Arthropod Systematics at its eclectic best

Arthropods are one of the most diverse and long-lived phyla in the animal kingdom. Their origins date back to the pre-Cambrian, and over the decades that they have been studied, they have generated controversy that persists to the present and will likely extend into the future. Yet this controversy is not fueled by idle speculation, but by the sometimes-bewildering complexity of arthropod diversity, both in the living representatives and in the fossil record. This book delves into the analyses of molecular, morphological, and paleontological data, and allows the critical reader to assess the disparate conclusions of the leading arthropod systematists. At the same time, the spotlight chapters on celebrated fossil arthropod sites (such as the Burgess Shales, the Chengjiang site, and others, allow a focus on the early diversification of Arthropod groups, as well as lobopods and the earliest crustaceans. Many illustrations and charts add interest to this challenging book. If you want more than a cursory exposure to Arthropod evolution. This is the book for you!

An excellent issue, with one 4.5 story, and one dodgy one, ending with McAuley's rather cool underwater adventure.
There's a rather epic Spinrad book review cum column, that espouses upon some small press and French books including a Di Filippo novel called Ciphers which is apparently replete with rock 'n roll jokes. That can't be bad.
A couple of quotes :-
"Years ago, Ron Busch, president of Pocket Books, in cancelling David Hartwell's Timescape line, explained in the pages of the New York Times that he was doing it because the books were too intelligent. He wanted to start a new line that would publish stupider books.
Really. No shinola. You could look it up.
"Trop hardi."

Yes, it would seem that it is now possible for a science fiction novel to be rendered commercially non-viable in the eyes of the publishing powers that be by an excess of literary virtues!
What further sign do we need that the "story" of science fiction, its genre publishing apparatus, its subculture of fans, its dedicated idealistic science fiction writers, its passionate editors, has reached an ending, and not a happy one?
Well, only one, much more dire, not merely for science fiction, but, I would contend, for our planetary civilization itself.
And, alas, we have it.
Science fiction would seem to have lost its visionary raison d'ĂȘtre. Our civilization would seem to have lost its positive evolutionary concept of "the future."
Perhaps you've noticed that even the best science fiction of the past few years and more seems to be dystopian to one degree or another, dealing at best with idealistic heroic figures attempting to revive the visionary virtues in a future devolved in one way or another from the present.""

Automotive Fire Analysis: An Engineering Approach

Being particularly interested in fire prevention, and being in fond of installing fire extinguisher mountings inside the cars, I had lack of knowledge in automotive fire and fire prevention. This book was what I missed for a long time. Here is something what I've learned from this paperback:
In the early days of automobiles, safety was virtually unheard of. For example, until the late 1940s automobiles used plate glass in the windshield and side glass. Early motor vehicle is little more than a speeding gas can with a sofa mounted on it. These cars used cotton batting, mohair and natural fibers to upholster and insulate the interior. These early vehicles would smolder, ignite and sustain a flame quite well. Much like the upholstered chairs or sofas found in the home, something as simple as an errantly discarded cigarette would ignite the material into a giant blazing inferno.
Starting with the history of automotive safety, the book proceeds to contemporary cars, which consist of materials virtually inflammable, unless exposed to any kind of fire accelerant. Almost every substance of earth contains carbon in some form. If subjected to a high enough level of heat, pretty much everything will burn. Items thought to be not flammable such as steel and concrete become flammable if exposed to a 7000F (3500C) fire.
Describing fire behavior basics, the books analyzes burning characteristics of exhaust system and underhood flammable liquids like gasoline and diesel fuel, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, hydraulic ride fluid, brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, windshield washing fluid. Ignition capabilities of air filters and fuel injection system is also analyzed. The book conduct an in-depth inquiry of electrical system and fire: battery, alternator, started motor, HVAC, engine ignition coil, electrical switch, solenoids, wiring looms, fuse and relay panel, etc.
Targeted to fire investigators, the books describes engineer's principal job to determine if there exists a primary failed part which could have caused an operational mode fire, and to find arson indicators, since deliberate arson is a crime. The most common mistake ca perpetrator makes in deliberate arson is that a copious quantity of flammable liquid is splashed around the interior or the engine compartment and then ignited. The result will be a burn pattern which will be obviously greater than the available fuel load. The book completes with the chapter "Engineer in the courtroom", which describes proper investigation techniques, scene photography, forensic tools, subrogation issues, arbitration and the superior court action.
I don't have a CD-ROM which seems to accompany this book.

The perfect book for breaking down religious barriers

It seems as though everyone goes through a period of questioning their spirituality in life, and for me it started shortly after college. This book is perfect for anyone going through a similar situation. Gregory Huth addresses some of the paradoxes in the bible I have always felt needed further explanation, and he does it in a manner that does not contradict or offend people of various religious backgrounds. In fact, he highly stresses the importance of looking past religion into the deeper aspects of being spiritual and I couldn't agree more. After reading the book I feel more secure in my personal spirituality and can more fully appreciate the different spiritualities of those around me. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who considers themselves even remotely spiritual and especially to those who are searching for the answers to some of the questions that cannot be answered by simply attending church.

One of the things that I really liked about this book was the author's style. She has written the book in a very understandable way. I can quickly find and understand what I need. It is also refreshing because she does not spend a lot of time or pages explaining any one thing.
I'm finding the book to be very helpful when I write for my assignments in school and also for my job.
This is probably the first dictionary that I have ever used where I did not spend hours trying to sort out what was being said. She has also provided excellent cross referencing which makes it easy for me to find and understand other grammar terms that may be related to the one I originally looked up.
I think her examples are great too. It is a unique book in that she put the examples before the explanation, which makes it really nice. So often, all I needed was the example.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It is something that you may not use everyday, but it is there when you need it!

Excellent and practical Bayesian primer

Phil Gregory has managed to condense the most important aspects of Bayesian probability and data analysis into a book that is actually rather practical. This book will give you a solid Bayesian understanding of probability, starting with first principles (Cox's desiderata), continuing to Bayes theorem, an introduction to common probability distributions, and concluding with rather advanced numerical techniques such as tempered Markov Chain Monte Carlo. The book is geared towards a reader who will use Mathematica to work through examples, but can be successfully used by others who prefer cheaper and more practical computational frameworks. It's not a flawless book by any means---first of all, although the book purports to cover frequentist alternatives to Bayesian methods, the frequentist coverage is very shallow and inadequate to give the reader enough background to either use or really understand frequentist usage. The chapter on maximum entropy techniques is woefully incomplete, and doesn't include general Jeffreys priors (derived from the Fisher information) or really explain the various issues associated with defining the entropy for continuous distributions. The section on deriving priors with uncertain constraints actually doesn't give an answer to how to handle uncertain constraints! But on the plus side this book answered a number of questions that have long puzzled me, such as why frequentists marginalize over nuisance parameters by minimizing the likelihood function with respect to them instead of integrating over them (it's a dodge that only really works for Gaussian-like distributions), and how to handle the enormous numbers of parameters that Bayesian calculations can generate through the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlos. I wish the book had been longer or more detailed, but if you want to learn Bayesian analysis and don't care much about understanding frequentist statistics, this is an excellent place to start.
