Take a walk down the journey that Livvie Gellar calls her life where mistakes are made, promises are broken, and ever so often dreams become reality. On this journey Livvie learns many important lessons among these are losing herself is just as important as finding herself, and arrival is not as important as the journey itself. Each person she meets in her life has a specific purpose and each person helps shape the person she becomes.
Life is full of wonderful and not so wonderful things, but never underestimate the power of friendship or love. Life can consist sometimes of the highest highs, the lowest lows, not to mention every day in between.

a fascinating bookReview Date: 2001-08-01
Within three months, five men present in the mess hall would be accused, tried, and sentenced to death for the murder of Johannes Kunze-a sentence carried out in July, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Here, for the first time, the remarkable true story behind these events is revealed: the stark conditions in the POW camps; the tactics used by military intelligence to tempt informants and turn the prisoners against each other; the one-sided legal battle dominated by a sharp young military prosecutor, Lieutenant Colonel Leon Jaworski (of future Watergate fame); and the passions and politics of war which insured that for Kunze and his accused killers, there could be no mercy.
A powerful and controversial account of crime and punishment, EXTREME JUSTICE demonstrates how-beyond innocence or guilt-the search for justice can be lost in the desire for blood-revenge.

A great supplement for a great game system.Review Date: 2003-09-06
The only real problem I have with this book is the lack of an index, though the reason for the lack of an index is a good one. They have so much information in this book you'll find the insides of the covers packed with it. All in all one of the better books out there for the D20 system.

No matter what you thought of the conflict you will understand the way it was for those that were there and how it changed their lives for ever. And in many ways changed the world.

This book contains ideas that were developed in later works by Newman. Sermons 10 to 14 focus on the relationship between faith and reason, a subject which the author would later explore most fully in his "Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent". And the final sermon is on the "Theory of Development in Religious Doctrine" , a subject to which Newman of course returned in his "Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine."
I would definitely say that the sermons on faith and reason - "Faith and reason contrasted as habits of mind", "the nature of faith in relation to reason", "Love the safeguard of faith against superstition", "Implicit and explicit reason", and "Wisdom as contrasted with faith and with bigotry" - are worth reading for themselves. Newman's brilliance has not been dimmed by the passage of time since the 1800's, and I would say he still has a lot to say to us today, when there is, arguably, a danger of religion as a whole falling into disrepute, due to the actions of religious extemists on one hand, and the writings of people like Richard Dawkins on the other hand! Newman does remind us that faith in God can be a rational choice, does not have to lead to prejudice or bigotry, and that faith involves the mind and the heart.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Cardinal Newman's thought, and in fact it should be in the library of anyone with ambitions to be a Christian intellectual!

A Fine Line of Distinction: In Search of RootsReview Date: 2008-03-06
Searching for RootsReview Date: 2008-03-01
The story, which is fiction based on historical fact, centers on Dave Benson, whose dying mother encounters apparitions who, she tells Dave, can help him discover and accept himself. They're his Civil War ancestors--Rebels and Yankees. After mom's death, Dave embarks on an odyssey through musty archives, Civil War battlefields, and the site of a prisoner-of-war camp. He muses that the Union and Confederate soldiers "were fighting not just the war that political leaders started" but also "their own personal wars."
Civil War soldiers' personal wars basically amounted to trying to survive the all-out attempts of enemy soldiers to kill them. Two of Dave's great-great uncles lost their personal wars during the Battle of Antietam, one of the bloodiest engagements in American military history. Another perished at Kennesaw Mountain near Atlanta. But Dave also becomes aware of the personal war between loyalty to a cause and loyalty to family. And his discovery that some of the soldiers were gay, like him, helps Dave validate his own relationship with Gary.
This book raises important questions, and Wooten-Green's compassion, humanity, and thoughtfulness provide the steering winds that keep the reader on course throughout Dave's personal journey.
By the way: Dave's apparitions are actually Ron and wife Linda Wooten-Green's ancestors!
