memory in healing grief. It is humorous enough to keep your tears at bay, yet powerful enough to evoke compassion for the characters as if they were actually people you knew. It is a fine read for children nine and over, and their parents as well.

A five star story!

So many people are reading "Into Thin Air" and the latest mountain climbing spectaculars. I urge you to go back to the basics and read this book which is the best of them all. "Harrowing" best describes this history of the North Wall of the Eiger.

Recently I had the opportunity to travel to the Eiger's North face. While in Grindelwald, I came across a copy of "The White Spider" and simply had to pick it up. Harrer's sensitivity toward the mountains that were his life and to his peers is unparalled. This sensitivity is intertwined throughout the book in not only his own first ascent of the face, but the subsequent successes and tragedies that occurred there. An incredible, heartfelt and wonderfully written book made even more fantastic when you can witness where it all took place.

I read this book 28 year ago. I have since been to the N. face of the Eiger to look at it and reflect on this book. It is a great book involving the will of man and his determination to overcome obstacles. Over my life time, when I have thought that things were going rough, I have thought of this book and the story of these men. I am now looking for a copy of this book and have an open order with Amazon. I highly recommend this book to all parents of teen age children. It will be well worth reading to all of you. The specific situation is less relevant than the more global significance of the lessons of commitment, loyalty and endurance.
