Gregory Murphy begins this extraordinary book by saying, "Concepts are the glue that holds our mental world together". This is actually an understatement. Without concepts there would be no mental world in the first place. Concepts are mental representations that tie together specific instances, and are essential for relating ongoing experience to knowledge from the past. Concepts allow us to move from William James' "blooming buzzing confusion" to structured and adaptive thought.

Murphy is one of the leading scholars in this area, and he reviews a messy and complicated literature with honesty, clarity, and wit. This is going to be the classic text in the field for a very long time. It is one of the rare cases where the standard back-of-the-book blurb is actually true: Anyone seriously interested in concepts and categorization - seasoned researchers, graduates and advanced undergraduates, or scholars who simply want to get a sense of the field - really must read this book.

Once again, Greg has made me laugh, made me cry, and made me think about what is truly important in this life. I pull this book out when I want to feel inspired, and I suggest that others do the same.

This book has excellent illustrations which are a little bit larger than usual. The special advantage of this category of birding reference is that it is restricted to the species of birds that I am likely to see in my area. This type of advance filtering is a significant help.

Illustrations are very good as is the detail provided to each species (1 full page) and includes similar species comparisons for easier identification. Well organized and decent sized print. Showed it to a couple of life-long birders and they plan to purchase it.

This is probably my favourite Bitchy Bitch book (to date). I've always found Bitchy a grimly hilarious take on the petty awfulness of dull office jobs, crummy worker- and worker-management relations and the difficulties of being an aging singleton straight woman who relentlessly resists embracing life. Certainly anyone, male, female, gay, straight, whatever, who's done a dead-end job will relate to this character. But Roberta Gregory has also dug deeper into Bitchy/Midge, and I think most rewardingly in the strips in this book, in which we explore her traumatic 50s childhood and the horrors and delusions of adolescence and teen pregnancy in the late 60s/early 70s ('Hippy Bitch Gets Knocked Up'). These stories are moving because they are so entirely unsentimental. They are larger than life yet feel horribly accurate.

Gregory is the godmother of feminine alternative comix and every issue of her "Naughty Bits" comic(from which "School Daze" is drawn) is a pure laugh-your-ass off delight; an offer you surely MUST not refuse!!! From her first work "Damsels In Distress" with her sisterhood/superdyke phase in full swing, Gregory has grown and broadened her perspective to the point where "School Daze" can be recommended enthusiastically to open-minded people of all persuasions over the age of 16. A marvelous addition to an already incredibly impressive body of work. Roberta rules!!!

Assessing Risk for Homicide
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-29
In BLIND-SIDED, Dr. Moffatt offers highly readable and understandable information on assessment of risk for homicide. Dr. Moffatt's work utilizes a hierarchy of risk variables for violent behavior. This twenty-two item list includes factors such as a history of violent or aggressive behavior, subjective fear of the individual by others, and fantasies of violence. His explanation and discussion of these factors is clear and informative. Dr. Moffatt realized that people could be trained to recognize basic warning signs and that they did not need formal training in psychology to provide intervention that could save lives. His work focuses on homicide among people with no apparent violent patterns in their pasts. His work, however, revealed that many of the killers he studied had a history of violence in their pasts but for one reason or another this had not been reported. BLIND-SIDED includes discussion of seven mistakes, from ignoring or failing to respond adequately to threats, to failure to call for help soon enough, that can cost people their lives. We know that this type of tragedy could happen to us. Reading BLIND-SIDED will give us a better understanding of homicide and of how assessing risk for homicide hopefully can help to save our lives and the lives of those we love.
