Unique story. A+ on originality. The Broken Meow really is a great book for toddlers, pre-K and early readers. The author understands young children and their craving for rhyming sounds. Rhyming expectations help guide and enhance both their auditory and visual skills. What a whimsical treat!

This is an excellent book for children. Not only is it in a tone that kids under 2 or so will really enjoy, its incredibly well written for that age and is very funny for children. My daughter absoultely loves all of the noises that the animals make in the book - very creative. This book is a must have for all young children.

My 4 year old cannot go to sleep without The Broken Meow. He is in love with the animal pals and the beautiful illustrations, but most of all he loves his new vocabulary - he Nippy Lafoos and Bipsy-Kerbloinks very proudly thoughout the day. Very sweet story line and a very fun read. This is a must for any parent with small children! Love it!

My kids love a book where I can showcase my silly voice talents. The Broken Meow is the perfect book for that. The sounds that each animal makes had my kids laughing like crazy. Plus, they love the colorful illustrations. It is a must-read for them every night and has quickly become their favorite book. A great book like this is meant to be shared. I'm giving them as gifts to my children's teachers and the school library.

Coupled with Hans Richter's: "Dada, Art and Antiart" and movement's philosophy and works are clearly understood. Graphics are truly great and commentary enlighten. It might be noted this book is German published as the Max Ernst book "Life and Work". Both with numerous colored plates of the highest quality. The Dada book though excels in text.

I have always had a weakness for Dada, and within this quixotic movement a special liking for Schwitters. So I visited the Dada-exposition in the Paris Centre Pompidou last year, and there bought both the Dickerman catalogue of the American exposition, and the (French language) catalogue of the Centre Pompidou itself, which differ in many ways. The exposition was wonderful by the way, and one of the best I' ve seen in many years. Thinking that a morning would be enough to see what I wanted to see, I changed my mind, decided to take dinner in the Pompidou, and stayed for the rest of the day. The immense amount of material was stunning. And the same thing really goes for both impressive catalogues. The American (Dickerman) version (520 pages) follows Dada by way of the cities where Dada developed, and does so in a more or less chronological fashion. Essays are excellent, photomaterial looks great. It is the sort of catalogue you would expect from an exposition like this. The European catalogue, more than thousand pages, printed on very thin paper, treats subjects, artists, and everything else connected with Dada according to alfabet. It seems to me that the catalogue has just about everything that could be seen at the exposition, with exception of the films of course. Although I felt a bit silly after buying both catalogues (spending some 100 euros), I was in the end very glad that I did. Everybody who buys catalogues now and then, know how disappointing these sometimes are. Well, these aren't. They are both superb, knowledgeable. And the people who made them have done a terrific job. In the end you wind up thinking: Hey, these guys (and girls) must have loved Dada as much as I do.

I find it rather difficult to adequately describe Taylor Mali's book, What Learning Leaves. How can a reader poetically describe a poet? I'm not sure one can, so I'll leave the poetical language to Mr. Mali.

I recently learned about the Poetry Slam scene, and it has fascinated me. The power of the spoken word ignites within me a fire that is unquenched by mere penmanship, and I'm sure you would be the same after you hear a poet slam a poem out. Taylor Mali is one of the best, and simply reading his work gives me a whole new respect for him.

The theme of the majority of his poems is education, which include What Teachers Make, Like Lilly Like Wilson, and First Day of School. But he also explores love, grief, and everydayness. While these are different for me, because I've only heard/seen his educational related poems, they still have a tone of authority that demands one see that there is something in these things to be learned as well. It's really beautiful.

While Mali is primarily known as a performance poet, he shows off his superb writing skills, as well as uncanny wit, in some of the poems included in this collection. These include On the removal of the antonym section, Poet teaching Math and History, and The the impotence of proofreading. All of these are hilarious even if you never hear Mali perform them. (I always enjoy watching people laugh while reading because I'm sure somewhere somebody who sticks to the "dumb box" is upset that they cannot have the same pleasure)

I would recommend this book to anybody. It will open them up to poetry in general, as well as the Slam Poetry scene. And, personally, I think it's time we place a little more importance on the arts. When a person can inform, educate, and entertain in the way that Mali does people will listen and be in awe. Although, I will say that I am a bit biased, I majored in Literature so I see the complexity of his poems on paper and as they are performed by him, but anybody can appreciate the these poems collected in this work. What you learn from Taylor Mali will leave you flabbergasted.

Taylor Mali's Greatest Hits

Review Date: 2007-07-06
This book collects the high points from the career of performance poet Taylor Mali. All his classics are here: What Teachers Make, Like Lilly Like Wilson, Playing Scrabble With Eddie. Many of his other poems in this book have a narrower audience, but are probably already well known if you consciously follow the performance poetry scene. This volume was published in 2002, so more recent show-stoppers like How to Write a Political Poem aren't in here; however, the poems that made his name in the 1990's are pretty much all here.

The largest section of this book is comprised of poems on teaching. These are the books that made Mali famous, of course. But there is also a section of surprisingly touching love poems and a section on loss and grief. Because these poems mostly lack his trademark goofy wit, they lack the legendary following of his most famous poems, but they arguably translate better to the page, and reflect a lesser known side of the renowned poetry jokester.

Not all of these performance poems seamlessly translate to the page. What Teachers Make, for instance, requires parenthetical notes for clarification. And some of the short poems, like Gene Pool and Because My Students Asked Me, seem abrupt and corny. It's almost worth more to regard these poems as scripts for a theatrical performance than to see them as poems like Eliot and Ginsberg would have written. But they are still entertaining and instructive to read.

This book is great for fans of Taylor Mali, lovers of slam poetry, or as a gift for anybody who says no one is writing good poetry these days. I've read dark fingerprints into the pages of my volume. You will probably read your copy to pieces. It's that good.

I have been searching for this book for a while, it's out of print and Amazon was the only one who carried it. Great condition, fast delivery, and of course the book is just excellent. As an aspiring teacher it speaks to a place in my heart that I hold in deep passion. Mali's words are fully expressive on what it means to be an educator.

I bought this book over 20 years ago when I was 13 or so. Reinfeld's techniques improved my game immensely, and whenever I get serious and dust off the chess board, this is the book to which I turn. The author dedicated the book to his wife, who wanted "a chess book she could read". It is indeed easy to read, yet what you learn is powerful chess stuff. Now my brother-in-law is asking for a chess book, and I am buying him this one for Christmas. Maybe I shouldn't get it for him after all, if I end up playing him!

I purchased this book in hopes of introducing my family to the great game of chess. (A teacher I am not.) This book does a wonderful job of explaining the basic strategies involved in playing a winning game. From checks, mate, attacking threats, forks, opening moves, mid-game and end-game play, Reinfeld explains the game in language that anyone can comprehend.

In my particular instance, use of this book has allowed me to create additional interest in chess with former non-players in my family. (An interest I found nearly impossible to cultivate myself.)

So, if you are a beginner, or a player who struggles in passing along knowledge effectively, this is a book for you.

I own approximately 20 chess books and have been playing since I'm about 7 years old. I'm not a championship player, but I'm above average partly due to the principles I learned from this book over 30 years ago. I have rated it a 5, however, if I could I would have rated it a 6!

What is so wonderful about this book is its readability. It teaches principles of play that can be applied in many situations and it also does it with humor. How many chess books have you seen that actually use humor? I think the dedication that Fred Reinfeld wrote for his wife says it all "FOR MY WIFE... who asked me for a chess book she could read."

The book begins with the most important aspect of the game i.e. checkmating and how to avoid it. It also covers when to resign and the relative values of the pieces. It looks at the stengths of each piece and talk about how to get the most out of your pieces including the pawns.

The book stays on course from here and looks at the three strongest moves keeping the focus on check and checkmate in chapter 4 which is what the game is about. Specifically, it discusses forking check, discovered check and double check. These are important tactics that should be covered first from both an offensive and defensive point of view. In a similar fashion it dedicated a chapter each on the next two strongest moves capturing threats and pawn promotion. Each of these chapters is very clear and well explained with lots of diagrams.

In the next section, the book goes on to discuss PRINCIPLES of opening play and gives five general rules for an opening. In the next section, it discusses the middle game and the two principles of giving your pieces mobility and making them cooperate.

The last three chapters of the book cover the endgame, pinning and how to use sacrifices to win. The appendix includes a chess refresher witht the basic rules of chess. In short, this 190 page book gives new players a game plan, tactics, easy to follow principles and a good overall felt sense of what the game is about. If you buy this book, it will truly teach you "How to be a Winner at Chess."

If you are an intermediate player, I still think this book is worth reading to reinforce principles and to help you to teach young people how to play. If you are advanced intermediate or better, you may want to purchase something else. However, this is a classic book and you can get a used copy for under $1.00 many times. If it's not useful to you, you can give it a way or use it to start a fire. Either way, you'll get your money's worth.

This was the first book about chess I ever bought. By studying it, I taught myself how to play chess when I was still a child. It contains a complete list of the rules, and explains them so that anyone who reads English can understand them.

If you just want to learn how to play Chess, and don't have anyone to teach you, this is the only book you need.

This book was the first book I ever read on Chess and it hooked me on the game. Although other books have more detail or are more comprehensive, this book gives the basic concepts of the game. It is quite readable. It is suitable for introducing a novice to basic strategies before they are committed to learning serious Chess. I still use concepts I learned from this book 30 years ago to teach kids chess today.

Hmmmm .... I'm all for first loves finally getting it right the second time around after time apart provided both are free to be together in every which way. It was a happy ending for Donna Hanover ... I mean after all ... her second husband "saw her first" as teenagers. Just like the fictional characters Thomas and Linda in Anita Shreve's "The Last Time They Met" and TV sweethearts Joey and Caitlin from the Canadian teen drama DeGrassi: The Next Generation ... it's more true to life than one would believe that reunions can be this thrilling. That said, on the flip side of such wonderful love tales, is if you read this you might (A) seek out your high school sweetheart despite being partnered; (B) worry that your partner might do the same and leave you with the raw end of the deal. And even more freaky a thought is for all the people who believe in past lives... what if you or your significant other ends up searching for their past life sweetheart? We can all conjure up more scary scenarios. Nonetheless, if you need a great dose of pure unrestrained true life love stories to get you misty-eyed ... read on and dream on from cover to cover! Just excercise good judgement should you decide to hire a private detective who specializes in being a "Finder of Lost Loves".

This book-The Mystery at Hanover School- is the seventh one of eight Ghost Twins books, and I think it's really cool- if you're eight or nine. It's about two siblings, Robbie and Beka, who became ghosts fifty years ago. They decide to check out their old school only to find that it's in big trouble. The school needs supplies like computers and books for the library, but grouchy Mr. McKritty, who runs a hardware store in Juniper, doesn't want to give Hanover the supplies they need. How can Robbie and Beka change his mind?

It is amazing how a person's life can be summarized in only a chapter or two but this book helps bring these men to life with so little space. So much is focused on George III and IV and even William IV (Duke of Clarence). It is nice to see how the other brothers turned out. I got a little clearer image of the Duke of Cumberland. He isn't quite the monster so many authors portray him as. Above all I enjoyed the Duke of Sussex and how he went a little against the grain and was a man of the people but still enjoyed his royal privileges. A great read.

Royal Scandal on a grandiose scale

Review Date: 2000-12-16
They have to reprint this book one day - or perhaps the time is right to do a more indepth look at the lives of the Dukes - really this book and Dorothy Margaret Stuart's book "The Daughters of King George" are the only substantial books written on the children of King George III. (with the exception of the Prince Regency of course)

It is surprising there haven't been more books on the Royal Dukes,. their lives were rich with juicy scandal, (murders, gossip of incest, whippings, failed careers, prostitutes, secret marriages and scads of illegitimate children). Of course as Fulford also shows us their lives were also full of a great deal of excellent public service. The Duke of York in the army, Duke of Clarence (later William IV) the Navy, and the Duke of Cumberland in Hanover.

Fulford allows a chapter for each of the six Royal Duke's as well as one by way of an introduction of their parents, King George and Queen Charlotte, which includes some detail on their childhood and the dominance which the Dukes's father held over them throughout their adult lives.

This is an intelligent and entertaining look at The Royal House of Hanover, beautifully researched and humourously presented. A great little reference book.

This exciting biography manages to bring to life the mood of 14th Century France and to give a vivid portrait of "the Maid" from contemporary accounts, which are always clearly credited.

Beevers achieves this without missing the point of Joan's canonisation, so often misconstrued as being due to patriotism or even to some kind of early feminist or anti-establishment streak, with which some always try to retrospectively credit her.

After a simple account of what we know of her family life, and riveting detail in the battles and her attempts to reach the Dauphin, Beevers gives an accurate and crystal-clear historical summary of her trials, including much excellent background on the personalities involved.

This book makes a wonderful spiritual and historical gift for a teenager, and is scholarly, highly readable and inspiring. It is the perfect choice for those who seek Joan's true story without any ideological trimmings.

Powerful without the feminist mythology!

I'm a woman and I'm all for female heroines, but so many of Joan's biographers err on the side of feminism. John Beevers does not. He shows her as a real, solid, Christ-centered young lady who led a nation in a time of peril. She was called for a specific purpose and this book gives the most realistic, unfabricated version of her life. One of the best biographies I have ever read. I couldn't put it down!

First published in 1957, this book is a must-read for snake lovers. And by "snake lovers" I refer to those who have genuine respect for snakes in their natural habitats -- not those who collect exotic or native snakes, like trophies, to be ill-kept as "pets" in their homes. Author Carl Kauffeld had a genuine respect & affection for snakes, and it shows in every step of his adventures, which takes him from swamps to deserts to mountains and flatlands throughout the U.S. Very well-written and fast-paced, this book is a fascinating read, made even more so by the fact that it was written by a man who understood -- a full 50 years ago -- the impact of human development on snake habitat, plus the very real and urgent need for habitat conservation to protect snake populations. Today's kids are being brought up on a diet of thrill-seeking wildlife "hunters" on television, who -- oblivious to their surroundings -- barge willy-nilly into the outdoors, seeking out those hapless creatures deemed dangerous enough to boost TV ratings. Author Kauffeld, by contrast, notices (read that: revels in) his surroundings -- the sight of a Carolina moon rising through moss-draped oaks; the fragrance of a swamp magnolia in the Jersey Barrens.... Along the way, he discovers snakes. Lots of them. His journey, richer for his unique perspective, is ours to share in this book.

I read this book about 1961. It was a big factor in my majoring in Biology, and then to a PhD in Zoology (Herpetology). The stories he tells makes the thrill of the naturalist's quest truly come alive! Give it to any young person who seems interested in our much-maligned fellow creatures! It's an opportunity for "magical" experiences ..... which reminds me: I'm overdue for another Oketee Diamondback hunt!
