My daughter was one of those babies who literally screamed up to 8 hours a day, for the first 3 months of life. After a few weeks of this, we needed new suggestions, and this book has lots of great ideas. Put the baby seat on top the running dryer, reggae music (mine liked ziggy marley), dance with baby. TAKE A BREAK. Put baby somewhere safe and go outside for 5 or 10 minutes. Each idea is like 2 paragraphs, perfect for trying to "read" while holding a screaming infant. :)

This is an awesome book for people dealing with colicky babies. You will not regret purchasing it.

FANTASTIC AND A LIFE SAVER!

I must say that my husband and I would have had a much harder few years with our baby if we hadn't read this book. It gave us so many (hence the title) tricks for calming down babies. It included everything from watching the dryer to turning on the vacuum cleaner. Thank you, Diana Greene, for writing such a helpful book, and I hope Amazon.com will resupply this book for all the other moms and dads who need some advice!

We bought this book as desperate parents of a colicky newborn. We tried many of the suggestions to varied results. Once Cassie was about 7 months old and we were reading this book desperately, she reached out and grabbed the book and was content for nearly a quarter of an hour!! She is now 16 months and it is her favorite book. There is a baby on the cover and lots of drawings and diagrams inside which endlessly fascinate her. The little square shape is just perfect for her little hands. None of the pages are ripped (unlike every other paper book she owns). What a find! Worth every penny

I *love* this book- the story of the grumpy kitty who is momentarily displaced in his little girl's life by a new teddy bear. Teaches sharing and tolerance, and the art is wonderful. I've given copies to most of the new moms I know, plus reserved a copy for myself.

A darling book for cat and teddy lovers as well as children.

Preparing for the Jumps

Reviewer: Gwen Richtermeyer, Ph.D.

If having knowledge about a situation better prepares you to be successful in that encounter, then Clearing the Hurdles is a must-read for women entrepreneurs eager to grow their businesses. Knowing what lies ahead, including the stereotypical beliefs that many in the venture capital industry hold about women, is a giant step in our knowledge base about why women continue to lag behind men in creating and sustaining high-growth businesses.

Broadly speaking, the hurdles to be faced can be clustered under the umbrella of capitals - human, social, and financial. The authors identify seven specific, major hurdles which speak to the entrepreneur's desire, education, training, management and financial knowledge and skills, strategic orientation, social and funding networks and financial resources. By reflecting upon her assets as well as understanding her areas for improvement, the woman entrepreneur will be better able to counter these hurdles as they come up in capitalizing and growing the business.

Clearing the Hurdles is not a passive book, however. In addition to mapping the terrain and identifying the hurdles, the authors provide illustrative vignettes that bring realism to the issues that are often missing from research-based academic work. And, the authors don't stop there; they provide workable strategies to help women entrepreneurs think through the issue and get over the hurdle.

As a gender scholar, I was particularly interested in whether and how the book would address gender bias. While the authors do not espouse a specific gender theory to guide their explanations of why women continue to face these specific hurdles, they suggest a number of possible gender theories, including social psychological, social construction, sociobiology, and social networks. By using these illustrative theories, the authors are able to debunk some of the myths concerning women and their associated capitals.

Clearing the Hurdles has value not only for women entrepreneurs, but for angels and venture capitalists that could benefit from seeing themselves through the eyes of their clients. By acknowledging their beliefs and understanding that they are instrumental in setting the bar heights, they will see more deals and create diversity in their portfolios that benefits all.

I wish this book had been written 10 years ago! Not before I started my business; but after it was up and running and I knew it had possibilities for growth. It would have saved me a lot of time as I floundered around trying to learn about financing ventures. What seems so simple to answer now (Should I look for debt or equity financing?) took ages because my knowledge base was at Square One.

I read "Hurdles" because it addresses my current passion-helping women entrepreneurs who want to grow their businesses. But the book delivers so much more. It is, in fact, a compendium on both entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial financing. In order to explain their premises, the authors lay out solid information and data about entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship-males and females.

Because five researchers with strong academic credentials wrote it, I prepared myself for heavy reading. I was pleasantly surprised to find an eminently readable text. This book will be accessible to every entrepreneur trying to understand the money equation and growth strategies.

But I really think this book should be required reading for everyone who teaches in business school. In my own search for knowledge and skills to grow my business, I got my MBA. I am sad to say that none of my instructors understood entrepreneurship. Some knew they didn't know; most thought new ventures are smaller versions of large corporations. While this book would not be a substitute for a deeper understanding, it certainly would introduce them to the real differences.

Authors' credibility speaks volumes

Here, in one book, you will find the collective wisdom of five leading academics on the subject of women entrepreneurs and high growth businesses.
This incredibly well-researched book is the culmination of years of work on the gold standard of studies of women in business called "The Diana Project".
While women entrepreneurs have forged their own path and now account for over 50% of all new business start ups, issues still remain around perceptions and misconceptions of women in business by those who control purchasing and funding decisions. This book provides a road map for navigating these issues, while at the same time it holds a mirror up to everyone by laying out facts and case studies regarding the hurdles women face in breaking some of the last barriers to acheiving full economic parity.

My children and I very much enjoyed this book of big desserts. This delightful story of a President who requires larger and larger desserts each night really captured my children's imaginations. We read it three or four times just the first day. My seven year old was excited to read it herself to the rest of us. It continues to be a popular request at bedtime with all my children ages 3,5 & 7.

Uniquely Informative Pregnancy Book

Review Date: 2008-05-12
Highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know up-to-date and accurate info. I've read a lot of the pregnancy books out there, and most of them cover the same stuff in the same way. This one takes a different angle and doing so teaches you a whole lot more about what is going on and what to expect or ask.

As an epidemiologist myself, I felt reassured by recognizing that much of the literature he references for topics I already knew about (the nutrition) is very recent and from good studies. I learned a lot from this book and felt like I had better knowledge on what to ask my doctor and what to be concerned about.

Also, though it has tons of detail in it, the author writes very clearly, succinctly, and in a friendly voice, making it easy to take it all in.
His chapters are useful post-partum too, especially the breastfeeding and maintaining sexuality chapters.

There is an astonishing amount of information in this book. It's written intelligently but it's also written to be very accessible to the lay person. The layout will remind you a little of the Magic School Bus books -- there's a main text but also many interesting little sidebar boxes with "pregnancy pointers," "partner pointers," and the like. It has solid, well-documented information about the roles of nutrition, de-stressing your life, and exercise and even includes an excellent section on sexuality during and after pregnancy. Best of all is the attitude of the book -- an informed patient is a happy patient, an asset to her health care provider, and a partner in her own health care. Better, the book's view is that a pregnant woman can have control over the symptoms that a lot of us are just told are a "normal" concomitant of pregnancy (when else in our lives, except for menopause, are we told symptoms like vomiting and insomnia are normal and to just live with them??) Greene debunks myths, shares his vast knowledge of research, and shows you how to apply his ideas in an overall program that will make for a safer, healthier pregnancy (and for a healthier lifestyle after the kid comes). The book might be a little too packed with info to read cover to cover if reading isn't your thing, but it has an excellent index and can be used as a reference (although he encourages you to dive in with his entire program, which would really benefit anyone, pregnant or not).

Review Date: 2002-03-05
There are plenty of books that tell you what to do when a baby comes, but this is the only that I found that gave me an idea of what I could expect to feel like as a new father. As a husband, as a father, as a person inhabiting the planet, Bob Greene very simply describes how his life and outlook are changing during the first year of his daughter's life. He is surprised by what he can and can't do, remarks how his wife's focus has changed. As a reporter, he is surprised to find how his view of the world is different now that he has a small life in his charge.
Some of it is very funny: the helplessness he feels when his daughter first arrives home and how woefully unprepared they are (versus what they thought the instant before). Other parts of it are coldly chilling: Bob Greene's feelings about the mysterious Tylenol Killer anonymously killing people in the Chicagoland area mirrored my own concerns when I heard about the shootings at Columbine High School. Fatherly concern can only go so far and what happens when it's not enough?
My son is almost three years old now and my memories of the first year of his life are melting together into some generic feelings and a handful of anecdotes. However, I have a journal of my son's first year to look back on. That was the most wonderful thing about this book. Bob Greene is a professional writer, but this book made me feel like I could do something similar for my son and - surprisingly - it wasn't all that hard to jot down a little bit here and there as time permitted.
I like to think Bob Greene looks back at this book the same way I look back at my journal.

The new edition of Harriet Lane is an excellent buy. Concise, up-to-date and precise, it is an essential ward rounds and on call book for all pediatricians.
However, I would suggest two improvements to the publishers:
Better binding (considering how often the book is used) and a slightly darker print-the current one looks faded already, though the font is very user-friendly.

I first used the Harriet Lane Handbook during my pediatric rotation in my 3rd year of med school in 1981 (?10th edition), & I still use it (16th edition) in my busy pediatric surgical practice. It is especially useful for med students, pediatric residents, other residents (eg, surgical) when rotating through pediatric services, & practicing pediatricians & other pediatric specialists.

The section I use most frequently is the formulary of drug doses. Physicians treating adults generally memorize the one dose of each drug to give, but kids come in many different sizes, so the handbook is indispensible for drug dosing indexed to body weight. My second most used section is the one with all the growth charts, primarily to check for failure-to-thrive. The other section I use a good bit is the one analyzing baby (& older kid) enteral formulas to help guide nutritional therapy.

My only problem with the Handbook is that it has grown in size with each edition. It used to fit conveniently in a lab coat pocket, & it traveled all over the hospital with me. Now it's almost too big & heavy to carry around, so it stays on my desk (& another on my nightstand by the phone at home).

If you can't get a free copy of the Harriet Lane Handbook from some drug rep, go ahead & buy it.

This book is so often seen on the pediatric ward that it hardly needs a review. I've been instructing residents for 20 years and can't think of one who hasn't used this book from time to time. Indeed, we joke that you can tell how old a pediatrician is by the color of his (her) Harriet Lane.

I must say that in the past I've had reservations about this book. The drug doses were very often conservative, and the formulary (which is the most frequently used part of it) was rather limited. If you ignore the resuscitation drugs, there are those that would find the Lexmark formulary more useful, especially since it includes much of the information that is in the PDR, such as dosage forms.

The present edition remedies the formulary, happily. Each of the sections is evenly well written, and consise, and the material is useful for the day-to-day work of the pediatric resident. Really, Harriet is indispensable, since it includes all the tables of lab values and growth curves that one uses every day. The present edition is so well written that I can hardly imagine future editions that could be improved in any substantial way. This book hardly needs my endorsement. Nonetheless, I heartily recommend it to any house officer who has a rotation on a pediatric ward.

This was the first book my 15-month-old daughter used her sign language to ask for "more, more!" Fox Mazer's beautiful story of a special father-daughter relationship is told in rollicking rhyme that glides easily off the tongue and makes for a fun read for both reader and child. My daughter, who is at the age of loving hide-and-seek, seemed to understand immediately what was going on in the story -- that Emily was hiding from her father -- and she smiled and pointed with satisfaction at the last page where father and daughter are reunited. We often read the story at lunchtime -- the time when Daddy is looking for his Emily Greene. It has become a special treat and ritual for both of us. All librarians should have a copy of this book for their toddler story times!

Emily Greene is a wee girl who likes to hide. She is still small enough to believe that she is actually hidden from sight when she sits in a chair and covers herself with her blanket. She won't come to eat her lunch until she decides - loudly - to be "found."

The artist does an exceptional job of expanding the excellent rhyming text by depicting the first person narrator as a father. He plays along with his child in a very understanding way - not to mention his fine culinary skills. With large, loose drawings painted in bright colors, this easy -to-understand, gentle adventure with a happy ending is a perfect "lap book," for a toddler.
