This book is simply amazing, I could not wait for next time I could get into bed with it and a cup of tea and follow along with Wendy Johnson on her rich path of discovery through the garden and through life as a Zen person. The writing has a few too many words at times, but the fact that this was simultaneously a how-to book on gardening and a spiritual memoir full of deep Zen teachings makes it something very special. Wendy Johnson shows herself to be the real deal here, willing to take chances with her life and willing to get her hands dirty for the benefit of others and for the benefit of the planet.

This is more than a book about gardening. It is almost like reading poetry. For those of us who want to enjoy the language as much as the content, this books is most satisfying.

This book springs from rich earth. It digs into an era through the gardening and Buddhist practice of Wendy Johnson. It's so detailed and beautifully blended that, after a session of reading, I would marvel at the mere undertaking of writing this part-gardening, part-spiritual-journey and part-history of the times memoir. A real joy to be relished slowly.

Just a great book I felt I was walking in the garden with her. You just have to read this one.

This beautifully written book is full of wisdom and good information. It is an inspiring work that has had me smiling as I read and looking forward to getting my hands dirty in the garden.

It's a long time that I have been so fascinated by a popular science book as now happened, reading "Glowing Genes". Marc Zimmer neatly explains what one needs to know about genetics and chemistry. But that is not all. Since I read the book a few weeks ago,
· I have become more sensitive to and interested in the benefits of research done for the sake of discovering secrets of nature, as opposed to primarily profit motivated research.
· I believe to understand that not all cloning of animals is harmful, that the pros and cons have to be weighed in each case,
· And having read "Glowing Genes" and Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything", I often wonder how many inventors and first discoverers are forgotten or intentionally not recorded.
Reading "Glowing Genes" is a fun-tour of discovery. My mostly outdated High School Science seems to have been enough background to understand the well explained complex issues. I did have problems though with chapter 12. Perhaps I should read it once more.

I must admit I haven't read this book yet but I did have Marc Zimmer as a professor in college and he was a fascinating man with very interesting ideas. I am possitive that this book will be nothing less than great! If you're reading this review, chances are that you're a least someone interested in the topic of bioluminescence, and that's the case, then I highly recommend you give this book a read! Professor Zimmer lectured on this topic and the technology and possibilites are AMAZING!!!

I bought this book because I was fascinated by the pictures on the cover and read it to see if scientists can really make pigs with glowing noses. They can and they can do so much more. This book was very interesting and was easy to read. I finished it in one go. The author acknowledges Bill Bryson as one of his influences and you can clearly see that in his writing style ...perhaps thats why I enjoyed it so much. Glowing Genes also has cool pictures of a glowing bunny and fluorescent fruit fly sperm. It presents the complete story of GFP and the firefly protein - from the early scientists who caught 1000's of jellyfish and fruit flies to the newest applications. Read it, you will enjoy it.

I have to say that this was a very poorly edited book littered with bizarre mistakes: grammatical, spelling, and elementary history (the introduction talks about 17th century Victorian ladies!). The writing style veers from something targeted at teenagers to something more adult and back again, sometimes in one paragraph.

Having said that, this book really is worth reading, in spite of the style, because the science it describes is riveting. I was vaguely aware of fluorescence as something used by biologists, but the author really does a great job of covering the field; the history, the various ways in which fluorescence is used, the ways in which the essential chemistry of the subject has been modified over the past few years. I'm a sucker for pop science books but, sadly, most of them rehash material that any educated person should already know. It's rare to find one, like this, that not only is packed with material that I did not know but that also manages to weave it all into a coherent narrative.

This is a beautifully compiled book of truly heartfelt and inspirational stories from women of all sizes, shapes, backgrounds, and ages. Almost everyone is touched by cancer somehow these days... all these people should have this book.

You won't be able to put it down!! I have passed on my copy of this book to friends who either have or know someone with cancer & they have all said that it is an inspiration to them! It is a source of support! One friend is using the book as an educational tool, reading & discussing it with her 13 year old daughter. The book is encouraging! It is a phenomenal portrayal of strength & beauty.

I being a breast cancer survivor,two years now,was not sure how I would handle reading this book. Let me tell you.....every person who has dealt with cancer shd pick this up and read it.You will not put it down until you are done. For those like myself, you will relate to at least one story if not all. You will get filled up, remember things you had forgotten or put out of your mind , and you will laugh and smile. For people who have not had cancer but know someone who has you will understand a little better the daily worries and feelings we have which may help explain our sometimes mood swings etc. I am so proud of the work Lesley Daley put into this to help people handle or understand the situation when faced with it. She and the incredible women did a tastefull and awesome job expressing very private feelings through such beautiful photos and stories.

The photos are amazing, the interviews are touching & sensitive. I thought I wouldn't want to read it all in one sitting, but I grabbed a box of tissues, a pot of tea, curled up and spent my afternoon with the goddesses. I recommend the book, it is about life, strength, courage & bravery, fear, and faith in oneself. Thank you Lesley Daley for committing the time and sharing your insight and making this world just a little easier to understand the pain and courage of others, putting things in prospective. Thank you.

This book is a beautiful, chilling and inspiring glimpse into the lives of a wide variety of women during and after fighting cancer. The beautiful photographs are enough to tell the stories - the real personality of each women really comes through in the pictures. The written accounts with the pictuers are poignant glimpses into what these amazing women have been dealing with. I recommend this book - it's truely moving, stunning and inspirational.

I remember this book from kindergarten at Neutra School on NAS Lemoore. Everyone, including our teacher, cooed at the adventures of Green Eyes. I haven't thought of this book until my sister mentioned it and I looked here on Amazon to see if it was available. And it was!!

Great fun for my kids to enjoy.

As a little girl I checked this book out of our library nearly every month. I didn't know anyone else with green eyes like mine, so sweet little Green Eyes really captured my attention. The story is so delightful, and you can get lost in the illustrations.
When our library sold their used books, I had to buy "my" book. Now that I see the special edition for sale, I'm going to add the book to our collection.

One of the first books I remember reading as a child. My mother still has our copy, well, she has what is left of it. I'm so glad its still available. I'm pregnant with my first child and this is the first book I'm buying for my baby!

I remember my mother reading this book to me as a child. It is a wonderful book about how a curious cat sees the seasons. I am a teacher and read it to my first graders every year when we study the seasons.

I love this style of poetry... Real, Heart Felt and Honest, this book of poems is beautifully writen and largely underestimated. With a tone that reminds me of other great female poets such as Nikki Giovanni and Mya Angelou. Greeneyedrican is a talented star on the rise. I know we will be seeing alot from this author.

I love this book - it is one of my favorite cookbooks. This has delicious easy to make recipes including many variations on noodle soups, fried rice, curries, appetisers etc. The recipes taste authentic, such as the Singaporian laksa - which is as good as any I have had in Singapore
It is very modern, the recipes are trendy, and the food tastes restaurant class. After cooking out of this cookbook it is very difficult to enjoy going out for Asian meals again - much nicer to cook it yourself using this book!

Access to a well-stocked Asian grocery will be required for successful appreciation of GREEN MANGOES AND LEMON GRASS; but readers with such access will find this a fine introduction to the range of Southeast Asia's dishes, from Thailand's spicy cuisine to the French influences of Vietnamese dishes. Enjoy a Mimosa Rice from Vietnam spiced with coconut milk, fish sauce, Chinese sausages and onions; or a Spicy Minced Beef from Laos with lime juice and lemon grass. Beautiful color photos abound.

Ms. Hutton offers reliable, clear recipes in a beautiful book, with clear advice as to ingredients, combinations, and cooking techniques. Lush photographs make everything look scrumptious. Good design keeps one recipe together on one page. I have had very good results with the three recipes I have tried. I bought the hardback because I expect to be using this book often, and appreciate the author's identification of recipes that require extra time and effort--a whole chapter. Another approach I appreciate is a good use of English that is not too British, not too American--but comprehensible to both, I hope. I am an American cook but sometimes use metric measures and having both is helpful.

Not only is this book beautiful to look at, the recipes produce the most delicious (and authentic tasting) food. The simple recipes are easy enough even for people who aren't that confident in the kitchen (like my spouse); the fancier ones are perfect for dinner parties. Highly recommended!

I am amazed at the genius of Frank Darabont. SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is the type of film that many directors spend their entire lives trying to make. That film alone is worthy of placing Darabont in the top echelon of modern directors. However, with THE GREEN MILE, Darabont has triumphed again. This screenplay is not as in depth as the SHAWSHANK shooting script. Nevertheless, it is still quite informative and is a useful resource for aspiring filmmakers. Transcribing an already successful published work into a successful movie is extremely difficult and rarely happens. However, Darabont has done it twice. A person can learn a great deal about writing just by reading this book. There's no better way to learn than to learn from a master.

I bought this book after I saw the movie. The main reason is because this film touched me deeply. Secondly I collect screen plays. This is a true gem! The film's beauty is printed as an unforgettable story. Screen play is based on Novel series by Stephen King. Excellent screen play!!

Frank Darabont found himself in an enviable position with his screenplay adapting Stephen King's "The Green Mile" to the screen; instead of going hat-in-hand to stars and begging them to appear in his film, he had major Hollywood talent lining up around the block, asking to BE in the film! Anyone wishing to know why can read his screenplay, published by Simon & Schuster and featuring an introduction by Stephen King, who has labeled it the best adaptation of his or anyone's work ever.

Darabont skillfuly adapts King's novel to the screen.; not a slavish adaptation, this screenplay seeks instead to convey the spirit of King's novel in cinematic terms. For example, instead of having prison guard Paul Edgecomb go out and investigate the murders of the two dead girls for which his prisoner, John Coffey, has been condemned, he finds out by a transfer of information osmoticqally from Coffey. This serves the twofold purpose of shortening the film's running time (the finished film is over three hours in length), and also works much better cinematically, conveying the needed information in four minutes instead of twenty or so. The chance to read a Darabont screenplay is one aspiring screenwriters should take. I was privileged to work with Frank Darabont on "The Green Mile". It is an experience I will never forget, and I cannot recommend this book, or the film to which it gave rise, enough.

With "The Green Mile: The Screenplay", writer-director Frank Darabont provides would-be screenwriters with an unprecedented look at how a perfect screen adaptation is written. Stephen King, author of the novel on which the film is based, has called Darabont's screenplay "hands-down, the best film adaptation I've ever read." Tom Hanks, the film's star, said of the screenplay, "It's that rarest thing, that thing you're always looking for, this piece of work that shows up on your desk, ready to shoot, and you look at it and say, 'Wow! We just have to show up and make this thing!'" In most situations, directors come to actors hat in hand, begging actors to work on a film. With "The Green Mile", Darabont had actors lining up to work in the film. Even actors of the stature of Gary Sinise were willing to take virtual cameos to appear in the film. The book contains Darabont's final shooting script, which even in that form, contains minor differences from the finished film. It also features introductions by Stephen King and Darabont, as well as a selection of stills and storyboards which give readers added insight into the production of what is easily this year's best film. Although lacking the in-depth analysis of changes in the screenplay which were present in Darabont's last book, "The Shawshank Redemption: The Shooting Script", this book is well worth reading, and, in copanionship with the forthcoming "The Making of 'The Green Mile'", will give readers a guided tour of the production of a modern film classic.

I discovered the first episodes of The Green Mile in Biloxi, Mississippi, and the last ones in France. I read them. I was moved by strong emotions, practically to tears, and yet I remained unsatisfied. I reread it when it came out in one volume, and I had the same sensation of frustration. The book, the story had two lines and the unity was not clear, the message was not obvious and it seemed to be that there is always a devil somewhere to torture, at times to death, the righteous and the innocent. The two time lines were not really reinforcing each other. The bad nurse of the old people's home was not a real continuation of Percy, and Percy did not have and could not have, does not have and cannot have a continuation. Evil in man is repetitive, but in no way continuing, developing, getting any kind of amplification with time. I have just been listening to a tape about the psychiatric hospitals of the old days (up to the mid 70s in France), and the doctors, the nurses, and even the patients, those who dedicated their whole life to get rid of that institution, compared these asylums to concentration camps and demonstrated how the inmates were reduced to animals, and yet resisting, how the rations (during World War II) where starvation rations meant to slowly kill the inmates by starving them. Doctor Lucien Bonnafé, MD, cannot be in any way stopped in his explanation of this alienation, of this reduction of men to vegetables, especially with the chemical straight jacket. Hitler did not invent concentration camps, and he did not invent eugenics, the cleansing of society of their misfits. He just systematised, industrialised it. But, But, BUT, I finally got to the screenplay of The Green Mile by Frank Darabont. He got that second time line out. He recentered the whole story on Paul, the only one Paul that crosses time. And then the light came out so strong that I was not moved any more, but literally blinded into ever stronger and never before experienced emotions, into unquenchable tears, tears that were a salvation, a redemption, an epiphany that would not ever satisfy and quench my thirst for optimistic humanism. This human world contains angels that can transform evil into good, and it is John Coffey, a black man. He has done that for a very long time, till the one day he gets trapped by his naivete and simplemindedness, because angels are naive, simpleminded and maybe slightly retarded, since then cannot conceive evil. When one does only good things and can only bring good news to the world, he is totally isolated, rejected, and thus he becomes the prey of all evil beings who will abuse him and trampled him down. And yet he is not completely trapped, because he comes to the point when he wants to go, to leave this world, where he can only love and be loved by fireflies. So he is happy when he gets trapped, relieved of this enormous responsibility of making the world better, of killing or repairing evil. Even if it means Death Row. But, before leaving, he gives his good nature to some other beings, even if he cannot give them his powers. Here it is a mouse, Mr Jingles, and a man, Paul. And his gift takes the form of a very long life. The very long life of telling the truth, the truth of God, the truth that killing is ugly, no matter whether it is criminal or judicial. Only life is beautiful, and the story of life has to be told forever and ever, to push death away, even if it is Death Row. This life story has to be told over and over again, just like a mouse will play with a spool forever. And thus, Darabont gets us to a universal lesson, to a unique and eternal metaphor. The writer, the storyteller is forever the one who will bring life to earth, real life, the life of justice, of beauty, of emotions, of truth, of entertainment, of happiness. The storyteller is God himself, or at least his angel, because he nourishes our souls with the desire to know a better world. When are we ever going to have the film, the video, so that we can be moved to frantic tears by the images that will demultiply the screenplay into a real piece of human paradise, in our dreams, in our night, in our daydream, in our sunshine of hope ?

This is a wonderful easy read about the history of western herbalism. It is very thorough without becoming dry or overbearing, and is written in a very pleasant style.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in medicine and/or herbal medicine. It covers an incredible amount of history, presented in a very easy to read and engaging style. I couldn't put it down!

Green Pharmacy is one of the best books to read on the history of Herbalism and its connections to medical treatments. I liked it because it clearly explains how the principal constituent when isolated for conventional medicinal purposes, can cause harmful side effects. The book reveals that using herbs as a whole plant is more beneficial. A very educational book.

Ms. Van Der Zee has written a book that is quite fascinating! For me this particular book was required reading, but Im actually glad that it was because I learned a great deal about the history of herbal and general medicine throughout the millenia. The history and facts are interesting and higly readable. Ms. Van Der Zee makes you want to keep reading. Green Pharmacy is a book that is not only a "must read" but a definite "must own".

The sick and suffering in the USA who are appalled by current high prices for their medication will be amazed to learn this struggle has been unceasing throughout human history. Barbara Griggs describes how for many centuries inexpensive herbal remedies were fostered by women who were unable to afford the costly medicines or services of established doctors. For current times, the author explains,"The quiet revolution which is gradually bringing plants back to centre-stage is patient rather than doctor-driven. It is patients who may be bankrupted by the cost of medical treatment, if they are not lucky enough to be clients of a generous national health service"pg.369 An outraged public is making this a major concern of the presidential election. To intelligently deal with our current medical dilemma, read and absorb this studiously prepared history of ways of healing.

I have probably cooked 50 recipes from this book, and everything turns out great! What a broad variety of dishes. This is the book I go to when a find some fresh or interesting vegetables at the store, and need some wonderful way to cook them..This book makes me want to go cook some wonderful vegetables, and read some of Bert Green's introductory comments!!!

With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a wonderful addition to any cookbook library. This book is NOT vegetarian. At the beginning of each new vegetable section the author covers a little history, nutritional facts, what to look for, and how to prepare the vegetable.

This book contains a variety of ethnic recipes. There are many French, and Italian recipes. But the author has also included recipes from the Netherlands, Basque region and the Southern USA.

There are many delicious recipes in this book. I think that my favorite is the sautéed peas with walnuts or maybe the baked potato-stuffed cucumbers. It is hard to choose a favorite recipe from this book since so many of them are winners.

I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in adding new vegetable preparations to their culinary repertoire.

I received this cookbook 20 years ago for a wedding present. I love it! Each vegetable is talked about as to what to look for in buying, what its historical uses have been(either worldwide or in his family), and what the author's favorite way of cooking it is. The recipes that follow are gleaned from many different sources. Not low fat, but high taste. I was given some fennel last year and had no clue what to do with it. Got out Greene on Greens and made some fabulous fennel bread.

Want to enhance your vegetable dishes with some new variety and spice? This is great resource to help.

Having sought our at times just these goals, this book has always delivered. For instance, winter squash blaws? Try Winter Squash Creme Brulee or or Spaghetti Squash Tetrazzini. Amazingly is the richness of flavor in a parsnip based dish called Pike's Peak Souffle.

Just examples to wet your interest to find and try this. Over 450 recipes, each clearly detailed to follow. Not exceptional ingredients of the hard to find category. From Artichokes to Zucchini, this is handy reference to follow.

If chance, pick up his volume, one of my favorite cookbooks, Bert Greene's Kitchen Bouquets. He's a great cook and writer!

Bert Greene's books are all terrific, but this one is my favorite. It never disappoints me; Greene himself had a warm, wise personality and a love of good food. The directions on vegetable preparation are exceptionally good. The recipes themselves are fantastic. Buy this one!

My son Joseph loves all the books in this series. Any boy that loves Thomas the Tank will! They are easy to handle for small boys. The pages are durable.

As every parent of a Thomas Fan knows, these books would better be durable and easy to carry. This book is an excellent combination of both. The four original stories are accompanied by the original illustrations, and put together in a durable hardcover, easy to carry format.

When my 3-yr old takes an interest in something, it usually becomes an all-out obsession: dinosaurs, construction vehicles, space and so it continues with Thomas the Tank Engine. We've read other books and rented videos, but these books (there are four in this series) are his beloved. The stories are simple and plentiful with a bit of a moral to them, without being pretentious or zealous. The writing style is delightful: adult enough not to bore the reader and yet perfectly understandable for the listener (assuming it's a child!). The pictures are clear but not movie or television tie-ins - it makes them more lovable! The books are small and my son loves to stack them and carry them around with him.

If your child loves Thomas and you're tired of media tie-ins, these books are for you!

Henry the Green engine had been having problems for many years. He had given Sir Topham Hatt a great deal of trouble and worry. The stories of Henry, the green engine, come to us as a very beautiful book. Known as the Flying Kipper, Henry and his trucks have fun making their rounds. After an accident, Henry gets a new shape. When some troublesome boys decide to throw rocks at engines passing under a bridge, Henry teaches them a lesson. Written by Wilbert Awdry. Illustrated by Clarence Reginald Dalby. Published by Kaye & Ward in Great Britian in 1951.
