I have bought his calendars for the last six (6) years and they are all collectibles, including this 2007 version. His ability to catch the wind, and to paint grass blade by blade while he shares the love of his people from the Gullah -all of this on the same canvas - is nothing short of brilliant.

This book arrived in perfect condition, was still shrink-wrapped and sent by priority mail. The vendor could not have done better by me, the customer.The book itself contains so many of the works by Dow and others whom he influenced that it will be many weeks before I have been able to study them all. And that was the purpose of my buying this book--an opportunity to study works by master artists. What I generally learn--after careful observation of master works-- sinks in and soon establishes itself overtly; for example, I find myself more able to recognize quality or the absence of it in decorative items around me. Even my gardens benefit from the expertise that I have absorbed. So, I am absolutely delighted by the book itself and by the superior service evidenced by the seller. And thank you, Amazon, for providing the available options for purchasing this magnificent book.

This is a valuable book for anyone interested in the decorative arts, especially for understanding the impact of the respected artist and teacher, Arthur Wesley Dow within both the American Arts and Crafts movement and American visual culture. It is a book suited both for the serious academic as well as the art enthusiast. Nancy E. Greene an Jessie Poesch have achieved a fine balance between their insightful scholarly text and the beautiful illustrations of prints, watercolors, photographs, pottery and furniture by Dow and other well-known exponents of this aesthetic shcool. This is truly a visual feast, a great book all around!

Lots and lots of visual reference material. You get to see Dow's work and then see the way his ideas and techniques bore fruit in the imaginations of his students. A perfect combination of useful text and outstanding color illustrations. This is a great example of the beautiful variety and creatifity at work during the few short years of the arts and crafts movement. Arts and Crafts was much more than a heavy dark brown Stickley table.

MY DAUGHTER FOUND THIS VERY HELPFUL. WE HAVE YET TO SEE THE RESULTS OF THE TEST (TEST TAKEN 6/21/08 RESULTS POSTED 7/23/08), BUT SHE SAID THE TEST WASN'T AS LONG AS THE TESTS IN THE BOOK AND SHE WAS ABLE TO USE WHAT SHE STUDIED IN THE BOOK TO COMPLETE THE ACTUAL TEST. I GUESS THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS, IT WAS USEFUL, JUST WHAT WE WANTED. SHE THINKS SHE PASSED SO WE NOW JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.

My daughter is using this book to prepare for her CHSPE. It is well laid out and easy to follow. It presents itself in steps and makes going through the book a simple process of thirty days. If she passes it will have been worth much more than we paid for it!

I just took this test 6/21/08 and I have yet to receive my results.
I was a bit worried because older versions of barrons chspe books had bad reviews but I decided to purchase this guide anyway. Besides the book not noting that there is calculators allowed for the test now, I think it is very helpful and built my confidence before taking the actual exam. It had a bunch of practice questions, a self assesment exam [to see what area I needed work on] and 2 model tests (which in my opinion, after taking this test, are very much like the actual exam.) It has tips on how to write an essay in 30 min. and provides details on what they are lookin for in your essay. When I purchased this book I only had a month left until I had to take the exam, so it was perfect because you can cover this book in that amount of time. I'm pretty confident that I will receive my results and will have passed. :] So, yes I would probably recommend this book to people looking for a detailed guide on what to expect on the chspe.

This little marvel is of great help for people whose first language is not english.

This book was required by my High School Freshman's English teacher. The need to expand a teenager's vocabulary is always there. The book is useful and appropriate for my teenager.

I am trying to obtain vocabulary level of GRE. And "Basic Word List" is an ideal tool for this. When I encounter unfamiliar words in Business Week magazine, I try to find such words in this book. I am certain that remembering all the index words in this book will strengthen my reading skill.

As I was browsing through I noticed an audio cassette the author Miss Read and it was all about village life. I thought it would make a change to my usual reading and decided to purchase it. I have since bought 5 treasured books of Miss read's collection and will not be happy until I have completed the set. My hobbie of reading is now so much more enjoyable, I would recommend readers to try and read at least one of this truly brilliant authors books and I guarantee you will find it a light,funny and a very enjoyable read. To sum it up in the best way I can , (one of those books you will want to put the washing-up to one side for.)

Battles at thrush Green is a wonderful book. Miss Read has stupendous grasp of human nature and makes her characters alive for her readers. I just discovered this wonderful author and have been working my way down the reading list. I absolutely recommend this book as well as all the rest.

This book is about two kids cleaning up. They get into a competition over who can pick up the toy basket. Then they try to fit both kids in the basket. At last, they both clean up. This is a good book because it teaches kids to get along.

The story concerns a brother and sister who must pick up their toys at bedtime, but are hindered by the usual sibling animosity.

In American spoken English, admonition is expressed by the half-sung pattern do-mi-la-so. Such utterances appear 10 times in this book. ("Bet you can't." "Bet I can." "Bet we can't." "Bet we can.") Children will enjoy taking turns playing C-E-A-G on a musical instrument.

Oh, one more thing: The entire text is written in comic strip balloons--just in case you disapprove of that sort of thing.

I was looking for some books to donate to a new multi-cultural library that has just open locally and I was lucky to find this gem of a book in a thrift shop and portrays two biracial children having fun together.

A little boy comes across his sister tidying up her toys into a basket, he asks her why she is tidying up and she tells him it is because it is time for bed so their toys have to be put away.

The little boy then bets her that she can't lift the basket up and she of course takes up his bet and what follows is delightful romp through several colourful pages as the children try to out do each other with bets culminating in the basket of toys ending up scattered across the room and the exasperated sister trying to hide in the basket to get away from her brother.

This is smashing little book for children who have just started to read for themselves or for parents who want an easy read with their children at bedtime.

Delightful.

Excellent! Early advanced arrangements. some have a bit of a blues/jazz twist which is fun.

I love the arrangements in this books. They are not your "run of the mill" Christmas carols. Some are jazzy and others are soft and sweet. The book is marked medium difficulty and I would say that's about right. Some I could sight-read but many would take a bit of work. There are a lot of key changes within each piece. I particularly like In the Bleak Mid-winter, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, which is a jazzed up version, Lo! How a Rose E'er Blooming and Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus to name just a few. The only thing I don't like about the book is that it won't stay open. No matter how hard you crease the pages it still ends up trying to close while you're playing the song. But, in spite of that, it's a great book and I would still buy it.

Finally, a nice Christmas music book filled with lovely arrangements that are on the intermediate level! The description of this book was spot on. The arrangements are challenging and not boring or too simple. Plus they are nice melodies...not oddly constructed arrangements that have discordant notes and such. Glad to have it in my repertoire!

Cornell Woolrich (1903-1968), who wrote the original stories that "Rear Window", "Night Has A Thousand Eyes", and many other movies were based on, stumbled on writing as his life's work while recuperating from jaundice and a liver problem, at age 20. He read every book he could get his hands on during this time, and concluded that anybody could do a better job than those authors -- they "insulted" his intelligence. Even an amateur could do better. HE could do better. With one hand tied behind his back. He then set about the task of writing his first novel --which, to his shock and amazement, sold. In fact, it won a $10,000 prize. He quickly became addicted to writing "entertainment fiction," as he called it -- over 200 short stories, and 27 novels (21 of them made into movies) -- and was regarded by many experts as one of the 4 greatest writers of mystery and suspense who ever lived (the others: Dashiell Hammet, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain). He wrote obsessively -- totally out of his imagination rather than the real world -- and lived the life of a solitary introvert, in hotel rooms, all his life, mainly in New York City (Manhattan), occasionally in London, Paris, Seattle. A phenomenal number of the things he wrote were adapted for radio and television dramas (notably "Alfred Hitchcock Presents"). Hundreds of his original ideas were stolen and used by others in other formats, without his consent, credit or compensation. His greatest fears -- in fiction and real life -- were loneliness and death. He wrote, perhaps, to live more lives than one, to be (as he put it) "alive a little longer, to be among the living." But he died alone, at the age of 64, of complications from diabetes and alcoholism -- written out, so to speak, having produced little during his last 6 years other than this unfinished manuscript, which he visualized as 6 short stories, 5 of which he completed, with only a few preliminary notes for the last one. It made him sad to think of the past -- mistakes made, opportunities missed, how his life might have been different -- hence the title, Blues of a Lifetime, but he wanted to revisit it one last time, in a private memoir, not meant for publication, to be placed among his private records and manuscripts, which he bequeathed, along with his entire, nearly million-dollar estate to Columbia University, where he had been a student, 1921-6, excelling in only 1 subject -- writing -- and from which he had failed to graduate. Carefully edited by Mark T. Bassett, with fidelity to Woolrich's style, intent and pencilled notations, with many useful and carefully researched chapter notes, Blues of a Lifetime is vital to an understanding of Woolrich's art, a rare glimpse into the mind of a writing genius. It stands out, along with Francis Nevins' massive (613-page)study of Woolrich's entire body of work, "Cornell Woolrich: First You Dream, Then You Die", as the story behind the Woolrich legacy. P.S. -- It's important to note that I am still in the process of reading both books, and am only half-way thru Blues.

This book really gives you an interesting insight into the mind of Cornell Woolrich. I loved it and recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about him.

This collection of supposed vignettes into Cornell Woolrich's life shows that, even in the last years of his life, he was able to work his word magic.

As noted by Francis M. Nevins Jr. in his biography of Woolrich, "First You Dream, Then You Die", Woolrich liked to tell different stories about his early life with little regard to consistency with the known facts or with other stories that he told. There isn't enough known about Woolrich to be able to say with certainty that these stories are or are not true, but it does not matter because they are fascinating nonetheless, and can stand with the best of his stories. Although they cannot, for the most part, be classified as belonging to his chosen field of mystery/suspense, they share many of the elements of his best work: vivid pictures of "everyday life", finding and telling the stories in ordinary situations, and a knack for making you feel for and with the characters.

While it is a fairly minor point, I found the introductory essay by Mark Bassett a bit annoying in the way that it contains bibliographical references that are i) in a different format than the actual bibliography; and ii) cannot be matched to any bibliographical entry in many cases. I had the sense that this essay was trimmed down or excerpted from a longer essay (possiby a thesis, given the publisher?), but not carefully editted.

In spite of that minor complaint, we should all be thankful to Mark Bassett for bringing these Woolrich tales to print.

This book was very inspiring. What Brett went through with his painkillers made me more of a fan of him. When he quit his battle with drinking, I thought only a warrior could do that. Hats off to Brett Favre. Bill Gutman told it as it was.

This is a great book if you are a true Brett Favre fan. This is a great book on how Favre became such a great quarterback. He started off a nothing in the NFL, but when you keep trying and work hard you can see what happens. It also shows how Favre overcame the problem he had with over taking pain killers. I thought it was great to see how well he recovered from the incident and the way he handled it with the media and his fans. This is just an overall great to read for all the fans out there.

This book is fantastic. If you are looking for a book to read about a hero in the NFL, this is the book to read. Brett lays everything out for the reader. He talks about his upbringing, college and the NFL, and how it lead him to his painful addiction to pain killers. He is a true "hero"... I would recomend this book to anyone, if all athletes were this honest, the fans would be more forgiving. You can't help but root for him at the end of the book... I have given 10 of these books away for presents, and I am not even a packer fan..I am now a Brett Favre fan...
