STYLE, VERVE AND A VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TO WSTERN HISTORY
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-22
As the carrier of the United States Mail along a 2,000 mile route from Missouri to California during the years 1858-1861, John Butterfield's Overland Mail Service holds a dramatic and exciting spot in the saga of western history.

Some 700 of the miles covered by the Butterfield line ran through Texas, and it is to this area that Greene brings his practiced eye. Noting that relevant historical points have surfaced since other works concerning the line have been written, Greene and his wife, Judy, researched by driving the trail. In addition to impeccable documental investigation, the pair walked many miles to personally experience this valuable portion of Texas history.

The book's first three sections document the colorful history of the Butterfield line. Next, the route as seen today is profiled, including a guide for retracing it plus some brief essays concerning events that once occurred along those miles.

Closing pages are devoted to a sketch of Waterman Lily Ormsby, Jr., who in 1858 wrote of his thoughts as he rode on the first Butterfield Overland Mail coach going from Missouri to San Francisco.

Collectively compiled and edited by Shaun L. Gabbidon, Helen Taylor Greene, and Evernetta D. Young, African American Classics In Criminology & Criminal Justice is a selection of twenty-three crucial articles focused upon criminology and criminal justice from a distinctively African-American perspective. The rather impressive list of contributors include such outstanding scholars as W.E.B. Du Bois, Lee Brown, Elijah Anderson. Eruditely written, persuasively worded, and weathering the test of time, these writings here assembled are a very strongly recommended supplement to both Black Studies and Criminal Justice reference collections and reading lists.

Nothing Like It

Review Date: 2007-07-18
I've been reading graphic novels, comics, comic strips since I was a kid and I've never read anything like Age Of Insects: Not Human. Start off with that gimlet stare from the cover - Ben Templesmith channeling every rebel that ever spat in society's face - then turn a few pages to find out exactly what it is this kid's spitting and you'll see what I mean. Okay, the story's complex and the bugs might creep you out but what really sends a chill to the liver is the behavior of us humans. Do we deserve the planet? Not according to Greene, Pieper and Templesmith. Will we hang onto our place at the top of the food chain? That may be up to the story's reluctant hero, Flynn Morgan who has more in common with the insects he studies that he wants to admit. The face-off between the Eco-purists and the hybrids is gory and fierce but it wouldn't be a graphic novel without any of that stuff. What makes AOI so interesting (and makes me want Book Two to hit the stands right now) is its scale - this is an epic. And worth every star.

essential for the oncologist and tumor registry
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-17
This is not the stuff of bedroom reading, but it does exactly what it should: it covers one of the central tasks of oncology completely.
Why not buy the handbook? The difference is mainly in the extras: more discussion, the free checklists, the electronic forms, and a larger more readable format. Personally I find staging a desk reference situation and I think the manual is better suited: I really cant imagine using a valuable pocket for the manual. (For the electronically interested various versions exist for PDA).
So whats in the book? Each anatomical site is introduced with a description of the changes from the 5th edition, the anatomy and regional lymphatics (where relevant) are described, and then the rules for staging are outlined. Summary tables, prognostic factors and a liberal reference section complete each site.
There are predone checklists, diagrams and ICD codes to help those setting up registries all of which come in electronic form as well.

Students who want a primer covering social issues and sentiments of the 1950s now have a fine coverage which will introduce both high school and college ages to both the promise and the dangers of the era. From the rise of the Beat Generation and the 'golden age' of TV to the threats of war and world-wide annihilation, America in the Fifties succeeds in capturing the hopes, promise and temperament of an era. Chapters cover a range of topic, from the influence of business and economic growth and changes to political figures who made a lasting impact on American society.

Illustrated Guide to House and Architectural Terms
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-27
Think of this as a sort of Idiot's Guide to Homebuilding. If you're not already fluent in building terminology, you should get this book before you remodel, flip, or plan a new house. It's thin and will easily fit in your back pocket, so you can take it with you when you go to talk to your architect, builder, designer, or contractor. You'll you will have a much better idea what they're trying to explain to you, or can flip through until you find a picture of what you're asking for.

The book covers all major home structural elements, from roofs to toilets. It's massively illustrated, with just enough words thrown in to explain the main concepts. The focus is on materials you will see, such as doors, windows, and countertops. If you want a lot more depth, try "Graphic Guide to Interior Details for Builders and Designers," by Rob Thallon. If you need to know how to frame a wall, or know the difference between king, jack, and cripple studs, try "Adding On: How to Design & Build a Beautiful Addition to Your Home," by Rodale.

I strongly recommend this book for every homeowner.

This is the only anthology of Irish Literature that I'm aware of that encompasses the scope of Irish writing from its earliest to its most recent. It is an outstanding collection that will give a reader a taste of the quality of Irish writing through the centuries. It is also an excellent text for a survey course in Irish Literature. It went out of print, but I'm glad it's back and NYU should be congratlated for bringing it back.

Once I was an undergrad in archaeology at University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and of course, this book was at the top of the must-read book list handed by Dr Kevin Greene himself. As a lecturer, he was always extremely approacheable and helpful, and so was his book! If you are an undergraduate student in archaeology at university, or simply interested in the subject, this book is a must read; it will get you started with the subject, and get you going a loooong way!
