This is an outstanding handbook, written by the folks in the Critical Care Department at the NIH. It is complete yet succinct. Highly recommend this to any and all intensivists.

Extremely well written book about John Brown and the history surrounding his life. The author brings the Civil War era (and Mr. Brown) to life, even to those readers who may not be particularly interested in this time period. Thumbs up. I am eagerly awaiting more works by this author.

To me, this represents a whole new way, and a completely engaging way, of telling a story. While it doesn't follow the traditional format of a novel and the main (really only) character is hateful, I found myself absorbed by the intelligent use of language and the central idea: What if you could change bodies and personalities at will, but never go back? Who would you be? What would you do? What would you accomplish? And then? If you like the work of Nicholson Baker ("The Fermata" comes to mind), I think you'll love this. It will give you something to think about long after you've turned the last page.

This is a brilliant, brilliant book, deeply insightful about the Irish American experience. I was sorry to see that it is out of print.

I am a grad student in psychology doing a thesis on gay/lesbian hate crimes. This volume is packed full of information. Gregory Herek, is a leader in the field. A must have for anyone interested in the topic of hate crimes.

this book is simply amazing. it charts the evolution of our universe and the elements within it, from the big bang onwards, explaining exactly how stars have evolved and why life exists. easy to read, fascinating, and requiring no background in science, this book should be a standard in schools.

This is a first-rate and thorough analysis of Heidegger's thought of selfhood, from the early writings focusing on fundamental ontology to the last seminars in the late sixties and early seventies. Raffoul provides an in-depth treatment of Heidegger's critique of the tradition of the subject, particularly through close readings of Descartes and Kant. He then carefully unfolds Heidegger's ontological appropriation of the subject, focusing on Heidegger's thought of Dasein, of transcendence and being-in-the-world, ecstasis and reflection. The work culminates in a meditation on Heidegger's notion of 'mineness' (Jemeinigkeit), a notion that indicates that the event of being is 'each time mine,' that is, each time my own task to be. Raffoul thus argues that Heidegger's thought is not without a reflection on the proper being of human beings, and that his critique of the subject opens onto a renewed understanding of what it means to be human. This is an important work, for it engages Heidegger's texts rigorously while staying away from sterile polemics. It is both a contribution to Heidegger studies and to the task of a philosophical rethinking of selfhood.

Fried wrote a very compelling book that explores the political ontology of Martin Heidegger. Unlike many Heidegger scholars, Fried achieves a reading which is both solid and orginial by displacing the focus of Heidegger's work to the notion of polemos. In his reading of Heraclitus, Heidegger deploys a political ontology that posits the polis as a qualified space were the ontological difference takes place. This is a great book for political theorists and people interested in Heidegger as a political thinker.

I first saw this book while having dinner on a friends boat. I liked it so much, especially since I used to sail on a Herreshoff boat when I was a kid, that I got my own copy. Its really well written, and the Herreshoff family is pretty amazing. Nat isn't ever going to make Father of the Year, but he really designed some great boats. His son Francis somehow survived his father and made his own great boats. This is a beautiful book, with lots of amazing photographs, and a great story too. I never knew about all the power boats that the Herreshoffs designed, or all the boats for the navy. I think even people who just want an interesting book to read with beautiful photographs would like this book.
