This little story of Little Gray Rabbit is a lovely tale of love. Little Gray Rabbit attempts to teach the ways of survival to his new brothers and sisters. As a duckling, owlet, and chick look on, Little Gray Rabbit runs into embarrassment and troubles with each lesson. However, in the end, his brothers and sisters learn about bravery and social responsibility, two lessons that Little Gray Rabbit hadn't intended. This is a great story for kids and adults. Lorinda Bryan Cauley's illustrations are wonderfully fun.

Forgotten role of London
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-10
London was the major port involved in the early development of the English Transatlantic slave trade, but it is often discounted in favor of Bristol and Liverpool, which overshadowed London in terms of participation as the 18th century wore on. As Rawley points out, the London trade did not actually end in the 1720s, as many have suggested, but persisted until the British abolished their participation in the trade in 1807.

What makes this book important to those who want to know more about how the trade got started and accepted is that it is is the late 17th and early 18th centuries, that you can see the entrepreneurial and ethical development of the trade most clearly. At this point the trade was not the well-oiled machine that it later became and people were able to make choices. Those who chose to participate set the tone and developed the methodology of what was to come.

This excellent book traces the lives of some of London's foremost traders of the period, putting a human face on people we now find hard to understand. It is an extraordinary effort of research that is surprisingly readable, considering the wealth of information and the nature of the subject. James Rawley has spent a life time specializing in this area, and this is an important collection of recent essays.

"Must" reading for all Civil War buffs and historians.

Texas played an important role in the American Civil War, providing more than 70,000 Texans to the Confederate armies. Thirty-seven of those Texans served as general officers and included such notable battlefield commanders as Albert Sidney Johnston, John Bell Hood, Ben McCulloch, Samuel Bell Maxey, and Tom Green. In Lone Star Generals In Gray, history and author Ralph Wooster provides substantial insight into the careers of these Confederate general officers from Texas and sets them within the broader context of Texan involvement in the War Between The States. These were men who led (and in some cases, misled) their troops in a uniquely Texan way. Lone Star Generals In Gray is informative, vivid, fascinating, illuminating and insightful reading for students of the Civil War and the history of Texas.

Wooster keeps his title as "top living Texas historian"

Anyone with experience in Civil War history, or with an interest in Texas history generally, is familiar with the work of Prof. Wooster of Lamar University. His academic and scholarly accomplishments and recognitions over the past half-century are many and deserved, and his list of publishing credits is lengthy. This volume follows logically from his TEXAS AND TEXANS IN THE CIVIL WAR (1995) and LONE STAR GENERALS IN GRAY (2000), helping to complete his portrait of Texas forces in the War between the States. Texas contributed seventy-eight infantry and cavalry regiments and thirty-five artillery batteries which saw service from the Virginia Tidewater to the California border (not even counting the fourteen regiments and independent battalions raised for state service, and which are not considered here). Many Texan soldiers served in the same unit throughout the War. Since the regiment, the basic military building block, was usually recruited in a single region of the state and was commanded by a local (elected) individual, the genealogical value of understanding the system is obvious. Nor is this simply a handbook setting out the key details of each unit (though those are included), but a narrative history and explanation of the Texas military establishment, the broad campaigns and specific battles in which its units fought, and the successes and failures of the men who commanded it. There also are nearly nine hundred footnotes (many of them considerably more than source citations) and a lengthy bibliographical essay, making this almost required reading for any student of the Civil War and any family researcher with mid-19th century Texas ancestry.

What a delight for lovers of Regency Romance.

An irresistibly beautiful heiress sets out to tame the most arrogant lord in all of Regency England. When Faustina encountered Hugh Crale for the first time in years, the proud heiress to Kennett Chase set out to teach the haughty Earl of Pendarvis some badly needed lessons. Hugh Crale had to learn that he could not treat his small daughter like an unwanted stray...that he could not trust the designing French governess he had employed...that he could not expect to go to London to choose a new wife as he might buy a horse at market...and, above all, that Faustina was no longer a silly young thing to be dazzled and dallied with, but a woman in control of her mind, heart, and destiny. But now Faustina had discovered something she did not have time to impart to the Earl. Hugh Crale had been led into a labyrinth of intricate evil and murderous intrigue-and the only way to save his life was to risk her own. And what could the headstrong Faustina be expected to do when the most outrageously, arrogant, stubborn, domineering, elegant, and handsome nobleman in all the realm was in desperate need of rescuing....?

I very much recommend this book to those who love the regency period. A wonderful read and a fine example of regency writing! Vanessa Gray is a very talented writer

We stayed in Amsterdam for just two days en route back home to Canada, but without this guide, we'd have been lost. It's thin and light, but there's a small wealth of information crammed into it. Of course, if you're staying Amsterdam longer, invest in a more in-depth guide. But we're returning later this year, and it's definitely coming along for the ride - the fold-away maps are worth the price alone.

Lonely Planet is best travel series ever!

I am an extensive user of travel guides, particularly ones for travelers on a budget. The Lonely Planet books have the same budget travel info on hotels, airline travel, how to get around by bus, train, etc. that my other favorite series, "Let's Go" has. However, you don't get to learn as much history and culture in the Let's Go books like you do in Lonely Planet. Let's Go is more of a reference book. Lonely Planet teaches you local culture and has much more comprehensive coverage of the region, especially this one-the Carolinas and Georgia. Let's Go doesn't give North and South Carolina nearly as much justice as this Lonely Planet book. Let's Go never mentions the Triad or Wilmington, NC. Lonely Planet has a good section on those. This book makes the least-heralded travel destinations look interesting. This series is also updated an average of every two years, and they welcome input from readers and they use it for the next edition.

This book has an entire section on Atlanta, including a set of very good maps and a MARTA map. You will do well in Atlanta with this book. Charleston and Myrtle Beach, and somewhat of Columbia, SC are well documented, and the up-country of Greenville/Spartanburg are represented. In North Carolina, you'll learn about the Triangle, Charlotte, the Western NC mountain region, and all the beach areas from top to bottom. Georgia has the entire state covered, even the mountain areas of the northeastern part of the state, where there are some excellent state parks, and of course, the southern end of the Appalachian Trail. You will also get to explore Savannah, Augusta, Hilton Head, and much more. There is a good deal of info in the book, and it isn't overbearing to find your way around in it.

Very good information for international travelers from abroad as well. For those of you who visit our area and have never been to the South before, you'll get a handy primer on its eccentricities and its triumphs, as well as how to get along with the most genteel and aristocratic of Southern ladies and gentlemen.
