So much information packed in such a wonderfully entertaining and informative book. This is a gem, I found this to be quite helpful in helping me learn to use the internet for reasearch and loved the section on creating a Bibliography, a great search engine delivers a great product.

In a chronological fashion, Darrell Bock provides readings that can be used by the teacher or preacher to help the audience better understand the context of the gospel passages. Utilizing Jewish texts such as the apocrypha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other sources, there is no better way the student can grasp the meaning of the gospel narratives without understanding the background, so I think this will make a perfect addition to any Christian's library. And you don't even have to know German to be able to read it! (like the Strack-Billerbeck six-volume set) Nicely done, and all in a paperback at a reasonable cost.

What is incredible in this book is the distinction of so many of the scholars Gregory A. Barker has persuaded to write. They are drawn from the top flights of international scholarship. What is even better is that he has persuaded them to write readable short readable essays which go straight to the heart of the matter. I know of no book which covers Jesus in the world religions in the way this does or speaks with such lively immediacy about him.

What is fascinating is that the differences are not solely between religions as inside them. The different Christian responses for example range from those who see the uniqueness of Christ as essential to Christianity and those like Archbishop William Temple who believe that the same word of God which inspired Jesus was also at work in the lives of Isaiah and Plato, Zoroaster, Buddha and Confucius.

Likewise the Jewish responses range from those who say that Jesus has no meaning or place within Judaism to those who hail Jesus as a Jew, as a Hebrew of the Hebrews who did not wish for or teach a new religion,and within whose Gospel teaching all Jews can feel at home.

Similarly in Islam there are those who see a gulf or abyss between Christianity and Islam and those who see the person of Jesus as a bridge across that abyss. Both viewpoints are fully represented here.

The same is true of Buddhism which is represented by writers from very different traditions. They approach Jesus in different ways but all seem fascinated by him. In the Theravada tradition the appeal is to the humanity of Jesus while in the pure-land tradition they may see at work that "the other-power of inconceivable reality transforming the life of Jesus". The Dalai Lama is quoted as saying that Jesus was either a fully enlightened being or a Bodhisattva with a high degree of spiritual realization.

As Christians we all face questions and struggles as our faith is tested everyday. Satan is out to stop us anyway he can. In this powerful little book (only 124 pages) that you could read in just one sitting author Gregory St. James sets out to answer some of life's most difficult questions such as why do good things happen to bad people, why are some people born mentally or physically deformed and why some people are rich, while others are poor. The author has done an excellent job on these teachings as well as the chapter on the Ten Commandments, explaining more in detail about each one and why we are to follow them; also the chapters on faith and the devil are excellent reads as well.

A good read for teens and adults alike who are seeking to enhance their spiritual knowledge, also excellent for debate and church teachings on these subjects.

This reviewer cannot agree with everything the author has written especially on such subjects as homosexuality, why Jesus was crucified and about Jesus' resurrection as I myself have different beliefs. So with that I cannot give this book an excellent rating as it is meant to teach and inform, but will admit the book is excellently written and easy to understand. Keeping that in mind if you read this inspirational book with bible in hand and remember it is just one man's opinion and not by any means the final word on any of these subjects "Jesus Is No Excuse" is a good read and study guide for some. The "Verses of St. James" in the back of the book are excellent words of poetry and a great inspiration to ponder upon. Also don't miss the "Last Words" for they are so profound and will have you pondering your own life. So read for yourself the words of St. James and reach your own conclusions as I guarantee it will at least leave you thinking and possibly searching for more.

This book is in your face like the the summary says. I highly recommend this quick read.

One of my favorite books when I was in school, I wanted to share it with my children in our homeschool setting for credit. This guide gives vocabulary, nifty assignments that are creative and thought provoking. One of our happiest memories as a homeschool family has come from using this guide for Johnny Tremain. Other guides we've used have all been great as well - we've used MacBeth, Hamlet, Scarlet Letter, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I also own 7 more I'll be using over the next 2 years and will be buying more. One high school guide can count as 1/4 credit for English (literature) if you do all of the activities.

I bought this book for an ICU rotation as intern and it has been remarkably useful. It is very concise yet useful in clinical application. For the busy intern or resident that doesn't have a lot of time for outside reading this the perfect companion. It also provides reference for source journal articles for further reading if interested. Overall, I am very happy I purchased this book.
