Great book in moderately thin volumeReview Date: 2006-02-27
This book is nicely put together and covers most of the major religions in Asia.
I was somewhat sceptical when I saw the book at first, but pleasantly surprised when I started to realise that mr Koller had been able to squeeze down so much of well thought and worked through philosophies in this relatively thin book.
CONTENTS
However, the bigger attention is put on Indian philosophies (including sum of Vedic scripts, Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and much more). Then again it makes sence if you go through all those different philosophies, as one can find few familiar elements here and there in philosophies/religions that come after Indian ones.
Maybe about 2/3 of the book is about (originally) Indian religions, including then also Buddhism in other countries. For example one of the chapters included there is about Japanese Zen Buddhism.
Another third is about Chinese religions as Confucianism and Taoism.
There is also one chapter about Islam. Maybe not really fair amount comparing with other religions, but still gives basic idea about it.
Couldn't find much, if anything, about Sikh religion... even if it might have been mentioned in few places. Even if not major religion, would have still been interesting to find at least a page about it.
STYLE
As for me, I rather think (concidering previous review) this book could be said have been writen from "believers" or even emic perspective.
It can slightly seam as the author could be potential follower of all those philosophies/religions, and this feeling of inside perspective is one of the best things about this book.
You can feel the respect by the writer for those philosophies he describes, and becouse of that this book is deffinetly not just another average dull philosophy book.
The philosophies come alive.
It is in same time clearly more than just some nice little philosophy book with basic facts, pretty pictures and friendly feelings, but without any depth.
There might be couple of the spots where you really have to think little extra, but this is only part of the fun when you figure it out.
If you really like philosophy, specially Asian, this is distinctly THE book to have.
RECOMMENDATIONS
This nice work has been one of my philosophy class books (yes, it does have questions after each chapter but it can be ignored or used for challenging oneself).
Nevertheless, I have been recommending it to everybody who might be interested of this kind of material and definitely going to continue with it.
Hopefully my review didn't become too long after all and can help you somehow.
If you get it: enjoy!! :)

The drawback of this, is a dispassionate, sometimes tedious delivery. The discussions of the various schools of Hinduism, are mind-boggling in their implications, but also difficult. The advantage of this, is the direct converse. The subject matter demands careful attention, not adulation.
I recommend this book for students and perhaps those with an interest in culture, but especially for those who think Western thought is too logical and lifeless. Asian philosophies have a rigor all their own, and this book should tease the proselytes from the enlightened.

If one were to look for a good read, this book is a good start for a newbie.
This book could be used as a pre-cursor to an indepth research into new technologies.
ADSL, ATM, ISDN is mentioned in the book.
Lastly, this book is not drab and has some humour in it.

Cupids Arrow
Desperate for money for her family, Brooke Lackwood poses as a highway man and attempts to rob a carriage. Little does she know that it belongs to her childhood crush, Marquis Ridgefield, who recently returned to the area. He also happens to be the local magistrate. Ridgefeild is enchanted by her proud and fiery spirit and decides not to bring her in, rather give her employment at his recently inherited estate. Her younger sister and his son attempt to play cupid to bring these two together while a jealous rival conspires to keep them appart.
Meg's Secret Admirer
Meg MacDonald, in a bout of loneliness, impulsively sends herself flowers from a secret admirer. The poor relation living with her aunt and beautiful cousin often sits in the shadows and never dances. Spoiled wastrel, Sebastian Stuart is about to sent off to Jamaica as punishment by his father for his desolute life. He discovers Meg's charade and desides to keep it up by sending her notes and bobs from a secret admirer. What at first was a harmless 'good deed' by Sebastian, turns into a cruel joke on Meg when the truth is revealed. Only then does he realize what beautiful person she is inside and out. She the one who makes him into a better man and sets out to make everything right in a Valentines proposal.
One Special Night
Doctor Grant Radnor, new in town, has his eye on Cara Martin, but the texan beauty won't give him the time of day. She'll never marry. He's heard the rumors of her 'fits', but that won't keep him away. Grant is out to prove that his love will over come both obstacles.
Loved these stories. All well written and full of *sigh* moments. Get a used copy if you can, its worth it.

"Cupid's Arrow" by Constance Hall is about a very proud young woman whose family is experiencing financial problems. So she reluctantly decides to rob a carriage not knowing that it is the new magistrate (someone she has always had a crush on).
"Meg's Secret Admirer" by Cheryl Holt is about an emotionally abused woman who finally gets to have a little excitement. It started as a game, and became a wonderful tale of true love.
"One Special Night" by Jackie Stephens is a sweet love story. It is so easy to fall in love with the hero. These were two people destined to be together.
So if you are someone who likes to root for the underdog, you will love these three stories.

It will steal your heartReview Date: 2000-07-10
Cupid's Arrow by Constance Hall (Cornwall, England - 1802) I found the opening in Cupid's Arrow cute, a great entrance into a sweet short story. Fitz and Brooke have an interest in each other, but commitments and consequences with those in their families is most likely to keep them apart...until two little cupids step in, that is.
Meg's Secret Admirer by Cheryl Holt (London, England - Popular Society) This has a heroine who will pull at your heartstrings and a hero who will most likely at some point aggravate you, and then win you over. In this one Meg creates her own secret admirer, but faces some unusual circumstances when she is found out. The gift giving and parties create a Valentine atmosphere.
One Special Night by Jackie Stephens (Blue Plains, TX - 1849) I appreciate it when an author successfully creates that early Texas atmosphere, and Ms. Stephens is very good at it. Her characters were touching, and her town was realistic. Two kinds souls ache to reach out, but their past and present circumstances and others around them continue to stand in the way. Let's hope the Valentine dance is the answer to Doc and Cara's need to find an eternal love.

Deep emotion and lots of surprises!!!Review Date: 2006-06-21
However, coming back to their homes in Los Angeles, reality hits hard. Shelby learns of Frank's incredibly dysfunctional yet close knit traditional Mexican family. His mother makes no secret of the fact she hates Frank for his past mistakes. A grandmother adores him and a younger brother idolizes him.
When Frank's moods and behavior start taking wild swings, Shelby realizes there is much she has yet to learn about her mysterious new husband. The only things she is sure about is his love for her and for his boat and the sea. Both are about to be challenged.
Drugs and drug use figure hugely in this book and their effects on Frank and his brother Ray play an integral part. Illegal drug activity is at the root of most if not all the hatred, tension, loyalty and fast money which define the lives of the two brothers and their family.
Just when things are already confusing and volatile, Frank's ex-wife Gloria is found murdered. With drugs such a part of his past, Frank now has some major questions and decisions...who did kill his ex? Were drugs involved? The police seem dead certain that Frank is their man, but is he really? There is lots of circumstantial evidence, and Frank admits he was there the night she died.
At the very lowest point in this family's life, when there is no place to turn and no one else to help them, Frank and Shelby finally turn to the God of his grandmother and her mother, Dawn.
This is a really touching love story containing mystery and religion and is a book with deep emotion and lots and lots of surprises.
