As a hard-core sci-fi reader I refuse to read Sword and Sourcery novels. But this little book has opened my eyes. Full of likable, fun characters that you can identify with, this book leads you on quests and through mysteries. You will meet witches, dragons, kings and princes and, of course, cats!

Unfortunately all 8 of Mr. Gray's books are out of print. I have ordered the other (7) through Amazon, but in the meantime, I would happily swap this book for any other of Mr. Gray's. The swap can be permanent or temporary, as you like. Thank you. -John

Windows for the Crown Prince - Akihito of Japan by Elizabeth Gray Vining 1952, 1989.

How much influence can one person have? The author is asked to serve as the private tutor of English for the Crown Prince by the Emperor of Japan in the post WWII era. He lives a life very isolated from the rest of the real world. Her Quaker background and her desire to help him see the "outside" world beyond palace walls helped shape the man who is the figurehead leader of Japan today. Her inside look at the life of the young future leader gives an interesting and informative look at Japan and its people at this time period. A delightful book for people who enjoy history, culture studies, memoirs and Japanese society. Easy to read and enjoy.

Just had the opportunity to read this book. It is all pictures featuring the lives of the men who served with the Air Force and flying some of the amazing aircraft of World War II. This book shows maps of the battle theater and all the little individual battlegrounds, i.e., small islands and large islands in the Pacific which was a vast area to cover for both the Japanese and Americans. Very very good indeed.

An excellent history of what life was like in the 1930's

T found this book readable and informable. I read it to find out what life was like on the prairies during the depression. The book painted an accurate and vivid account. I loved the discriptions of the grasshopper plagues. I appreciated the account of life in the relief camps. It is very difficult to get such information. I would like to read more books by this author.

Follow the mullet!

This is the adventure of three mullet - friends but with different personalities - as they brave through the elements and the frying pan in their journey through the Florida Bayous. Danger is everywhere and beautifully drawn: sharks, turtles, pelicans and fishermen stalk the book's oversized, colorful pages. Loosely based on a fable by Rumi, the wise mullet's tale has become a Panhandle classic. I cannot think of a better way to help children make sense of the Katrina devastation than its sequel "Ol' Middler Saves the Day: A Mullet Buddy Homecoming."

Inspiring and fascinating

This is a great book, well researched and beautifully written. Reading about these women didn't feel like reading a history book. Their stories rise to another level. I couldn't put the book down. A few of the women profiled are well known, but most of them have been ignored by the history books. However, they are all inspiring for what they accomplished in an era when women were second class citizens. They were writers, cattle ranchers, politicians, slaves, entrepreneurs. They were brave, tough, and resourceful. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the old west, in women's history, or American studies.

Factual material which can often be dry and boring in non-fiction books becomes realistically lively in The World Of The Wolf by Candace Savage. For example, wolves, no mater what age or gender, all look out for their young. But the thing of it is that they all play with the pupstogether, no matter how old each wolf is, almost like the family mob in the Sopranoes.
