As a design student, I found this to be among the best design titles I have read to date. The book is inspiring, offering practical suggestions for adding sustainable principles to any design project. It is also eye-opening, exposing readers to successful design from a myriad of cultures. Papanak also explores the benefits of design education for everyone, and provides examples of successful design for every point he brings up. Every page seems to inspire a new design idea. This title is a must for every designer and design student.
Eye-candy. Needed more aggressive editing

The Green Imperative is a beautiful book. Many pictures. Very high quality paper.
I found it difficult to read as a serious book as there are places where politics supercede accuracy. "within seven and a half years the entire energy needs of the world could be supplied by...solar panels...Super-conducting cables *would* carry the power to areas with less sunlight." emphasis mine, page 43 "Finnish design... 22mm rifle.." .22 caliber (inch), perhaps? page 52
Also, a blithe treatment of the issue of economics "the timber industry generally refuses to engage in selective harvesting from multi-species mature forests..." page 36
This book could have brought Greens and industry closer together. Rather, it gives Greens more "evidence" of an anti-environmental conspiracy.

This comic is really, really good. It has an innovative and amazing art (sometimes it reminds me of "The last will and testament fo hal Jordan"). A walktrough of Kyle Rayner foe's, loves and friends; a nice recapitulation of this green lanterns career. And a sci-fi feeling that's fantastic. I really recomend both volumes of Ion

Great art work and story telling. If you are a fan of the Green Lantern this is the most recent trade paperback surrounding Kyle Raynor. It follows his struggles in dealing with his new "omnipotent" powers. Also revealed are some significant story points regarding the up-coming Senestro Corps War.
Great idea's.

This first part of Kyle's first outing is great. Kyle Rayner was one of the better creations that came out of DC in the 90's. This book is the first steps to an eventual return to greatness, hopefully. Kyle is set up to have the potential to be right up there with the greats of cosmic heroes like Captain Marvel and the Silver Surfer from the Marvel U.

Following the events of Infinite Crisis, there have been a few shake up's in the Green Lantern Corps. Most notably is the fact that Kyle Rayner isn't quite the man, or GL, that he used to be. He's been transformed into Ion; a being of almost godlike power. With no more need for a power ring, he contains the power of the Lanterns inside him, and is the key in the Guardians' next step in perserving peace in the galaxy. Only thing is, as this first volume in the new ongoing series shows us, Kyle wakes up to find himself accused of massaciring an entire fleet in space. He doesn't remember doing this, and soon enough he has a bounty on his head, and the Guardians seem to know everything that's going on. Ron Marz, AKA the man who helped make Hal Jordan a villain and created Kyle Rayner, writes a good script here for the most part, with plenty of odes to Geoff Johns' various Green Lantern stories. There's some nice twists here and there, and Marz makes the most out of a Kyle/Hal team-up that will put a smile on the faces of many GL fans. The only real negative to Ion: The Torchbearer is the art by Greg Tocchini. In some frames it looks great, in others it looks lackluster and somewhat sloppy. Despite that, this is still a solid story that will leave you wanting more, and hopefully Marz will deliver the goods.

Another collection of FUN Green Lantern Stories.
Broome and Fox were writing quality stories with keen art from Gil Kane.
My Two favorite stories were the crossovers with Alan Scott, The Golden Age Green Lantern.
One explains the origin of the Multiverse and the other is a love story for Alans' friend Doiby Dickles.
Plus there are teamups with Zatanna and the Flash.
And many GL Foes make their return appearance. Especially a memorable
appearance by Dr. Polaris in a two-part story.

The stories in this volume represent the peak of the Silver Age Green Lantern. Hal was at his bravest, most confident and resourceful; the mythology of the Green Lantern Corps was at its most developed; the stories were imaginative and wide-ranging; and the Gil Kane artwork was at its most sophisticated and dynamic. The stakes were high in many of these stories.
The next volume will begin Jordan's long decline into loserhood, which was only recently reversed. The pivotal event was when Jordan allowed his girlfriend's wishy-washy antics to essentially ruin his life, driving him to quit his job as a test pilot and start wandering around in a succession of ridiculously mundane jobs. In the later issues of Hal's first solo series, the stories often showed him frankly losing his mind for various reasons. It was a sad decline for the once relentlessly focused hero.
Read Volume Six for a look at what Hal once was, was meant to be, and should always have been.

Green Lantern has always been one of my favorite Silver Age titles from DC for two big reasons: Gardner Fox and Gil Kane. Fix was simply the most consistent writer for DC during the Silver Age and always respected the characters and rarely allowed them to fall into the silliness that other titles did during this period. And then there is Gil Kane. Kane was truly a shining star for DC in the early and mid-1960's. So many of DC's titles were done in their "house" style of artwork of people like Mike Sekowsky and Wayne Boring. It was all a bit bland. Kane had a dynamic and fine line detail that these other artists lacked and gave his work a layer of depth that made anything he worked on rise to the top.
In volume 6 of the Green Lantern archives we get issues #39 - 47 of the series, all featuring art by Kane and stories by Fox as well as John Broome. This volume is significant as it includes one of the most important key books of the Silver Age, Green Lantern #40, featuring a team-up of the Golden Age and Silver Age Lanterns. This wasn't the first time the pair had met, that happened in an earlier issue of Justice league of America, but it was the first time they were paired together in a Green Lantern comic. Issue #40 features one of the best Green Lantern covers of all-time.
In #41, GL battles Star Sapphire. This is the Carol Ferris version of Star Sapphire, actually the second of four different women to take that name. The last was killed by the Spectre during the recent Infinite Crisis storyline.
There are numerous guest stars in this volume...Zatanna teams up with Hal in issue #42, the Flash guest stars in #43, The Golden Age GL returns in #45, and the Green lantern Corps shows up in #46.
The last story is one of the best in the book. Green Lantern battles Dr. Polaris. Kane is at his best here in an all out, action-packed tale. Hal becomes infected by the Red Virus and has to use all his willpower to get the power ring to purge his system of the virus. As the virus leaves his body he finds himself attacked by the virus microbes.
This is great stuff from cover to cover. True classics of the Silver Age and I don't say that lightly,

Most people, including this reviewer, have bought this Volume 6 Archive, as well as the previous 5, because they are longtime Green Lantern fans. However, younger fans will not be disappointed. This volume expands and explains the GL Mythos, which exists to this day, and is a vital part of the DC Universe. The reader will find the original story of Kronos, who dared defy the Guardians........and a sequel formed a large part of the 1986 Crisis of Infinite Earths epic. Hal Jordan is every bit the hero here. The wonderful scripts by John Broome and Gardner Fox shine. One can also follow the greater sophistication of the Gil Kane artwork. The design package is quite striking as well, and it is worth the price. Enjoy!

Volume 2 of a trade collection of Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams' GL/GA team-ups, this book collects the remaining stories from GL #83-87, 89, plus a handfull of backups from from The Flash. As in the first volume, these stories from 1970 are full of harsh social commentary that sometimes borders on the absurd. Nevertheless, they make a point and bring important issues to the fore in comics, a medium that, up to that time, was notorious for ignoring such. In many cases, the final point of each story forces the reader to take a look at themselves, wondering what they would do in the same situation. Particularly outstanding is the two-part story in which Green Arrow finds that his former sidekick, Speedy of the Teen Titans, is a drug addict: quite a powerful conclusion that doesn't put on the brakes. Neal Adams' artwork for these stories is simply stunning. These heroes have never looked, and maybe never will look, so good again. The pencils enable the reader to feel the rage and anguish on their faces.
While I will always feel that these stories are overwhelming in their yearning to address the problems of their particular era, these issues are just as relevant today. You can still see racism, corporate greed, drug use, and pollution everywhere you look, so DC is doing a good thing by reprinting these stories. It seems that, even though we are more aware, times really never change.

Like the original Star Trek series, this series was cancelled while still in full swing for some reason. The high point is the story about drug addiction as well as the first appearance of John Stewart as Green Lantern. The stories may seem dated now, but at the time, they were taking comics into a new direction, and they remain one of the high points in comic book history.

This book will touch your emotions and inspire your mind in an unforgettable way. The faith of Arthur and Wilda Mathews amazes me. Their insight into the purposes of God, their ability to trust and obey, and their humble resolve in the face of great difficulty are a testimony to the sustaining power of God. Few people have lived as deep a firsthand experience of uncertainty and hardship as the Mathews. Only God could give the Mathews family the faith and courage to live through the events recorded in this book.

The Matthews family were among the last missionaries out of China as the country went down to the Communists. This is the story of the two years they spent near the Mongolian border, tested in every way. Their faith grew strong in the Refiner's fire, as they found the Living God able to meet every need. This book will give you principles and practical help for the suffering you are undergoing as a believer in Jesus Christ.

I loved this book! I live on the NY/VT border, so I spend a lot of time in southern Vermont, and it was so great to be reading about places that I have been to. It's really interesting to have a mental image of a place because you've been there, and then you learn that this place has a much darker past than you ever could have imagined, and the picture changes, but your interest increases. It's really cool. Citro's books are some of my favorites. He's a great author - I love his writing style.

In the tradition of old-time Yankee yarn-spinners, Citro delivers something that's all too rare nowadays--a darn good story. Dozens of them, in fact. I got so wrapped up in the tale called "The House of the Feasting Dead" that I nearly went past my subway stop. This is a hair-raising tour "dark" side of Vermont, a place populated by ghosts, mystics, spiritualists and even a "stone-throwing devil."

I thought this book was a great introduction to the theories and ideas behind Horticultural Therapy, Wilderness Programs, and other such rehabilitative nature-based programs. It provides a good general overview and is easy to read.
For someone (like me) who is looking for a book more advanced psychological explanations and discussions, I'd look somewhere else. Lewis is an alright writer, but he is a horticulturalist, not a psychologist. He often lacks the insight into how and why plants are meaningful in our lives. I would provide another recommendation, but I'm still searching myself!
In general, a very good read. He's spot-on with a lot of stuff...just don't expect mind-blowing insights on the psychological impacts of the treatments and programs he discusses.

Charles Lewis is the undisputed champion of people-plant relationships. A learned man, well-versed in all aspects of horticulture, Lewis is also an excellent writer. Lewis asks: "In what ways do plants enter our mental and spiritual lives?" What exactly is the importance of cultivating our own "inner garden." Gardens grow persons, not just plants. Lewis found that to pursue his interest in the human side of horticulture he had to look to other disciplines - psychology, sociology, geography, and medicine. Charles Lewis's Green Nature/ Human Nature is a must read for anyone who loves to garden. "Horticultural Therapy for the Soul" perhaps describes this book, but actually it is more. Check out this rare gem--you'll love it. Tom Ogren, author of Allergy-Free Gardening, Ten Speed Press.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a book about our human interaction with green nature. Very informative, very well researched, with individual text and quotes annotated to a huge and diverse bibliography. From window boxes in the ghettos, up through the role of plants in prisons and hospitals, to the attraction of parks and great forests and botanical gardens of the world, Charles Lewis explores our need to experience and/or nurture those historically ancient green living beings that are sharing their planet with us. The tons of gardening books I have (you know, the ones with compost-smudged pages and mispelled Latin scribbled in the margins) will not share the same shelf with this book. They are cookbooks, this is a book on hunger.

This is an excellent text that shows both engineers and managers how to apply principles to reducing environmental compliance costs. The works of Dr. Cheremisinoff are well known in the environmental management and pollution prevention fields. This book is a wonderful source of ideas and techniques for senior environmental managers.

This is an excellent book to generate cost saving ideas from. It combines simple engineering and management principles with a focus on proving to the reader how good environmental performance translates into good economic performance. The authors have done a great job in showing the basic prinicples and benefits of pollution prevention within the context of environmental management systems. The many industry-specific examples on P2 and waste minimization are simply excellent. I highly recommend this book for environmental managers.

Very informative book with new concepts on how to apply life cycle costs to pollution prevention projects. This book brings together two related subjects very clearly. It has helped our refineries see more clearly how an EMS can be applied within the context of pollution prevention. It clearly shows by many examples reasons for displacing end of pipe treatment trechnologies.

Nicholas Cheremisinoff is a consulting engineer with more than twenty years experience in design, research, development, manufacturing, and teaching. Avrom Bendavid-Val is Vice President for Environment and Development at Chermonics International Inc. In Green Profits: The Manager's Handbook for ISO 14001 And Pollution Prevention, Cheremisinoff and Bendavid-Val effectively collaborate to cover the two tightly connected topics of environmental management systems (EMS) and pollution prevention (P2). Together they show how to implement an EMS (especially ISO 14001) so that it leads to profitable pollution prevention innovations, and how to identify and implement pollution prevention measures within the context of a sound and strategic business framework. Green Profits provides the information and tools enterprising managers can apply to achieve the benefits of both EMS and P2 -- and do so in ways that fit within the corporation's existing management systems. Nicholas Cheremisinoff and Avrom Bendavid-Val Green Profits is a highly recommended addition to academic, professional, and corporate environmental engineering reference collections.

Green Stone of Healing is a fast-moving, complex fantasy series that follows four generations of strong women and the mysterious green stone that binds them to their people and culture as well as to each other. First in a series, The Vision nimbly covers the political, religious, and societal forces that converge in one person: Helen Andros. A very human heroine, Helen is trapped by forces from within as well as without. She struggles to understand who she is and her fate, while impacting nearly everyone around her. Her desires and best intentions often run afoul of her temper and her fierce stubbornness not to conform.
Snared in other people's webs of fear, deceit and power-grabbing, she becomes the loci of negative attention from the priests, rulers and military officers of her society. The Green Stone of Healing is destined to change her entire society, not just Helen.
Some readers will relate to her wild, compassionate heart and struggle to realize her destiny while keeping body and soul intact. Others will appreciate the fast action, complex political machinations and sometimes shocking violence of a society on the edge of implosion. There's magic woven in with the mundane realities. The author explores the concept of grand human cycles as represented by the multi-generational nature of the series and the reincarnation of the primary characters.
As a journalist and professional writer, Talmadge knows how to tell a story. This first book will hook you for the others to follow.

This is an intriguing book, and one showing considerable imagination. The plot lines maintained my interest throughout. The story never dragged and that is quite an achievement Not many authors nor books can lay claim to that. I quickly lose interest when I continually have to uncross my eyes. That never, ever happened with "Visions".
The author weaves a tale of moral fortitude, disturbing venality, hints of past wars and portents of future strife. Sexual aspects and tensions are appropriately presented as undertones, but do not go unnoticed.
The setting is somewhat futuristic and is cleverly presented what with skimmer and rotor vehicles. The author allows the reader to make what we will with this aspect of the story. This is a good way to do this.
I strongly advise studying the Glossary first. I didn't and had to play catch up. The Glossary is very interesting in and of itself. It is further evidence of the imaginative scope of the book.
The writing is excellent. It is very, very clearly written. This attribute cannot be overstated. I am sure I have read books as well written but none come to mind just now.
I am looking forward to an early release of the sequels and I hope they tie up some of the deliberate loose ends (hooks)left unaddressed. I heartily recommend "The Vision" to any thinking adult reader.

This first book in a projected multi-book saga introduces us to Helen Andros, a feisty and appealing military physician in a world ruled by malign reactionary theocrats and riven by racial distinctions -- a world vaguely reminiscent of the contemporary US of A. Lieutenant Andros goes through more trials, both literally and figuratively, than the perils of Pauline, and, while she doesn't always come out on top, she makes for good company, with an irrepressible, wise-cracking style that blends elements of heroines from film noir and screwball comedy. The writing is solid, and a glossary at the back of the book helps readers keep track of an extensive cast of characters which includes virtuous, conflicted heroes like Lord James and Lord Matthew and hissable villains like Prince Enoch. Despite the bleak world of Azgard conjured by the author, the book feels humanistic and warm, and its concluding vision (the vision of the title) whets reader interest in future installments.

The Toltecs dominated the island, narrow minded and set on power and domination their rule and their say so was law. They especially were against the Turanians, blue or green eyed people, their hatred ran deep for them, and there was a reason why although we are not fully aware of what it is in this first book of the series.
In the beginning of this read we meet Helen, a doctor in the service of the military, and one of great knowledge, but one that has little respect in the world she lives. Although few can deny her ability in healing; her independent rebellious nature causes anger in some and fear in others.
Helen Andros, daughter of Miriam Andros, a healer, is considered a half-breed, a beautiful woman with green eyes.. A woman who at the beginning of the read does not know who her father is, nor if her mother is alive or dead, after being sent away from her at a young age. The only thing she has is a necklace her mother gave her, one that has a green stone. This stone was given to her mother by Helen's father years ago, and has healing and protective powers, although Helen is not aware of that fact.
Despite the dislike of Helen, her abilities as a physician cannot be denied, and when the Prince falls ill, she is secretly ushered to his side. During this time she is arrested for entering the city without permission and her life begins to change due to one man, Lord Mordecai.
Lord Mordecai holds the title of Lord Protector and is respected among his people, but seeing the green stone that is now the property of Helen and her striking resemblance to her mother he knows she must surely be his daughter. Although he was never aware she existed. A confirmation is also given when a letter is read from Miriam naming him as the father.
A decision must be made by him; does he acknowledge that Helen is his daughter, for if he does it may well be the end of his career or even his life. Yet, he is a man of honor and the love that he still holds for Miriam spills over to his daughter and he saves her from certain death.
In this book you begin to taste the start of the supernatural; powers that some seem to have yet also seem to be hidden. You are given the knowledge that people of different civilizations that are at odds with one another will soon have their lives altered, although you are not sure how; but you realize that good is desperately trying to override the evil that is present.
I believe this first book is to introduce you to all the characters, their position in the series and their relationship one to another. The author includes a glossary of who's who at the end of the book, and also information of the different areas you will be reading about. This is a great help, because the story is complex and the characters and locations can be confusing, however they all are needed and flow together to begin a somewhat mystic tale.
Did you ever see a movie that has several parts and you have to wait until the next night to see what is going to happen? You sigh, because you say within yourself, " Oh it was just getting good!" that is how I felt when this work ended. The groundwork being laid, the author begins to uncover some secrets, but the answers await you in book two.
Those who love deep intricate stories, full of mystery and action, dripping with power struggles and battles for dominion, this work is for you. Just what is the secret behind the "Green Stone," that Helen wears proudly around her neck? What is the history of this stone; and how will this effect an entire civilization? The answers are in the future.
