My link to this book is from a book review by William Baue which can be found at http://www.socialfunds.com/news/article.cgi/1854.html.

"What is now needed is a strategy that is a 'systems' approach that coordinates all the stakeholder strategies at one time to overload the corporate system," Mr. Harrington. "Shareholder advocates will play a role, as will activists in the streets, NGOs in the community, labor in the workplace, and peasants, farmers, and workers in the fields of developing countries."

"Corporations will not be able to deal with campaigns coordinated at the local, state, national, and international levels," he adds. "We need to act now as investors, as voters, as philanthropists, as executives, as consumers, as activists, and most important of all, as human beings concerned about the survival of our planet, our economy, and our struggling democracy."

Let's all do this!

Chelonia: Return of the Sea Turtle is a valuable educational tool for children and a great read. I have been giving talks to kids in San Diego about sea turtles and Chelonia is a great way to wrap up my talks. Kids of all ages absolutely love this story of the rescue of an endangered sea turtle.

If your children love the ocean and marine animals then you should get this beautiful story.

Great advice for keeping your building free of mold and allergen contaminants

I've read Dr Rosen's "Guide to Mold Toxins" on Amazon.com. That book gave me my first glimpse into why some of our employees were more sensitive to mold and allergens than others. And it provided some options and instruction on how to take care of problems.

"Chemical-Free Mold & Mold Toxin Clean-Up & Restoration" takes it from there. This new book is an extensive reference for professional property managers on all aspects of mold and water damage problems. How to properly fix the easy ones, and what you need to know to make sure contractors you might hire for complex problems don't leave things in worse shape than before they started ... which can happen.

This guide has given us confidence to do more work in-house. We are saving money and are getting better results.... fewer complaints.

Management is happy that we are following green building procedures "and" saving money.

I can't say the book is fun, but it is a lot more fun than attending those boring seminars where you maybe learn 1-2 things in a whole day. This book has the equivalent of 2 weeks of seminars logically layed out in an easy to follow reference format.

It is amazing what we can now do in-house with our maintenance people. And for every day problems we can do the work not only cheaper but better than so-called professional services.

What types of chemicals are used when you call in outside help? Do these chemicals leave residues that can affect some of our sensitive employees (including a certain V.P.)?

This guide has given us a great deal of comfort in this area.

Comprehensive reference for builders, architects and property managers

As a property manager, I recommend this guide as an excellent source of information for anyone that has ever had complaints related to mold and/or allergens.

Prevention, remediation, assessment, water damage restoration, legal issues ... all covered in a well organized slide show format. Short explanations and full color pictures ... hundreds of them showing typical problems and cost effective ways to solve such problems.

After reading this book the property manager (or builder) will have a good understanding as to the types of problems to handle in-house and when to call in professional help.

This quote from Pat Murphy, Executive Director of Community Service Inc. and found on page 260 of "The Citizen-Powered Energy Guide: Community Solutions To A Global Crisis" seems to neatly sum up the overall theme of author Greg Pahl's terrific new book. It seems that the more I read about the problem of peak oil and the upcoming energy crunch the more convinced I become that these matters will need to be addressed and solved at the local level. The bad news is that our illustrious leaders in Washington D.C. in both the Executive and Legislative branches of government just don't seem to get it and are content to stay the course with the same failed energy policies that have cost this nation dearly over the past quarter century. The good news is that civic-minded individuals, community groups and enlightened entreprenuers all over this land have decided to take matters into their own hands and are going about the business of tackling these extremely difficult issues at the grass-roots level. It is at once a very scary and an extremely exciting time!
In "The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook" author Greg Pahl explains why the energy challenges facing the United States in the coming decades are not likely to be solved by the big multi-national energy companies. It seems that there is no one technology out there capable of acting as the "magic wand" to solve all of our energy problems. Of course conservation is clearly a major part of the solution. Did you know that about 6% of the electricity generated in this country is used to dry clothes? If only we had leadership that would encourage us to conserve. That would be a great start! It is clear that our future lies in the development of alternative fuels like solar, wind, water, geothermal, biomass and liquid biofuels. Greg Pahl devotes a chapter to each of these technologies and explains the exciting new developments and limitations of each of them. He introduces us to people and companies who are at the forefront of these new cutting-edge technologies. And he explains why different regions will have to customize strategies based on the available resources in their particular area. This is information that is absolutely vital for anyone interested in becoming involved in the push for alternative fuels and in lobbying for changes in governmental policies that would favor such pursuits.
I am very pleased to report that "The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook: Community Solutions To A Global Crisis" is written in clear, easy to understand language. As another reviewer has indicated this is "must" reading for activists all over the country. As far as I am concerned this book is "must" reading for any citizen who is interested in getting up to speed on these promising new techologies. At the same time it is extremely important for people to understand that there are advantages and disadvantages to each one of these strategies. Yes, it would appear that the ultimate solution to our energy dilemma will likely be a complex mix of all of these technologies coupled with a drastically increased emphasis on conservation. I simply cannot say enough about the work that Greg Pahl has done here. Very highly recommended!

It covers what communities can do!

Rather than being a pie in the sky, the book shows what communities around the world are already doing to produce energy locally, rather than just getting it from the big utilities. Rather than coal, nuclear or other environmentally damaging methods, the books covers the how, whys, problems and opportunities of communities producing their own power. With global warming and peak oil looming, this book couldnot have been published at a better time.

Forgot what you have seen in the movies about Viet Nam

Being born in 1977, my view of the Viet Nam war is very much limited to the stories of my dad, uncle, and movies I have seen on the subject. I enjoy reading about military history and found Capt. Doherty's book to be an outstanding portrayal of not only the war, but the incrededible sacrifices that were made in the name of freedom and democracy.

The book starts with a very succint history lesson explaining the events of the era leading to the war's very first battles. It progresses into how Jerry got thrust into the position as a young Lieutenant heading to eastern Asia to partake in what will be cosidered one of America's costliest and most confusing war.

Jerry's story telling ability walks the line of in-your-face and pure modesty. He captures the feeling that he truly loved the men he served with and the friends he lost.

He ends the book with a stark realization that the media would be afraid to publish, only because of the pure truth he places on the pages paralleling the conflict he was part of and the events of today's war in Iraq.

This book is a must read for anyone who considers themselves a patriot or an American.

Economy of language allows the reader to create mind pictures of an experience so many, thankfully, can not ever know. I'm a woman of that era who has never heard a man speak of his Viet Nam war experiences. Either they did not go and have nothing to say, or they went and don't feel they can burden others with the circumstances. I greatly appreciate knowing Doherty's daily routines and seeing the larger picture develop under his careful and caring observations. We have not lived past this experience and are hungry still for information to help us cope and understand. I still miss the ones I've lost there and feel closer to those still with me. Thank you for this gift.

The author did a fabulous job not only of conveying his personal experience in Viet Nam, but of putting Viet Nam in the larger context of what was happening in the U.S. at the time. It is a book that will give you a better understanding of the day-to-day reality that our troops faced in Viet Nam and, indirectly, what they face today in Iraq. While the author simply tells one man's story of fighting a war, it's a story that will add context to every news report that you see about Iraq.

After I finished the book, I bought copies for my children -- all born after the end of the Viet Nam war. They'll learn more about the history of Viet Nam war from this book than they learned in high school or college history classes.

Anne of Green Gables is about an orphan that gets picked to go with avery nice woman and her sweet shy brother but it was all an accident. It was an accident because the woman and her brother wanted a boy to help the man do the work outside because his back was hurting and he needed help, but when they sent a lady named Nancy to the orphanige, she made a mistake and told the orphanige they wanted a girl. But because the lady and her brother became very fond of her and began to like her, they decided to keep her. The woman's name is Marilla and her brother's name is Matthew. The orphan's name is Anne. Anne is a 12 year old girl with a huge imagination. She talks alot but Matthew and Marilla don't mind. they kind of like it. Anne has red, long and curly hair. She doesn't like it but she thinks it is't bad. She finally went to school after she settled in. she made lots of friends, but her best friend is a girl who lives next to her. Her name is Diana. they love each other alot. Anne uses big words and likes poems and books that have sad and romantic endings. she is sometimes a trouble maker but did alot of useful things and is a good girl. She is really good with kids because before she came to Green Gables, she used to live 2 families. the first one, the woman's husband died and she moved to live with her mothr in law but she didn't want Anne . The second family, the same thing happened to the husband, he died and the wife and her kids went to a different state. But the reason she became really good with kids was because the second familt who went to another state had 8 kids including 3 sets of twins.
This book is amazing because everything i mentioned wasn't even half of what Anne does and her adventures. I really love this book because children and adults love it. I know adults would like it because my mom read it and she really likes it, so i'm pretty sure aduls would like it. When my parents bought it for me, i couldn't stop reading it. I didn't even have a boring part because all the parts are either funny or catching. I had alot of favorite parts but i really liked the part when Anne and her friends were playing Elaine. It is a poem and they wanted to act it out. so some one had to get in a bout and act dead and the other gils would push her and the bout in the water. And the girl who did it was Anne. If you like books exitment and amazment, you will surely like Anne of Green Gables.

Each one keeps them captivated and encourages a love of reading.

An outstanding story for young children

As the father of a girl who kept the same stuffed animal for over ten years, I can relate to the story of a stuffed animal that becomes real. It is also a story that mimics religious tales, where heaven (what you always wanted) is what happens to you when your body is old and wore out.
The velveteen rabbit is a simple stuffed toy that sleeps with and does everything with the boy. Being the recipient of so much love, all of the whiskers and other markings are worn off. When the boy becomes extremely sick with scarlet fever, the velveteen rabbit stays with him. However, the doctor insists that the rabbit be thrown away as it is now contaminated with germs.
When the rabbit is lying in the garbage, a fairy arrives and turns him into a real rabbit, satisfying his lifelong dream. It ends with the boy seeing a wild rabbit having markings like his former toy peeking through the brush at him.
This is truly one of the best children's books ever written, it captures the feelings that children have for their stuffed animals. Like adults, children like to believe that their spirits live on and that includes the spirits and love incorporated into their prized toys.

Plus, there is not much knowledge or hype about Hepatitis C yet, but the truth is, its a growing problem in the States and the World that is mostly overlooked. But Hepatitis C infects millions of people, whether they know it or not and can lead to severe cirrosis of the liver and death. The treatments available now are invasive, difficult for the patient and have a low success rate. Research for new treatments is necessary.

Improving your Bottom Line by Reducing Greenhouse Gases
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-13
By Stephen Corrick Reprinted with permission...Joseph J. Romm was an Assistant Secretary of theUS Department of Energy. He obviously learned his lessons well. Hisbook, Cool Companies, makes an overwhelming case: Not only willreducing greenhouse gases not hurt companies' ability to compete, the action of reducing greenhouse gases (and industrial energy waste generally) offers the single easiest productivity booster, and among the shortest payback periods of any available to American industry today.

Cool Companies offers insights into the detailed processes by which all company sites-from industrial giants like DuPont and 3M all the way down to individual apartment owners-have used greenhouse gas emission reduction to drive many more dollars to their bottom line.

The only question one is left with after Romm so effectively makes his case is why the coal and oil companies are playing Chicken Little and screaming that reducing greenhouse gases will hurt American business. Obviously, the only American businesses they are referring to must be their own. The Wall Street Journal and the American Chamber of Commerce would be well served to get the true picture and start representing the needs and interests of the majority of their customers-whose interests, at this point, are often diametrically opposed to those of the fossil fuel industry.

Run out and buy this book, before your competitors do

Romm has done a great service with this book. There are a lot of people telling us we must act on climate, and a lot of theory on how. Too often, it is abstract and esoteric -- Romm gives practical, easy to follow examples of how the best in class cut costs; cut carbon; and boosted productivity.

If you work anywhere in corporate management -- Whether you are the Chief Operating Officer, The Chief Financial Officer, the Plant Manager, or the Environmental Manager, you need to run out and buy this book, and then read it, before your competitors do.

You'll find case study after case study of how the best companies cut carbon. From building design, to the office environment, to industrial processes on the plant floor, this book tells -- often in the words of the managers themselves -- how they did what they did. Not only the technologies they chose, but how they sold other managers, developed creative financing strategies(often getting projects financed off ledger, out of future savings for example), and obtained credit for cutting other emissions.

If you are an environmentalist or a regulator facing the prospect of a climate treaty, the examples Romm outlines show why the arcane debate about the cost of cutting greenhouse gasses is flat out irrelevant. Cool Companies save money by becoming more efficent.

Bottom line? If you read only one book on cutting greenhouse gasses -- make it this one.

The book should enlighten those equating the green movement with adverse economic impact. It simply doesnt have to be the case. Companies like Shell and Dow are realizing, the early birds will gain serious competitive advantages when adopting "cooler" operating philosophies including: lower operating costs in general, increased productivity, and lower carbon costs when they ultimately get implemented. Numerous verified examples are provided that cement what should be a common sense belief that reduction of waste (all types) lead to leaner more competitive companies.

I approached my own boss with these ideas and received a chuckle in response. Its an uphill fight out there, hopefully the more people become informed, the easier it will be. This book is a great one to hand to a nay sayer. (I plan on sending a copy to both my boss and President Bush for Christmas)

A school which has for a long time relied on its superb theoretical foundations presents here an intersection of theory with practice, a subject that must be adressed by more architects before the chasm between architects who use theory, and those who do not become too big to traverse. Buy this journal if you are an architect, and make Mark Pasnik's "Who's afraid of Architectural Theory" The first article in it you read.

The latest installment in the series of Cornell's journals of architecture raises the bar on student architectural work. Not only does this well put together journal wonderfully display student theses, its articles are well written and very relavent to the practice/study of the profession of Architecture.

Wonderful, Very Informative, Well Written !!!!

I found this book to be both interesting and informative. The section writen by Jason Tapia was not only enlightning but extremely well written. As a Dean of Freshman, for a small college, I focus my attention on acedemic journals that are thought provoking and original!! I must say I was very impressed by the content of this journal!!
