Great primary source on Italian Martial Arts

As a practitioner of Fiore dei Liberi's style of Italian Longsword, I found this book to be very interesting and helpful. It clearly shows relation to both dei Liberi's style, as well as the later style of Achille Marozzo, and should be purchased by anybody studying both or either style of swordplay.

The Italian school shows a clearly artistic element in the growth of their swordplay (despite Vadi's claim in the "Science" of defence), both in the names as well as the visuals of their postas, very much unlike the German School of Longsword-play which visually evolved very little over time (comparatively speaking anyway).

While I do have a copy of this that I printed from the ARMA's website (http://www.thearma.com/manuals.htm), I still strongly recommend that one purchases a printed copy of this (on sale if you can), as it is formatted much better than it was on the ARMA's website. I might add that the one on the ARMA site is the rough draft for this printed copy.

I found Arte Gladitoria Dimicandi, 15th Century Swordsmanship of Master Fillipo Vadi to be an invaluable resource to a student of Italian swordsmanship. In the spirit of Fiore dei Liberi, Vadi has put in writing and especially spectacular color illustration plates of the various stances, etc used by the 15th century long swordsman. The translation is excellent and the editorial and references are equally helpful.
This book is a 'must have' for any historian or student of the sword.

A lavish facsimile of a key swordsmanship treatise

Some old swordsmanship treatises are useful only to the swordsman, but some, like Filippo Vadi's Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi are works of art in their own right. This lavish colour manuscript is one of the key works of Italian swordsmanship. Dating from the 1480s it forms an important link between the early 15th century works of Fiore Dei Liberi and the 16th century works of Marozzo, Manciolino et al.

Luca Porzio's fine English translation brings this work to life as an instructional manual in a deadly combat system. Greg Mele's informative introductory chapters add value to an already worthwhile volume. This work is a few years old, but isn't the sort of book that rapidly dates (like an interpretation). It contains sections on longsword, fighting in armour with sword and pollaxe, dagger and unarmed vs dagger.

Anyone interested in 15th century artwork, the medieval teaching process, the history of fencing, medieval or Italian swordsmanship, or just how to use a sword, should rush to get a copy of this fine work.

I read "The Other Boleyn Girl" and loved it. I then listened to "The Queen's Fool" and now "The Boleyn Inheritance" on audio disc. I would have to say I enjoyed "The Boleyn Inheritance" the most of all three, perhaps because of the fantastic performances of the three women who perform it on audio. Philippa Gregory writes fascinating literature, and the performances of these women added even more drama, intrigue, and humor to her writing.

I particularly enjoyed the performance of the woman who played Catherine. But I was fascinated by the way the character of Jane Boleyn was written. She is portrayed somewhat sympathetically, yet all along I was thinking that she's completely out of touch with reality (based on her actions in "The Other Boleyn Girl"). I definitely felt that I was dropped right into the psyche of each of these women.

Highly recommend both the content and the audio performances.

Rather than reading this book myself, I was treated to the performance of three different actresses who took the part of a main character in the court of Henry VIII from the years 1540-1542. Each reader is skillful in portraying the excitement, fright, confusion, and repulsion of her own story with the king. The voice of Kathryn Howard is delightful in her shallowness, self-centeredness, and teenage exuberance of first love. These women do a marvelous job of interpreting the characters. I got much more out of the book than if I'd read it in my own voice or chosen the abridged edition....too many important details omitted.
Politics were much more dangerous then and the chance of losing your head was very real. Which of these women will go from a secluded, ho-hum life in the country to the excitement and wealth of the court of Henry VIII? Which will be expected to "service" a fat, old, smelly, bad-tempered husband, King HenryVIII? Which will be tricked by the sneaky court advisors? Which will end up executed and which will escape? Which will believe the king has lost his mind? And what IS the Boleyn inheritance: Is it the wealth, land, power, beautiful clothes, parties and great castles, maids to wait upon every command, or is it death by execution?

Your Head will Roll.

This is a review on the audio book version of The Boleyn Inheritance. Read by three different women.

This is the story of Anne of Cleves, Jane Boleyn, and Katherine Howard. Having read all of the other Phillipa Gregory books (The Constant Princess, The Other Boleyn girl, The Queens Fool, and The Virgin's Lover) I already knew the story surrounding King Henry the VIII court. This book, which goes back before The Queens Fool and The Virgins Lover to the time after Anne Boleyn's beheading and the death of Jane Seymour, to Henry's 4th Wife Anne of Cleves who was a German girl, supposedly very plain and pretty much unworthy of Henry's advances. It also is about Jane Boleyn the widow of George Boleyn the brother of Anne who was executed for treason. And Katherine Howard a girl of 16 years, cousin to the Boleyn's, who catches Henry's eye at court and eventually becomes his fifth wife after he annuls his marriage to Anne of Cleves.

All three women are coming from a different place in court, and all three go through so many changes throughout the book. Having three different women read this was an amazing idea, and worked out very well. Anne has a German accent, Jane is calm and collected and Katherine is as giddy and immature as a 16 year old is supposed to be.

The Boleyn Inheritance, for each woman, is different. Anne inherits the duties of being queen to a King that is no longer handsome and virile, he is now fat and sick and quite mad with power. Jane inherits her dead husbands and dead sister in laws duties of progressing the family name and fortune not knowing of course that her own neck is on the line, and Katherine inherits the bad fortune of being just another pawn in her families game. I couldn't imagine going into a marriage, as Anne of Cleves did, knowing that 3 wives before you are dead and your husband has the power to anytime pronounce you either a witch or traitor and off goes your head! Thank god she escapes the block, and quite literally remains untouched by the stench of Henry's heavy hand. Jane, on the other hand, gets what is coming to her having betrayed her own flesh and blood to save her own neck; she eventually loses it in the end anyway. Poor Katherine, or Kitty Howard has the brains of a gnat and a libido of a horny rabbit, she follows her hormones right onto the executioners axe. Henry, who we got to know in earlier books as a handsome brilliant and lively young king has turned into a festering obese impotent old king and he has the habit of covering his own faults by pronouncing people treacherous. The mans legacy is written in blood, and his only good doing was fathering the princess Elizabeth who later revives England into its golden age.

I completely recommend anyone who loves Phillipa Gregory, The Tudors, or just a really good read to pick this book up, in audio form or paperback. Its worth your time!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down. Although the available references for this battle are rather limited (primarily Polybius and Livy) Daly does a masterful job of combing the ancient sources for evidence of what the experience of combat must have been like for the Carthaginians and Romans on that hot day. He uses much of what Victor Hanson has written regarding ancient warfare, John Keegan's analytical framework and considerable thought and insight to weave a "face of battle" picture of the event. The work has great information on the composition and tactics of the armies and a wonderful description of the manipular legion at work. A must read if you are even remotely interested in ancient warfare.

Battle of Cannae was one of the most complete victories ever won over the famed Roman legions by any of her many opponents. Fought during the Second Punic War, Hannibal who won this great tactical victory will be forever be remembered by it. This battle set the standard of what we would regard as a total tactical victory on the battlefield. Gregory Daly's book goes into considerable details on how this event took places, forces and commanders involved and lay-out of the battle, location, formations and conditions. Daly's put considerable effort into his research and what we have here is a very definitive book on the battle of Cannae. Its also helped that I thought Gregory Daly wrote pretty well, nicely paced and clearly written. Anyone with a slightest interest in this time period should buy this book.

Over the last two summers I have paddled the Fur Trade Route from Pinehouse Lake to Pelican Narrows. This book was the perfect guide with accurate information on rapids, rock paintings, campsites and navigation. This was very important this year with the high water on the Churchill.

Beyond the guide book aspects, this book explains the history, culture, geology and botany of the region. This book is a must own if you're canoeing the route and a great read even if you never dip a paddle.

The best canoeing reference book ever written

It is hard to imagine that anyone could ever write a better reference manual to canoeing the historically significant section of the Canadian fur trade route which runs through Saskatchewan. In the summer of 2003 I paddled the entire Churchill and Sturgeon Weir river systems, from the Clearwater River to Cumberland House. This book was an invaluable resource, describing clearly every rapid, portage, and most of the campsites along the river.

Besides its use as a canoeing reference, it is a most comprehensive study of the history of the region, from the fur trade era, to more modern times.

Anyone planning to canoe any Saskatchewan portion of the voyageur's highway should read this book.

This past summer, I put together a three week canoe trip on the churchill river. I found this book in Ric Dreideger's canoe outfitter's store in Missinipe, and immediately bought it. (luckily) Our trip started from Pinehouse lake, and two of us paddled past stanley mission, then backtracked to missinipe, eventually covering some 140 miles. This book covers the whole of the churchill river in detail, while giving brief historical backgrounds about the voyageurs who used to make a living on the waterway. I followed our route in the book, and it was of particular importance when it came to rapids and portages, which were numerous on our route. It was always right on as to the degree of difficulty of the rapids, so we made few mistakes. Once I got confused in a series of rapids as to which was which and ended up running a dangerous one where we were swamped and I injured my knee. However, this can be avoided using *prudent* scouting of all rapids (we were over-zealous), and by paying attention to warnings in the book.

The book also contained information on rock paintings, side trips, and outfitters along the way where we could get supplies.
It's content is cut up into smaller trips with ways to get in and out of the river, which is extremely advantageous.

As a guide book, I think you can't go wrong by purchasing this book for your trip. As I knew basically nothing of this river, (being from kentucky), and since I was only 20 years old, I was lucky in acquiring this book. I owe much to its exactness for keeping myself and the three other people safe.

The awareness that the Celestial Messages bring allows me to more fully experience my life here and a calmness and anticipation about the afterlife. The work of the angels in "Celestial Messages" is unparalleled in human history. Nowhere on earth can one find truths which unite the mind with the spirit in such glorious detail. If you have been fortunate enough to come across this book, it is because you have been called. Listen to the message. If you read only one book from cover to cover this year, make it this one - it is a true present to your soul.

This is all the stories:

Woof, There It Is: This is when the Cheetah's arrive to Hollywood. They also start making Cheetah Girls chokers. It's a cute story.

It's Raining Benjamins: It's Pucci's 9th birthday. Chanel's mother isn't sure if she wants Pucci to have his own pet. But anyway, she buys one. On Pucci's b-day, Chanel's mother is angry because Chanel did not have permission to get a pet. And, Pucci gets upset because his father bought him a math book. It's a cool story.

Dorinda's Secret: Dorinda finds out she has a REAL sister. Tiffany. Dorinda isn't sure that the Cheetah's are gonna be okay with it. So, she doesn't tell her crew. When Dorinda meets Tiffany, she finds out she is white. Dorinda also has a meltdown. But, at the end of the meet Tiffany says: " Can i have your phone number?" then " Can i have a hug?" then " I'm so glad i met you!" Dorinda tells her crew about her sis. They are cool with it. It's a neat story.

Growl Power: Aqua And Angie are going back to houston for Thanksgivng. It's a big story. You'll have to read it it! It's a fabulous story.

This is a nice book.

Christian Brothers Academy religious studies chair Gregory C. Higgins presents Christianity 101: A Textbook of Catholic Theology, an introductory text especially for college-level courses in Christian theology, also useful for self-education among lay readers. Chapters cover the nature of theology, the concept of God in medieval vs. Reformation and modern theology, the sacraments of initiation, healing, and commitment, moral theology, eschatology, and much more. A time line and an index round out this succinctly organized, methodological comprehensive text for novice to intermediate students. "Among the more significant developments in the twentieth century thought regarding God were the philosophical discussions about the meaningfulness of religious language, the psychological atheism of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), and the creative theological syntheses produced by, among others, Paul Tillich (1886-1965) and Karl Rahner (1904-84)."

Greg Higgins has done it again. This time his work encompasses substantive theology and history with a clear and engaging writing style. As a high school teacher at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ. Higgins is no stranger to the tasks necessary to make theology come alive through the written word. His previous books showed his abilities in this regard and his latest one is a tour de force which will be welcomed by college professors and faculty who work with upper division, bright students in high school wanting to get the full sweep of Christianity's place in the theological world. Concepts, people, schools of thought and traditions all come together in a synthesis that will serve educators well as they put together courses for the inquiring, young theological mind. Bravo!

This lovely little volume is a gift that keeps on giving. Its essays are simple, elegant, soulful, inspiring. And thought-provoking. You may well find yourself searching your own Christmas memories, and finding gems you had long forgotten. Which is what this book is all about -- seeing, hearing, remembering those things we take for granted, and cherishing them anew. This is a book to feed the heart, and the soul. And it's just the right size for stocking stuffing!

CHRISTMAS PRESENCE is a collection of stories from twelve different people. Each short story is quite unique. Some of the authors received certain gifts that were an immediate success and others didn't recognize the significance of their gifts until years later. One man wrote about the traditions of Christmas that were shared by his family and how, even today, he can picture all of the stockings hanging up, each filled with unique and thoughtful items. A woman told her story of receiving a camera when she was eight years old from her Aunt Harriet. Because of the photographs that she took over the years, she became the storyteller for her family, and photography became a part of her entire life.

The stories really gave me some different insights and make me realize how each and every Christmas is special. All of the stories reflect in some way to the spiritual part of Christmas. The editor of the book, Gregory Pierce says "the Incarnation --the presence of God in our world-- is the essence of Christmas."
