The book "A History of Alcatraz Island 1853-2008" by Gregory L. Wellman is fabulous. The photographs are numerous, as are the descriptions of the lives of the prisoners and those employed. It is written so you are pulled into every word, not just reading it, but feeling what it would have been like all those years ago. I suggest History of Alcatraz Island, 1853-2008 (Images of America: California) this book to everyone who enjoys history, or just interesting reading.

Ten years of research by the author is a fair guide to the amount of information contained in this book. The 31st Georgia, part of "Stonewall" Jackson's legendary foot cavalry saw action in almost every major battle in the eastern theatre. Mr White's research covers not just the battles, and the commanders of the 31st (most notably John Gordon) but also many personal details of the humble private. A fitting finale is a comprehensive roster of the regiment with as many details of each member as the author has been able to find - including in many places the date of death for those that survived. I really enjoyed all of this book - the author's research has led to a fine regimental history.

With minimum text, the introduction takes just one page, and the introduction to each of its four sections barley half a page each, `Hockney's Pictures' is aptly titled. The introduction explains the aim of each section: `Problems of Depiction', `Life Stilled', `Portraits' and `Space and Light', and then allows the pictures to provide the answers along with the occasional brief and down to earth comment from Hockney himself alongside the relevant picture.
This is a carefully designed volume; the almost square format comfortably accommodates both landscape and portrait proportions, the images are presented imaginatively on the page with a varied layout which manages to avoid being confusing. Many of the images are full page with some presented as full page bleed and some occasionally crossing the gutter. Each picture is given its title and date; the additional details of size and medium are to be found in a separate list at the back of the book. The book describes itself as having "325 illustrations, 277 in colour"; however this is slightly unfair for as far as I can tell the 48 black and white images comprise pencil or charcoal drawings, etchings and the like which in themselves are monochrome.
This is what an art book should be, full to the brim with images which, along with occasional comment from the artist, are allowed to speak for themselves.

What a wonderfully entertaining look at Hollywood and some of it's most famous characters from the inside. Gregory Walcott, a small town North Carolina boy who had a dream and a hundred dollars rode his thumb to California in pursuit of an acting career. He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. In this book you'll read a wonderful and uplifting story of a man, his dream and his career in Hollywood when American life was slower, sweeter and more like what we wish it was today.
I met Gregory Walcott as a boy when he visited my church in the small North Carolina village where his brother James was pastor. I've followed his career ever since and always delight to see one of his many movies or tv appearances. Gregory Walcott, now retired, was a prolific character actor and television star. I don't think a week goes by that I don't see him on TV.
Perhaps he's best known as the male hero in Plan 9 From Outer Space, considered the worst film ever made and one which Walcott shunned for years. Finally he realized that much of his fan mail came from Plan 9 fans. He formally apologized to Ed Wood at a film festival later in life and is happy to hear from Plan 9 fans to this very day.
Retired and enjoying life with his wonderful wife of over 40 years, Gregory Walcott spends his time with his children and grandchildren at his home in California. He continues to write and enjoy his retirement.
I highly recommend this book as a fun, quick and informative read. You'll read many wonderful tales from the backlots and few juicy ones as well.

Like the other books by this author, this one is full of little-known details and facts. Written in a style that's easy to read, it will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in classic horror movies and serious students of film.
The author has a real talent for digging up information, and this book was a joy for an old horror movie buff like myself. And it has pictures of the stars and directors of these movies, some of which I've not seen before.
Highly recommended

Plenty of husbands and wives in the job world today find themselves feeling as if they must choose between their careers and their families. The Gregorys say there is a better way to live and work, one that need not force spouses into such unfair decisions. The Gregorys, entrepreneurs and longtime journalists, present a compelling argument that working at home provides the perfect framework for a couple to design their lives the way they want, share more-and better-time and experiences together, and grow closer to each other and their kids in the process. Thanks to solid research, including interviews with dozens of "Home Team" couples nationwide-and a few internationally-the book contains a wealth of helpful how-to tips for couples who have been running full- or part-time businesses from the home for years, as well as why-to information for spouses in traditional jobs who desire a better life. The authors tackle topics such as: how couples with wildly different persona! lities and workstyles can work in the same home successfully; how to savor the joys of Home Team parenting, yet get your work done; how to rekindle or ignite the flames of romance and sex-before, during and after work; and potential career and life benefits for both women and men. Best of all, it's an entertaining read, which is refreshing from a business book. The Gregorys' writing style sends readers a clear message that both life and work can-and should be-fun. While the Gregorys are strong promoters of the lifestyle, this book is far from Pollyannish. The authors write that it takes an unwavering commitment to both the marriage and businesses for this lifestyle to be a success, and those who will not do so are better off sticking to more traditional ways of making a living. But those with a burn to chase business dreams and share more of life with their families will cheer The Home Team for the information and inspiration it provides that will help them create their own, m! ore rewarding vision of success.

I appreciate how the book demonstrates both the advantages as well as the drawbacks of using GIS technology in the context of historical research. It cleared up several misperceptions I had about GIS in general, which probably could have been done with any number of other GIS books out there, but as a historian, I appreciated the book being catered to my audience as opposed to a general reader.
The book is of similar quality as a college textbook, and appears to be used as such. While the authors do not assume the reader has a working knowledge of GIS, they do assume a basic understanding of the goals of GIS and how it might have potential in the field of historical research.
I highly recommend it to anyone in the field.
