Long a mainstay of America's southern cuisine, collard greens are becoming popular nationwide as it can be grown in many different horticultural zones across the country. Indeed, about half of all commercially available collard greens are now grown in Californian fields. For those unfamiliar with the culinary uses of collard greens there is now available a cookbook dedicated to this nutritious, dark green, leafy vegetable. "The Collard Patch: Collard Country Cookbook and Reader, Collards and Cornbread Y'all Will Love" is the cooperative work of Mary Lou Cheatham and Paul Elliot. The first section explains the history, handling, nutrient values, and other issues relevant to collard greens. Then presented is an impressively diverse series of 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes featuring an Ingredients list, Preparation instructions, and Equipment/Utensils required. Of special note for each recipe is an 'info block' of Nutrition Facts that includes the number of servings, as well as calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, and miscellaneous additional information of value to health conscious consumers. From Perfect Collard Greens; Spinach and Collards; Netherland Salad; and Mexican Collard and Black Bean Soup; to Huevos Collards Picantes; Collard and Shrimp Quesadillas; Collard Biscuits; and Apple Collard Raisin Pie, "The Collard Patch" is a compendium of recipes offering gourmet quality dishes suitable for any dining occasion. Of special note are the various cornbread recipes that are also featured, making "The Collard Patch" a very special addition to personal and community library cookbook collections.

This cook book is great. I'm a guy who struggles when it comes to cooking. But since I've started using The Collard Patch, life in the kitchen has become much more exciting and much easier. I give it two thumbs up!! I also have Flavored with Love. I got that one first. When I saw The Collard Patch I knew I had to get it too.
Something's got to give!

That's what I told myself a few months ago. I like to feed my family good food. We eat lots and lots of vegetables. The price of groceries is going out of sight! I don't plan to stop feeding my family as many vegetables as they will eat. Just as I am needing to spend more money at the supermarket, the price of gasoline is crazy.
A friend of mine told me about The Collard Patch by Cheatham and Elliott. This book is the answer to my problem. It seems so simple. The Collard Patch is teaching me to take a new look at everything my family does with food. I read in the book about ways I could grow food in my own yard. We went to work planting collard greens in our front yard flower bed. We put gardening boxes in the back yard.
We put collard greens all around the front. The back yard gives us as many vegetables as we can eat. We've got collard greens, turnip greens, beets, carrots, onions, tomatoes, zucchini squash, and watermelons. We even put stuff in the freezer. My children love all this fresh food.
We've lost weight at our house. All the work in the yard garden is giving us good exercise. Another thing that's helped us is the way The Collard Patch is showing us how to cook. We don't use nearly as much fat meat and bacon grease as we used to. Now we use olive oil and canola oil, and not much of that. The book is teaching me how to make stuff taste good a whole new way.
I recommend this book to anybody who needs to eat better for less.

I don't think I've ever had collards the same way twice. I've tried to cook them, and I've been less than happy with the results. Well, here is a book with much about collards (headless cabbage.) There is plenty of lore on growing, cleaning and cooking these healthful and delicious staple of Southern cooking. I am sure if I don't find a way to make them come out to the elusive way I like (cooked down, not greasy, a bit of sweet and sour) then this book wasn't at fault. There are hundreds of recipes, from basic greens a la various Southern cooks to sides like cornbread and biscuit. One thing I didn't know; pot likker (the cooking liquid) is not a feature of collards. That is for turnip or mustard greens. Collards are cooked in a minimum of water. Hmmm.

This sunny and delightful book will guide you along to the collard patch. Not a rushed introduction to the collard green, but a nice long and friendly visit to the rearing up of seedlings and growing up with collard greens in the backyard.
This is not just a recipe book but a book with lovely and fun farm stories, some Biblical quotes, recipe contributions from some of Mary Lou and Pauls many friends.
This book features many nutritional facts, fun facts and historical facts on this vegetable. It induces the reader into a relaxed, pleasant smooth ride into the country.
I read this book slowly, devouring a distinct southern flavor. It is written in a easy friendly style.A book being friendly ? You will quickly grasp the authors love for sharing recipes, stories of their friends meeting at the grocers or at church and exchanging recipes and suggestions for cooking collard greens in recipes they acquired from famous restaurants including appetizers and snacks, which was my favorite.
This is a book you will want to spend one long, lovely summer afternoon with, maybe beside a brook or under a shady tree.Although I didn't read the book in such a sweetly pleasant environment,I felt as though I had.
One suggestion I enjoyed and like to share is "don't discard the leftover liquid, instead make the easy soup", since the pot is already flavorful, you don't rinse and waste any precious flavors.
One of my favorite recipes was The Glorious Collard recipe and The Collard Green Puffs. I am looking forward to baking Apple Collard Raisin Pie.
This is a quality piece of work and I enjoyed every minute reading it.You'll love it for its healthy recipes, fun stories and joining the authors in a nostalgic look back with their childhood stories and pets.
Highly recommended ! Read slowly and enjoy.

I had read this story decades ago when I was young, and revisiting again as I am older, it was amazing to see how William Sleator writes so many science fiction / thriller type stories for young readers without dumbing down the story for the sake of the reader. This was the first of his books that I found, and I have been reading his short stories ever since. I hope to pass them along to my kids once they are old enough.
Quite unforgettable...

Writing for young adults, Sleator is a master of twisted and subtly terrifying sci-fi/horror. I read this many years ago and the story of Tycho and his demented future self has been lodged in the back of my mind ever since then. If your tastes run towards left field like mine do, you'll find a kindred spirit here.
Stands the test of time...a classic

I first read this book when I was in forth grade. It made a great impression on me. During a move a year later the book was lost. I recently found it on auction and read it again. I am amazed at how wonderfully complex the story is for both young and old readers. Certainly a story for all. Happy reading.

This book explores what every executive must know to manage the environmental challenges facing society and business. According to the authors, companies generate lasting value by building environmental thinking into their business strategies. This book attempts to show how to be good stewards of the Earth while simultaneously building the bottom line; how to keep a sharp focus on execution while using an environmental strategy; and ways to cope with environmental pressures and responsibilities.
According to the authors, the state of the art in environmental thinking can be summed up with the slogan, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." The best pollution-control option is to reduce the use of resources and eliminate waste. The next best option is to refurbish or reuse items. Then recycle what's left. As a last resort, throw something out.
I really enjoyed the many case studies included. Here are a few:
(a) In the weeks before Christmas 2001, the Dutch government was blocking Sony's entire European shipment of PlayStation game systems; more than 1.3 million boxes were sitting in a warehouse because a small, but legally unacceptable, amount of the toxic element cadmium was found in the cables of the game controls. Sony rushed in replacements to swap out the tainted wires. It also tried to track down the source of the problem by inspecting more than 6,000 factories and resulted in a new supplier management system. The total cost of this environmental problem was more than $130 million.
(b) In a speech to shareholders, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott vowed to cut energy use by 30 percent; to use 100 percent renewable energy (from sources like wind farms and solar panels); and to double the fuel efficiency of its massive shipping fleet. The company will invest $500 million annually in these energy programs.
(c) In the mid-1990s, executives at Unilever saw a big threat to one of their product lines. Supply for the frozen fish sticks business was at risk because the oceans were running out of fish. In partnership with World Wildlife Fund, the company set up the Marine Stewardship Council, an independent body to promote sustainable fisheries around the world. The Council certifies fisheries where the total catch is limited so that fish populations do not diminish over time. To create specific incentives for fishermen to seek certification, Unilever committed to buying 100 percent of its fish from sustainable sources by 2005.
(d) Over the last 15 years, chemical giant DuPont has cut its contribution to global warming by 72 percent. Half of the cuts came from changing one process: the production of adipic acid. This modification eliminated emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas that causes far more warming than carbon dioxide.
(e) IKEA is proud of its "flat packaging." Efforts to squeeze millimeters out of every box have allowed the company to pack its trucks and trains tighter. That saves up to 15 percent on fuel per item.
(f) Toyota saw the Green Wave coming and responded with the energy-efficient "hybrid" Prius, a breakthrough product that enhanced profits.
According to the authors, the top 10 environmental issues facing humanity are:
1. Climate Change. This includes rising sea levels, changes in rainfall patterns, severe droughts and floods, harsh hurricanes and new pathways for disease.
2. Energy. Companies selling goods and services that promise to improve energy efficiency will claim market share.
3. Water. Companies around the world now face limits on access to water.
4. Biodiversity and Land Use. Biodiversity preserves our food chain and the ecosystem on which all life depends. It also holds prospects of new drugs, foods and other products. A key factor in the decline of biodiversity is habitat loss.
5. Chemicals, Toxics and Heavy Metals. Part of what makes air pollution more dangerous is the presence of toxic elements. Exposure to chemicals like dioxin, a byproduct of production processes such as papermaking, and heavy metals such as lead and mercury can create severe public health risks.
6. Air Pollution. Significant air-quality controls on factories, cars and other emissions sources have reduced air pollution over the past 30 years in the United States, Japan and Europe. But the air is still not clean.
7. Waste Management. The EPA estimates that the 1,200 Superfund sites across the country will require
about $200 billion to clean up over the next 30 years. Under the liability provisions of the Superfund law, anyone found responsible for the waste at a site can be held liable for the full cost of cleanup, even if the toxics were legally disposed.
8. Ozone Layer Depletion. With a thinned ozone layer, the world becomes a more dangerous place, with
reduced agricultural productivity, higher risk of skin cancer and other health problems.
9. Oceans and Fisheries. More than 75 percent of the world's fisheries are over-exploited and beyond sustainability.
10. Deforestation. Every company that uses wood, paper or cardboard packaging has a stake in, and responsibility for, the state of our forests. When McDonald's realized 15 years ago that litter was an issue, it began working on reducing packaging.
Companies can and should be a force for good, leading the charge on caring for the environment and protecting our shared natural assets. Financial and environmental success can be achieved together. With the right mindset and tools, companies can handle the hard trade-offs.
This is a great book that should be required reading to executives at all levels!

This is a good place to start before getting a tattoo. We get a lot of people in our shop who just come in and basically point at something in a book. It's nice to know some history and symbolism before you place it on yourself for good. The author has good insights and a few illustrations. This is not a picture book.

I was a bit skeptical at a book with this type of format and approach but it was amazingly well done. It covered many of the questions I knew to ask and didn't know what the best answer was as well as the questions and answers I had yet to even consider. A very very useful guide to the entire process behind getting a tattoo and one I'd recommend to everyone who wants to feel fully informed before making such a permanent decision.

Honestly, for people like me, who have thought about a tattoo for years, not seriusly enough to do it, but not with so little importance that the idea is forgoten fast, this is a great start. If you have had many doubts about tattoos in general, this is a good start, and an interesting reading anyway.

This is a great book for pre-school age kids. It's a simple story with lots of opportunities for the kids to participate, saying what each picture is. I know a lot of teachers use this book and then have the kids make their own "ink blot" type images and then say what they see in their cloud. Very cute book.

Tell the children to turn off the TV and read this book. It just begs them to try their hand at making some "spilled milk" with blue construction paper and cotton balls or ripped white paper. Parents and grown-ups are allowed to make designs, too (They will want to do it!).

This book is awesome. Eliot presents an abundance of information. The information is organized and clear. Eliot does not assume what we already know, and what we have at our disposal. For example, many books will tell you how to create a mulch pile. You need this much brown matter, this much green matter, ... . That is all fine and dandy, but where do I magically get all of this material! Eliot understands this and explains many ways we can obtain the mulch material. He also does not assume your knowledge basis. For example, he will explain what and how a lugume works. This book is a constant resource for the organic gardener.
A great book!

This book on Planting Design is extremely descriptive and very informative having been written by a capable Architect. As a previous City Planner, I wish, I had such a thorough text as this when doing site plan reviews and landscaping requirements.
It would be my suggestion to a reader who is interested in the Planting Design approach on a personal scale, to dedicate some general review time of this text, gaining orientation to some of the technical terminology as found in this fine text on Planting Design. Specifically, the study presented on the early historical Oriental contributions to formal or informal gardens certainly would serve as a useful guideline for future construction of any gardens.
I found Chapter 6 especially informative in a complete and easy story manner. It dealt with Planting Design principles, concepts, and methods coupled with Oriental case studies. This is a perfect study tool for landscape design and planting; readily applicable to the home landscape.
The early Oriental uses of planting designs as described provide an informative insight into the cultural aspects of plant material evolution into today's usage. The historical correlation of bamboo to the various reflection of human nature aspects is very enlightening.
My recommendation suggests one take the time to gain an oversight by reviewing the index and gently viewing each chapter's heading with descriptions. Then delve more intently to possibly uncommon plant design terminology such as "scale", "heavenly creations", "mass planting" or much more.
While this is not a "picture" book on design, it is packed with information and data that can be applied to any scale or size project. It does not require a "castle" to enjoy the same feelings found in the early, large gardens in France or the Orient based on these elements of Planting Design as narrated in this text. For individuals wishing to spend time creating wonderful gardens, keep in mind what you learn regarding the "basic spatial relationships" to plants, structures, and man.
Although I had a some prior knowledge of landscape design and requirements when I was approving plans for commercial projects, I personally feel this text is an excellent study and informational tool for anyone interested in Planting Design.

This book was enriching. What I liked most about this book was it made me feel like I was being advised by a professional with an open point of view. This is not a paint-by-the-numbers book, but a work that will stir your imagination. It is an excellent resource for both professional and novice.
Planting Design Illustrated is full of useful information. It provided me a practical and philosophical edge on planting my next garden. I am not a professional landscaper, but I do love to design with plants. I was challenged at first by the writing style but once I became used to it, I discovered information that will help me when expanding my 2 acre meditation garden in Costa Rica.
Chen brings concepts and places them along side practice. It proves to stir the imagination for those putting the shovel to the soil. If you want to design your home landscape or like me, bite off more than you can chew with a large project, then this book should be read first.
Planting design will help you create a strong foundation for your landscape and gardens to grow on. If this book had had some professional editing I would have given it 5 stars. It's a great resource for those serious about doing things with both awareness and good technique. However the content is a serious 5 stars.

This book consists of two sections: an overview of basic planting design concepts (with a distinct Chinese outlook), and an overview of Chinese garden design (with helpful comparisons to Japanese and Western garden design). The introduction consists of a tirade against other books on planting and landscape design, which I think is mostly right on target.
If you're easily bothered by English grammar errors, this book isn't for you. English is clearly not this author's first language...there are numerous mismatches of tense and number, and some English words are used in really strange ways.
Some other elements make for laborious reading. It's not uncommon for one paragraph to extend over several pages. Often an idea or term is introduced MANY pages before it is defined or explained.
There are some errors of fact regarding Western culture and values; I can't speak to how accurate the book is regarding Asian topics.
A fair amount of the information relating to Chinese garden design is only relevant to Chinese gardens, insofar as it relies heavily on symbolisms known only to the Chinese. Some of the concepts, however, are relevant to Western gardens. For example, I can see myself applying the principles of grouping trees of different sizes, using sound, and planting for four-season interest.
If designing really great landscapes is the most important thing in your life, this book probably belongs on your shelf. Just be sure to "Look Inside" the book to see if any of the shortcomings bother you.
One last note--I noticed that among the fifteen reviewers preceding me, not a one of them has ever rated any book at less than five stars. Caveat emptor.

I am delighted with this book because I am a Master Gardener and I also an expert in Feng Shui. He has mentioned the role of symbolisim in relation to the planting and I feel that is also a great part of building your planting design. This book will help you set up your spaces easily and provide just the right pattern that will suit your property. I like his easy to understand photos of laying out areas in different forms and I especially liked the Motif pattern and I plan on using that in my landscaping designs this spring. Chen has captured all of the details that sometimes are forgotten by architects in designing our properties.

As a gardener, I'm always on the lookout for good books on plants and design - Planting Design Illustrated has both. Chen organizes his material on planting design in a straight forward and logical manner, moving from basic design concepts to analysis of actual gardens. He richly illustrates his text with drawings and pictures. The design student/landscape architect will find his analysis illuminating as he derives and illustrates universal concepts from his analysis. The ordinary gardener will like the history sections, discussion on contrasting gardens and the tables on plant symbolism. I'll keep this one on my reference shelf for a long time.

I've read a few books about PCOS over the years and I have to say that this one really is the most helpful I've come across. Not only does it not repeat the same old out of date information that seems to continually spring up everywhere, but I learnt a lot of important new information, in particular that some health issues that I'd never thought to connect with PCOS may well be part of it after all. It's also given me some useful things to talk over with my specialist, including some new treatment options.
The book manages to tread the fine line between not overly dumbing down the scientific information, while also being readable by a layperson.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone who suspects they might have PCOS, has been only recently diagnosed or even those who have been living with the diagnosis for a long time and already feel pretty well informed.

This book has a lot of knowledge from a doctor who seems to know her stuff. It is helpful for me because I am getting ready to find a doctor and I will better be able to explain my situation. The book is a little bit of a difficult read, but I read it in short spurts and it is fine. Overall, it is a good book for anyone who has PCOS or who thinks that they might have PCOS but doesn't have a diagnosis. It can help someone go to their doctor and know how to tell them about their symptoms and what kind of tests to ask for.

It has been a book that I have read and read and read over the years, just when I needed some taste of the ingenuity and the freshness of youth. And the Annotated Anne of Green Gables gave me an useful look into the culture and setting of the adventure of young Anne (spelled with a "e"), especially valuable for me, being Italian.

I'm not concerning myself with the story of Anne, which is a classic and rightly so, but the annotations are often times not enlightening or of any interest or are even bizarre and often give away parts of the story, which is utterly annoying. The additional information in the back about PEI, life at the time and more are interesting, but again more than once they give away key elements of later books in the Anne story.
If you know the story of Anne already, this might be an intersting second read, otherwise I recommend to stay away from the annotations so as not to spoil the wonderful story.

This book is great if you have to write a report about Anne of Green Gables and Lucy Montgomery. This book was very informative and helped me complete my project. There are lots of interesting pieces of information about the author, the time period, and the location in this book. There are many diffrent black and white photographs illustrating the background information for the book. The pictures of where the author based her story on were very useful. I enjoyed this book. However, if you are just looking for the novel without all the extra information, you might want to get another version.

This book was writen by REV. Maurus fitzgerald, O.F.M inspired by God of course. This book gets me to talking more to Jesus then I use to. The more I pray and use this book it puts me into the prayer mood and keeps me talken to Jesus! I world give this book to a friend or family; it will teach them how to pray and will open their hearts it will fill them up with so much love! When you ask God into your life and you don't pray or talk to Him something just happens you lose that closeness with God. If you are like me you just don't know what to say. Well, with this book it will open up your mind and heart to Jesus! It will help you understand the Catholic Faith and how pure they are when it cames to their hearts and in their faith! I read this book through to the end and started over again and I still feel blessed everytime it read this prayer book.

Somehow someone overnight exchanged my good old eyes that could read the small print on the back of my credit card bill with someone's tired out used and weary eyes that don't work that well. Either that or someone swappped out my arms for shorter ones that cannot hold text far enough away to come into view.
So people like me are very grateful for visible fonts, as in this prayer book.
The Rev. Maurus of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) has been publishing prayer books for some twenty five years. This is a reprint of an edition from twenty years ago. If it is important to you to include the new Luminous Mysteries in your Rosary celebrations, please be certain to get this, the latest edition.
You will find here the regular prayers of the Faithful, including morning, afternoon and evening prayers, as well as such sacramental celebrations as the Stations of the Cross and the Eucharistic Adoration.
The Celebration of the Sacraments includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and of course the Mass, with Communion prayers. There are prayers for before and after Mass, and for a variety of Masses, including the Ordinary of the Mass. In the old days this might partially be called a Missal and more; although it cannot replace a Missal with the cycle of readings, it can certainly serve as supplement.
Prayers of the Saints are included. You can also find here Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity, as well as prayers for sickness, and in death. The commentary on the prayers is also a helpful companion. A section on Our Faith may also be found useful, if necessarily incomplete (study the theologians for more on this, including Jesus: An Experiment in Christology, Praying With Jesus And Mary: Our Father, Hail Mary and Mary: Model of Justice (Reflections on the Magnificat)!).
