A story about one man's quest for intimacy and absolution.

Review Date: 1999-01-02
John Venner is a middle-aged Doctor of Divinity who is in the process of a divorce from the true love of his life. He is also obsessed with the last colony of Shakers in New England, and particularly the youngest member of the community, 23 year old Sabbathday Wells. In a way only Smith could describe, Venner searches for real love and intimacy in a morally corrupt post-modern america. He dreams of redemption by purity, by the simple acts of hard work, and cleanliness of soul and body. His need for intimacy- divine and human- leads him on a sexual quest for the last American virgin. This book is extremely entertaining to read, immaculately written, and shows a depth of understanding of the post-modern soul which is rare indeed.

Greg Tozian's "Doll Head Eater" is a unique collection of wild, strange, and wonderfully funny stories told in a genuinely original voice. If you sit down in a bar with this guy, neither one of you will get any drinking done because he'll be telling you non-stop, unreal, stream-of-consciousness rants and can't stop flapping his hands long enough to reach his glass, and you'll either be laughing too hard to drink or your mouth will be hanging open, and the booze will pour out in your lap. Either way, end of the evening, you'll be drunk. Perfect reading for travel without a destination. Highly recommended.

A fascinating tale about the downfall of a great news agency, and the charlatans and incompetents who ran it into the ground despite the heroics of an outstanding staff of news professionals. The authors are two veteran UPI newsmen who lost their jobs because they would not allow the owners to censor the absolutely true, if ugly and sordid, tale of management incompetence and malfeasance.

This book captured my interest as it is the basis of an oratorio by Sir Edward Elgar. Being a musician, I like to do a bit of research into literary sources of musical compositions.

The book contains a disclaimer that some pages may be missing or that print quality may be less than perfect or that strange paginations may appear. This edition of The Dream of Gerontius contained all of the pages and color quality was fine. There were some checks and X's throughout but nothing that hampered the intelligibility of the text.

A very nice book that has what you need to read ABG's.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.

This book is a very compact and concise manual with all you really need to know regarding the reading of ABG's. It has a chapter on the techniques for obtaining the specimen and then hits right into the reading of the results. A nice simple outline for reading ABG's is in this book and the price is right too. Written with a lot of humor and on a level that that is pretty easy to understand. I'd recommend this book to medical students, interns and residents.

Monastic Saints
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-04
This book is a translation of the biographies of six early monastic saints of Christianity. The particular lives - Antony, Paul of Thebes, Hilarion, Malchus, Martin of Tours and Benedict - are chosen as representatives of particular monastic styles from the early hermits to the monastic community, as generally envisioned today. The choice is also driven by the fact that the lives were written in Latin, which is the interest of Latin scholar and translator, Carolinne White.

In her introduction, she discusses the issues of proper translation, the types of monasticism, the milieu of their lives, and the styles of the authors, the likes of Sts. Athanasius and Jerome, Sulpicius Severus and Gregory the Great. To put things in context, she also provides a brief introduction to each biography.

For the Christian, however, the value of the book is the witness to the lives themselves. They are inspirational, if not almost unbelievable; so far are God's work through them so different than our own modern experience and subconsciously accepted empiricism. These are struggles with visible demons, not only seen by them, but also seen or felt by those around them. These are struggles with pagans and with heretics who mean to torture and kill them. These are struggles with the envious, who want a prophetic relationship with God without making the sacrifice. And these are struggles with good Christians, who fall and are helped by them.
