*If a shepherd leaves 99 sheep to track down one stray lamb, how
much more will God search for a wandering person?
*If a merchant sells all he has to purchaase a treasure of
inestiimable worth, would not god sacrifice at least as much to
repossess one of His own?

Homesick for God uses these parables and similar biblical passages to reinforce the point that there is a God who looks for those who stray from home, who frequently rescues His children from impossible situations, and who forgives them with no reciminations.

Author Joel Gregory examines the motivations of spiritual separation and reunion and then explains how to turn a longing for God into a reconciliaiton and then how to cultivate "staying power" with God through appropriating His promises and trusting His son.

There's a bit of the Prodigal Son in everyone, but like that youth's father, God does not want to write us off.

Gentle, firm, and consoling, Homesick for God will deepen your understanding of god's love and remedy even the most fervent case of spiritual homesickness.

Interesting and a great self coaching book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-07
Author Tim Kenning has done something I consider to be very clever. On one level The Houdini Principle is an fascinating introduction to the life and work of the enigmatic escapologist, filled with interesting anecdotes, photographs, challenges and newsprint. On another, it uses Houdini as a metaphor for personal freedom and growth. How do we escape from the binds of our lives? What do Houdini's remarkable feats offer as learning to us? The book brings out thought-provoking points about using one's strengths, taking control, changing what one believes about oneself (and about what's possible), making the most of situations and increasing creativity. We're challenged to wonder how unlimited we could each be if we could learn to have unreasonable amounts of self belief for ourselves. In short, it is an excellent book for self coaching.

The idea of using metaphor as a way to express personal development isn't new, but by using such an enigmatic reference, Tim Kenning's book is a more entertaining and enlightening experience than many of the academic personal development books around. By using a real-life reference, the stories and learning comes alive.

This book is for those who think our life is too short to get rich using conventional ways of investing. The techniques described in this book are bold, aggressive and very creative. It's not for regular financial investors, it's for those who aspire to become financial geniuses. Someone wise once said: "Knowledge is Power". This book provides just that.

Sweet book based on orthodox Orthodoxy!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-05
This book is written for those who wish to attain a higher level of living within the Orthodox church. It's about discipline (which alas, I don't live up to!) The premise is great-- you live each and every moment for God and your Guardian Angel. You get up, you cross yourself, you wash and say your morning prayers, you eat, you go about your day living for God. If someone speaks ill of you, you pray for that person; you do not wish them bad. It goes on. . . a very sweet book that one can apply to today just as one could with the same degree of difficulty as one could when it was written in 1904 Russia.

Compelling Drama

Review Date: 1999-09-10
This is an excellent book, a very quick read. The authors do an outstanding job of capturing the South Texas Catholic culture as well as the personalities of all of the main characters. This story would make for great non-fiction, but it's completely true, the characters all real. Anyone interested in cattle barons, oil bidness, a little Catholic church history, and the modern day "Old West" should read this compelling work.

The Image And Influence Of America In German Poetry Since 1945 by Gregory Divers (recipients of a Ph.D. in German literature, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri) is a very scholarly and meticulously written account of the German poetic perspective as affected and impacted by American culture throughout the decades after World War II, including the turbulent 1960s, the influence of Jazz to the Vietnam era, and the dramatic fall of the Berlin Wall. This college-level account is written in English, yet presupposes an understanding of German by presenting quotes and poem excerpts in their original language. The Image And Influence Of America In German Poetry Since 1945 is strongly recommended for 20th Century German Literature Studies reading lists and academic reference collections.

Articulation of fertile ideas on the philosophy of film
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

Written in 1995, Currie's Arguments are Concise, Persuasive on the topic of, generally, what is cinema.

Currie's Bibliography includes:
Carroll, Noel
Dennett, Daniel
Eco, Umberto
Lewis, David
Metz, Christian
Walton, Kendall

In college & graduate school, I have found writings on film studies, particularly those which apply psychoanalysis & semiotics, generally stodgy & often impenetrable. Even Mulvey's seminal, infamous essay on "Visual Pleasure" is hard to understand from the standpoint of a rationalist.

Currie's approach is Concise & persuasive; I think he's an analytic philosopher. He counter-argues against "film as a language," which I suppose is metaphorical at best (nevertheless, this language concept is found in many respectable film studies textbooks). His writing is accessible for college level & up; he applies findings in Cognitive Science to his arguments For the fictional film. Noel Carroll, a film studies iconoclast, embraces this book with one caveat: avant-garde films, films that are more purely visual than pictorial, are not tackled sufficiently here.

Here's a quick glimpse at the book, offered by University of Houston's Cognitive Science website.

It is highly possible to shape an advanced undergraduate course on the philosophy of film (mixed in with Philosophy of the Mind) with this book using such films as: Antonioni's "Blow-Up" Linklater's "Before Sunset" Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" Soderbergh's "The Limey" Haneke's "Cache" Bier's "Brothers" Hitchcock's "Spellbound"

Currie's next book "Arts & Minds" was released in January 2005.
