Excellent interpretation.....not for beginners..Review Date: 2005-04-28
Whether you accept Margaret Starbird's exposition linking the Tarot with an archaic Gnostic catechism, or Isabel Kliegman's interpretation which ties the Minor Arcana to the Kabbalah, or you accept a Jungian explanation, you will probably enjoy reading Moura's book.
Moura says she is not interested in the "Fire versus Air' argument for Swords and Wands or the reversal of the `Strength' and `Justice' cards in the Waite-Ryder deck produced by the Order of the New Dawn. Nor is she interested in which interpretation of the `Wheel of the Year' is "correct". She provides compelling reasons as to why she believes most experts agree the Tarot is not of European origin, and may in fact have originated in India, traveling west via Romania (Which in my mind makes no difference as the origin is "Indo-European" and thus the argument put forward by Rachel Pollock and Joseph Campbell regarding an association between the Tarot and the ancient near East is not disproved) .
Moura does not view Tarot cards as useful for "fortune telling", but rather she says they are for divination, which is a different matter. Fortune telling implies predestination, and if we have free will, which she believes we do, then events are not immutable or fixed. Divination implies future outcomes which can be affected.
I found this book both informative and helpful, and while I may not agree with every last aspect, I recommend it to anyone who has moved beyond the basic interpretations and wants to explore further. If you want a basic volume, check out Rachel Pollack's book SEVENTY-EIGHT DEGREES OF WISDOM.

A New Way to Look at Tarot the Green WayReview Date: 2005-02-27
The way Ann Moura explains the cards in the way of the Green Witch makes more sense, and works with any deck.
I chose to use my Herbal Tarot, and looking at the Fool as the Greenman, etc. makes reading Tarot cards so much easier.
The book has card from one of three different decks that are the author's favorites. Ann Moura suggests as you read about each card, to use place the card from your deck on top of the printed card in the book....it's like hands on, and really gets you familiar with your deck.
I highly suggest this book especially for beginners and those in the Craft of the Green Witch.

Stop reading this and BUY THIS BOOK!Review Date: 2007-06-22
This is not a story that tries to imitate Tolkien, or that is derived from trite fantasy genres like D&D. Though some of the words/concepts may seem familiar, their importance and function are not what you would find in the standard tripe that litters the fiction landscape. For example: one of the main characters, the Thief, is not a thief. He is a creature of magic (though very real), a person of honor, loyalty, integrity, and innocence. And perhaps it would be more accurate to think of him as THE Thief. He really is too complicated to explain here, but he is a wonderful character.
Anyway, I can't recommend this story enough to you. BUY IT! YOU'LL LIKE IT! Mark Oakley has stepped outside of clichéd stereotypes, and tired old story telling tools, to tell a tale in a wonderful new world, using an exciting new mythology that is at once fresh & surprising and comfortable & easy to believe. He has crafted characters that are interesting and endearing, without being saccharin and sappy. The story is epic and nuanced, personable with the characters and grandiosely spanning ages. It's really REALLY GREAT!
If you're scared, just buy the 1st book. That's all it will take to get you hooked. If you're smart, you'll buy the first 2 or 3 books; that way when you finish the first book, and you realize that you must have all of them, you'll get to read a book or 2 more while you're waiting for the rest of them to arrive in the mail. See? It would pay to plan ahead. If you don't want to believe me, go and sell yourself on it by visiting his website and reading a little of it, peruse his art work, read other reviews!
Go to Mark Oakley's Thieves & Kings website! Look at more of his stuff there! Buy from him! STOP WASTING TIME READING THIS AND BUY THESE BOOKS!
No, I don't know Mark Oakley. I have never met him. I gain nothing from you buying his products, or anything else from IBox Publishing. So, that's all I have to say about that.
Thank you.

This book is NOT out of print.Review Date: 2003-12-14
Amazon incorrectly lists these books as being, 'Out of Print.' They are not.
I just don't sell to Amazon anymore due to the poor economics of the affair. After they take their 50% retailer's cut, and after I pay for shipping the books to Amazon, my publishing company winds up either barely breaking even, or more often than not, actually losing money on each sale. If Amazon were to order in proper quantity, say 30 at a time, and thereby justify their retailer's volume discount, then it would all work nicely because shipping in volume is much less expensive than sending copies one at a time as sales click through! Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't work this way. During the three years I was selling through Amazon, a lot of T&K books were purchases by Amazon customers. I figured, "Oh, well it's only a handful of sales every week or two. It's worth it for the advertising value." Well, after a while, those sales added up to hundreds of dollars worth, and I got tired of watching Amazon profit from my work while I ran in circles.
Small press is a wonderful thing, but unfortunately, in my case it doesn't work well with the Amazon business model.
So if you want to purchase copies of this or any of the Thieves & Kings books, please swing by my company website at. . .

The books are popular and they are ALWAYS in print.

Profound InsightsReview Date: 2008-09-05
And through it all Lori organizes and comments and analyzes, always with sympathy and insight and wisdom. So in the end you see how society fears transgressions against gender norms and fights to maintain the status quo, how society uses ridicule, sarcasm, hate, bullying, put-downs, cruel humor and fear to enforce the gender binary, but how really the rigid gender binary doesn't make any sense biologically or culturally, how the rigid gender binary is a denial of our true selves.
Lori talks about how transitioning isn't really about transition from being one thing to being another thing, it is really about changing society's perceptions so that society can perceive our true form.
And Lori shows us a vision of a society where we don't have to fear the unknown, where a person can be free to be attracted to that kind of person they are attracted to. Where they can express whatever form their gender identity takes, whether it is highly masculine, moderately, slightly, not at all **and** at the same time highly feminine, moderately, slightly, not at all.

Skilled writers like Ms. Girshick are needed to add light and educate the world about these very and easily misunderstood concepts.

Transgender VoicesReview Date: 2008-05-30
Ms. Girshick asks many questions in this book such as what is the relationship between gender identity and sexual orientation? Many of the answers were an identification of androgeneny. But as Girshicks point out, this terms has multiple means.
Gircheck is not the first to address this subject of gender idenity and sex reassignment. Dr. Renee Richards, pediatric opthalmologist and tennis coach to Martina Navratilova wrote about beginning life as Richard Raskind in "Second Serve". Famed trael writer, now retired, Jan Morris wrote about her transformation from James to Jan in "Conundrum".
Still, the subject of the transgener is one that is urually not addressed because it remains uncomfortable for many. Yet anyone who has been rejected by family or friends for any reaon will relate to the pain that endures.
Ms. Girshick's profound book deserves wide distribution and study especially by those who usually avoid this senstitive subject. The book has a few faults but too minor to mention. I hope the book will be read and more reviews posted.

Review of Bree's _Wake of the Green Storm_Review Date: 2002-03-02
Bree is one of the better writers in a small sub-set of cruising narratives by singlehanded sailors who go coastal cruising in small yachts. Other writers in this genre include Philip Teece (_A Dream of Islands_ and _A Shimmer on the Horizon_) who cruises the waters around Vancouver Island and Robert DeGast (_Western Wind, Eastern Shore_ and _Five Fair Rivers_) and Howard Walker Schindler (_Between Two Bays and the Sea_) who sail in Chesapeake Bay.
Just as reading Teece makes you want to go sailing around Vancouver, Bree does the same thing for Lake Superior. Bree is an excellent story-teller and his books are always lively and filled with historical information and yarns that will shiver yer timbers.
Bree's latest work is extremely tense in parts and you will probably have a hard time putting it down after you start reading (especially since the 'Prologue' is a nail-biter). The book is centered around his experience with the July 4, 1999 "Green Storm" in which his home-made 20 foot wooden centerboard sloop *Persistence* was caught out on the Lake and knocked-down -- and experiences by other boaters with the same storm. There are other exciting moments -- like grounding on a reef and tense moments navigating through very narrow channels in the fog and dodging floating trees.
Like the other books referred to above, this book shows that you don't have to cross an ocean or own a big and expensive boat to find some adventure. And, for sailors cruising in other areas, it will instill some respect (if they don't have it already) for "Lake sailors".

The Mystery at the Heart of the CosmosReview Date: 2007-02-16
Highly Recommended Book for People of All FaithsReview Date: 2006-09-22
Cynthia Avens and Richard Zelley use the apt metaphor of "bypaths" for the hidden traditions within Christianity. The creative symbol of ChristoSophia restores the Divine Feminine to her original prominent place in Christianity. The institutional Church suppressed Sophia; the authors show that it is imperative to rediscover her in the "bypaths" of the Christian tradition. This insightful book reveals ways that ChristoSophia resurrects the Divine Feminine, restores the natural world, and recovers the mystical Christian tradition.
I highly recommend WALKING THE PATH OF CHRISTOSOPHIA to people of all faiths who desire a deeper spiritual experience, equality and justice in human relationships, and the restoration of the earth.

and INCLUSIVE HYMNS FOR LIBERATING CHRISTIANS
Wonderful Guide Review Date: 2006-07-02
In their scholarly but eminently readable book, Avens and Zelley explain the important role of women in early Christianity, focusing on the two Marys, and celebrate the significance of Sophia, the feminine aspect of the Divine.
The authors also discuss the hidden revelations of lost scriptures, the role of Celtic Christianity, the history of the Holy Grail, the symbolism of the Green Man in nature, the mysteries of the Kabbalah and the rewards of walking a unique spiritual bypath...that of the ChristoSophia...which acknowledges the union of feminine and masculine divinity, the sacredness of nature and the rewards of mystical experience.
The authors' genuine belief in the spiritual rewards of walking "the path with a heart" is likely to appeal to readers of all faiths, and perhaps even those who have lost their way along the spiritual highway.

A "ByWay" on the Path of Christian MysticismReview Date: 2006-02-07
The authors pull together an interesting and insightful synthesis of The Feminine, Nature, and Mysticism,to lay the foundation for the Christo-Sophaic path of Christian Mysticism.
I would highly recommend this book for those interested in exploring Christian Mysticism..
