The Green Beret in You: Living with Total Commitment to Family, Career, Sports and Life

Mr. Giduck and his associates do an outstanding job of describing in simple "real" speak what it means to make a commitment to life. We will be using his book as a model for character building with our high school students. All educators should read this book as they ponder how to build character in America's youth and in themselves.

The Green Beret in You is both entertaining and inspirational. The book provides many insights about one author's experience as one of the most elite warriors in the world and explains how the lifestyle learned by green berets can and should extend to everyday life. The authors remind us of many of the principles that make one's life worth living. Take courage, for example. We all experience fear as a natural response, but warriors will go out of their way to engage in activities that force them to confront and deal with their fears. Another principle - recognize and live up to your responsibility to family, friends, and community - could help counteract the growing insular nature of today's American culture. Many of us go about our lives trying to improve personal happiness while minimizing risk of personal harm. But how many of us actively attempt to improve the lives of those around us, and are willing to put ourselves in harm's way when someone less capable of defending him- or herself is in need of help? This is exactly the type of thing that this book reminds us to do, and demonstrates that it is a way to bring the meaning that so many of us are searching for into our lives.

This book needs to be read by every man and young man in the United States. We need men that live by these words. I attended a class with the one of the authors John Giduck, and purchased the book there. I am now ordering a copy for each police officer in my agency. I also am purchasing one for my son. Great book.

Let me start by saying I'm a housewife in a small town in Colorado. I also have a keen interest in history and how it is affecting us now in this time of terror and jihad. But when I was given this book to read I didn't really feel it would apply to me. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book offers for something for every man, woman and child in this country. For men, it asks you to look inside yourself and decide what is important enough to take a stand on. For women, it gives you information on safety, and who your "life team" really is, and how to create it. (How many of your friends or family will REALLY be there to do something that counts when you really need them)? For children, do your parents know how to keep you safe, including in a case where your school is attacked? What I know is that some parts of this book were written as if they were written for me, and others showed me better parts of myself than I have ever been able to find by myself. Don't be put off by the title, it is not only for Green Berets, but for America. Many lessons to learn, and perhaps like me you will find something deep inside of you that is stronger, better, and more willing to stand up for what you think, and what your life team needs from you. Thank you John and Andy for creating a better person in me. I hope that more Americans will read it and start to find out who and what they are and stand for.

I've just finished The Green Beret In You by John Giduck and found it to be outstanding. John has brought the true meaning of the Green Beret spirt to each and every page of the book. It's much different than any other book I have read and would recommend it to everyone, male and female alike of all age groups. I have a new outlook on life and understand why the Green Berets are the men that they are and why they live the life they do.This is a "must read" for any Special Operations Operator, be it military or law enforcement, you can"t help but take something away to better your life by reading this well written book.

As BIM becomes common place in the architectural design community, the tools and thought processes for designers will be transformed. The expectations of those who hire and pay the designer will be heightened far beyond the current standard of care.

It's about time! CADD has held potential to automate, systematize, and streamline the construction industry for decades but has failed miserably to deliver. Currently with the advancement of BIM that potential is becoming a reality. We are on the cusp of a paradigm shift in our industry. Eddy Krygiel and Brad Nies have given us a glimpse of what the future holds. I am thinking every day about the impacts of what I do in my design work and with this cogent book I am more motivated to develop my basis of design concepts in a globally responsible manner. This text informs that basis with processes and theories in a very readable fashion

This is a groundbreaking exploration of what you can do TODAY with BIM to make your buildings sustainable. Its got a lot of pictures and graphics that neatly explain the concepts. You can tell from reading the first few chapters that these guys really know what they are talking about.

Good for both students and professionals. a step by step procedure to achieve Green Design using BIM technology, with real life examples, procedures, calculations, etc...
The main program discussed is Autodesks's Revit, wish they used more than one application.

As a little girl I checked this book out of our library nearly every month. I didn't know anyone else with green eyes like mine, so sweet little Green Eyes really captured my attention. The story is so delightful, and you can get lost in the illustrations.
When our library sold their used books, I had to buy "my" book. Now that I see the special edition for sale, I'm going to add the book to our collection.
ps - When my own blue-eyed daughter was growing up, this book was a favorite of hers, too!

Book Review: Green Goes With Everything: Simple Steps To a Healthier Life and a Cleaner Planet by Sloan Barnett (Atria Books, 2008)

Sloan Barnett is a mom on a mission. Because her son was diagnosed with asthma, now at epidemic numbers, she began to research the disease. Ms. Barnett, the Green Editor of KNTV, and a contributor to NBC's Today Show, is also a television and print journalist. She found that asthma has skyrocketed 160% since 1980 to 9 million children under age 18 diagnosed. Asthma is the most chronic disease affecting 1 of every 13 school-aged children in the United States.

While researching and interviewing doctors, toxicologists, and scientists, Ms. Barnett discovered six epidemiological studies which have found a link between certain cleaning products and asthma. Unapologetically, Ms. Barnett switched all cleaners in her home to the Shaklee brand and never again needed to take her son to the emergency room with an asthma attack.

Green Goes With Everything covers all aspects of a chemically-free home:

* Household Cleaners: focuses on which products to avoid and which to use for less chemical exposure
* The body: perfumes, makeup, deodorant, hair care products, etc.
* Water: addresses bottled versus tap issues
* Air: pollution occurs in the home from chemical-laden products
* Energy: develops thoughts around recycling and conservation
* Food: special notice given to the organic industry
* Baby: this is where it all begins and ends--"My two oldest children are both allergic to nuts. My third child, who was raised in a nontoxic home, eating only organic formula and food, recently tested allergy free. Look, I can't be certain that our new lifestyle is the reason this baby is allergy free, but it sure does make you think."--Sloan Barnett

Further Highlights:

* The European Union bans more chemicals than the U.S. "The levels of PBDES in American mothers were anywhere from 10-100% higher than in mothers in Europe." (PBDEs--common flame retardants found in household goods--mattresses, furniture, carpet padding, etc..)
* The author had her own bloodwork done at Harvard School of Public Health to show the level of toxins in her body compared with the U. S. Average Level.
* The book is backed by several pages of researched notes.
* It includes a substantial resource guide of companies that create chemical-free products.
* Each chapter begins with five green tips and some plain green truths.

If you're unsure about what's safe to use or put into your home, your children have allergies and/or asthma, or you're planning to have a baby, this book is your manual. Green Goes With Everything can help you make a difference in the quality of your home and the lives of your children. Take it from me, the mother of a son who was once diagnosed with allergies to almost all foods and pollens. I too created a clean home for my family.

I found Green Goes With Everthing -- to be a witty, practical read that gives simple information on what toxins are, why they are relevant, and how to get them out of your home and body. The thing I love so much about this book is that it is written in a way that makes it simple to take action. It is informative without being preachy. It is detailed without being overwhelming. The author ends each chapter with five green "hot tips". If we all implement just one tip from each chapter we all will be contibuting to a healthier planet, a healthier home and a healthier body!

Over the past year, there have been dozens of books on the green theme published, and Green Goes with Everything: Simple Steps to a Healthier Life and Cleaner Planet, by Sloane Barnett, is the newest. Barnett does her research and presents a good primer to get anyone started on a healthy, toxic-free life.

My biggest complaint is Barnett's obsession over non-toxic cleaning products and cleaning the home. On one hand, I get it--her son, Spencer, had an asthma attack at age three that landed him in the hospital. (Spencer gets better once the toxic cleaning products are removed.) The other source of her obsession is what is a bit annoying--her husband is CEO of Shaklee products, which are non-toxic household cleaning products.

Now, Barnett is not alone--there are entire books written about how to clean your home and with what products. I just think too many--including Barnett--go on and on about cleaning and non-toxic products--just DO IT and move on to more important subjects. really--cleaning the house is not rocket science...

The first three chapters are devoted to the subject of a non-toxic home. In chapter one, we learn "the real dirt on clean." The chapter discusses the probable toxins in our home and what is "scary" vs. is "safe" dirt.

Chapter two informs about the dangerous cleaning products in our home.

Chapter three is about alternative safe cleaning products. This is where we hear how wonderful and superior Shaklee products are. A bit too info-commercial for my tastes. Barnett does offer some simple handmade cleaning solutions and non-toxic household cleaning products that Shaklee doesn't manufacture. The reality--most of the "alternative" non-toxic cleaning products work just fine.

Chapter 4 is about non-toxic body care products. Hair color, deodorant and other unsafe products are discussed and safe alternatives are provided.

In chapter 6, Barnett explains how to eat organic while buying smarter and cheaper and what chemicals to avoid in food.

Chapter 7 discusses clean water. Good advice on how to make your tap water safe and to avoid the extremely wasteful throwaway bottles.

In chapter 8, a broader look at how to keep the air in ones home clean is discussed. Barnett writes about fireplaces and stoves, cabinets, furniture and upholstery and mattresses--all stuff that outgasses and degrades the air quality. She does a good basic job of this, but for an comprehensive guide to all facets of furniture, walls, floors and more, a great companion to this book is: HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

Chapter 9 covers energy in the home and Barnett provides easy ways to save on energy in the home.

There are resources at the end of the book for many green products.

Recommend as a good, green primer for the home.

"Most Americans, but especially children, have dozens of pesticides and other toxic compounds in their bodies, many of them linked to health threads. A source of many of these toxins? Common, everyday, run of the mill household consumer products. There's no polite way of saying this: your body is a landfill, a dumping ground for a mind-boggling array of toxic chemicals. So is mine. So is your child's..." Sloan Barnett writes. She continues to discuss other potential household toxins and simple steps that everyone can take to a healthier life and a cleaner planet.

"Green Goes with Everything" is divided into ten chapters, including: The Real Dirt on Clean, Scary Clean, Safe Clean, Clean Body, Clean Baby, Clean Food, Clean Water, Clean Water, Clean Air, Clean Energy. Each chapter starts with several items on plain green truth, and ends with five green-hot tips that you can use to improve your life.

This book is filled with useful information and convincing facts and statistics. I like Sloan Barnett's style of writing. She is able to convey complicated issues and facts in plain English. I can tell she did spend a lot of time doing research and investigation. Most of the important facts or data have official sources. Sloan noted over 160 sources for her information at the end of the book.

Going green is one of the most important trends of our century. I have always been interested in this subject and have even written a book on it (LEED AP Exam Guide, Outskirts Press, 2008), yet I still learn a lot from Sloan's book. For example, on page 54, she gives you a tip to use water, white vinegar and lemon juice to make your own safe and clean window cleaner. On page 92, she points out: "...Two common shampoo ingredients, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and its close relative sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), are surfactants or sudsing agents. They have been found in lab studies to cause severe epidermal changes in the skin of mice. However, as with coal tar, the FDA's position is that, since the products are in contact with the skin only briefly, they cause no harm..." She then gives you several alternative shampoo brands that are safe and effective.

"Green Goes with Everything" is an information-rich and reader-friendly book. It has a lot of useful information that can improve your health or even save your life.

This is a book to be savored and returned to again and again.

Inspired by my best friend Zem of ecofabulous, I've been recycling for over a decade. I even bought a hybrid car two years ago but I've been really slow to go completely green. It wasn't until I read "Green Goes with Everything," that I was propelled to throw out all my toxic household products. This book lit a fire under me to get serious about the products I buy and what I surround myself with. I read it in one day! Anyone who has a child should definitely read this book. Sloan is smart, funny, relatable, and clearly spells out simple steps to living a greener, healthier life. Quick read. Everlasting lessons.

I love this book - it is one of my favorite cookbooks. This has delicious easy to make recipes including many variations on noodle soups, fried rice, curries, appetisers etc. The recipes taste authentic, such as the Singaporian laksa - which is as good as any I have had in Singapore
It is very modern, the recipes are trendy, and the food tastes restaurant class. After cooking out of this cookbook it is very difficult to enjoy going out for Asian meals again - much nicer to cook it yourself using this book!

Enjoy a Mimosa Rice from Vietnam spiced with coconut milk, fish sauce, Chinese sausages and onions; or a Spicy Minced Beef from Laos with lime juice and lemon grass. Beautiful color photos abound.

Ms. Hutton offers reliable, clear recipes in a beautiful book, with clear advice as to ingredients, combinations, and cooking techniques. Lush photographs make everything look scrumptious. Good design keeps one recipe together on one page. I have had very good results with the three recipes I have tried. I bought the hardback because I expect to be using this book often, and appreciate the author's identification of recipes that require extra time and effort--a whole chapter. Another approach I appreciate is a good use of English that is not too British, not too American--but comprehensible to both, I hope. I am an American cook but sometimes use metric measures and having both is helpful.

I am amazed at the genius of Frank Darabont. SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is the type of film that many directors spend their entire lives trying to make. That film alone is worthy of placing Darabont in the top echelon of modern directors. However, with THE GREEN MILE, Darabont has triumphed again. This screenplay is not as in depth as the SHAWSHANK shooting script. Nevertheless, it is still quite informative and is a useful resource for aspiring filmmakers. Transcribing an already successful published work into a successful movie is extremely difficult and rarely happens. However, Darabont has done it twice. A person can learn a great deal about writing just by reading this book. There's no better way to learn than to learn from a master.

Frank Darabont found himself in an enviable position with his screenplay adapting Stephen King's "The Green Mile" to the screen; instead of going hat-in-hand to stars and begging them to appear in his film, he had major Hollywood talent lining up around the block, asking to BE in the film! Anyone wishing to know why can read his screenplay, published by Simon & Schuster and featuring an introduction by Stephen King, who has labeled it the best adaptation of his or anyone's work ever.

Darabont skillfuly adapts King's novel to the screen.; not a slavish adaptation, this screenplay seeks instead to convey the spirit of King's novel in cinematic terms. For example, instead of having prison guard Paul Edgecomb go out and investigate the murders of the two dead girls for which his prisoner, John Coffey, has been condemned, he finds out by a transfer of information osmoticqally from Coffey. This serves the twofold purpose of shortening the film's running time (the finished film is over three hours in length), and also works much better cinematically, conveying the needed information in four minutes instead of twenty or so. The chance to read a Darabont screenplay is one aspiring screenwriters should take. I was privileged to work with Frank Darabont on "The Green Mile". It is an experience I will never forget, and I cannot recommend this book, or the film to which it gave rise, enough.

With "The Green Mile: The Screenplay", writer-director Frank Darabont provides would-be screenwriters with an unprecedented look at how a perfect screen adaptation is written. Stephen King, author of the novel on which the film is based, has called Darabont's screenplay "hands-down, the best film adaptation I've ever read." Tom Hanks, the film's star, said of the screenplay, "It's that rarest thing, that thing you're always looking for, this piece of work that shows up on your desk, ready to shoot, and you look at it and say, 'Wow! We just have to show up and make this thing!'" In most situations, directors come to actors hat in hand, begging actors to work on a film. With "The Green Mile", Darabont had actors lining up to work in the film. Even actors of the stature of Gary Sinise were willing to take virtual cameos to appear in the film. The book contains Darabont's final shooting script, which even in that form, contains minor differences from the finished film. It also features introductions by Stephen King and Darabont, as well as a selection of stills and storyboards which give readers added insight into the production of what is easily this year's best film. Although lacking the in-depth analysis of changes in the screenplay which were present in Darabont's last book, "The Shawshank Redemption: The Shooting Script", this book is well worth reading, and, in copanionship with the forthcoming "The Making of 'The Green Mile'", will give readers a guided tour of the production of a modern film classic.

I discovered the first episodes of The Green Mile in Biloxi, Mississippi, and the last ones in France. I read them. I was moved by strong emotions, practically to tears, and yet I remained unsatisfied. I reread it when it came out in one volume, and I had the same sensation of frustration. The book, the story had two lines and the unity was not clear, the message was not obvious and it seemed to be that there is always a devil somewhere to torture, at times to death, the righteous and the innocent. The two time lines were not really reinforcing each other. The bad nurse of the old people's home was not a real continuation of Percy, and Percy did not have and could not have, does not have and cannot have a continuation. Evil in man is repetitive, but in no way continuing, developing, getting any kind of amplification with time. I have just been listening to a tape about the psychiatric hospitals of the old days (up to the mid 70s in France), and the doctors, the nurses, and even the patients, those who dedicated their whole life to get rid of that institution, compared these asylums to concentration camps and demonstrated how the inmates were reduced to animals, and yet resisting, how the rations (during World War II) where starvation rations meant to slowly kill the inmates by starving them. Doctor Lucien Bonnafé, MD, cannot be in any way stopped in his explanation of this alienation, of this reduction of men to vegetables, especially with the chemical straight jacket. Hitler did not invent concentration camps, and he did not invent eugenics, the cleansing of society of their misfits. He just systematised, industrialised it. But, But, BUT, I finally got to the screenplay of The Green Mile by Frank Darabont. He got that second time line out. He recentered the whole story on Paul, the only one Paul that crosses time. And then the light came out so strong that I was not moved any more, but literally blinded into ever stronger and never before experienced emotions, into unquenchable tears, tears that were a salvation, a redemption, an epiphany that would not ever satisfy and quench my thirst for optimistic humanism. This human world contains angels that can transform evil into good, and it is John Coffey, a black man. He has done that for a very long time, till the one day he gets trapped by his naivete and simplemindedness, because angels are naive, simpleminded and maybe slightly retarded, since then cannot conceive evil. When one does only good things and can only bring good news to the world, he is totally isolated, rejected, and thus he becomes the prey of all evil beings who will abuse him and trampled him down. And yet he is not completely trapped, because he comes to the point when he wants to go, to leave this world, where he can only love and be loved by fireflies. So he is happy when he gets trapped, relieved of this enormous responsibility of making the world better, of killing or repairing evil. Even if it means Death Row. But, before leaving, he gives his good nature to some other beings, even if he cannot give them his powers. Here it is a mouse, Mr Jingles, and a man, Paul. And his gift takes the form of a very long life. The very long life of telling the truth, the truth of God, the truth that killing is ugly, no matter whether it is criminal or judicial. Only life is beautiful, and the story of life has to be told forever and ever, to push death away, even if it is Death Row. This life story has to be told over and over again, just like a mouse will play with a spool forever. And thus, Darabont gets us to a universal lesson, to a unique and eternal metaphor. The writer, the storyteller is forever the one who will bring life to earth, real life, the life of justice, of beauty, of emotions, of truth, of entertainment, of happiness. The storyteller is God himself, or at least his angel, because he nourishes our souls with the desire to know a better world. When are we ever going to have the film, the video, so that we can be moved to frantic tears by the images that will demultiply the screenplay into a real piece of human paradise, in our dreams, in our night, in our daydream, in our sunshine of hope ?

Green Pharmacy is one of the best books to read on the history of Herbalism and its connections to medical treatments. I liked it because it clearly explains how the principal constituent when isolated for conventional medicinal purposes, can cause harmful side effects. The book reveals that using herbs as a whole plant is more beneficial. A very educational book.

An Excellent Resource!

Ms. Van Der Zee has written a book that is quite fascinating! For me this particular book was required reading, but Im actually glad that it was because I learned a great deal about the history of herbal and general medicine throughout the millenia. The history and facts are interesting and higly readable. Ms. Van Der Zee makes you want to keep reading. Green Pharmacy is a book that is not only a "must read" but a definite "must own".

The sick and suffering in the USA who are appalled by current high prices for their medication will be amazed to learn this struggle has been unceasing throughout human history. Barbara Griggs describes how for many centuries inexpensive herbal remedies were fostered by women who were unable to afford the costly medicines or services of established doctors. For current times, the author explains,"The quiet revolution which is gradually bringing plants back to centre-stage is patient rather than doctor-driven. It is patients who may be bankrupted by the cost of medical treatment, if they are not lucky enough to be clients of a generous national health service"pg.369 An outraged public is making this a major concern of the presidential election. To intelligently deal with our current medical dilemma, read and absorb this studiously prepared history of ways of healing.

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a wonderful addition to any cookbook library. This book is NOT vegetarian. There are many vegetarian recipes and some vegan recipes, but there are also recipes that include meat.

The book is subdivided the vegetable those included are as follows:

Artichokes
Asparagus
Avocados
Beets
Broccoli
Brussels Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Celery and Celery Root
Corn
Cucumbers
Eggplants
Fennel
Greens
Kale
Kohlrabi
Okra
Onions and Leeks
Parsnips
Peas
Peppers
Potatoes
Spinach
Squash
String Beans
Sweet Potatoes
Tomatoes
Turnips and Rutabagas
Zucchini

At the beginning of each new vegetable section the author covers a little history, nutritional facts, what to look for, and how to prepare the vegetable.

This book contains a variety of ethnic recipes. There are many French, and Italian recipes. But the author has also included recipes from the Netherlands, Basque region and the Southern USA.

There are many delicious recipes in this book. I think that my favorite is the sautéed peas with walnuts or maybe the baked potato-stuffed cucumbers. It is hard to choose a favorite recipe from this book since so many of them are winners.

I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in adding new vegetable preparations to their culinary repertoire.

A fantastic book i have used for 20 years.

I received this cookbook 20 years ago for a wedding present. I love it! Each vegetable is talked about as to what to look for in buying, what its historical uses have been(either worldwide or in his family), and what the author's favorite way of cooking it is. The recipes that follow are gleaned from many different sources. Not low fat, but high taste. I was given some fennel last year and had no clue what to do with it. Got out Greene on Greens and made some fabulous fennel bread.

Want to enhance your vegetable dishes with some new variety and spice? This is great resource to help.

Having sought our at times just these goals, this book has always delivered. For instance, winter squash blaws? Try Winter Squash Creme Brulee or or Spaghetti Squash Tetrazzini. Amazingly is the richness of flavor in a parsnip based dish called Pike's Peak Souffle.

Just examples to wet your interest to find and try this. Over 450 recipes, each clearly detailed to follow. Not exceptional ingredients of the hard to find category. From Artichokes to Zucchini, this is handy reference to follow.

If chance, pick up his volume, one of my favorite cookbooks, Bert Greene's Kitchen Bouquets. He's a great cook and writer!

Engaging and informative text; superb recipes.

Bert Greene's books are all terrific, but this one is my favorite. It never disappoints me; Greene himself had a warm, wise personality and a love of good food. The directions on vegetable preparation are exceptionally good. The recipes themselves are fantastic. Buy this one!

As every parent of a Thomas Fan knows, these books would better be durable and easy to carry. This book is an excellent combination of both. The four original stories are accompanied by the original illustrations, and put together in a durable hardcover, easy to carry format.

When my 3-yr old takes an interest in something, it usually becomes an all-out obsession: dinosaurs, construction vehicles, space and so it continues with Thomas the Tank Engine. We've read other books and rented videos, but these books (there are four in this series) are his beloved. The stories are simple and plentiful with a bit of a moral to them, without being pretentious or zealous. The writing style is delightful: adult enough not to bore the reader and yet perfectly understandable for the listener (assuming it's a child!). The pictures are clear but not movie or television tie-ins - it makes them more lovable! The books are small and my son loves to stack them and carry them around with him.

If your child loves Thomas and you're tired of media tie-ins, these books are for you!

After being given Welsh Coal, Henry takes the Flying Kipper one evening and has a terrible accident. He then gets a new shape and a larger firebox and is in no need of special coal anymore. Later he teaches Gordon and silly boys a lesson with a Whistle and a Sneeze!

The stories of Henry, the green engine, come to us as a very beautiful book. Known as the Flying Kipper, Henry and his trucks have fun making their rounds. After an accident, Henry gets a new shape. When some troublesome boys decide to throw rocks at engines passing under a bridge, Henry teaches them a lesson. Written by Wilbert Awdry. Illustrated by Clarence Reginald Dalby.
