NOTE: My class is using the third edition of the "Principles of Microeconomics" by Mankiw, but the second edition study guide is completely useable with the 3rd edition of the book.

This study guide is comprehensive. It gives the reader a chapter review, hints that really are helpful, matching terms to definitions, problems and short answer questions, an abundance of True/False and multiple choice questions, and finally, "advanced critical thinking". This is exactly what a study guide should be.

Carey's PRIVATE MEDICAL PRACTICE: GETTING IT STARTED & MAKING IT WORK should be on the "required reading" list of any health care practitioner nearing the end of their training, and for those contemplating a new job offer. Aimed primarily at physicians, all health care providers will find useful information on topics such as writing a CV, evaluating practice opportunities, personnel management and administration, financial and risk management and managed care. She includes a "Twelve-month" plan on starting a new practice that takes in to account every little detail that may crop up. Carey is well-qualified as an author having over 15 years experience as a practice management consultant for physicians. As a military physician preparing to enter civilian life, this book was a lifesaver.

An important discipline- establishing work
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-16
This book makes an argument for the establishment of a new academic discipline, " The Psychology of Science". In its first part it discusses the qualities and character of those who do scientific work. In its second it gives a evolutionary psychological explanation of the development of science. This development is summarized by Russ D. Tweny in his outstanding review of this book in 'American Scientist'

The explanation " builds on recent work in evolutionary psychology, cognitive anthropology and evolutionary biology, applying concepts from all of these areas to sketch a theory of how the modern scientific mind could have evolved. Drawing from such writers as Mervin Donald and Steven Mithen, Feist proposes four stages, beginning with "preverbal science," originating perhaps two million years ago, in which predictive folk science operated. The evolution of language (which took place perhaps 50,000 years ago) triggered a second phase, "verbal science," in which storytelling, myth and cosmological explanations appeared, followed by the emergence of externalized representations (about 30,000 years ago--think cave paintings). These depictions signaled the beginning of a phase of applied science in which units of measurement, rudimentary mathematical operations, archaic forms of astronomy and the like were developed, culminating in the engineering achievements of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The final stage, that of "pure science," then emerged with the ancient Greeks (around 2,600 years ago), opening the door to science as we think of it today."

Tweney wonders whether Feist's definition of Scientific work is not too broad but he highly endorses the book as a rich and comprehensive pioneering study.

As our world is more and more dominated in 'truth- seeking ' by scientific exploration it seems to me that the study in depth of the 'psychology of Science' is an almost inevitable development, one which
this present work advances.

This is a work which not simply scientific researchers, but general readers with interest in Science will probably wish to read.

What Others Are Saying about The Psychology of Science

Winner, William James Book Award, American Psychological Association, 2007: "Feist argues convincingly for an integrated study of the psychology of science. The writing is entertaining and compelling. The book should be of interest to every psychologist and a very wide audience of educated laypersons" (Prize Committee)

"This book does two things: It provides a comprehensive review of the origins and development of scientific thinking, and it argues for a dedicated study of the psychology of science. . . . The book is entertaining and introduces a perspective on understanding science and the scientific mind that should benefit a wide audience."--Magda Osman, Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA)

"Have you ever wondered what goes on inside scientists' heads when they formulate a grand theory? Or when they decide what hypothesis to test? How does this differ from the mundane reasoning involved when you explain why your car won't start or choose a birthday present for a relative? More generally, do scientists use the same cognitive mechanisms available to us all (supplemented with formal, conceptual, and technological tools)? Or does scientific thinking require more specialized cognitive abilities, available to only a talented few? If you are interested in such questions, then Gregory Feist's The Psychology of Science and the Origins of the Scientific Mind is the book to read...The Psychology of Science and the Origins of the Scientific Mind succeeds on many levels. Feist pulls together a vast range of psychological research with clarity and insight, and he advances an intriguing framework for the cognitive origins of scientific thinking. The book makes a strong case for an integrated study of the psychology of science."--David Lagnada, Science

"A fascinating look at the subject of science and scientific knowledge, The Psychology of Science is a worthwhile book for both academic and non-academic audiences."--Shereen Hassanein, Metapsychology

"Gregory Feist's new book covers two broad topics. The first and longest part is an extended argument that a large body of recent work implicitly falls under the rubric "psychology of science." Feist reviews studies from neuroscience, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, personality psychology and social psychology to support his assertion. The second part of the book presents a novel theory of the origins of science as the outgrowth of evolutionary processes...Even a casual browse will uncover many fascinating findings...A rich and diverse book."--Ryan Tweney, American Scientist

Putting Islam to Work: Education, Politics, and Religious Transformation in Egypt (Comparative Studies on Muslim Societies , No 25)

Reproduction & Transformation of Islamic Religiosity
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-17
Starret concise work stands out amongst a sea of books written
about religion (esp. Islam) in the Middle. While the unsecular
character of Mid. East Societies, in this case Egypt, and their
affinity by so-called violent religiosity has been attributed to a
primitive mentality of the people, cynical demagoguery by politi-
cians, angst-ridden youth, disillussionment of the middle-aged,
poverty, anti-Western hysteria, and rage arising from political im-
potence and failure, Starret gives an alternative account that is
actually convincing. He does this by drawing the roadmap between
the sensationalist events such as revolutions and assassinations
by examining how the religious citizen is constructed through
national discourse, with a specific focus on the development of
Egypt's educational system from Muhammad Ali's transformation
of the kuttab to later permuations under the British, Nasser,
Sadat, and onward. The result is a highly believeable account of
the salience of religion and religious conflicts [of all sorts,
not just the less-interesting, violent ones] in the country inte-
grated with the national changes in thinking with regard to such
subject as mass media, religious authority and the market. Thus,
the works offers numerous keen insights into the reproduction of
Islamic religiosity and its transformations in Egypt today through
the various interplays between power and public culture. His
anthropological-historical approach is a fresh and welcome one.

An editorial criticism of the book as whole: the Arabic throughout
is atrociously transliterated. I ended up making notes in the
margins of my copy to make phrases written in Latin script intelli-
gible. Particularly, iDaafa constructions are not written, hard-
letters are not distinguished from soft letters, long and short
vowels are not differentiated, and sometimes letters are just out-
right confused (e.g., dhaal and Zaa'). With relatively standard-

ized options of Arabic transliteration out there, this book is just
sloppy and amateurish in its final edit. Perhaps this won't
bother those who are ignorant of Arabic; however, for those who
are familar with the language, it's a continually frustrating
blemish.

Plausible Alternatives for Roots of Islamic Resurgence

By focusing on education, Starrett shows that political ands socio-economic issues alone are insufficient in explaining the rise of islamic revivalism. The combination of increased literacy and Islamic awareness made possible by the spread of public education, in which religion has played a principal role, and its functionalization to serve the purposes of social engineering has made Islam a matter of increasing socio-political concern. The proliferation of Islamic affordable literature and media from official and private sector sources. The scope of religious discourse among non-specialists has widened and the Islamic establishment no longer holds a monopoly on this debate which is presently characterized by a variety of viewpoints. Starrett speaks of a new Islam now taking shape in Egypt as a result of the mass proliferation of Islamic publications and spread of literacy and communications media. Education's particular role in this process has been to create the demand for more religious information and from more sources as the religious discourse widens.

"This book is a smartly put together guide, with easy access to information for both the novice e-Learning individual/organization, and those who have some background and experience designing and developing e-Learning. Greg's A Quick Guide to e-Learning is concise, logical, well organized, articulate, and educational, without becoming overwhelming. He starts with the basics of defining e-Learning, e-Learning concepts, who makes up the e-Learning team, and e-Learning content structures. At the heart of Greg's book is his view of the e-Learning lifecycle, from analysis thru testing, implementation, and maintenance. Greg ends with discussions of evaluation modes, content management and determining the value of e-Learning products.

For those who wonder what e-Learning is all about, and how to get started, Greg's book is easy-to-follow and straight forward. For those who are seeking yet another 'perspective' into the continually evolving processes that define and model a successful e-Learning implementation, Greg's book is again a superb guide. A must for everyone's e-Learning library!"

I can add little to the comprehensive review above. From a Lutheran perspective, and ethical point of view, it is a must read for the fomation of community and character. In my estimation it is weak sacramentally, which is where I believe ethics flow from, however there are many, many fine insights in this work. Anyone serious about Christian ethics should read this book.

Best book on practical hermenutics

It's a shame that this book is no longer in print. There is no book I would recommend higher regarding hermeneutics. This book does not deal with the philosophical and technical questions that leave most people bewildered when thinking about the relation of scripture to our life today, but focuses instead on the importance of wisdom and character in our reading of the text in our churches. Hauerwas was right, the chapters on Bonhoeffer and Jeremiah are worth the price of the book alone. I recommend that you scour used book stores to find this book.

Excellent analysis of Bateson, Recursion and Ecology
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-12
Ecological understanding is a must for all generations. For those with the courage to think through the implications of an ecological world view and want to learn the scientific concepts which help facilitate greater understanding of natural systems, leading to (hopefully) better decisions regarding resource use, this is a great book. By tackling recursion and non-linear causation at multiple time scales and cognitive levels, Harrie-Jones helps enrich the recuriveness of population level learning. Bateson was, NO DOUBT, one of the most challenging thinkers of his generation. Struggling at all times to keep his focus on how to make nature and communication more intelligible to more people so that they would have the tools and wisdom to see the consequences of their action on both other people and the planet. Rigorous and enchanting cognitive medicine for all those working to make a better world.

An extraordinary explanation of Bateson & mind in Biology!

Review Date: 1996-05-18
The best explanation of Gregory Bateson's ideas I have read! An amazing achievement by Peter Harries-Jones! Understand mind in Nature or be doomed! Politics must become aesthetic & beautiful for the optimal survival of humans on Earth or space. Continues examples of nature of autopoeisis, artificial life, Varela & Maturana, and interesting ideas about consciousness in biology... very good on showing biology as closed 'information' systems. A real ecological understanding!

(A New Edition of this book is being released in October 2006)

Some books are known to have influenced a generation, or a generation of thinkers. This book has the potential to do it a second time. Baum has re-written the entire book, dropping whole chapters and adding new ones.

This book was first published in 1975 as Religion and Alienation: A Theological Reading of Sociology and was immediately recognized as the seminal book on the continuing discussion between religion and sociology. This new edition will challenge a new generation of readers, thinkers, and students of either religion or sociology. This book is designed to help people encounter the gospel as a message of hope and liberation - a guidebook to help set us free from the prisons we have walled ourselves into, or that we have allowed society to place us into.

UW's own Scott Kline and David Seljak, who both teach at St. Jerome's University (SJU), wrote the forward to this new edition and give the book high praise.

Baum takes us on a journey through a series of progressive thoughts and areas of study to draw us forward into the study of religion and alienation. Baum looks at religion as both the source of alienation and as a product of alienation. He examines how alienation is also a product of the industrial society. Baum tackles the ambiguity that religion creates, both from a biblical perspective and from the perspective of the social sciences. Then he brings into the discussion the psychologists, with both Freud's and Durkheim's perspectives on symbolism. Those are but the beginnings of Baum's work on this diverse topic.

This book will be an excellent addition to any religious thinker's library. It was thirty years in the making and time has only made it better. Even if you read only the last chapter on the five reasons that theologians should engage in dialogue with social thinkers, it will make the book worth the changes.

The book Renaissance Artists Who Inspired The World as one of the Explore The Ages books was a satisfying and delightful
read. As both a grade school educator and Italianate , the reader found this book to be a treasured experience .

The book was a complete learning experience with text , visuals
and end of book learning activities .

The text was well researched and thourough . It presented a balanced view of artists , accomplishments and of women artists as well.

The visuals are rich with information and color. They continue to be a source or information and enjoyable source for rereading. The timelines are perhaps the best of any .

The learning activities of Readers' Theater , Family Theater , variety of activities and the Test of Knowledge
create a complete reading and learning experience.

The glossary , index and skills index are reader and learner compatible as well .

Reading this book was especially enjoyable after just taking a mini course about the Renaissance Art. The two seemed to be complimentary . The book was very successful in delivering information about what the Renaissance inspired . A follow up trip to Italy proved the reading of this book to be very helpful. The Renaissance spirit easily captured in this book makes it easily discovered again in Italy .

Thank you Gregory Blanch and Roberta Stathis for this true treasure !
