A "Must Have" For All Barn LoversReview Date: 2001-06-29
Mr. Huber's new material as presented in the chapter Introduction to the Second Edition and in the Appendices C. New Checklist of Dutch Barns and D. Huber's responses to Fitchen's text and the Glossary have made this second edition even more valuable than the first edition to the NWDB enthusiast. The leaving intact of the original edition gives the new barn researcher a chance to own the best of both worlds.
Mr. Huber's description of the five fundamental forms of NWDBs along with all of the exceptions and regional variances may possibly bring to the forefront hitherto undocumented barns. As Mr. Huber points out, there are more altered than unaltered barns and knowing a lot of the possibilities will aid NWDB enthusiasts.
I strongly recommend this second edition as required reading for serious NWDB lovers and barn lovers in general.

Spritual more than theologicalReview Date: 2006-09-13
The book is great but the english is not the easiest, I think this has to do with the fact that it is a poetry.
My favorite poet is "Lamentation concerning the sorrows of his own soul.", "conversation with the World", and "On the soul".
Simply WonderfulReview Date: 2005-07-14
Come, then, and I will speak of the beloved mysteries of God,
whatever Virginity has revealed in these last times.
Once it was, when black night concealed all things.
There was then no beloved morning light; nor had the sun made its fiery way from the east.
The cresent moon, night's glory, did not show.
But all things were jumbled with each other, uselessly wandering
locked together in murky chains of first-born chaos...
And from a different poem:
But I, I have not kept God's holy mysteries,
with a soul initiated in the way again to heaven,
but the dust's weight weighs me down, nor could I manage
to cast my gaze to light, when I rose from the mud
Yes, cast it! But midway there arose a cloud, blocking the view,
the flesh stirred up by a mundane spirit.
Many cares turn about in my heart, this way and that,
empty things, from a wandering mind,
casting Christ, GOd the Word, far off...
But now, while God provided every member as good, to do good things,
evil has found them an instrument toward my death.
What is this law for me? How am I bound upon earth by flesh?
How, as a body mingled with light spirit,
am I not totally mind, a pure nature, not totally
a dust of lesser things, but something else, from both, and both?
Therefore I wage an unending battle of war, with
flesh and soul opposed to one another.
I am the image of God, and am drawn to wickedness...
The subjects covered in the poetry contained in this book ranges widely, and include God, providence, virginity, his own writings, and many others. The book is not overly long, and is definately worth reading again and again. I first became captivated by St. Gregory through his Orations (particularly 2 and 40), but it is above all in his poetry that you get to glimpse into the depths of his mind, both theologically and personally.

Journey through a PenReview Date: 2007-05-23
His personal journey is complex and emotionally exhausting, revealing very real pain and insight as he recalls horrific episodes and surviving their aftermath. A misunderstood childhood is followed by a too early marriage to a high school sweetheart turned psychopath. He vilely hated who he had to be and what he had to endure for creative success. Too young to grasp theses issues for what they were, he blamed himself, the abused.
Through writing and painting with incredible conviction to exorcise daemons of depression, suppressed memories, and anger, he pushed himself beyond self-imposed limits towards the ideals of the man he wants to be.
Countless threads of articulate musings are woven into a vivid tapestry of the man's life. Poetic descriptions and creative language powerfully engage the reader, made me devour each page, and read passages aloud in an attempt to hear the author's true voice. Somehow, he believed that what he sought was hidden within, that he was on the right path, that eventually he would be understood, find joy and love in knowing his true purpose. The reader comes to believe it, too, and these convictions propelled me well past the last page.
After reading A Man's 1021 Thoughts cover to cover, uncertain that I understand why or how, the author's isolation is compelling and his journey intriguing. His private quest profoundly illustrates that the courage to act, even with something as simple as a pen, can have extraordinary effects on a man's life.

This is a Very Entertaining SeriesReview Date: 2007-01-27
Besides practising medicine Matthew is also a teacher at a Cambridge University and his sometimes unorthodox treatment of his patients draws accusations of heresy from his more traditional, but less skilled colleagues.
Intense arguments on the subject of theology appears to be the main motive for a string of brutal murders among the various religious order in Cambridge. But Matthew Bartholomew thinks it is more likely to be the baser instincts of his fellow men that are the more likely cause of the violence. Once again his powers of deduction are called upon to solve the murders himself.
Matthew moves on...Review Date: 2003-03-12
This latest has Matthew's latest sleuthing finding him firmly paired with the Senior Proctor, Michael, investigating the multiple deaths of the young but brilliant upand coming nominalist Raricus, Kyrkus, his and his junior proctor Walcote. The mystery uses several potential motives behind the murders, from philosophy to desperation to both insitigate and conclude each death.
Gregory has done a fair amount of research into the patristic debate between nominalism and realism that gripped the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (providing the link to the former with the arrival of Michael's political nemesis and his faithful follower, Richard Stanmore) so that intellectual debate is used as both motive and focus for this excellent novel.
We are introduced to multiple conspiracies in this novel with Walcote's shadier meetings at St Radegast's (a nunnery masquerading as a brothel which provides an excellent additional plotline for Mathilde and Matthew to delve into) revealing a new political powerbase in Cambridge which gives Gregory the chance to truly bring Michael into play as a somewhat different sleuth in his own right. Portrayed as fiercely intellectual, he is somewhat impetuous and still requires Bartholomew's quiet intropsection to solve the murders that begin to pile up. From the initial murder during a riot, all the way to the riot at the nominalist debate where we reach a conclusion, `An Order For Death' is firmly settling Susanna Gregory amongst the elite of murder mystery authors, not the least through her wonderful desciption of life in thirteenth century Cambridge. I look forward to many more installments.

Learn to patent your art and entertainment yourself.Review Date: 2006-10-28
You can't go wrong with all the possibilities shown in this book. Gregory Aharonian and Richard Stim have you covered on so many fronts within the art and entertainment venues, you can only succeed. Even better, you've got nothing to lose. Even if you're denied a patent by the USPTO - and they're blunt about that possibility here - you won't always regret not having tried, or even wonder, "What if I had tried"?
Patenting is part art unto itself. Add to that the eclectic theories and arguments pro and con of this still-growing discipline, and you have a very unique niche of law of which to be part.
This book gives you every tool you could need as a novice (and even not-so-novice) self-patent seeker. It even gives detailed advice on how to get a professional, a.k.a., lawyer, to help you on more complicated matters best not left to one's self.

The Essential Writing Manual for Philosophy StudentsReview Date: 2006-06-05
As a graduate student in philosophy, I whole-heartedly recommend this manual to all who want to write sound papers in philosophy.
invaluable guide for teachers and studentsReview Date: 2002-12-20
done a tremendous service for all of us who teach for a living. It is hard to find anything negative to say about this book. All of the obvious structural and functional aspects of student writing are covered in detail.Common errors in philosophy student writing are also discussed.Dr. Graybosch gives some of the more obscure
errors as well some of the more common ones, like the use of first or second person.A valuable section on informal reasoning defines and describes all of the common logical fallacies. The book is written in plain language, and yet no stone has been left unturned.Especially useful is the chapter on "Citing Sources." Dr. Graybosch writes from a tremendous base of his own knowledge and experience..He has "seen it all" in student papers and he has given the rest of a pearl of great price. His book contains everything I have ever said to students about good writing, and more. This book is truly a "bible" of its genre. All future efforts along this line will be judged against this book.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.I wish this book was
available back in 1988 when I taught my first intro. class as a young Ph.D. student.I especially recommend the book to grad. student lecturers,ABDs,and part-time instructors.
