Victorian Clothes and Crafts

"Victorian rooms were cluttered with objects, some handcrafted and others manufactured. There were ornaments and potted plants, such as aspidistras, and stuffed animals and birds in glass cases."

The Victorian Age was named for Queen Victoria who ruled Britain and Ireland from 1837 to 1901. During this time period, industry changed much of the traditional life in Britain. Machines replaced the human hand in crafts and people soon realized that mass production did not give the quality of the earlier handmade goods.

In this book you can learn about:

Victorian Crafts
Clothes and Fashion
Festivals and Holidays

Shows pictures of old sewing machines, details of tapestry, dollhouses, decorated books, Paris fashions and paintings.

You can also learn to make Victorian valentine's cards, Victorian silhouettes, decoupage and puppets.

There is also a glossary and a list of further reading.

Also look for Clothes and Crafts in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Aztec Times, Middle Ages and Roman Times.

I got this for our granddaughter, who had it checked out of her school library for months. Amazon hooked me up with a used bookseller who had a fine condition library edition and the granddaughter was ecstatic.

I've been working with Will Stoecker's "Handbook" and Roy Dossat's "Principles", but there were many questions I had (about calculations) that neither addressed. This book has filled in many of the blanks. It is extremely helpful. It is more practical (less theoretical) than Dossat and provides more help with calculations than Stoecker. I dedicate this review to every IR Engineer who has despairingly researched a problem and found nothing but Air Conditioning.

Good account of international law on the use of force
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-08
Christine Gray, a Reader in International Law at Cambridge University, has written an excellent account of current international law on the use of force by states. She examines the laws banning the use of force, civil wars, self-defence, collective self-defence, the use of force against terrorism, the UN and the use of force, Security Council authorisation for the use of force, and regional peacekeeping and enforcement actions.

International law depends on the defence of nations' rights to self-determination, sovereignty and independence. She shows that the UN remains committed to the prohibition of any forcible intervention in the internal affairs of any nations.

Gray maintains that the reasoning of the International Court of Justice in Nicaragua's case against the USA in 1986 is of paramount importance in this area because it is the Court's first extended discussion of the law on the use of force. The Court found that Nicaragua had not attacked anybody, but that the US government had illegally used force and intervened in Nicaragua. The Court rejected the US claim that its Contra war was justified as `humanitarian' intervention. The US state has refused to accept the verdict.

Gray shows that the similar recent US/British attacks on Iraq and Yugoslavia were also illegal: "The use of the doctrine of implied authorization by the Security Council to justify the military action by the USA and the UK in Iraq in 1993 and 1998, by NATO in Kosovo and most recently by the USA, the UK and Australia in Operation Iraqi Freedom shows lip-service to the authority of the UN, but an unwillingness actually to accept the decisions of the Security Council."

As UN Secretary-General Kofi Anna said in 1999, "enforcement actions without Security Council authorisation threaten the very core of the international security system." On 16 September 2004, he stated that the war on Iraq was illegal. Recent UN Resolutions have not endorsed the war as legal. The illegal invasion has now become an illegal belligerent occupation.

With so much information to be taken on board by clinical students, not only factually but also clinically, it is reassuring to find a book which covers all essentials so well. This highly readable book is written in a very easy-to-understand way and with all the colourful diagrams actually makes reading it fun. This book covers all the core topics that will carry a clinical student through to the exams and beyond.

A great novel, a diffent style
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.

This book by Julia Gray has some great elements of fantasy writing and is well written. The characters are appealing and likeable and the plot is original around a common one.

I seemed to like it better than Eddings style. It is similar to Eddings, The Redemption of Athalas but with greater language and a better world. Julia Gray has created an intriguing world and character base. I can't wait for the next book!

A troubling, yet necessary perspective
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-01
Jean Goulbourne's Excavation gives a refreshing perspective on a subject that has long troubled the West Indies-the nature of identity in a multiracial society haunted by a history of colonialism. Her story, set in Jamaica, centers on a group of archaeology students: Carla, the protagonist; David, a white American from Chicago; Kwame, an African from Ghana; Akete, a Jamaican Rastafarian; and Professor Milton, an aging teacher who is attracted to Carla. The relationships between these principal characters serve an allegorical function, for gradually Carla becomes a symbol for the island and its troubled past.

A delightfully humerous and quirky tale of love conquering greed. The unique appeal of this timeless tale of star-crossed lovers is the imaginative and fun illustrations combined with witty and charming text . A joy to read for children as well as adults. Another to watch out for from Gray and Dickson is 'How Many Green Ice-Creams?'.
