This is the only guide you will ever need to understanding how to put a business plan together and in so doing you gain invaluable lessons on what makes business tick, from a master. I have used this book in an earlier edition, as a blueprint to attract finance for 3 ventures so I can vouch for its easy style and elegant solutions. Highly recommended whether you're starting, running or turning around a business. If you are in business you need to read this book from cover to cover and you don't need to be Einstein to understand it.

An excellent book that takes you through start to finish on the operating principles of a business and the reasons behind each process. This provides a good framework for you to fashion what is appropriate for your business given the circumstances you are in at this point in time. The book is logically laid out, explained in simple language and very easy to apply in a practical business environment. This is the best book I have read on establishing a business plan that can either be highly operational, tactical or strategic in nature or have these elements combined in a manner that meets your current needs.

I find this book way superior to many other books on the subject. At the same time, it approaches business plans with small boxed anecdotes and an easy-going attitude (alla "...for dummies" but a far better level). Also differences between British and U.S. accounting terms are explained, giving the book a touch of international reach. At all times you have the feeling of being in company with a very talented and experienced author.

Absolutely Brilliant

Written for serious professionals, and assumes a modicum of intelligence, out of all the books claiming to assist in designing a business plan, this is the only one that actually comes close to anything serious. Have a look at the sample pages to see what I mean.

Well-written book - good balance of theory and practice

This book does justice to the many issues facing any corporation today when designing their software. It has a balanced blend of theory and practice. While it can be used very easily in a college classroom, it is also well-suited for a more practitioner oriented audience. Practicing managers will find the chapters and corresponding steps very useful as they try to design and implement higher quality software.

My favorite chapter was chapter 5. This chapter presents a very clear list of steps that need to be addressed when designing trustworthy software. The authors do a great job integrating the various literatures on management of change. The implementation steps would probably apply to many more change issues in organizations - showing the versatile nature of the book.

Great text!

Design for Trustworthy Software is an excellent book for developing robust software designs. The book explains very well the principles and methodologies that can help in developing of software with emphasis on prevention rather than corrective action.Professionals have been looking for a good book which can describe and help them in the reliability side of the software. This book just does that.

I particularly like Part II-Tools and Techniques of Design for Trustworthy Software. Although these tools and techniques are well known

and applied for a long time on the hardware side, their application for software is very well rxplained here. The book is excellently organized for students and beginning practitioners. In each chapter key points are are braught out at the end to confirm the understanding and then the exercises and questions challenge that understanding.

The authors have demonstrated their knowledge of wide array of concepts and principles. At the same time, their keen grasp of those concepts and princples is clearly evident.

I will strongly recommend this book for the students of the subject as well as professionals who are working to achieve robust software designs.

College-level students of quality assurance will welcome this integrated approach to software quality issues, which tells how to prevent bugs in implementation rather than discovering them after. Case examples of DFTS technology include FMEA, QFD and more, and provide a blend of theory, applications, and exercises designed to test student knowledge. Classrooms in particular will find it excellent. Its authors are a CEO of a quality assurance company and a chairman of a consulting group, and professor.

A complete treatment for designing large software systems
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-28
This thoroughly researched book begins with an excellent summary of the state of software development methodologies. It provides a useful description of the important strategies, life-cycle models, and process improvement methodologies. The theme of the book comes from applying Taguchi Methods to software development. This approach to trustworthy software shifts effort "upstream" from testing to design: Build software right in the first place rather than waiting for a huge quality assurance department (or worse yet, customers) to find the bugs for you. Several chapters provide detail on how to apply these principles to large scale software systems.

The authors have pulled together material from an impressive set of resources into one, admittedly lengthy, book. The shear number of methodologies (including corresponding acronyms!) contained in this volume is staggering. The chapter endnotes document these sources and web references give many pointers for additional information. They also include several case studies written by practioners who have used the methodologies described in the book.

Brilliant book on software design

This is an excellent book providing exposure to a new technology in software design. Design For Trustworthy Software is well written. The quality initiative ideas are quite innovative.
I like the fact that the book's focus is on building quality into the product at the early design phases. Bugs found further downstream in the development process get more and more expensive to fix.
The exercises at each chapter's end are well presented to allow for better understanding of the material.
This is a great resource for both students and software professionals for producing high quality software.

Well-balanced, and easy to follow, this book is very well-written.

Based on years of real-world projects, it strikes a balance between no documentation and a bureaucratic paper trail. It introduces the concept of a workbook which groups documentation under the following headings: Requirements, Project Management, Analysis, User Interface Model, Design, Implementation, Testing and Appendix, with detailed traceability information. The section dedicated to User Interface Model is a welcome change, acknowledging what so many have concluded: that UI design is a formal part of the design process, seperate from system architecture design. It's a light on exactly how to evaluate interfaces effectiveness, for this I refer you to usability guru Jacob Nielsen's book "Usability Engineering" also available at Amazon I'm sure.

Notation draws from Booch and Rumbaugh. Lots of worked examples makes the first project using this book a pleasure, and following projects even easier. Thoroughly recommended.

The project management process described in this book iscentered around defining and producing a set of deliverables (WorkProducts) and has the following characteristics: ยท Focuses on Work Products organized into a logical repository known as a Work Book. Each Work Product is concisely defined in the text as to its content, structure, purpose, value and traceability (relationship to other Work Products). The list of Work Products is adaptable according to project needs and extensible in terms of defining additional WPs. The authors define WPs in terms of Objects in the Policy Management domain and present a class-definition style view of their properties and relationships. END

I found this book to be very thorough and well-written. It strongly emphasizes a separation between analysis and design, and describes every possible work product I can think of in an OO project. One small criticism is that the coverage of Use-cases is fairly weak (Scenarios should probably be requirements work products rather than analysis).

A Consequence-Centered (Not Punishment-Centered) Approach to Handing Student Misbehavior
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-23
I once attended a seminar by author Richard Curwin and found him to be an affable fellow with good insights to classroom management. This book contains many practical tips in this regard (review based on the 1989 edition). Curwin believes that classroom discipline is a social contract that should jointly be planned by teacher and students. This includes small details. For instance, teacher and students should come up with a consequence for dealing with an infraction in which the teacher doesn't know who did it, but not one that stigmatizes the entire class.

Curwin notes that the student population breaks down 80%/15%/5% in terms of near-complete compliance, varied compliance, and chronic non-compliance to rules. He summarizes the challenge facing teachers: "In many junior and senior high classes, 5 to 10 minutes of class time is wasted at the beginning of class trying to focus the attention of students. At least another 5 to 10 minutes is directed toward off-task behavior (students not paying attention, using put downs, arguing) during class time. This amounts to minimally 10 to 20 minutes of a 45- to 50-minute class period doing things other than what you are paid to do and want to do: teach!" (p. 53).

Punishment is centered on retribution, and can violate the dignity of the child. Consequences, in contrast, are corrective. The distinction between the two is not simply semantic. Let's illustrate. A child who didn't bring in homework can be punished by writing 100 times "I will do my homework". How much better to have the child have the consequence of writing out a plan for budgeting his/her time so that the homework gets done? For hitting another person, the child may be punished by having to stay after school. The offender should instead have the consequence of coming after school and writing out a plan for expressing his/her anger at others without hitting.

Lee Canter believes that the identical set of consequences should be imposed on anyone who violates a classroom rule. Curwin, in contrast, believes that the teacher should enjoy the flexibility of different consequences for the same infraction. This allows the teacher to avoid choosing between appearing to be rigid and being inconsistent. For instance, if a child didn't do homework owing to a home emergency, he/she can face the consequence of a parent-teacher conference. If he/she didn't do homework for any excusable reason, he/she can face the consequence of coming after school.

Power struggles can be avoided by not "taking the hook". If a child says: "You can't make me!", the teacher should ignore it, but then privately tell the child that he/she is expected to follow through.

Curwin includes many unconventional ideas for solving discipline problems. For instance, a teacher had a chronic problem with students throwing paper airplanes. She came up with the idea of a bloc of classroom time when students would build paper airplanes and launch them--provided that not a single paper airplane was made in the interim. It worked!

It gives you ways to deal with negative situtations that allows the child to walk away feeling like they can be a better person and they will be!

I enjoyed The divorce Express very much. When Phoebe's parents got divorced, she was forced to ride a bus which was nick-named the Divorce Express because of all of the children riding to and from their seperated parent's homes. On the bus, Phoebe met a girl named Rosie Wison. The two girls became good friends not only on the Divorce Express, but in school also. After living with her mother, Phoebe moved in with her father, Jim. Jim lived in Woodstock and Phoebe didn't like the idea of moving in with him. Yet after a while of getting used to it, she didn't seem to mind it one bit. She participated when her school decided to take action when they could no longer stand the lunches they were being served in the cafeteria, she made a lot of frineds, and really began to fit in. Rosie helped a lot. Phoebe was also very fond of Rosie's mother Mindy. Jim and Mindy had met several times and also got along very well. Then, just when everything was in her life was going just right, Phoebe's mother announced thar she was going to get married to a man that Phoebe didn't like at all. I have to stop here and not give away the ending. The divorce Express was a very good book. It only took me a week to read it and i just couldn't put it down. I hope you will enjoy this book just as much as I did.

This title may seem a little weird for you but I'm going to explain why it's called Divorce-Express-Reading Marathon... Well, when I started reading this book I thought it would be kind of boring, but when I read about Phoebe's story I couldn't stop reading! Instead of taking a week to read this book I took 2 to 3 days, and I was traveling! Imagine if I wasn't... Well, there are a few reasons that made me love this book so much. First of all, I loved the story. It is about a girl named Phoebe that has divorced parents and lives with her father in Woodstock while her mother lives in New York. She makes lots of new friends in Woodstock, and together they organize a protest to improve the cafeteria food of their school. She also has to confront lots of problems during the story, including her mother getting married to another guy... Well, I think I already told too much of the story, and to know the rest you'll just have to read this awesome book!! Enjoy!

The book I read was called The Divorce Express. It's about a girl name Pheobe whose parents didn't start getting along until they got a divorce when she was thirteen. Now that she's fourteen she spends the weekend with her father in woodstock New York ,and commutes on the bus called the ''Divorce Express'' for weekends with her mother in New York city.

It seems to me that joint custody means alot to Phoebe, because her parents are not together. Phoebe hates the fact that she has to deal with all the crisesin both of her parents lives. Phoebe's life improves when she meet a girl name Rosie who becomes her friend. Phoebe meets Rosie in Woodstock where her dad lives. Also her life changes when a boy named Dave that she had a crush on for years while going to visit her dad ask to date her. Just when phoebe thinks she got everything under control ,her mother announces that she's getting married.

Yes, I would recommand this book to other readers, because it's helping others who want to learn about marriage in the future.

To a scientist, the words "fields and energy" almost always imply one key concept: conservation as in a conservative field. Newtonian gravity is a great example of a field that is conservative towards energy. As far as I can tell this concept was ever employed in any of its fifteen chapters, let alone developed. Thus, the book's title as a topic under scientific discussion is really not the point, which is awestriking to me.

At any rate, I still "love" the book in the amazonian sense of stars because it has really been of help to me in visualizing electricity as Electric and Magnetic vectors and fields. Figure 3.5.1 on page 81 and its explanation is a must read for any Electrical Engineer who might find themselves in a similar myopic situation. (The electronic version of Figure 3.5.1 should be in the 3rd pdf file.).

It is hard to understand why this book is out of print.
The authors are deceased as far as I have checked.
It is extremely well organized and written, logically presented,
full of illustrations, examples, figures and exercises.
The text covers electromagnetism at a graduate level,
but it is so clearly written that you will be able to gain
lots of insights even if you have studied only the basics.
Some typos are present in the text but they are easy to
identify and correct. I personally enjoy a lot this book
and recommend it thoroughly. It deserves to be reprinted
as a revised version.

This is a classic on Mexican cooking, with first and second printings in 1958. Recipes and instructions are succinct, and there is little or no commentary on the dishes or their background.

I give this 4 stars, as Diana Kennedy's "The Cuisines of Mexico", published in 1972, has become a more definitive source of Mexican recipes. Kennnedy's book also has simple recipes, and also has superb hints on cooking, and gives a wonderful running commentary on the origin of the dishes, and suggestions on how to serve the dish. Kennedy's also has photographs.

Newer books by Bayless and others have come forth since 1972, however both Zelayeta's and Kennedy's books have stood the test of time.

As a mother of 6 children, I bought a copy of this book 17 years ago, when my first child was a baby. Since I own a bookstore, I have access to quite a slew of books, and own several hundred health-related books for children - from herbal to homeopathic to allopathic medicine. This is by far the best - the one I turn to every time - and it always has the answer I'm looking for. Symptoms for illnesses & diseases that I've never heard of, and the most complete. I have been able to diagnose cases of scarlet fever in my children (confirmed by my unbelieving doctor), and other "odd" illnesses often left diagnosed. My doctors are always amazed that I know so much, and have even asked if I went to medical school. But no, I simply have this wonderful resource in my home library, and have read it often! I am here now, looking for a hardcover edition, since my 17 year old paperback is falling apart (literally)! I would recommend this book to every parent!

A great reference book for anyone raising kids!

A friend gave me this book when my first son was born. It has been through nineteen years and two children and has helped me evaluate various symptoms that resulted in everything from thrush to pityriasis rosea. Dr. Smith's book was also a great comfort in the middle of the night when one of my children would wake with symptoms I wasn't familiar with! This would make a GREAT gift for any soon-to-be mother. Any chance of talking the publisher into returning it to print?

The child I raised using this book is now expecting. I'd love to find an updated version of this book to give her. It was invaluable in saving unnecessary trips to the Dr. It is straight forward, easy to understand and has great symptom flow charts to follow to determime what's ailing your child. Worth its price in the peace of mind it can give. My only concern is that since it's so old, I'm not sure if any information in it may be considered incorrect today.(i.e. babies are now put to sleep on their backs/sides rather than their stomachs to prevent SIDS) Even so, it's worth having as a resource in your library.

Helps you make sure your doctor diagnosed properly

I find this book to be invaluable. I was given a copy by a friend after my child recovered from meningitis. This book would have led me to this illness very quickly; however, the doctors took three critical days to figure it out on their own. Since then I have been able to do my own research on my children's ailments to verify/refute the doctor's diagnosis. Obviously this is not a book to take the place of a doctor, but it can help you prepare your questions for the doctor. If I had said "could my child have meningitis . . ." the doctor would have reviewed the symptoms and possibly diagnosed properly this relatively uncommon disease at the time (it's more commonly known now) before permanent damage had been done. I was hoping to get an updated copy of this book to include the most current medical information - anyone have a recommendation?
