A very excellent text about the Ice Age and its animals
Helpful Votes: 35 out of 35 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-04
This book joins "Ice Age Mammals of North America" as one of the exceptionally fine recent texts about the vanished large animals living on the North American continent during the Ice Age. Many of these marvelous creatures vanished less than 10,000 years ago, a heartbeat in geological time. You will be particularly struck by the superb, in-full-color computer graphics and photography in the book. The two arts are combined to give astonishing looks at what these animals looked like in their native habitats. If the book contained little more, it would be worth it on this basis alone. But there is much more to recommend the book

After a good introduction, this book examines life during the recent glaciation, and into today, by region. Six regions are encompassed. The first is never-glaciated Beringia, consisting of Alaska and the Bering Sea land bridge. Then, in turn, come the northwestern United States coast, the Great Plains, the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin, Florida, and the Eastern forest. The differences, and similairties, between the Ice Age climates and fauna are carefully explored for each area. Certain key animals in each region are analyzed by in-chapter profiles.

These descriptions are completely up-to-date, and are accompanied by the excellent graphics previously discussed. Animals reviewed in this manner include two varieties of mammoth, the mastodon, the saber-toothed and scimitar cats, the giant. armadillo-like glyptodont, the giant short-faced bear, which was bigger than a Kodiak bear, and several varieties of ground sloth. You will also learn that quite a few animals survived the extinctions, including the moose, musk ox, grizzly bear, bison, elk, as well as many animals that lived on in Eurasia, but not here, such as the horse, the saiga antelope, cheetah, lion, camel, zebra, and the wisent, or European bison.

In the closing chepter, the authors examine the possible reasons for the sudden extinctions of so many large, dominant animals within the span of a few thousand years. These include overkill by man, climatic change, and several other reason. The discussion is timely, thorough and apt.

This book will provide many days of enjoyable, provocative reading. Given ongoing changes in weather, loss of wildlife habitat, and the like, are we continuing, and even accelerating these extinctions? This book offers excellent food for thought on such matters, but I will leave the ultimate decision to the reader, upon reflection.

Very, very highly recommended to anyone with a high school or greater background, including graduate students and academics. Enjoy, and ponder.

Princess Backwards is the story of Princess Fred who cannot quite adjust to life in her kingdom where everything is the reverse of what we are used to. She struggles to do things the way everyone else in the kingdom does, but despairs at her clumsiness. But when the castle is threatened, Princess Fred realizes that her way isn't wrong -- it just different and may even save the day! A lively picture book story creatively written by Jane Gray and energetically illustrated by Liz Milkau, Princess Backwards is a wonderfully entertaining and original addition to any personal, school, or community library picture book collection.

I saw an ad in Western Outdoor News for a fishing seminar on "candy bait" at a church in Seal Beach. I had just bought a 25' skippy for bug diving, but bug season was now over, and a long summer lay ahead. I went to the seminar and there was a speaker talking in a frank business like manner about how to attract and catch squid to prepare to catch WSB off Catalina. I ended up buying the book and a squid light. I read the book, lost the light somewhere in the boat, and preceeded to use the techniques and some of the numbers out of the book - Thx Mark! Our first foray was to the east end, where three of us, all never having caught a WSB, bought some squid at 4:30 AM, popped around the east end, hit the waypoint button for a spot out of the book, metered big meatballs of WSB near our spot in the gray, dropped our lines, and within 3 minutes hooked up three 30 pound WSB. While the fleet lay off the Vees miles away not catching squat, we killed them on our own spot picked and confirmed with Marks teachings and techniques...Bottom line is, the book really works and is a joy to read. Sure, it has some spelling and grammatical errors, but its really packed with knowledge you would have to spend years gathering on your own! If you want to catch Yellowtail and WSB in SoCal, this is a must read for you. Now if only Mel and Ray would write a bug book with numbers I'd really be happy.

Lizzie Borden: New Ideas, Information, and Insights

Review Date: 2004-01-17
If you're fascinated by Lizzie Borden, this book -- a collection of 26 papers presented at the conference held on the 100th anniversary of the infamous murders -- will keep you glued to the page. Here you will find Lizzie, the person and Lizzie, the case considered from five perspectives: psychological/women's issues; historical; literary; legal and forensic; and bibliographical. Sample titles: "The World Owed Her: Lizzie Borden's Shoplifting," "Lizzie, You Mean and Spiteful Thing," and "Librarians in the Life and Legend of Lizzie Borden."

But what really sets the book apart is its compelling suggestion that Lizzie may have been a victim of childhood incest (three papers focus exclusively on this idea). "The evidence, often the product of modern sociological, psychological, and clinical research, is persuasive and certainly provides us with a new way of looking at the crime," writes editor Jules Ryckebusch.

Indeed, the book's biggest virtue is its total departure from the usual did-she-or-didn't-she. I really couldn't put it down, although several spelling and grammatical errors detracted from my reading pleasure.

This book changed my life!!!

As a former leader of the notorious biker gang, Satan's Little Elves, I used to live a life sewn together with the black thread of evil. Whether it was selling crack cocaine to retarded kids or taking more toothpicks than I needed from the men's restroom at Denny's, I was headed on the road to Nowhere - quick!!!

Then one day, knowing my secret pension for herbal tea, Snake Vomit, a buddy of mine, gave me this book to read. I cut my hippy hairdo and enrolled in Christian Military school. I have since become a roadie, following Twila Paris across the Good Ol' US of A and terrorizing members of the Green Party.

Rock on brothers!!!
