What a grand pleasure it is to read a book that is not filled with moral didacticism, whining, or political posturing. One may read these stories in safety, certain to emerge from the pages not a bit better ethically, nor worse, but surely happier, and THAT must count for something.
Grimshaw's prose is crisp and sharp. The dialogue crackles with realism. His characters are consistent and so, so life-like. I like these guys and want to read more about them-and in the final analysis, how can one praise a book any higher than to say, "I want more."

I've been reading the weekly humor columns that Grimshaw has been writing for the newspaper for years. I never fail to laugh at least once. This book collects a bunch of the best ones: Great characters and comical situations that are either true stories or made to sound like they're true in the best Jean Shepherd tradition. Each is a neat, self-contained story that can be read in one, er, sitting, making it the perfect book to keep in the bathroom. If you have two bathrooms, buy two copies of the book.

Finally, a unique voice to emerge in the sea of Dave Barry and David Sedaris imitators. Grimshaw is easily one of the best chroniclers of geek-boyhood in the world of literature. WING-DING AT UNCLE TUG'S is populated by a sublime collection of losers, miscreants, and ne'er-do-wells, each funnier and yet more poignant than the last. Bravo Grimshaw!!!

This is one of those rare books you're really glad you bought because it's worth reading twice. Buy this book! Definately one of the best I've read in a long time. This is what great storytelling is all about.

It's hard when a book is set in the town you grew up in to know whether you are reacting to the book on its own merits or simply because all the familiar places have a special resonance for you. But I think anyone would enjoy this terrific book, even if they've never been to Toronto. Greene's characters will keep you glued to the page.

A gourmet feast for the famished reader.

Terrance M. Green has delivered a crisp, profound, articulate and genuine look at life's journey. Through Martin Radey we learn of youthful mistakes, missed opportunities, and painful choices that haunt unto death, but are buoyed by the promise of redemption and second chances. Upon his death, he surveys his life and the life of his family, and the look is insightful, sometimes painful, always real and recognizable. Mr. Green has a writing style that flows in it's unique cadence, drawing his reader in at first sentence. Though short in page, his book is long in quality, style and substance. It must be read morsel by morsel and not devoured, as the reader's appetite is appeased by succulent descriptions and zestful words. Dessert is the truths realized in the story. In short, " A Witness to Life" is a gourmet feast. Bon Appetite!!

I believe this is cutting edge material. When people have been frozen in outdated paradigms left over from their early years, the material in this book and workbook will help them redecide in their own behalf how to take control of their unhealthy thoughts that do not work for them anymore and replace them with thoughts that bring lives into fruition. The tools and strategies used can take a person's life that is out harmony with itself and help that person live their bliss. It truly has helped me become an authentic spiritual person.

Must Read!

Powerful & life-changing stuff! As the Director of a Life Skills Adult Education Program, I have been amazed at the transformation I have seen in people having read this book & participating in the 10 week class. From issues of dependency, anger, loss & worry people have gained a new pespective and more importantly, the tools necessary to change their lives. It is effective both on an individual basis, small group setting or large-group format. A must read for all!

I love these books & have purchased many copies (of the whole series) as gifts for all of my neices & nephews! Amazingly, I have been blessed to have children of several different ethnicities in my family. These books have not only allowed the kids to see children that look like themselves in the pages, they also get to see them interacting (well) with kids that don't look exactly like them--which is exactly how it is in their real life (when they play with their cousins and schoolmates).

The books are great for children just starting to read & major confidence builders for those "older" kids (i.e., 1st & 2nd graders), who may be able to get through them without any trouble (it's great to see them reading the books to their younger sister or brother :).

I encourage everyone to pick up the whole set for any of the children in their lives.

MUST BUY!!!!!!!

I agree with the previous reviewer's writeup of this book. It is full of very useful information.

I bought my copy when it came out almost ten years ago, and I am dismayed to find that the authors have not been encouraged to create several more-current editions during all these years.

Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr have done an exceptional job compiling useful information in this volume. The book includes the topics of air- and water quality, use and abuse of energy - including automobiles, toxic and hazardous waste, chemicals and other factors that affect us in our homes and workplaces, and governmental policies in place to help clean up our act. It also includes information and statistics on state parks and forest, fishing and hunting, water-front activities, and other leisure-time topics.

The information is laid out in an easy-to-read format with maps, charts, and statistics in each section. Every subject has a separate scale by which the states are ranked as well as an over-all ranking. Another section listing the best and worst environmental aspects of each state is also included. If you are wanting one or two quick facts about the environmental health of a certain state, these maps and ranking charts are a terrific way to find them. Quick and painless.

A list of indicators is given for each topic (i.e. air sickness lists 18 indicators and sources), as well. These "indicators" are the different types of pollution/problems that exist and their sources. In addition to the maps, charts, statistics, and rankings, is a very informative narrative further explaining the research findings. For those of you wanting a little more information, you'll find it here.

This book is a good resource for anyone, whether you're looking for the healthiest place to live or curious about the environmental health of your current home. I'd recommend it to anyone concerned about the air they breath or the water they drink. Be warned, however, the truth can sometimes be painful (and frightening). Perhaps more of us need to be aware of these statistics.

The authors have done a great service by putting this book out. My only wish is that there were a more current index. Well, Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr, when can we expect it?

Intimidatingly researched, Kenney's absorbing account of the Falklands War's iconic Battle of Goose Green manages the weight of its subject with sobriety and pathos, if not consistent objectivity.
Twenty-five years after the Falklands War, Kenney's meticulous rendering of this strategically pointless battle illuminates with minute detail the how's, where's and who's, if not the whys, of a war that most historians agree should not have occurred. The author's passion for the subject is palpable, and his factual legwork impressive. Gathering a broad array of sources, Kenney determinedly sets the stage for the central conflict between Thatcher-era Britain and junta-led Argentina. The account begins with past Falklands conflicts, trots out the major players and sheds light on the messy political obsessions leading up to the war. With as much detail as Kenney packs into die pages--in addition to seven chapters, the book contains five appendices, comprehensive chapter notes, a 12-page bibliography and an index--readers may expect the tone to favor data over author presence, but that's not the case here. Kenney adulates Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Jones, commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, as the emblematic British war hero, and General Leopoldo Galtieri the military president of Argentina draws the author's full scorn, especially in a disdainful afterward. When the Battle of Goose Green and Darwin Hill arrives halfway through the narrative, Kenney renders British casualties with equal parts deep respect for heroism and clear frustration at its futility. By his point, it becomes evident that the hard-scrabble soldiers of 2 Para--the "Toms," here given voice through painstakingly footnoted source material--merit a greater share of the attention that (he author distributes to Jones.

A fascinating and vital, if lopsided, record of an important conflict in British military history.

This is one of the best war books I've ever read. It blends the politicians' mistakes with the soldiers' bravery extremely well. It is easy after reading this book to see how wars start. If the soldiers ever knew how badly the diplomats had failed to see the Falklands War coming they might not have fought so well. The maps and pictures are great. The war was a mess from start to finish and it took men like LtCol. Jones VC to sort things out. He was a great man and so were most of his men.

I've used and owned many other science resource books over the years (as a former home daycare owner, and now homeschooling mom) but this has been my favorite out of all of them.

Sorted by category (which not all resource books are!) this book is easy to use, has ample instruciton for the teacher and more than plenty activities/experiments to choose from.

Whether you pick and choose from throughout the book in a hodge-podge sort of way, or you use the book straight through with "science themes" this book will provide you more ideas than you can use. One of the very few science books for this age group that I've seen that provides reproducibles for many of the acitivities.

A great way to implement science in my classroom.

I first saw this book in the resource center, where I attend college. I am a senior at Emporia State University in Kansas. I am majoring in Elementary Education. Presently, I am student teaching in a first grade classroom. When I saw this book, I new just by looking at the cover it would be wonderful. It is full of so many science activities. My favorite is the unit on apples. It describes great activities to do with your student from the seeds of the apple to the color of the apple. This book is full of hands on activities for young children, which is the basis of thier education. This book is definitely going into my classroom library. I will use it for my science lessons. I love this book. Laura Colstrom 1st grade teacher

Great book for day hikes in and about NJ.

In the first weeks of owning the book, I have done 3 of the hikes so far, Governor's Mtn, Manor circular, and Carris Hill, although I was already familiar with the parking lots, trailheads through many years mtn biking and hiking in the area, I found the descriptions to be top notch and accurate. Using those descriptions and a simple NYNJTC topo map (with GPS coordinates!) navigation is a snap. GPS is practically unnecessary since most of the trails are well marked. Even though I have only done three of the trips in there, I am very familiar with most of the places mentioned there, the Palisades, Wawayanda, Jockey Hollow, etc. as I've hiked or biked there before I got this book. The book is an excellent day trip for the beginner to intermediate day tripper, fits nicely even in small camelback type devices. My only wish is they included the trail blaze color in the maps they provide, makes for faster quick reference when hiking.

I love the way this book is organized. Rather than describe a series of hiking opportunities in New Jersey, the authors carefully culled through hundreds of trails and picked out the most exciting hikes in the state. They even patched together multiple trails in within most parks so you would get the best bang out of the time invested. The descriptions are accurate and fun to read. I tried three of them so far and look forward to doing the other 47.
