This book was required for a college course I took and the book really helped me to jump into the shoes of a person with anorexia nervosa. I highly recommend this book to a person with or without the disorder.

I've read 3 other books on this topic and found this to be the easiest to read and very inspirational. Short chapters, pick-up and read as much or as little in one sitting. Practical, real life examples of dealing with the complexities of an eating disorder. Not sugar coated, yet it does not dwell in the depths of dispair. Encouraging, hopeful, realistic. I consider this a must read for anyone dealing with an eating disorder, their friends, and family included. I am a mom to a recovering daughter.

This book is not only a wonderful resource for sufferers of anorexia. But it is also a resource for thier family and friends. The book explains anorexia, tells Monika Ostroff's personal story, and has a special chapter for family and loved ones. Everyone who suffers from anorexia or has a spouse, family member, or friend with anorexia, should read this book.

I have had anorexia for 11 years. I am now 24 and am in treatment. Hall and Ostroff's book helped me to understand that I was not alone, and that I was in charge. Most importantly, and the most difficult issue to deal with is that anorexia teaches you things about yourself. I strongly recommend this book to someone who does not know where to start. No, once you read it, you will not be cured but at least you will have explored what you are most afraid of--letting go of the control and the selfdestructive coping strategies. I read the book within the first week of group therapy and came the next week with photocopies of certain sections that were very helpful for the rest of the members. This book helps you want to get rid of the anorexic thoughts. You will be much happier while on the road of recovery. Letting go of the obsessive thoughts that come with anorexia was the best thing I have ever done.

Reading this book evokes the feeling of talking to a concerned and supportive friend about anorexia. The authors don't throw out harsh statistics or Freudian theories, and there are no disturbingly graphic depictions of binging or purging. Instead, the reader is treated with affection and respect. It is assumed that anorexia develops as a method of coping, and the reader receives suggestions for new ways to deal with feelings. This book gives the reader a feeling of hope and self-reliance, and avoids shaming language. The authors give helpful, practical methods of overcoming anorexia and learning to love oneself.

I had purchesed the 2002 seris for work and found the books to be the best step-by-step text on AutoCAD had had found to date. When my company updated to 2004, I checked to see if Mr. Metz had writen a new seris for the latest version. I was elated when I saw that he had. This new seris is as easy to use as the original.

These books are the most user friendly I have ever used. Weather you are a novice or seasoned AutoCAD user, these books should be on your shelf at work or home.

If there could be a higher rating then 5 stars, this AutoCAD seris would get my vote.

I've used the previous edition and am now using the new edition of these books for my high school technology classes and really like them. In place of lectures, I let the students work through the books at their own pace. These books are so well written with easy to follow instructions that my students learn the AutoCAD program very quickly. The best part is that after the students have completed the exercises in the books, I can assign them any drawing and they can do it.

I really recommend these books to any instructor who teaches an introductory course in AutoCAD or for any individual who wants to learn AutoCAD on their own.

Touch therapy is the oldest and finest modality of healing on this planet. It treats the cause of an illness. This is one book that should remain on the market especially now with Reiki and Touch Therapy being used by more and more professionals, even in hospital settings. Patients should have the opportunity to understand that there is real hope, not traditional hopelessness. I am thankful that Ruth Montgomery wrote Born to Heal. I have been using this approach for 25 years and I have seen what it can do.

Previous reviewers have emphasized Mr. A's actual healing, a great thing, indeed. I was rather intrigued by his life philosophy, given at the end of the book.

For example: "The highest universal wealth is to be contented and to be at peace within yourself."

"...the more wisdom one has, the easier life is, because what people understand they do not fear."

"Wisdom can be dampened and distorted by education."

Tell me about it. I have a doctorate in psychology from a recognized graduate school, but wisdom? Well, I was wise enough to read this book, I guess that's something.

Mr. A tells the author, "We must reach for the higher and give to the lower, according to our level of wisdom...If everyone were doing this, people wouldn't be impairing their health by trying to outmaneuver each other on the present monetary basis...this would keep the human cycle closer to the natural cycles of the universe."

Wow! Have you ever heard anything so full of truth?

You could meditate on this your entire life, better yet act on it. I could, too.

Thank you Mr. A and thank you Ms. Montgomery for helping me in this way.

Diximus.

This is by far, my most favorite book written in the genre of erotica, specifically in BDSM. Denise Hall delivers and intimate portrayal of the rituals and emotions associated with BDSM. The reader is taken into the mind of the disciplined, learning what drives her to yearn for punishment and harsh "love".

This is a rare bit of erotica! Very difficult to find a book that you are rooting for both the feisty heroine, as well as the men that obviously adore her. As strict as the men can be, there is no nastiness to their discipline. The dialog is witty and the action scenes are handled with real finesse and originality.

If you like your BDSM with a touch of humor and tenderness along with the sizzle, this book is for you.

This is a book any spanking/paddling fan will love. It has the school scenes, the in the barn spanking, the jealous lover who really lays into the heroine, and even old men listening to the heroine getting her licks while she's in the back seat of a car, which truly embarrases her. I just wish I could work at such a house since all the workers have the right to punish the students. If you love spanking, you'll love "A Brief Education". Also try "Presented in Leather", "Our Scene" and "The Nothing Things" all available with Amazon.

At the risk of being repetitive, I have to say this indeed is my favorite as well. Our heroine Toby advertises for discipline, and gets it ... not just from the responder to her ad, but from the chauffeur, the cook, the gardener, the valet, and ... unforgettably ... from the butler. The initiation of Toby at the train station is quite memorable! The punishments are not wimpy but neither are they degrading. The result is a wonderful erotic mix that had me reading and re-reading chapters. In fact, there was nothing in the book which I skipped over. A definite must-read for the advocate of good old-fashioned M/f discipline.

Futures As The Future of Financial Markets
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-22
As the cover of this book says: Liquidity! Accessibility! Transparency!

The authors take a European perspective to challenge the traditional way that financial markets have operated in the United States and elsewhere. They point out, correctly I think, that the revolution is here. Fully automated markets now do the bulk of the worldwide futures trading. For example the Chicago Board of Trade was overtaken in futures volume by the fully automated German-Swiss EUREX in Frankfurt in 1998. London was charging from behind to take a big piece of the automated futures business as well. Automated trading experiments are going on in a number of other places, as well.

The vision the authors have is captured by a quote from Ludwig von Mises: "Economic history is the story of the gradual extension of the economic community beyond its original limits of the single household to embrace the nation and the world."

This vision is essentially of convergence into one global market, with one clearinghouse, and one regulator to do everything. The need to get costs down will require that convergence as the ultimate solution. How imminent this vision is has to be a guess (the authors convey the vision in the form of a dream), but the stories in the book show how often the complacent, traditional view has been wrong. The authors are good at pointing out the speed bumps that will delay progress, and outline good ideas for better and faster implementation.

But they are definitely tolling the bell in the near future for face-to-face selling. "In the future there will only be electronic traders." They also see a rise of small traders, small banks (doing direct placements of IPOs over the Internet with traders without underwriting syndicates), and greatly squeezed paychecks for traditional investment banking and trading activities.

I found the book to be consistent with my own vision. I was still left with the question of why the transition has not been a faster one. Financial markets should be converging at a much faster rate, if one looks only at the technology and the use of the Internet. Which aspects of human stalls are the worst delayers? Probably the tradition and bureaucratic stalls, because the existing markets and regulators are very slow to see new opportunity. Consider how recently fixed trading commissions disappeared. Those should have been gone in the Roaring Twenties.

If you want good detailed information on the state of the electronic market revolution, this book is essential reading. If you own a seat on an exchange, your pocketbook requires immediate attention.

There is an excellent section on how to prepare for the transition, and another one on the dangers to be cautious of.

Good look in building your wealth faster through more efficient markets!

In reading the book, there are many things that would scare traditionalists in our business. The rules are changing, and unless we adapt as traders and exchanges, we will be doomed. As I have discussions with other board members, and other floor traders, some intuitively understand the coming electronic age. Others pass it off as a purely European phenomena. "It won't happpen here.", is a phrase I hear every day. Brokers and traders see that the computerized competitors are having a tough time gaining a foothold in the American futures market. They rest thinking that their future is secure, and that maybe their margins will be squeezed a little. The revolution has only begun. While some of the positions the book posits seem outlandish, Columbus was seen as outlandish in 1492 too. This is a must read for any person associated with floor trading or an exchange. This also makes good reading for anyone involved in government regulation. Barriers are being broken down. Borders set by politics are not relevant to the sea change taking place in the financial marketplace. The U.S. is the titan of investment capital today, but a government that shackles the growth of the marketplace due to over regulation, is doomed to see all that capital leave for less regulated environs. I am on the Board of Directors at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, so I speak from experience. The revolution has begun, and we are trying to embrace it.

Building on the monthly news and insight from Patrick Young's ADTrading.com newsletter, Patrick Young and Thomas Theys have put together a concise history of recent developments in capital markets, especially the futures markets, and the steady advance of electronic trading. As a longtime reader of the newsletter I have been exposed to most of these ideas on a monthly basis; as an industry executive I have watched the events unfold day by day. Nevertheless, this compilation provides fresh insight into Capital Markets trends.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in an overview of the recent history of the futures, equity and FX markets and a plausible view where the markets are heading.

I would also recommend Capital Markets Revolution to industry insiders who are well aware of the events and ideas discussed, as they can benefit from the framework and view of the future into which current events are placed.

This book is a must-have for all serious decision trees researchers. It explains the underlying algorithms of classification and regression trees methods in details. It's not for beginners though. It's a bit outdated by now as trees methodology has advanced much with the invention of boosting, bagging, and arcing.

This is the original textbook written by the pioneers of the Classification And Regression Trees algorithm, which has now been cited in over 2200 academic journals. While some of the material can be fairly complex, the authors take great pains to make the material accessible. Many examples are given, and the algorithm and process are broken down into discrete pieces. It is the single best resource I have encountered on the topic.

NOTE: One odd aspect of the text is that there has been absolutely ZERO effort has been expended on either graphic design or typesetting. Instead, it looks like a high school student typed it out late one night. If such details are important to you, you should skip this one.

the book that made tree classification algorithms work better through the concept of pruning

Review Date: 2008-01-24
In 1984 Brieman, Olshen, Friedman and Stone published this book and produced a software product called CART that made tree classification popular. These algorithms were very useful in medical applications and the book illustrated some simple success stories particularly ones from Richard Olshen's experience working in the Medical School at UC San Diego.

Olshen and Gordon did some of the work on the asymptotic theory of recursive partitioning that made the methodology credible to the statistical research community. The methods began to be applied to pattern recognition problems and also to the development of expert systems. Today data miners use these tools.

These ideas goes back a lot further than these authors. However, previous attempts at recursive partitioning algorithms tended to grow trees with too many terminal nodes. These authors introduced two important ideas. One was to grow the trees overly long and then prune them back. The second was to continually use cross-validation to evaluate the trees.

This book is still very valuable 24 years after it was first published. It is also readible by general audiences for the most part. It now stands as a classic text on the subject of classification and regression trees. There are also books that followed in its footsteps and other places where tree structure comes into play.

Ken Perlman's book has been around for almost 30 years and, with the sentimental exception of Pete Seeger's "How to Play the 5 String Banjo", is clearly the leading "how to" book on this unique style of play. However comprehensive and well written a book is if you don't get the earliest lesson down pat you're gonna be dead meat when things speed up down the road. If you don't have a competent teacher and are trying to learn from any book alone clawhammer, more than any other picking style, will beat you into the ground.

Fortunately for those of us too cheap to hire an instructor Perlman has produced a 2 DVD (originally VHS) set that bests most teachers for clarity and continuity in following the text of this excellent book. I can't recommend highly enough just how effective the book and DVD combination is. You'll save years of struggle and have a great time learning this most fascinating style of play. A great book made much better with the available video.

Pete Seeger's famous little book got me started frailing and picking, but it was this book that really taught me how to play clawhammer. I can't recommend it highly enough. Besides teaching the basics, Perlman presents a full repetoir of well-known traditional songs- enough for a couple of sets. I can't recommend this book (and Perlman's other banjo books) highly enough.

I'm still working thru the book as we speak, but I feel like a I have a good grip on it. Ken starts off very slow and dissects the action and rythmn of clawhammer banjo. The best part is that this book keeps giving, plenty of tunes and much to learn after you get the basics.

If you are a clawhammer banjo teacher, as I am, this book is absolutely essential for you and your students. I especially apprecite Ken's attention to detail, the accurate rhythmic notation (which is often less then desirable in clawhammer books), and the generous amount of songs within the book. If there's a clawhammer equivalent to Earl Scrugg's book, this is it.

Awaiting his execution on trumpted up charges, Boethius attempts to reconcile his unjust sentence with concepts of "justice", "power", "happiness" and of course, "faith." Considered the first truly medieval philosopher, Boethius conducts a Platonic dialogue with Lady Philosophy, attempting to reconcile his Christian faith with the classical rationalist philosophy of Artistotle and Plato. What results is the first elucidation of "scholasticism" - and Boethius' conclusion that faith and reason are reconcilable.

Beyond the philosophical, I was struck by Boethius' resignation to his fate and his quiet confidence in the wrongs being righted. "No one can doubt that God is almighty" Philosophy began. "Certainly not, unless he is mad" I answered. "But nothing is impossible for one who is almighty." "Nothing." "Then can God do evil?" "No, of course not." "Then evil is nothing, since God, who can do all things, cannot do evil."

Both an excellent philosophical tract and a testament to the strength of human reason and belief, I highly recommend it.

The truly amazing thing about this work is that it was written in PRISON as Boethius awaited execution (following judgment and conviction based upon spurious charges). Bearing that in mind as I read "The Consolation of Philosophy" (if anyone ever needed consolation, it was an innocent man awaiting his own death; Christians should be able to relate to that idea) made it all the more remarkable. If you ever feel that life isn't fair, that others have it "in" for you, that it's tough to get an even break, maybe reading this will put things in better perspective. If not, it won't be due to Boethius' shortcomings....

Richard Woodman can be habit forming if you love stories from the days when men went down to the sea in ships that had clouds of sail on them and guns to run in and out of port holes when engaging the enemy. Having just finished this book, I felt compelled to embark on the next.

Some have commented that Woodman writes with an authenticity that makes you understand what it is like to stand on a quarterdeck with an enemy bearing down on you with both ships set to loose broadsides upon each other, or to navigate in the Artic Sea, as Drinkwater does in this particular novel as he commands a captured French corvette while protecting English whale fishermen from the French who are known to have designs on the area.

Edward R. Murrow, used to host a TV show, many moons ago, entited "You are There" where he would interview various people from history as though they were alive today. Woodman takes you there with his words and his writing and it is a very real trip indeed. You would be well advised to come on board.

Nat is now elevated to Master & Commander and given Job-Captain cy in charge of a corvette as escort to a group of whalers bound for Greenland. As well as the usual excellent sail evolutions, there is wonderful description of below-decks life here, as well as incidental details (some qory) of whaling boats and the hunt.

Several plots run together in this story; the threat of privateers; the differing agendas of the whalers; insubordination in the officers; and a pastor with a past. All are handled by a Captain who has matured as much as his author, in a way that has neither the bluffness of Jack Aubrey, nor the asperity of Hornblower.
Excellent reading; but why can I not find Mr. Woodman on the average bookstore's shelves? *****

I've now read the first five books in the Nathaniel Drinkwater series and continue to be impressed with the author's command of the English language and his colorful characterizations.

In reading these books I get a strong feeling of having been with Drinkwater on his adventures; such is the extent of Woodman's talent for description and characterization.

Even minor characters are not neglected. For example, here's a quote from page 167 describing the gunner's reaction to an unusual order: "The gunner frowned, raised an eyebrow and compressed his toothless mouth. Then, without a word, knuckled his forehead and waddled below."

Gratuitous characterizations such as that demonstrate that Woodman misses no opportunity to animate his characters.

Even though Drinkwater at this stage of his "life" is 40 years old and captain of a ship, the reader can sense that he's still learning how to be a good commander. He hurts from his old wounds and misses his wife and children. In other words, he seems real.

I hate to compare Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe books unfavorably to another author's series because the Sharpe books are entertaining, and I have read nearly all of them. But Sharpe is almost a cartoon character in comparison to Drinkwater. I often skip over much of the fighting scenes in Cornwell's books, but Woodman's power of description makes the fight scenes a pleasure to read.

I expect to read the rest of Woodman's Drinkwater novels in chronological order.

The book is in three parts, in the first of which Acting Captain Drinkwater must establish his leadership in a new command and lead a convoy of hard-bitten and angry whalers onto the Greenland whaling grounds. The second concerns the hunt for whales and, despite its misfortunes, how Drinkwater slips into a yacht cruise mentality. The third part returns us to the fact they are all at war with the French, who are rumored to have sent out corsairs during the false peace of 1802 to lay in wait and cripple the British economy when the world war resumed.

I found this one of the most interesting in the series. For all the Napoleonic era novels out there, this contains the first discussion of whaling in the North Atlantic I recall (and only a few other series include the more familiar Pacific whalers). Also, Drinkwater essays humor on occasion, despite his author's rather grim prose and concern with political machinations. Drinkwater often struggles with scepticism and faith, God, and duty to the navy, abetted here by a pastor/surgeon who is philosophically inclined and by a righteously subversive whaling captain. Woodman describes the arctic well, but only occasionally does he evoke its beauty and terror. Pay very close attention to the beginning chapters for there are clues to anticipating a final mystery. If you understand sailing commands and constantly track the state of the wind through the story then all the ship maneuvers make sense; otherwise ignore them as nautical "period atmosphere" and be poorer for it.

We get to hear more sail commands than usual, thanks to an insecure but punctilious 3rd lieutenant, and also learn in great detail the meaning of "jury-rigged." What strange names some fictional captains have: Drinkwater, Hornblower-and quite the opposite of their true characters.

Action in the Greenland Sea

This is book five in the Drinkwater series, and was a bit of a disappointment after some of the earlier books. Once again, the author skips forward. Book four, "The Bomb Vessel," ended in July 1801 after the First Battle of Copenhagen. This book covers a relatively brief period from May to November 1803, falling into the tendency that Patrick O'Brien had in some of his later novels of putting a little too much action into too short a period of time (sometimes moving ships about the ocean at fantastic rates of speed).

At the beginning of this story, we find Drinkwater on the beach, recovering from a wound received between novels. Admiral Jervis (now Earl St. Vincent and First Lord of the Admiralty) was known for promoting officers based on ability rather than interest, and he gives Drinkwater (now a commander) temporary command of the twenty-gun sloop Melusine after the ship's captain in incapacitated and resigns (why this would only be a temporary command is not entirely clear - Jervis had the authority to promote officers).

Action finds Drinkwater guarding a whaling fleet in the Greenland Sea, dealing with French privateers and English renegades, and seeking a French base. There is considerable detail about the operation of the whaling fleet and the hazards involved in arctic whaling. John Nicol, in his autobiography, gave a brief description of a voyage on a whaling ship to the Greenland Sea, and noted his resolution not to make another.

Like other novels in the series, characters in this novel carry over into the next.

"CRM: Getting it Right" by Ms. Judith Kincaid is a must for everyone who plans to play any role in a CRM project. It is particularly useful for CRM project managers since it lays out an excellent overview of the entire lifecycle of a CRM implementation. It is in fact a complete and exhaustive case study which walks the reader through every step.

Ms. Kincaid's excellent use of plain English and narrative method puts this book within the reach of a very wide audience. She succeeds in translating complex issues into layman's terms which any level reader could easily follow and benefit from. The clear writing is complemented with excellent visuals that make the material even more accessible. The book is very well organized and is full of practical tips and advice. Even experts in the field could benefit from this material by taking a bird's eye view journey and/or by zooming into smaller details as necessary.

The book is also full of ready to use excellent templates. Needles state, I highly recommend this book.

Enjoy it!

This CRM book really stands out from the pack! Kincaid has written a great practical guide for harried business people who
want to know what customer relationship management really means and what they should do before they run out to buy software to "do CRM." The case studies were very helpful in program planning and the templates saved a good deal of time getting going.
For anyone in business who needs to manage a team of business experts and information technology experts in a major project, this is THE book to buy. From definition to planning, implementation and measurement, this handbook for change gets you started and provides real guidance along the way.

Judith does an exceptional job in laying out both the overview and the details for a CRM program in any organization. She obviously has a wealth of experience in what to do and what not to do in developing and maintaining a CRM program. I especially like her interest in definitions, such as the definition of a customer and the definition of customer loyalty. Key ideas are clearly outlined throughout the book and I found it very easy to read and follow. Very helpful book for this subject matter.
