Finally this classic and enduring book on the Dutch Barn is again available, now in an updated version. No one has spent more time going over, first hand, the barns first studied by Fitchen. Now Fitchen's original material is available without having to scour the used book stores. The new material by Huber brings up to date the first field work done by John fitchen in the 1960's. Any one with even the slightest interest in Early American Dutch Architecture must get this book. Not only does this book fully explain the barn , but the reader can easily then understand how the same basic construction procedures apply to the Dutch House.

As John Fitchen's, "The New World Dutch Barn" has been out of print for so many years and interest in NWDBs has increased over the last few years Gregory Huber's edited 2nd Edition is a much welcomed addition to any barn research library.

Mr. Huber's new material as presented in the chapter Introduction to the Second Edition and in the Appendices C. New Checklist of Dutch Barns and D. Huber's responses to Fitchen's text and the Glossary have made this second edition even more valuable than the first edition to the NWDB enthusiast. The leaving intact of the original edition gives the new barn researcher a chance to own the best of both worlds.

Mr. Huber's description of the five fundamental forms of NWDBs along with all of the exceptions and regional variances may possibly bring to the forefront hitherto undocumented barns. As Mr. Huber points out, there are more altered than unaltered barns and knowing a lot of the possibilities will aid NWDB enthusiasts.

I strongly recommend this second edition as required reading for serious NWDB lovers and barn lovers in general.

This book is fantastic! It's not long and drawn out, but short and to the many points that the author desired to make. There's nothing 'fake' about the book, not some plastic smile on a face. The words are honest and real to the reader. A breath of fresh air and wonder in the midst of so many books that say 'just do this or that and everything will be better'. It's not a 'how-to' book, but truly a testimony of a 'work in progess'. This book is filled with hope for those who have 'been there' - no matter what the particular circumstance (abuse), because it doesn't offer 'pat answers', but shows God's incredible mercy and grace to those who are hurting.

I found this book to be, not-the-everday read, however, emersed with truth with what happens when one becomes trapped in occult activities, and which are nothing to fool around with. Gregory Reid puts into perspective what happens when one becomes so deeply emersed with the "dark side" and yet wants out but desperately needs supernatural help to do so. His book shows the persistance of the faithful outside influences which drew him out of the counterfeits, and into the Truth of Christianity--God's saving Grace. Nobody's Angel is a powerful testimony and I highly recommend this book to anyone dabbling in a spirituality that contains anything less than the mysteries of Biblical consumption. The author describes the dangers of the occult that will cost you more than you can pay, and finding you in dire need of a Savior to release you from it's death bondage. Nobody's Angel is truly a testimony of the "Living God", Jesus Christ. Christine Rhay--Author of "VOWS BETRAYED: A Story of Abuse, A Transformational Message

I have always knew that St. Gregory of Nazianzus, is an amazing theologian, but never knew that he is a very spritual person as well (You know what I mean). The book is for sure spritual more than theological, unlike "On God and Christ".
The book is great but the english is not the easiest, I think this has to do with the fact that it is a poetry.
My favorite poet is "Lamentation concerning the sorrows of his own soul.", "conversation with the World", and "On the soul".

Simply Wonderful

I should say first off that, if you are looking for poetry like that by Frost or Longfellow or innumerable others, this isn't the book you'd want. This poetry is not always theological, but it *is* always faith-filled, or God-focused. If you are not particularly religious, you probably won't appreciate the poetry as much. Here are a few examples of St. Gregory's poetry:

Come, then, and I will speak of the beloved mysteries of God,
whatever Virginity has revealed in these last times.
Once it was, when black night concealed all things.
There was then no beloved morning light; nor had the sun made its fiery way from the east.
The cresent moon, night's glory, did not show.
But all things were jumbled with each other, uselessly wandering
locked together in murky chains of first-born chaos...

And from a different poem:

But I, I have not kept God's holy mysteries,
with a soul initiated in the way again to heaven,
but the dust's weight weighs me down, nor could I manage
to cast my gaze to light, when I rose from the mud
Yes, cast it! But midway there arose a cloud, blocking the view,
the flesh stirred up by a mundane spirit.
Many cares turn about in my heart, this way and that,
empty things, from a wandering mind,
casting Christ, GOd the Word, far off...
But now, while God provided every member as good, to do good things,
evil has found them an instrument toward my death.
What is this law for me? How am I bound upon earth by flesh?
How, as a body mingled with light spirit,
am I not totally mind, a pure nature, not totally
a dust of lesser things, but something else, from both, and both?
Therefore I wage an unending battle of war, with
flesh and soul opposed to one another.
I am the image of God, and am drawn to wickedness...

The subjects covered in the poetry contained in this book ranges widely, and include God, providence, virginity, his own writings, and many others. The book is not overly long, and is definately worth reading again and again. I first became captivated by St. Gregory through his Orations (particularly 2 and 40), but it is above all in his poetry that you get to glimpse into the depths of his mind, both theologically and personally.

Journey through a Pen

Review Date: 2007-05-23
The author of "A Man's 1021 Thoughts" writes a raw harsh mirror that looks deeply into his life and incompletely purged old baggage that curses the present and cripples the spirit.

His personal journey is complex and emotionally exhausting, revealing very real pain and insight as he recalls horrific episodes and surviving their aftermath. A misunderstood childhood is followed by a too early marriage to a high school sweetheart turned psychopath. He vilely hated who he had to be and what he had to endure for creative success. Too young to grasp theses issues for what they were, he blamed himself, the abused.

Through writing and painting with incredible conviction to exorcise daemons of depression, suppressed memories, and anger, he pushed himself beyond self-imposed limits towards the ideals of the man he wants to be.

Countless threads of articulate musings are woven into a vivid tapestry of the man's life. Poetic descriptions and creative language powerfully engage the reader, made me devour each page, and read passages aloud in an attempt to hear the author's true voice. Somehow, he believed that what he sought was hidden within, that he was on the right path, that eventually he would be understood, find joy and love in knowing his true purpose. The reader comes to believe it, too, and these convictions propelled me well past the last page.

After reading A Man's 1021 Thoughts cover to cover, uncertain that I understand why or how, the author's isolation is compelling and his journey intriguing. His private quest profoundly illustrates that the courage to act, even with something as simple as a pen, can have extraordinary effects on a man's life.

This book should be mandatory reading for every student. Many books have been written about globalisation, but most authors are biased in one or the other direction when describing the current situation, and are at a loss when it comes to developing a clear outline for present and future action. Dahl presents an unusually balanced history of successes and failures in the process of creating a global community, does not hesitate to recognize concerns that globalisation might just perpetuate self-serving interests on a multi-national level, entrusted with unquestionable and possibly dictatorial powers, but also develops a clear and convincing vision of the necessity and the possibility of merging nations into "one world, one people" by a carefully controlled, voluntary shift in attitudes rather than by forced catastophic events. There is hope!

The author provides great clarity and insight as to how developments in both technology and thought have shrunk the effective size of the earth. A compelling case is made for optimism, in that workable solutions to the worlds most serious problems are within our grasp if we view ourselves as one people and act accordingly.

Susanna Gregory is the pseudonym of a Cambridge academic who was previously a coroner's officer. Her series of mediaeval mysteries have gained a formidable following. This book is the second in the series and introduces the physician Matthew Bartholomew to the reader. There are now a number of books in the series and they are always eagerly awaited by the author's fans.

Besides practising medicine Matthew is also a teacher at a Cambridge University and his sometimes unorthodox treatment of his patients draws accusations of heresy from his more traditional, but less skilled colleagues.

Intense arguments on the subject of theology appears to be the main motive for a string of brutal murders among the various religious order in Cambridge. But Matthew Bartholomew thinks it is more likely to be the baser instincts of his fellow men that are the more likely cause of the violence. Once again his powers of deduction are called upon to solve the murders himself.

Susanna Gregory's seventh and latest murder mystery - 'An Order for Death' - shows a growing consolidation of the political umbrage that encloses Cambridge. More and more of the previous novels are tied in, evidence and narration from them used to complete this mystery. For now, it does not matter, but should the author continue in this way we may get a new story where reading of earlier installments are a pre-requisite.
This latest has Matthew's latest sleuthing finding him firmly paired with the Senior Proctor, Michael, investigating the multiple deaths of the young but brilliant upand coming nominalist Raricus, Kyrkus, his and his junior proctor Walcote. The mystery uses several potential motives behind the murders, from philosophy to desperation to both insitigate and conclude each death.
Gregory has done a fair amount of research into the patristic debate between nominalism and realism that gripped the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (providing the link to the former with the arrival of Michael's political nemesis and his faithful follower, Richard Stanmore) so that intellectual debate is used as both motive and focus for this excellent novel.
We are introduced to multiple conspiracies in this novel with Walcote's shadier meetings at St Radegast's (a nunnery masquerading as a brothel which provides an excellent additional plotline for Mathilde and Matthew to delve into) revealing a new political powerbase in Cambridge which gives Gregory the chance to truly bring Michael into play as a somewhat different sleuth in his own right. Portrayed as fiercely intellectual, he is somewhat impetuous and still requires Bartholomew's quiet intropsection to solve the murders that begin to pile up. From the initial murder during a riot, all the way to the riot at the nominalist debate where we reach a conclusion, `An Order For Death' is firmly settling Susanna Gregory amongst the elite of murder mystery authors, not the least through her wonderful desciption of life in thirteenth century Cambridge. I look forward to many more installments.

Not only are Mitzie's suggestions practical, but following them enables us to be more productive, creative and effective both at work and in our personal lives. I gave a copy to each of my staff members, and they all agreed that if we made time each day to do just one of the suggestions, our stressful days would be more bearable. I knew Greg when I was a grad student at Western Washington U. while he was still writing this book and photographing subjects. I had many lengthy conversations with him then and would consider him an authority on west coast crustaceans. Now I work at the Humboldt State U. Marine Lab and frequently use his book as a reference (when students aren't borrowing it!). It is easy to use and more up-to-date with the latest taxonomic changes than many other books on the subject.

This book has got everything and anything a nascent patent seeker needs to go it alone, and even the tools if one needs more than one's own help. It is full of example after example of those who've gone before and succeeded where naysayers so often have said "it can't be done." Art and entertainment are supposed to be too elusive to define and patent; yet, this book brings to light the fact that it's possible to pin those definitions down after all - then patent them.

You can't go wrong with all the possibilities shown in this book. Gregory Aharonian and Richard Stim have you covered on so many fronts within the art and entertainment venues, you can only succeed. Even better, you've got nothing to lose. Even if you're denied a patent by the USPTO - and they're blunt about that possibility here - you won't always regret not having tried, or even wonder, "What if I had tried"?

Patenting is part art unto itself. Add to that the eclectic theories and arguments pro and con of this still-growing discipline, and you have a very unique niche of law of which to be part.

This book gives you every tool you could need as a novice (and even not-so-novice) self-patent seeker. It even gives detailed advice on how to get a professional, a.k.a., lawyer, to help you on more complicated matters best not left to one's self.

I picked this book up thinking that applying patent and related law to art and entertainment was a rather narrow focus but found the book to be both interesting and comprehensive. Changes in the area of intellectual property protection in recent years, particularly regarding the practices of the US Patent and Trademark Office, have blurred the lines of protection in some areas of the law. The art and entertainment areas are good examples where the changes have had the most effect and practitioners in those fields are well advised to become familiar with them. The book clearly describes some of the most ambiguous areas and does an excellent job of describing why and when some forms of intellectual property protection may be more suitable than others. It also deals concretely with the issue of costs and - egads - when someone might actually want to retain an attorney. My quibbles with the book are minor. Patent infringement cases do not necessarily cost $500,000 to prosecute and many cases involving inventions with modest commercial success are resolved at much less cost. Also, in terms of the efficacy of protection, nothing beats a timely registered copyright in terms of recovery for time and cost expended. But these are my opinions and others may (and probably do) disagree. In any case, the candid and practical guidance in this book will be of interest to anyone working in the creative fields irrespective of whether they have invented new ways to create art, designed bigger and better inflatable dolls, or developed new designs for clothing and accessories.

Simply put, this manual is an excellent guide to writing philosophy papers. The manual elucidates the systematic procedures for writing book reports, expository writing, and persuasive writing. It has a great section on grammar, research techniques, how to spot fallacies, principles of argument, and much more. One of the best tips in the manual was, "write philosophy as if you are writing for the travel section of a newspaper." At the end, it has a great chapter on ethics and information on philosophers.

As a graduate student in philosophy, I whole-heartedly recommend this manual to all who want to write sound papers in philosophy.

Professor Graybosch and his co-authors have

done a tremendous service for all of us who teach for a living. It is hard to find anything negative to say about this book. All of the obvious structural and functional aspects of student writing are covered in detail.Common errors in philosophy student writing are also discussed.Dr. Graybosch gives some of the more obscure
errors as well some of the more common ones, like the use of first or second person.A valuable section on informal reasoning defines and describes all of the common logical fallacies. The book is written in plain language, and yet no stone has been left unturned.Especially useful is the chapter on "Citing Sources." Dr. Graybosch writes from a tremendous base of his own knowledge and experience..He has "seen it all" in student papers and he has given the rest of a pearl of great price. His book contains everything I have ever said to students about good writing, and more. This book is truly a "bible" of its genre. All future efforts along this line will be judged against this book.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.I wish this book was

available back in 1988 when I taught my first intro. class as a young Ph.D. student.I especially recommend the book to grad. student lecturers,ABDs,and part-time instructors.
