Excellent Anthology of LiteratureReview Date: 2008-03-20
For a textbook it's a really good bookReview Date: 2008-01-22
It's also broken into sections like Fiction, Poems, which makes it easy to navigate through and the sections are further broken into chapters such as theme, setting, etc. with works that correspond, so you really get a good example of what each chapter is talking about.
One negative though would be the size, it's really big but with all that's included I guess it only makes sense that it would be that massive.
All in all it was a great purchase plus I think I bought it from someone on Amazon for a $1 (for a hardcover!) so it was also a good buy. My suggestion would be that more English professosrs should use it or for anyone who just wants to be informed literally, this is a really good book.
Pretty good text with online adjunct videos for freeReview Date: 2005-10-30
There is an adjunct video course also usually taught in conjunction with this text, and its available for free on demand online at learner dot org.
I've kept this text for the many stories and usefull English info. Worth having.

There is no better teaching book, anywhere.Review Date: 2000-12-29
I read this book in high school in 1982; it taught me enough that five years later I aced a four-credit independent study class in Lisp (at an Ivy League college) without any further reading. Hey, I *told* him I already knew Lisp! Dr. Friedman, I hope you come across this endorsement some day; please accept my thanks for creating this wonderful little gem. (Pass the pizza, please, I have a little more to write...)
I cannot endorse this book highly enough. If you want to learn Lisp, I know of no better place to go.
It's a five-star book, but...Review Date: 2001-12-23

The best first book on programming in any language.Review Date: 1999-10-29
The greatest strength of LISP is its firm base in the essentials of the mathematics of computability, including Goedel's recursive functions and Church's Lambda calculus. It uses a single data structure, the linked list, and a minimum of programming primitives, all with well-known mathematical properties. For those who don't know the mathematics, this base in simple concepts means that LISP is one of the easiest programming languages to understand, and at the same time one of the most powerful.
The greatest strength of Little LISPer is its easy and natural sequence of steps for introducing data types and structures (numeric, text, and Boolean atoms organized in lists and trees) along with the recursive programming structures that are natural for creating and processing them.
I have just ordered the third edition for my son who is learning programming (if he can get it away from me).

This book has it all -- adventure, romance, mystery!Review Date: 2005-03-10
The heroine is raised by relatives in Jamaica, who arrange her marriage with an abusive man (no, they don't know he's unnatural, and there are no graphic details of the abuse). In one night of terror, her husband is killed and she escapes with a close friend (sort of an adopted father) on his boat. They live (platonically) on the boat sailing from port to port trading goods and living happily until they are shipwrecked and she saves the life of a sick man they had been taking to an island (sorry, for more exciting details you have to read the book, and it is verrrry exciting, and this is only a third of the way through :o). Her adopted father dies in the shipwreck, but the sick man gets well and takes her back to England, where she lives happily until a dark secret from the past rears its ugly head and sends her back to Jamaica in search of (to find out read the book!).
I read the book in Czech so I can say nothing about the writing style in English, but I admired the heroine, I loved the hero, and the story kept me glued till the last pages with its intricate twists, multiple plot lines and gripping narrative...

Black and White Knitting Machine ManualReview Date: 2006-01-08
Close to 90 percent of this book is identical to the manuals that come with the machines - very basic. The DVD does show the casting on, knitting, intarsia, transfering stitches and binding off taking place, but no sound.? I finally got to see a linker in action. There is a chapter on blocking and assembling a sweater. The final chapter has a couple projects . . . a scarf, hat, sweater and slippers. I actually made 2 sets of slippers - which uses the 'short-rowing' technique.
Not a very creative book, I was expecting to learn to do some fancy stitches on my machine. But, if you've lost your manual(s), this is your book.

Great Little Book!Review Date: 2008-01-01
Okay, then it goes into techniques in different stitches, fixing jams, using a punchcard feature on machines with punchcards, different hems, ribbing, different edgings (scalloped edge, rolled edge, twisted cord edge and more). Some other things included encasing a clsed edge band, incasing a cut edge band, welt pocket, finishing techniques. It shows how a linker works (not one on the machine, a seperate one) and then goes into projects. On top of all this there is a included DVD showing this information. Not everything is on DVD, but alot. There is lots of pictures. I really recommend this book.

A very helpful grammarReview Date: 2007-12-28
So, for instance, this volume outlines the various uses of the Greek present tense. The regular uses are the progressive present, the customary present, and the iterative present. The book then presents "special uses" of the present tense, namely, the aoristic present, the futuristic present, the historical present, and the tendential present.
The book explains in detail how each of these uses function. Such information is imperative to understand when translating the New Testament. In fact, I relied heavily on this volume when I was working on my Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition (ALT).
I followed many of this book's suggestions in my translation work, so the information in this book helped me to bring out finer details of the Greek text that are often missed in Bible translations. So, for instance, this book states, "A prohibition in the present imperative demands that action then in progress be stopped.... Thus a prohibition expressed with the present tense demands the cessation of some act that is already in progress" (pp. 301).
Utilizing this information, I consistently translated the prohibitive, present imperative using the form "Stop ..." (e.g., Matt 6:16, "And when you* are fasting, stop becoming gloomy like the hypocrites").
However, there is so much information in this book that sometimes it can be difficult to keep it all straight. So when I began working on the ALT, I typed out initially just for myself, a summary of the various grammatical points and suggested renderings given in this book and various other Greek grammars. That summary proved invaluable as I worked on the ALT, so later I expanded it and included it as an extensive "Grammatical Renderings " section in my book Companion Volume to the Analytical-Literal Translation: Third Edition.
So yes, get this volume if you want to understand the various uses of Greek grammatical forms. But to help keep it all straight, check out my "Companion Volume" as well. And to see how Dana and Mantey's suggestions look in an actual translation, see my ALT.
A Truly Indispensable HandbookReview Date: 2005-10-11
At the beginning of each section, this book provides references to the larger works by Robertson and Moulton. Although not necessary, it is very beneficial to read those references as directed, especially those in Robertson. This book is supposed to come with a chart of verb conjugations in the back, but if it is missing (as it was in mine), there is an identical chart in the back of Essentials of New Testament Greek by Ray Summers.
In my opinion, this grammar should be the standard for any student of the New Testament; it really is that good. It is regrettably hard to find; however, and along those lines also expensive. Give this grammar a chance, it will soon become your favorite.

Best Distribution channels book aroundReview Date: 2006-07-05
Great update for a seminal book (REVIEW UPDATE: March 23, 2006)Review Date: 2001-03-28
Like the sixth edition, the seventh edition is organized around a comprehensive framework for channel strategy. Each chapter walks through a different element of the framework. This approach integrates a wide range of material while making it easy to sample just the strategic topics that are relevant to your business.
The seventh edition continues the evolution of the book toward an approach well-grounded in the real-world economics of channels. Much of the content has been carried over from the sixth edition, although the book's structure is more streamlined. A lot of superfluous and outdated material from earlier editions has finally been cleaned up.
The chapter on vertical integration has been rightly moved into the "Channel Implementation" section. This is an outstanding chapter that provides a truly unique synthesis of marketing strategy and economic reasoning.
I have only two minor quibbles. One, the book is beginning to lag behind actual management practice. For instance, the discussion of margin vs. fee payments, new to the seventh edition, receives a scant four paragraphs. Two, the chapters on channel institutions (Retailing, Wholesaling, and Logistics) should either be expanded or more closely integrated with examples in the text. In addition, the data presented in these chapters are often out-of-date, in some cases by more than ten years.
As both a channel strategy consultant and one of Erin's former students, I can personally vouch for the validity of their insights into channel strategy. You will not be disappointed by the quality and rigor of thinking in this book.
Outstanding book on marketing channel behavior.Review Date: 1999-02-27
This is the 5th edition of the original book that developed the theories that explain the structure and behavior of marketing channels. There is still nothing better. For those who understand the significance of channels, it provides a clear roadmap for the analysis of changes. For those who do not, it will explain channel member behavior and illuminate recent successes due to channel management (Walmart, Dell Computer), so that you can understand how the lessons can be applied to your business.
I recommend this book to all business managers, not just to read once, but to keep in your office and refer to often through the years in order to navigate the high seas of channel change.
every CEO should read this bookReview Date: 2006-02-08
For me, this is the definitive text in the emerging discipline of routes to market and is of tremendous value to channels managers, marketing managers and anyone responsible for their organisation's routes to market.
In fact, never mind the marketeers, every CEO should be required to read it.
