Typical slim and oversized book geared towards tourists, Charleston: City of Memory consists primarily of beautiful large colour photos of the city's architectural gems and picturesque nooks. The first half of the book also has a brief historical overview and each photo has a reasonably descriptive caption.

A treasure chest of interesting articles
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.

Whenever I pick up a Bob Greene collection, I know that I am for something amazing. He covers a wide variety of subjects. No political pontifications here. Bob's forté? People. From the famous to the most ordinary, who he manages to make interesting. His presentation and observances of what was then the current climate (circa 1985), was and is a breath of fresh air.

You don't know what to expect from article to article except that it will be insightful and at times very poignant.

For me, Bob's a national treasure. If you get a chance. Check this book out. Not only this one but his "American Beat" as well.

Great Christmas reading
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-27
I read this book aloud to my family before Christmas. The book brought up many similar memories for us.

Although the cover is rather plain the interior of this book is very pleasing. The type, color and layout are excellent for a book in this price range. The book is basically two chapters, the first is about his childhood memories about selecting and cutting a Christmas tree. The second part is about his first Christmas shopping trip. Both of these take place in West Texas during the Depression. Greene blends the views of a young boy along with a skillful description of the activities and place. The last page is particularly meaningful.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Christology defines the very heart of the Christian faith. Traditionally the study of the person and work of Christ has been understood largely as an exercise in biblical exegesis or historical and doctrinal analysis. Rarely, if ever, has Christology focused on the changing cultural paradigms that have deeply influenced the development of human knowledge and self-understanding. This unique volume reverses that trend and, in line with developments in modern cultural theory, explores the interfaces between successive cultural contexts and the story of Jesus to which the Scriptures bear witness. Starting with an examination of the three main christological trajectories that have dominated the history of Christology-cosmological Christology, political Christology, and anthropological Christology-he proceeds to concentrate on the subtle and complex linkages between Christology and the sociopolitical paradigms that have bolstered the epistemological assumptions of modernity. His wide-ranging study closes with a creative exploration into how Christology might once again provide a Christ-centered vision of reality.

13 Detective Tales by Contemporaries of Arthur Conan Doyle
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-15
The early detective stories in Cosmopolitan Crimes: Foreign Rivals of Sherlock Holmes introduce some of his more accomplished foreign contemporaries. These fictional detectives pursued their business in France, Switzerland, South Africa, Belgium, United States, Denmark, Austria, and Canada. Shockingly, one French investigator even had the audacity to work in London.

Hugh Greene compiled these mysteries, all written between 1891, the year Holmes first appeared in the Strand Magazine, and the outbreak of war in 1914.

My favorites were the seven clever, amusing stories by Grant Allen - 2, Robert Barr - 1, Jacques Futrelle - 2, and Maurice Leblanc - 2. I have occasionally encountered Futrelle's quirky genius, oddly called the Thinking Machine, and Leblanc's brilliant (and unscrupulous) Arsene Lupin, but Allen's Sir Charles Vandrift and his nemesis Colonel Clay were entirely new to me. Also new was Robert Barr's creation, Monsieur Valmont, the audacious investigator that I mentioned earlier.

Two stories were translated into English for this collection: the delightful Danish tale, A Sensible Course of Action by Baron Palle Rosenkrantz, and a German mystery, Anonymous Letters by Balduin Groller. While not my favorite, The Murder at the Duck Club wins the award for most unexpected investigator, November Joe, a Canadian backwoodsman.

The thirteen stories include: The Episode of the Mexican Seer and The Episode of the Diamond Links (Grant Allen), Five Hundred Carats (George Griffith), A Bracelet at Bruges (Arnold Bennett), The Absent-Minded Coterie (Robert Barr), The Problem of Cell 13 and The Superfluous Finger (Jacques Futrelle), Arsene Lupin in Prison and The Red Silk Scarf (Maurice Leblanc), A Sensible Course of Action (Baron Palle Rosenkrantz), Anonymous Letters (Balduin Groller), The Secret of the Magnifique (E. Phillips Oppenheim), and The Murder at the Duck Club (H. Hesketh Prichard).

This collection is the second of three companion volumes. Greene's first collection, titled The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes (Penguin Books, 1971), includes only detectives that have identifiable addresses in the London, not unlike No. 221b Baker Street. I have yet to read the third collection, The Further Rivals of Sherlock Holmes (Penguin Books, 1973).

A rose by any name: For those searching for a copy of Cosmopolitan Crimes: Foreign Rivals of Sherlock Holmes it might help to know that it was also published under another title, More Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: Cosmopolitan Crimes, in 1971 in Great Britain.

ANIMAL ATTRACTION
Sensible anthropology professor Susan Markham firmly believed that it was impossible for romantic love to last. Then she met Stix Sperling, heart-stopping owner of the sexiest grin in town. To her dismay, Stix began stating that he not only believed in forevers, he'd found his eternal mate in Susan.
Susan tried telling herself that Stix was no more than a passing fancy, but she also had to ignore all the telltale symptoms of love: damp palms, pounding heart and loss of appetite. Her mind said these were merely "temporary biologically based chemical reactions"-- but her heart was beginning to say something else entirely!

Quabbin History
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-04
This is the first book I've read by J.R. Greene. It's a starting point for me in my research of the Quabbin Reservoir history. This volume concentrates on the final days of the four towns that were sacrificed for Boston's water supply. Much of the information is from people who lived in these towns, some right up until the very end. I am ordering other books by J.R. Greene in order to continue my research. Most of these books are already out of print and hard to come by.

Jerry's first interview just before the first album release
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-14
This wonderful calendar of GD events has as a forward the first known interview with Jerry. It was recorded at the Dead House at 710 Ashbury sometime early in 1967 either Feruary or March. It was just prior to the release of the Dead's first album. Areas discussed include, What is a hippie?,What is the San Francisco Sound all about?,long hair, drugs, the Hells Angels, comments on current groups like the Monkeys the British invasion, other SF bands, the Vietnam War, and of course music in general. Jerry's unrehearsed answers to these timely questions gives you a rare insight into the mind of a legend.

Good for historical perspective on the creation-evolution wars
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-14
This book comprehensively surveys the development of evolutionary ideas from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The book is sympathetic to the resistance these deeply pious thinkers felt to the implications of the most natural interpretations of what the data that they were collecting. The book is scholarly and not for those seeking a sound-bite.
