Manly P. Hall gives all students and initiates the essential knowledge of proceeding on the path of the Ancient Wisdom (and the Mystery Schools). Further recommended reading are the books- "ZELATOR"; "KYBALLION"; "The Initiation of the World"; and all the books of Rudolph Steiner and Alice Bailey. Those wishing to advance can also join the Rosicrucians (AMORC).

In the age when the number of false prophets grows like mushrooms after rain, this book will help an aspirant avoid the many pitfalls that are thrown under his feet. Painfully honest and to the point, this book gives best advice to those who aspire to become students, disciples, or some day adepts of the BL - no, ambition will not get you there. Those who have sight will see the wisdom, which they need to have to qualify for the entrance into the Eternal. The ABC of occult studies; a book which will be my permanent companion. My most sincere gratitude goes to Mr. Hall for living such priceless jewel for future generations.

The pursuit of knowledge, the practice of service to one's fellows, hardship and suffering and ultimately, a true comprehension and temperance of our lower natures, all combine to lead us to a better understanding of our existence. In this curious and important essay, Hall describes the shared destinies of all of us; and that is our pursuit of truth and our conscious or unconscious hunger for a meaningful relationship with the Divine. He warns and laments about our modern tendencies to material gain and instant gratification in all things worldly. Over time, he suggests, the methods used in attaining material gratification has translated into our spiritual endeavours. One cannot deny the plethora of `expert' advise out there, presenting in many guises, to attain Wisdom in "ten easy steps". Become an all-powerful, influential guru and mammoth success, getting rich in the process. For a substantial fee, ladies and gentleman, we can show you the secrets of the ancients and throw in a no-fail diet to boot. This, of course, is not the road to Wisdom. The true road, Hall suggests, is a long and arduous one, fraught with suffering and difficult lessons, where one's hope lies in one's sincere labour, courage, true aspiration and egoless silence.

This short essay is recommended to anyone interested in sound and universal advice in their pursuit of a greater understanding of themselves and existence.

Live the Life as the Ancient Masters

Review Date: 2003-04-01
In this short work by Manly Hall, he digresses into the little known subject of how the ancient masters of the mystery schools go about teaching their students. Much has changed in the way of secret societies since the days of Plato and Pythagoras, however, the principles are generally the same. Silence is still of utmost importance. In the times of Pythagoras, silence was not only a virtue, but something your life depended upon. Today, you will not get crucified or burned at the stake for revealing secrets from a society, however, your integrity and Will are disseminated. Silence today stands as a virtue more than anything, but one that most people neglect. This short book also looks into the practices of the Student, Disciple and Initiate, as the basic three grades of the practitioner once they have entered a mystery school. Even today all of these attitudes that Hall speaks about have complete practicality in today's culture. It is less about environment and more about the demeanor of the practitioner. If one does not take in all of the ideas represented in this book, surely one or two of them will cling to the readers mind as not only possible, but inspirational. For those that have been practicing the secret arts for a period of time, this book may serve as a good reminder of why they are doing what they do to begin with.

I purchased this book since I had scheduled a cooking session with the author, Maureen Fant, to learn more about Roman cuisine. When it was delivered, I was blown away by not only the recipes but the beautiful pictures. I could hardly wait to get there.

I met Maureen in an area of Rome called Testaccio, a working class neighborhood yet largely undiscovered by tourists. We toured their fresh market and several specialty shops, then went to her apartment to cook what we had bought. It was a memorable meal, simple yet elegant.

Now that I am home, I often pick up the book and the pictures bring back such memories of my whole Roman stay. But this is no coffee table book! The recipes are delicious and easy to follow. She does an excellent job of providing you with the background as well as the steps, so you can understand what make the Roman cuisine unique among Italian styles of cooking.

If you purchase this book, and try the recipes, chances are you may be booking that flight to Rome in the near future. (Maureen offers her courses through ContextRome.com)

I lived in Rome for more than 18 years and return frequently to visit family there. This book beautifully captures the Romans' love affair with food in it's simple deliciousness. Meat and produce markets have always been the bloodline of Italian cuisine. They're one of the things I miss most about life in the eternal city. I love that the rich photographs in this volume and the accompanying narrative transport you to the city streets. Beware they will make you want to visit. The recipes are authentic and the ones I've tried are delicious. And they're relatively simple too. I've given this book as a gift to several people now. If you love Rome or food, or both, I recommend this book!

Excellent effort to define Roman Cooking

This review is written from the perspective of someone that has been studying cooking for 25 years, and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years. I have more than 100 cookbooks on Italian cooking and have traveled to Italy many times. I am a tough critic on Italian cookbooks.

This book begins with a little history of Italian cooking, the outdoor markets in Rome, and the distinct differences in the neighborhoods. Then the book discusses the following topics from a Roman perspective:
Coffee
Pasta
Greens
Pizza
Cucina Ebraica (Jewish Cooking)
Wine
Dolci (dessert)

The recipe section is subdivided as follows:
Antipasti
Primi (first course: soup, pasta, pizza)
Secondi (second course: meat and fish
Contorni (side dishes: vegetables)
Dolci (sweets)

The photography in this book is fabulous. They did a wonderful job of capturing what it is like to walk down the streets in Rome. As you turn the pages each new photo is another little peak into Roman life and food.

The recipes are very authentic. I was pleased to see that the recipe for Carbonara did not include the Americanized version which adds cream. This recipe is for the Carbonara that you would find in Rome. Of the recipes that I have prepared (approximately 50% of the book) all have turned out exactly as I expected them. A few of the recipes are time consuming. But, making homemade stuffed pasta is not something that happens in a flash.

If you are looking for a nice authentic cookbook on the cooking of Rome, written for Americans, you will love this book. My only complaint is that the book left me wanting more photographs and more recipes. Overall, this is an excellent book for those that love Italian cooking.

I bought this cookbook in order to prepare a romantic multi-course meal for my husband and we were not disappointed. The recipes were easy to follow and the food tasted fantastic! This book is defintely only for those who love to cook because the recipes do take quite a bit of time to prepare. The four course menu I chose took roughly three hours to complete, but the time was well worth it for the incredible food!

For anyone interested in business in Latin America, this book is an instant classic--a seminal strategy book, in the mold of Porter, Ohmae, Hamel, and Prahalad. It's original and innovative conceptual framework, comprehensive statistical data, and rich and insightful cases will prove invaluable to executives, consultants, professors and students. Although the Latin American region is currently experiencing a "rough patch", scores of firms continue to implement winning strategies and reap huge benefits. Robles, Simon, and Haar illustrate these strategies with tremendous insight and depth of analysis. As Latin America recovers economically and growth takes off, as it eventually will, this book will serve as an indispensable road map for companies doing business (or considering business) in the region.

A Must Read Before Investing In Latin America
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-24
This timely book is a must for anyone contemplating investing or trading in Latin America. It offers the most complete insight of the region's business/economic climate. Moreover, it serves as an excellent guide to avoid the many stumbling blocks often encountered by many U.S. businessmen in formulating a business case or strategy. The chapter on 'Reaching the New Latin Consumers' is most instructive. Here the authors' thorough analysis on identifying and reaching the consumer is vital to any business case. Too often U.S. companies fail to fully understand the Latin consumer in terms of demand and purchasing power. The Mexican and Brazilian case studies presented are outstanding. Again this gem of a book is indispensable to anyone interested or planning to go after the 600 million population south of the border.

Keyes to Understanding Latin American Business Strategies

Review Date: 2002-11-08
Many neophytes think of Latin America as a large, undifferentiated arena in which to sell. Robles, Simon, and Haar show otherwise. Based on more than 100 interviews with key decision makers, they talk about how to reach tens of millions of customers and clients across Latin American. They delve into the impact of technology on the value chain in Latin America and show likely growth scenarios. But, their major contribution is showing how strategic thinkers approach Latin America and the differing strategic approaches they use to win in one of the world's most important and fastest growning makets. Not just a good read, but informative to anyone wanting to do business in Latin America. Highly recommended.

"Buffalo Soldier" faces Comanche on Texas Frontier
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1996-12-02

Lose yourself and confront the problems of the early Texas frontier in Kelton's most thoughtful novel. Gideon, a former slave, flees the post-Civil-War south and finds himself in the Cavalry at the West Texas outpost of Fort Concho where he faces himself, white prejudice, and the fierce Comanche.
Many blacks served as enlisted cavalrymen on frontier posts in Texas. Because of the African American dark skin and hairtype, the Comanches gave them the name "Buffalo Soldiers." The name was a term of respect and awe, for the Comanche revered the buffalo and depended on it for survival.
Though highly entertaining adventure, "Wolf" retains historical and geographical accuracy, and Kelton attains a sensitive characterization that makes the story both touching and satisfying.

Wonderful Novel About West Texas and It's History

This book ranks among my top five personal favorite novels of all time. Mr. Kelton weaves a tapestry of West Texas culture and history and storytelling that will envelop a reader. The story of two men, Gideon Ledbetter, a former slave who becomes a US Cavalry soldier (or Buffalo soldier, as they were historically known), and Gray Horse Running, an American Indian fighting for his way of life, is an absolute must-read. His description of weary solidiers travelling through the West Texas desert will have you reaching for a glass of water!! I first read this book as a college assignment and have happily recommended it to friends and family for years. I consider it to be Mr. Kelton's masterpiece, even better than "The Good Old Boys" or "The Time It Never Rained" which are also outstanding. Some smart person is going to make a great movie out of this book one day.

Luther Butler THE WOLF AND THE BUFFALO BY ELMER KELTON Elmer Kelton skillfully takes the rugged geography of West Texas, accounts of the Texas Comanche wars, mixes in the Buffalo soldiers with their hair the Indians thought looked like the curly buffalo, and adds white officers, Comanches, buffalo hunters, and makes an epic struggle of two cultures that will be enjoyed by many generations of readers. And to add spice to the story, he stirs in the women of San Angelo, Texas who washes not only clothes but who provide sexual relief for the men who chase dusty savages into a world unknown to them. The story centers around two strong characters. The Buffalo is Private Gideon Ledbetter, a recently released Louisiana slave who is now a member of the Tenth U.S. Calvary stationed at Fort Concho, Texas. Hated by most of the white settlers, Ledbetter has two jobs. When he is not chasing Comanches, he spends his time building adobe buildings and shoveling horse manure at the fort, but. he prefers to be on patrol trying to make the savage Comanches go to a reservation in Oklahoma Territory. He goes out with Lieutenant Hollander under Black Sergeant Nettles. Ledbetter grows stronger in his position until he eventually takes over Nettles job. The wolf is Gray Horse, a young Comanche warrior who tries to keep the invading settlers after the Civil War from killing his people's source of food, the buffalo. In constant visions, the wolf and the raven seek to lead the developing warrior to new buffalo herds. Symbolically, Gray Horse sees visions of a red buffalo calf. Unlike Ledbetter, Gray Horse declines in prestige until he is forced to make a suicidal attack before his people go into servitude on the Oklahoma reservation. Ledbetter almost loses his focus because of the beautiful mulatto, Hannah York, who gives a purpose for him to not only live, but to advance so he can earn enough money to marry and start a family. The old woman who controls the desirable young maiden saves her charge so she can sell sexual favors to the white officers. After the young soldier has enjoyed Hannah's body numerous times, he finds her with his commanding officer, Lieutenant Hollander. Hannah is forced to leave. Sergeant Nettles saves Ledbetter's career by talking sense to the betrayed young man who planned to marry his beloved. Hollander's subsequent marriage to a proper young lady and his attempt to repair the damaged relation with Ledbetter forms a hinge that much of the latter action pivots on. Gray Horse leads Ledbetter's unit on a wild chase into a land where there is no water. The chief thinks he has destroyed the enemy only to find the new enemy is invincible Even after the white government turns white hunters loose to slaughter the buffalo for their hides, does Gray Horse fail to acknowledge that the only hope for his people lies in going to Oklahoma Reservation where the Quakers will rule them. At Adobe Walls, the Comanche leader begins to glimpse the truth when a few buffalo hunters with their rifles that can kill at over a mile, turns back a gathering of the Indian nation. General Mackenzie's rout of Comanches at their winter quarters in Palo Duro Canyon makes Gray Horse realize the end is near. Gray Horse goes to the hated reservation a wounded and beaten warrior to shed his buffalo robes and become a cattle raiser. He realizes he must make one last try to find the red buffalo calf after he finds his wife with their son who is dying because of poor living conditions. Taking a band of warriors, he goes in search of the mystical calf. After he and his men brutally slaughter a group of buffalo killers, Gray Horse realizes his dreams of being free are over. After finding the red buffalo calf, the warriors kill it and eat it! To him, a way of life ends. Out numbered by the buffalo soldiers who come to punish the Comanche band for slaughtering the buffalo hunters, Gray Horse makes a suicidal attack on Sergeant Ledbetter's unit. Even though the Indian's arrow goes through Ledbetter's shoulder, he is able to fire the final shot that brings an end to his enemy. Like the end of a Greek epic, the defeated Indian is carried off on a symbolic shield to be given a hero's funeral. Ledbetter recovers from his wound so he can fight a new enemy, the Apaches. And I hope he eventually finds Hannah, nurses her back to health, and goes into retirement to live on a small farm and raise a family. END

It includes consonant blends and diagraphs as well as more short vowel sorts. Job security, care taking, blind loyalty, independence, and autocracy are OUT. Adaptability, responsibility, reciprocal loyalty, interdependence, and conflict are IN. Simply put, Morris Shechtman gives us "a clue" on how to successfully "play" today's radically changed corporate game. Just the title, "Working Without a Net", gave me the jitters. As each chapter, from "An Alternative to Working and Living In a Fantasy World" to "Doing the Right Thing," unfolds, entrenched ideas of "how things work" in the workplace are shattered, first by a values clarification test, (oh, yes, most of us have some very interesting value conflicts when it comes to the old career), and then a series of growth and success strategies, powerful exercises, and the revelation that paradigm shifts are necessary to assist in our surviving and thriving in our new "net-less" environment.

The rationale for the paradigm shifts?: an ever-changing global economy that increases competition, decreases profits and margins, and heightens the emphasis on human resources as the key to gaining the competitive edge. Far from advocating a cold-hearted Darwinian approach to business, "Working Without A Net" celebrates the capacity of people within an organization to resolve their differences, pursue corporate goals, and successfully met the challenges of today's high-risk business world. - Ted DeCorte, M.A.

There are many survey-type histories of the Viking world, stuffed with pretty pictures. What distinguishes Hall's "World of the Vikings" from the rest is his inclusion of information about relatively new finds, and his ability (in light of his experience with the dig in York) to write about them clearly and concisely for a lay audience. A fine book for the person just learning about the Vikings, and still useful for more knowledgeable persons because of the updated archaeological information.

The World of the Vikings, Richard Hall, Thames&Hudson, is both a well researched work and one with "coffee table" appeal for its great illustrations. It is unusual to find this depth of scholarship combined with illustrations of this quality.

The author brings the Vikings to life again with clear descriptions of the evidence we have about them. You will conclude with the sense that you were there to see them, and you will have plenty of resources to further research any gaps you might feel.

I'm not an artist, I'm a historian, with a special interest in physical social and cultural history: Costume, domestic architecture, social mores, all that stuff. Photography is the obvious source for that, at least from the Civil War on, but an artist's interpretation can also be very useful. For those reasons, I learned early in my career to pay attention to the Realists, especially Bingham, Breton, Millet, Tissot, Eakins, Degas, Whistler, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and some of Monet and Manet. While studying that lot, I also developed a taste for the Pre-Raphaelites and the later artists of myth and dream, like Burne-Jones, Leighton, and Alma-Tadema, who don't get much attention these days. I lose interest when I get to the Post-Impressionists like Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Munch, however. (So sue me.) All of which is to say that the authors, both of whom are NYU professors in the fine arts, have done an excellent job of surveying the entire century in which all of the above had their careers. The discussions cover not only artistic influences but political and familial factors as well as relevant biographical details. There are more than 500 illustrations, though fewer than 90 are in color, and many of them are rather small -- which seems inadequate for a coffee-table-sized art book. And, frankly, I'm puzzled how any survey of the 19th century could completely ignore Frederick Remington and Charles Russell. Otherwise, it's an excellent book for slow perusal.

Nineteenth-century art has a wonderful depth to it, and this book has almost a hundred full-color pictures and some 400 in black and white. The quality of the book is fantastic. This is a must for anyone interested the 19th century painting.

I love pictures that tell a story. Look at the mystery and story on the cover of this book. It's full of other wonderful paintings ane well-worth the price.

If you like black-and-white engravings from the 19th century, get "A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought," by David Allen Williams. This book is full of rare 19th century engravings that match its quotations from the Humanist perspective--a beautiful art book that has been overlooked because of it's title.

Whether you're familiar with Dr. Janson's previous work or not, you'll immedately recognize the quality and value of this book. The information is very well organized, divided into four sections based on time periods. Each of those sections is divided by the type of art (paintings or sculptures). With more than 500 illustrations (89 in full color), the book is not only an excellent source of reference, but also just plain interesting reading. Many of the stories are fascinating, encouraging the reader to dig even deeper. The details are impressive, particularly with accurate journalism being a relatively recent concept. Obviously, the information could only have come from extremely knowledgeable sources. Excellent book for art lovers on any level!

Have you ever wondered what the "Titanic" may have looked like from within? Have you wondered what lay beyond the riveted steel plates of the "Ship of Dreams?" Perhaps you've wondered what it looked like as one dined in any of the three classes? If you've pondered any of these questions, then "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" is most definitely the book for you!

This two volume series covering the ship goes into ornate detail about every aspect of the ship. Volume one covers the construction of the "Titanic" and includes chapters that cover everything from the double-bottom to the funnels, masts, and riggings. Volume two covers the fitting out of the behemoth liner. One learns what they would have seen, had they been on the "Titanic's" doomed maiden voyage. If one purchased this encyclopedic volume, they learn how different classes' cabins looked and what might have been available for purchase in the ship's barber shops.

If you are a "Titanic" buff, if you are interested in cruise ships, or if you would just like to learn more about the great "Titanic," then "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" is definitely the book for you!

Belongs in every serious Titanic collectors library.

I have previously raved about Volume II in this series (which came out before Volume 1) and I will do so again here. This is meticulously researched and photo/illustration rich. This volume covers the building and hardware fitting out of the TItanic. Most of the illustrations come from her sister ship Olympic, but there are also many rare photos and illustrations here directly from the Titanic as well. From bulkheads to Marconi machinery, it is all here. Note that this does NOT include any of the "Titanic Story" -- this is pure, factual, blue-print type material about the ship itself, not it's sinking, its passengers, nor its crossing. I have been pouring over both of these volumes now for weeks, and just love them.

If, like me, you like to know every thing about the Titanic. If you are fascinated about this great ship, you have to own these two really magnificiant books. Many pictures, I hadn`t seen before.. Although I already have many books about that great ship, I have learned many new things about her. I do not regret that I add these two wonderful books to my Titanic books`collection and I recommand that you buy them if you are a truly fan of the Titanc ; More than ordinary books, these books are pieces of collection.

Prentice Hall MOUS Test Preparation Guide for Access 2000 and CD Package is a great book and a study guide. Despite a few flaws, I will still give it two thumbs up.

Absolutely the best choice

I spend alot of time sifting through preparation materials, and purchased this one based on the two other reviews. The preparation guide is extremely well written with tons of illustrations and the PinPoint software is fantastic. This was the only guide I used to prepare for the exam. How'd I do? Perfect 1000.

With NO prior Access experience, I completed the 26 questions on the MOUS test in about 30 minutes (out of the 45 minutes allowed).

You will pass the certification test easily after completing all of the material in this book and on the CD.

The material is well focused on just that information needed to answer the MOUS test questions correctly.

The only complaint I have is that the software on the CD would "flag" questions for review that were marked correct on the Test Report and it would not flag some questions for review that were marked as incorrect on the Test Report.

Note: I spent about 120 hours going through all the material twice (and experimenting with Access 2000 a little) before taking the test.

This is the MOUS Access 2000 book your need!

If your are pursuing the MOUS certification for Microsoft Access 2000, then this book is your best friend. The text is thorough and easy to follow. It concentrates on the test, so you won't be confused by peripheral discussions. But the real gem is the PinPoint CD that accompanies the book. The Access tasks are presented in the same manner as the test, with excellent walk-throughs for any tasks which you might find difficult. When you miss a task, the software keeps track so you can easily try it again. Using Susan L. Wise's MOUS Test Preparation Guide as my primary study tool, I pulled a perfect 100% on the Microsoft Access 2000 exam!
