A Woefully Neglected Writer, Editor, and Activist

"Fool's Paradise" is an excellent introduction to the work of an amazing writer and astonishingly versatile public intellectual, now largely forgotten. Before editing "The Nation" for two decades, McWilliams wrote a dozen first-rate books and hundreds of penetrating articles on the exploitation of farm labor, racial and ethnic prejudice, the Japanese-American internment, California politics and culture, and the Red scare. He also served in state government and played a role in several high-profile court cases. His 1946 book, "Southern California: An Island on the Land," inspired the Oscar-winning screenplay for "Chinatown," and he is still widely regarded as the finest nonfiction writer on California--ever. Later, he published many talented young journalists in the pages of "The Nation," including Ralph Nader, Hunter S. Thompson, and Howard Zinn. Along with samples of McWilliams's own lucid writing, "Fool's Paradise" includes superb essays by his son, political theorist Wilson Carey McWilliams, and by Gray Brechin, author of "Imperial San Francisco."

An Excellent Romance that I couldn't put Down!

Most of the year Mercy Spencer works as a dental assistant in Marietta, Oklahoma, but some missionary type friends of hers talked her into going down to a godforsaken town in Mexico and do what she does for a living down there on her vacation. She also has to lead gospel sing-a-longs in the evening at the local church.
She hates it, wishes she never would have given up her vacation. Then one night as she's leading the children, a booming base comes from the other side of the wall. She storms over to the bar next to the church to tell them to turn down the music and she clashes with Hunter Wilson, who runs the cantina.
So the question we have to answer here are: Will Mercy stay in Mexico? Will she tame Hunter? Can he be tamed? Will he change her mind about Mexico? Of course you have to read this delicious romance to find out, but believe me you'll love all the time you put into this book. I know I did.

Leadership in anything is the difference between mediocrity and greatness, and "From Good Schools to Great Schools: What Principals Do Well" elaborates on that point. Promoting that schools need a good leader to do well, it encourages principals across the nation to ask "What can I do to make a difference and life my school to excellence?", an optimistic question the book hopes to help them answer with in-depth discussions, reflection questions, and comparisons between a good businessman and a good principal. "From Good Schools to Great Schools: What Principals Do Well" is a must read for anyone in a position of leadership in any educational facility and should find a place on any community library education shelf.

This book is very good It starts with a brief biography of Otto Werner. This is very emotive for persons like me that have been doing research in this syndrome the last years.
Each chapter has been written by an authority in the field, and the most important thing is that there are many chapters about the clinical aspects of this disease From this point of view this book is unique as the last book published is more molecular oriented.
The price is high but the quality of the paper is super good

I thought it was great. 1st person Prentiss N. Gray wrote daily of his trips in Canada , Alaska and the lower 48. My favorite was his British Columbia hunts/explorations between the Peace and Fraser rivers as the title of the book sugests. He took his Wife and 2 kids on hunts as well and documents thier success and failures. Well written and how it was in the 1920-1930's PHOTOGRAPHS WERE FANTASTIC and lots of them almost 1 full page original photo of Prentiss' for every 2 pages. The Scores of photos are worth many thousands of words and the book would be worth it for the photos by themselves. The wilds of B.C., Alberta, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, etc makes you want to go there

About Lejendary Adventures Essentials

The Lejendary Adventure game falls in a middle ground between class based games like D&D and skill based games like GURPS. Starting characters have five "abilities" that are very, very broad skills. It calls them "skill-bundles". e.g. Enchantment, Stealth, Theurgy, & Weapons.
There are also Orders that group a certain selection of four abilities into specific careers. Members of the Noble Order, e.g., should have--at least--the abilities Chivalry, Weapons, Hunt, & Physique. While joining an Order has benefits, a character may also remain "Unordered", if his abilities don't match any of the Orders.
The abilities that are available & the ways in which they relate to each other do an amazingly good job of keeping characters well rounded despite the best attempts at power gaming while still offering more flexibility than a class based system.
Unlike D&D (but like many other games), characters typically start out as full-fledged members of their choosen career rather than youngsters straight out of their apprenticeships. Progression is slower than D&D, but fast enough to keep those players who need it happy.
Unfortunately, Gygax has choosen to eschew standard roleplaying game jargon. PCs are called Avatars. NPCs are called NACs (non-Avatar characters). Spells are called Activations or Powers. Spellcasters are called Activators. Spell points are called Activation Energy Points.
Essentials comes with everything you need to play. It has fewer races, abilities, extraordinary abilities (kinds of magic), activations (spells), orders, & monsters than the "full version" of the rules. Yet, there is plenty here: 6 races, 35 abilities (including 2 extraordinary abilities), 9 orders, & 156 activations.
It seems that the rules themselves have been abbreviated as well, but again, there's plenty here to play the game without ever buying anything else.
It is not a complex game with lots of rules. It is closer in these respects to the old classic (Basic & Expert Set) D&D than to, for instance, GURPS or the latest edition of D&D. In some ways it resembles a more serious version of Risus, but less free form & more "rules medium" than "rules light".

Spiritual growth

This book was written in 1925 and I received it as a gift in 1973 after going through some trials in my life. This books shows why spiritual growth is sometimes gained through the darkest times in our lives. Sometimes we must just accept the pain of living along with the joys in our lives and know they both come from God and make us stronger. Life is a journey, a struggle at times but worth every minute and I am thankful for the people that help us through it.
