This was a highly enjoyable book, filled with mystery and suspense but also allowed the reader a look into another culture. The mixing of current action with the Indian flashbacks was done in a manner that made the reader want to get back to each part of the story while also being anxious about what was currently unfolding. The characters were developed fully and with just enough detail that the reader could understand motivations without being bogged down in unnecessary history. The plots twists were unexpected and the use of foreshadowing was very effective. The ending, although complete, leaves the reader with the question, "Is there a sequel." The author has a real feel for his charactes and this reviewer awaits another Greg Kincaid novel.

Whether or not you're an amateur on the subject of deep sea biology, but this children's book is suprisingly helpful. Has very simple explanations & the illustrations are beautifully accurate. Any child (or adult!!!) who wants to learn about the deep sea, this really is the book to start with.

Important & fascinating history of the California Grape Strike
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-26
The California Grape Strike, which started in 1965, was a watershed event for farm laborers in American history. This strike not only resulted in widespread organization of farm laborers, but it also catapulted Cesar Chavez into the limelight.

John Dunne was an observer and a participant in many of the activities during the strike period. This book is the culmination of his effort to recreate the event. The book is largely a memoir, with some analysis of Chavez's legacy and the importance of farm worker organization. Above all, it is an important source of material for anyone trying to understand 1960's labor history within the confines of Latin American/Chicano history or western history. Since this is primarily a memoir, there are no footnotes or sources included, nor is there a bibliography or an index - these are the only weakenesses of the book, and are not significant enough to detract from the importance of the subject matter.

I am a nursing student, and this was assigned as one of the companion books for maternal-child health. I really enjoyed it. We didn't discuss the cases in our class, but it was a great reinforcer for self learning. I appreciated how they gave detailed answers to the ten or so questions following each scenario. It flowed, the length of each scenario was achievable as a homework assignment, and it felt like efficient, worthwhile learning.

The Implications of International Law Revealed
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-26
Suppose you were living in a village of thirteen people. You and your neighbors elected one person to be the mayor of your village, and made virtually all public decisions by referendums allowing your mayor to put your decisions into action. You would invariably manage few resources, and exert little power on the communities around you; however, you would have a substantial degree of control in your affairs. Now suppose you moved to a village of approximately 63 billion. You now have a village council, a mayor, a local representative, a governor, a national representative, a president or prime minister, and an international representative. There are thousands of issues decided each day, some of these are legislative issues bound to become laws, some judicial decisions that will have legal bearing - all will effect you and your life. Consequently, the degree of control you can exert over your own affairs has virtually evaporated. What happened to the spread of liberal democracy? This much needed text answers these questions with lucid professionalism and keen insight. In a world where the theory of a "global village" is increasingly and increasingly convincingly being advanced, international law theoretically also becomes increasingly necessary - this global village is interdependent, and thus there must be universality to the laws. Messrs. Fox and Roth provide a practical response to theory with this excellent text, which is divided up into five parts: (1) the normative foundations of a right to political participation; (2) democracy and inter-state relations; (3) democracy and the use of force; (4) democratization and conflicting imperatives; and, (5) critical approaches. There are several chapters within each of these larger parts, each chapter is an essay contributed by a significant legal or international studies scholars. For students of any international interest this text is indispensable to forming cogent arguments and/or proposals.
