The Palace File should be number one on Hamid Karzai's reading list! The promises made in secret between one nation's leader and another have little value, it seems. Some would argue that such secret pledges should never be made by the elected leader of a true democracy. A fascinating book, rich in innovative analysis and historical detail on rail and bus management strategies and tactics. It's essential for students of both railroad history and California history. The detail will interest railfans, and the analysis would let them escape from conspiricay theories about the decline of rail passenger service.

Taking Dr. Smith's graduate seminar on the theology of the Cappadocians first alerted me to his skill as a pedagogue. After perusing a few chapters of his book, I now know that this dexterity extends from the classroom to his ability as an author. Dr. Smith makes Gregory of Nyssa, a pedantic Neoplatonic aristocrat and bishop of fourth-century Cappadocia, actually understandable. The chapters of his book are well-defined, articulate, and unambiguous. Furthermore, an appendix for discussion makes this book a candidate for study-groups, whether under the auspices of the church, or for personal use.
I highly recommend this book as an introduction to Nyssen's theological anthropology. Don't be fooled by the title, though. The book, faithful to it subject matter, covers much more than just theological anthropology. This topic bleeds into many others, and thus it serves as an oblique introduction to many other aspects of Nyssen's thought, and late antique Christian Neoplatonism in general.

It is written by an intellectual zealot for the Christian faith and the Reformed Tradition. Warfield's erudition may mean that his modern readers get stretched a bit, but if you want to understand how the various denominational distinctive views on salvation are fundamentally to be understood, this book is where to start.

The book is based on a series of lectures, as with Kuyper's Stone Lectures on Calvinism, and are therefore oriented toward an audience inclined to systematic study. The language on the whole is accessible and not overly technical. The lecture format gives the material a "bite-sized" nature which allows for reading in segments rather than having to carry a theme through the whole. All in all, this book will become indispensable to anyone who cares about the doctrines of salvation and needs grounding for their own understanding or for presenting it to others.

Great book! If you believe that we all have a purpose in life and that things happen for a reason, this book is for you. I read it in less than a week and it was great!
