Eve Bunting has done it again. This is a perfect book with a simple, exquisite story that does not preach or lecture, but reveals the heart of what it is like to be an immigrant child, with out English, on the first day of school in the U.S. That the protaganist is a Muslim child adds to its impact, and that it ends with warmth and hope is its power. Bravo!!

Eve Bunting portrays a warm look at the plight of one immigrant girl transitioning to an American classroom for the very first time. I read this book with second graders yesterday (who have a brand new student from Norway in their midst) and I think all of them felt compassion for their friend's situation. The illustrations are amazing and Ted Lewin has used his wife Betsy to portray the role of the teacher. This is truly a book that should not be missed.

A great way to intorduce counting to your child

This is my favorite counting book! Not only are the pages sturdy enough for little hands, but they have round holes just perfect for little fingers to poke through. Starting with one green frog, each page features a number in big, black type, and a corresponding illustration. One eye of each illustration is cut out, making a continuous hole all the way through the book. This book makes learning to count as easy as 1, 2, 3. The bright, crisp illustrations are set on a white background. Those illustrating larger numbers are neatly lined up, so your child can concentrate on counting without having to search for that tenth bumble bee.

This is the best counting book I've come across. The pages are sturdy, the different animals are neatly lined up so they're easy to count, and the little holes just cry out for little fingers to poke through them.

Loved the simple approach, but best of all learned Organics is not a marketing hype, but an increasing, interested way of life for many. This motivated me to search out organics, laws, labeling, government agencies and other web sites. I have learned Americans are bombarded with unnecessary chemicals, and consumerism, and we should have a choice about what we purchase. Some states are ahead in this lifestyle than others. Unfortunately, we trust the products with the small amounts, but fail to think about its build up. I am learning. Great book, and making the transformation into organics-food, cosmetics, cleaning etc. And have saved money by living a more simple life.

This book has been very helpful to me in learning how to incorporate more ways to be organic in my life/home/eating/etc.
Practical advise & ways to make a difference, even if it is only a small one.
Effective ways to go organic in regards to babies (glass not plastic bottles!, pesticides in kids), building homes (low voc paint, no voc paint), painting, eating, gardening, banking and a lot more.
Of the 4 "green" books that I own so far, this one has the most & best advice in it.

Oddly enough one of the best pieces of organic food advise I have heard that this book seems to drive home is read labels as if you were reading a medication prescription, and know what is in the item you are buying, whether it is food, clothing, cars, furniture. Then stop and ask yourself if you really need the item or simply want it. Less is best and thinking as if you lived pre WW2 helps because this was an era where people grew more of their own foods, wore clothes out, repaired items rather than toss them out and buy a new item.

While our nation rushes to war, Julianne Malveaux and Reginna Green suggest that we put on the brakes. They have assembled an important array of African American voices, and they have spoken up,themselves, with passion and with insight. I have seen a few books that have taken on the national perspective on war, but I have seen nothing as creative, as energetic, as original, and as forceful as this work.

This is not an African American response, it is a national response, and people who are not African American should embrace this as energetically as African Americans do. Julianne Malveaux and Reginna Green are speaking to our nation's consciousness in this volume. They are reminding us that we have much to think about when we look into the souls of 20 black folks who put their vision out there.

I am excited about this book from its cover art to its warm introduction by Cornel West (he thinks highly of Dr. Malveaux) to its exploration of scripture and public policy. I have never reviewed anything for amazon before but I decided to because I feel that this is a must-read book.

I would want this book in my library because of Barbara Lee's staement, because John Edgar Wideman contriubuted, because Julianne Malveaux's thoughts on shared status are important and provocative, because Ron Walters says the right things, because Aaron McGruder's comments illustrate. You will want this book in your library beauxe it is the best protest to the war that is out there right now.

September 12, 2001 and Beyond

September 11, 2001 was a day that changed the world forever. Two hijacked planes demolished the twin towers of the World Trade Center, another hit the Pentagon, and a plane full of heroes crashed in a lonely Pennsylvania field. The reality of the number of people who were killed or injured brought home how precious life is. Hearing of the thousands of people who were missing and the heartbreak of their loved ones was enough to devastate anyone. From that day forward, the world mourned the loss caused by the horrific acts of the terrorists.

In the days following the tragedy there were endless perspectives and commentaries offered, but the one that was not fully represented was that of African Americans. In THE PARADOX OF LOYALTY: AN AFRICAN AMERICAN RESPONSE TO THE WAR ON TERRORISM, edited by Julianne Malveux and Reginna A. Green, readers are offered a diverse collection of essays which cover every human emotion. The book also speaks of the changes that have been forced upon all Americans due to the September 11 tragedy. From more invasive searches at airports to additional security at major events, everyone is affected.

One of the stongest essays in this book is titled "Necessary Changes," by Gail E. Mitchell with Andrea Benton Rushing. Ms. Mitchell is the definition of a survivor. She was blessed to survive both an earthquake and both attacks on the World Trade Center. Ms. Mitchell experienced a wide range of emotions, and the horrible events of September 11 are still with her to this day. Although she is working through her pain, grief, and anxiety, she realizes that she will never be the same person that she was before the terrorist attacks occured.

THE PARADOX OF LOYALTY: AN AFRICAN AMERICAN RESPONSE TO THE WAR ON TERRORISM is a book that I recommend that all Americans read, so that everyone's perspective is understood and represented. Reading the stories in this book was an emotional, yet rewarding, experience. I was able to experience other peoples reactions and emotions through this wonderfully written collection of stories.

This book does an ecellent job telling the story of the role of George Patton's Third U.S. Army in the Battle of the Bulge, the largest battle the United States ever took part in. Not only is it very detailed for a somewhat small book, it also covers the German plan of attack and operation very well despite the subject being primarily the reaction of the Third army. A very good work by a notable historian.Recommended to anyone studying the Battle of the Bulge and the Ardennes counter offensive.

Michael Greenýs ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý is one creative piece that explains the details of the Battle of the Bulge. Michael Green has been one of the most profound authors on military issues and World War II related books. The book provided in depth information on what Patton and his third army did when the Germans launched a desperate counter-offensive called ýWacht am Rheiný, translated to be Watch the Rhine where the Nazi defenders charged through the Ardennes. Combat maps, quotes from the soldiers, Patton himself and even from accounts of German soldiers gave highlight to strength and weaknesses of both sides of the war. Real photographs and comments from soldiers interviewed at the time, including the American third army, the German Volksgrenadier divisions making Michael Greenýs ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý a great book for me to read.
Micheal Green is technically one of the most best authors on Patton and World War II related material, with his array of books already published like Patton's Tank Drive: D-Day to Victory and Patton: Operation Cobra and Beyond. All those experience gained from writing these previous books about Patton helped to make ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý better and more comprehensive. Michaelýs Wife, Gladys also contributed to his works as his co-author and assistant. As we all know, two brains is always better than one.
ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý is one meticulously crafted book with details to many fine elements of the war many books overlooked. One hundred sixty pages in font 10 San Serif and pictures describing the war that even tells what weapons the soldiers depicted are using.
ýThe most important favor that influenced Hitlerýs decision to attack the Ardennes was the Allied advance across France to the German boarder, between August and September 1944. Hitler Considered this a more pressing danger to Germany than the Soviet advance in the east. The American crew of a .30-calibre (air cooled) machine gun, fires at German positions somewhere in France. National Archivesý
Details like this make this book an easy reading for the short time that I am pressed.
The book is divided into 4 large chapters/sections, Opening moves, The German attack and American reaction, The road to Bastogne, Clearing the Bastogne area. This concept of simplicity helps the reader to be not confused with useless details that ruin many great books and chapter titles with known settings (i.e. The road to Bastogne) help the reader to feel easy with what they already knew. A great book about the war has always been awarded for its simplicity and this one is no other. The first chapter, Opening moves starts out like this:
ýMany historians and writers have suspected that the idea for the German Ardennes counteroffensive of December 16, 1944. (Know to Americans as the Battle of the Bulge) was first conceived in Adolf Hitlerýs mind sometime during the last two weeks of July 1944.ý
Simplicity and word choice made the book a breeze and without much pain to read. Its like one of the shows from the History channel, the book gives its information in descriptive narratives. ýDespite this lack of confidence, Hitler still retained the respect and admiration of the Armyýs rank and file in late 1944 till the end of the war.ý This kind of writing in my opinion is much easier to read than writing with much high frequency words and have to dig through the dictionary to fully understand what the book is about.
Overall reading this book is a success and I enjoyed reading this book very much. Now I have purchased this book and that is one of the signs of my approval of its ý1337nessý. Counted over 190 pictures to help out my reading and that averages out more than one picture per page. Almost a picture book and still provide enough information for me to take the information from the text and process it with efficiency. This book should definitely be published in hardcover and should be a collectorýs must have for Patton enthusiasts.

An All-American Story: Baseball, Mom and...Peanuts!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-17
This is the kind of story we don't get enough of in America today. On the surface, it's about a poor California boy who grows up battling adversity and, through determination and showmanship, makes a name for himself as a Dodger Stadium peanut vendor. But it's also about the healing power of family and friendship, and the importance of faith and a positive attitude. This kind of life story is getting harder to find, as society gets more hectic and we get more and more insulated from one another. How refreshing it is to read about a man who dedicated his life to connecting with people -- by tossing them a bag of peanuts -- in the classic setting of the old ballpark. It may sound corny, but we'll miss it when it's gone. Books like this can inspire us to maintain values and traditions that are sadly slipping away.

a delightful story of an underdog coming out on top

Review Date: 2004-07-21
The Perfect Pitch is a biographical portrait of Roger
Owens, the famous Peanut Man at Los Angeles' Dodger
stadium. Owens has been expertly trick-tossing bags of
salted peanuts to enthusiastic baseball fans for over
40 years. He began working as a peanut vendor at the
age of 15. In 1962 he moved right along with the LA
Dodgers into Dodger Stadium. His arsenal of throwing
tricks (behind the back, overhand, underhand,
between-the-legs) and general friendliness had made
Owens into something of a celebrity, which was
cemented in 1976 by an invitation to appear as a guest
on The Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carson.

The eldest of nine children, Owens struggled in his
youth with issues that many readers will be able to
relate to. His mother's battle with a mental illness
sent him and his siblings into foster care for some
time. In his twenties, Owens was involved in a Jeep
accident that nearly cost him his life. But even in
the face of poverty and distress, Roger Owens never
let it crush his optimistic and warm spirit.

This is a delightful story of an underdog coming out
on top, and you don't have to be a baseball fan to
enjoy it. (Although baseball fans will love the
detailed descriptions of the games). It is a story
about real people persevering throughout the struggles
of life. You can put yourself in Roger Owens' shoes
and feel his excitement radiating from the pages. A
moving tale with plenty of photographs, it is a fast
paced and engaging story for all readers.

You might be thinking to yourself...why would you want to read a book about a peanut vendor...but this isn't any ordinary peanut vendor, this is the famous Roger Owens who has thrown peanuts at Dodger games for the last 46 years and is still going strong.Roger's story is heartbreaking and uplifting. It is inspirational and engaging. He came from a very large family and spent a very tough childhood trying to find himself and help support his family who were very poor. His mother suffered from mental problems and Roger and his siblings were placed in different foster homes.Baseball and the LA Dodgers turned out to be Roger's saving grace. He began his long career at the Coliseum and moved with the Dodgers to Dodger Stadium in 1962 and he has been there ever since.Roger developed quite a following in the sports and entertainment world with his humor and special ability to throw peanuts behind his back and between his legs and hit his mark every time.Roger also experienced a life threatening jeep accident early in his career. Roger's nephew Daniel wrote this book about his uncle and it is indeed a labor of love.If you read one book about a peanut vendor make it this one.

Let me begin by saying that many of my colleagues consider me to be a "literary snob", as I generally only deign to read the classics. The truth is that I do read many contemporary novels, and while they are on occasion diverting, I am overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the progression of the art form in recent years. So often today, we are accustomed to accepting any story with the slightest modicum of character development as being a revelation in the medium of written story-telling. An author with the competence and wherewithal to string together an acceptable number of complete, gramatically plausible sentences is hailed as the next James Joyce. The state of matters is so poor that our literary canon has been superceded by Oprah and the New York Times. People will take any positive inkling of support just to silence the very real fear that we are all flailing in a time of artistic stagnation.

I was quite concerned myself, and had contemplated cutting-off all contact with the modern world in favor of subsisting on a small plot of remote land with my beloved authors. In selling all of my worldly possessions, I came across this book. I was skeptical of the diminutive size and the somewhat childish binding, but I am quite aware of the old adage about judging a book by its cover. Additionally, I had some notion, some... feeling that there was something special about this little book.

I was right.

It took only a few minutes to read from cover to cover, but I spent hours, day pouring over it. I had expected the book to contain the same worn and trite plots that I've seen before, but this was different. Inside the cover the only words written are a list of animals. 8 animals. It was a disply of such elegance as I have never seen! After the third reading I began to understand the significance of this list, though I can say I will never truely comprehend it. The remainder of the book is filled with simple line drawings, each one relating to one of the animals on the initial list. Never has there been such a radical rethinking of concept of a "novel". To find a work so groundbreaking, and so ultimately successful as this one is a once in a lifetime discovery. Every waking moment of my life is now touched by the (dare I say?) divine inspiration I have found in this book. The whimsical, almost serene expression of the turtle fills me such a confidence, and new zest for life!

I can't spoil the rapturous ending which recontextualizes the entire book, and forces the reader to examine their most basic assumptions about life and existance. All I can really say is that every man, woman, and child should read this book. You haven't really lived until you open your eyes to the world...

Oh my god, I can't even begin to tell you how much this book means to me. It literally changed my life. I first came across this book on my 31st birthday. My co-workers gave me a gift certificate to Borders for my birthday, so after work I went to the bookstore to redeem it. I knew I wouldn't party that night, so I figured snuggling up to a good book would be just the thing for me. Ever since my wife left me, I haven't had much enthusiam for partying.

So, there I was at Borders, and I accidentally stumbled upon "Pets Stained Glass Coloring Book." At first I didn't pay much attention, but as I worked my way towards the cashier's stand with my book selection, I again stumbled across it, this time quite literally since someone had knocked it on the floor and in the middle of the aisle. I bent down, picked it up, and casually flipped through all 8 of its delightful pages. What I saw amazed me, I simmply couldn't believe how incredibly delightful this book was!! So I decided to buy it.

That night was the most precious night of my life. I cried, laughed, was sad, happy, and excited. I feel asleep with the book, and dreamed of turtles and other delightful pets. I dreamed of colors, of paper, of love, and life.

Then I crapped myself. Apparently, during the night I pooped my pants.

When I woke up the poop had dried to my leg and begun an infection on the open sores adjacent to my privates. 4 days later I was in the hospital with gangrene. The doctor had to amputate both of my legs. I also had some blood poisoning, so I had to get a total blood transfusion, which my body rejected. I was clinically dead for 3 1/2 minutes.

After 16 months I awoke from the coma, and to my surprise, sitting next to me was "Pets Stained Glass Coloring Book." I couldn't believe it.

It was the best time of my life.

Janisse Ray has now written two marvelous books about the natural world, our impact on it, and its on us. She writes in an engaging low-key style that draws you into her experiences. "Ecology of a Cracker Childhood" is about growing up in rural Georgia, and about longleaf pine forests. "Pinhook" talks about the wilderness being preserved by the creation of the Pogo wilderness area (Okeefenokee, Pinhook, Osceola). Light, easy, and long-lasting in its impact. I wish we could get more people committed to the subjects of Ms. Ray's efforts.

Hello and as the author of this book, of course I gave myself five stars:) (I'd of put seven which is my lucky number but it's not how they do their system here:) I just want to thank all those that have told me of its importance and its place in our world. My wife knows a woman that is home bound and I may take her up on her suggestion, (I spoke with her by phone) to make this also audio or place it on a CD. She told me there are many people that for a variety of reasons are unable to read but love to listen. Even Poets minds must at times get expanded:) I wish you all peace and will leave you with one brief saying that is in my book as well, and that I feel is a definite truth in life.

And if love has a color, then perhaps someone out there can educate me on it.
God be with you all,
And may he also color your lives with love
What ever color that may be
Sincerely,
Chase von

Sites' Big Picture

Over the years, Sites' clients have turned to him for subtle
insights into power control technology. Many of our peculiar
projects are only successful due to Sites' tweeking. But Plasma at
Work is not only about tweeking this important technology. This book
gives the reader a big picture of the industry from an author
intimately familiar with its nuts and bolts.
I just happened to read this book concurrently with Alan
Greenspan's The Age of Turbulence. There Greenspan notes how difficult
it has been for us to sustain a rising level of productivity year
after year. It made me think that we do so at all only because
engineers like Sites take the time away from their more remunerative
professions to show us the way.
And Plasma at Work shows us the way with short, crisp
chapters on everything from metal cutting to radioactive waste
vitrification. The book ends with seven pages of plasma industry
contacts and industrial associations as testimony to Sites' decades of
work in this field.
It may seem funny to all you techies out there that Sites and
Greenspan now share the same bookshelf. But all great books
transcend their nominal purpose and find their way into the matrix
of science, industry, and art. With this book Sites aint just for
techies anymore. This "big picture" book needs to be in the hands
of the "big picture" people.

George Sites is the expert in this field, his book helps you through the complete Plasma process. He covers many of the applications of the Plasma Arc while explaining the differences between the types of Power Supplies that are used to control Plasma Arcs. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested and or studying about Plasma Arcs.

Mr. Sites has done it again. His easy-to-read; straightforward writing style offers the reader a very good understanding of how the various plasma processes work. More importantly, he differentiates the two basic plasma power supply designs (pulse width modulated and basic phase control) in a manner which gives the reader clear direction as to which power supply design may work best for his application. In this reader's opinion, taking the mystery out of power supply design choices makes this book well worth owning.
